    Tom, after watching many of your videos and learning a lot, I decide to buy the express impress. My wife is also a daily user and she got the hang of it rather quickly. I'm drinking around 3 shots daily and learning a lot along the way. Espresso is like wine, you need to understand there will be sensorial differences from cup to cup and go with it. When you find a great one, take note of the settings and buy the beans again....but never stop testing new ones. :)

    Thanks for the video.
    I bought the Express Impress Friday last week, tried to dial it in without any luck. I learned it the hard way, that older beans were bad 😅
    No matter what I did, it tasted horrible. Saturday I bought a back of beans at the supermarket, looking at the packing dates and choosing on that was packet a couple of months ago. But found out after my first shot, that it was light roasted beans. They were acidic as h*** but got them dialed in a little better, so the taste was less acidic with a little bitterness, but not drinkable😝
    I ordered some fresh roasted beans that should be here tomorrow. Hopefully I can manage to dial in those beans.
    Can you please make a video about inner burr and outer grind settings? I don't quiet understand why you have to change the inner burr setting and to what. Maybe because different UA-cam videos tell different things about it. You set yours to 3, while others say don't set it lower than 5 or it will get worn out quicker, and others again say leave it at factory settings.
    Thanks for good explanatory videos 😊👍

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  Рік тому +3

      Hi there and thanks for your comment! Honestly, the burr thing is a personal preference. I like to set it at 3 so that I am kind of in the middle of the range for espresso, being able to use the whole dial on the side for dialing in. If you leave the inner burr at five, then you will have much less range on the outer dial, at least that's my observation. The burrs won't wear out any quicker, as long as they are not abutting each other of course. At least I don't see how they could. Cheers!

      @@TomsCoffeeCorner Thanks for the answer 🙂
      Just to know if I understand it correctly....If you leave the burr at factory setting (6), you'll have a narrower scale for espresso on the outer dial, and by lowering the burr setting to e.g 3 you are widening the range on the outer dial....for espresso?

    Tom, I love the fact that you are doing a dialing in video. I am fine with dialing in at this point, but it is great for others. I think so many creators gloss over this sort of video.
    As for the dialing in process, I find that I like to up dose rather than tighten the grind as my beans age. This is only really an issue with 1 kilo bags of beans that are more commercially available such as Lavazza. The beans tend to take up less space in the portafilter as they age, for whatever reason and adding half a gram seems to solve all of my problems. I really only have to do this once for a 1kg bag. With fresher coffee from local roasters, I might have to adjust my grind by a click here and there as it ages/rests but usually not because I can kill off the bag faster than it changes, lol.
    Also, you have showcased those beans so much that I will have to take a trip to get some once I am back in the EU, lol.
    Oh, and I think the Impress is a good option for my wife and I in the future. Though I wish they had a pro model rather than a touch model. I have a Bambino Plus, but she says it is too much fuss to make coffee. I was thinking that the impress might take out just enough of the fuss to be usable for her. Idk if it will take away the fun for me though, lol. Can always pair it up with a Flair 58 for when I want to play around with a single origin etc.
    Anyway, as always, I appreciate the time and effort you take to make these videos. Already looking forward to the next one, thank you.

      Thanks much for your thoughtful comment! Yes, Dinzler is the most consistent and reliable roaster I know. They are just great. Kind of expensive, but I need good beans for these videos. I quite like the Impress' internal tamper, it's a nice feature. My wife likes it too. If this had the updated steam wand on it, I think it would be the best in the lineup. Thanks for the tip on updosing a little. I could try that. Cheers!

    I want to buy a bottomless portafilter (Normcore) and an IMS Precision basket but I have a question: since the tamping is done by volume and the "smart" tamper stops at a specific height with the standard Sage PF/basket, what size of IMS basket should I buy to keep an 18 grams dose?
    I saw that IMS has 4 heights and since I'm using a medium roast coffee I think I should use either a 26 or a 28mm... but I'm not sure which one! Which size do you recommend?

I'm used to the lazy way of just pushing the button and letting my machine decide when it is done. So after your determining the best grind setting etc, would you let your machine time itself?

    Hi! I have rewatched your video(s) so many times over the last couple of days but no matter what I try, every shot is sour on my express impress and I have wasted so many pricy beans at this point. I just got fresh beans that were literally roasted 4 days ago. I tried it at the default temp, then raised my temperature to the highest one. Then middle. Then default. I left my burr on 6 as it came that way and changed it to 5, 4, 3. All the while also one-by-one adjusting the outer grind settings everywhere from like 4-17 (and even went down to 1 today just for the hell of it), and still sour. But the other problem is when I do go super fine, it comes out super slowly which tells me it's too fine, but then it is STILL SOUR? I can tell from the smell it is not right and that it is sour before even tasting it.
    I got a scale; I measure, I time. I do not have the issue of the liquid flowing too quickly, but if anything, sometimes it won't begin until about 13+ seconds (I start the timer when I click the double shot button), and the output is like, barely a few grams. So then I turn the dial to make it more coarse. Then back and forth.
    This has become a very pricy experiment - waiting for my IMS precision double basket and bottomless portafilter to arrive any day now too. I am so exasperated. I forget what coffee should taste like because everything is sour (even though my house smells amazing from the pounds of failed beans). I get frustrated, quit, and run back to my nespresso (or tea because I am just pissed off, lol).
    Is there anything else I am missing?

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  Рік тому +1

      Are you using light, med or dark roasted beans? A bottomless PF will help tremendously, as you can then see your puck prep, and if it's taking too long. Shots that take forever are not good either. Lighter roasts are notoriously harder to extract. What's your ratio like? If you have a sour shot, you can pull it longer into like a 3:1 ratio or so, to add some bitter flavors at the end of the shot to balance the sour. Maybe upload a video of your routine. Cheers!

      Yes, irrespective of model, it is best practice to always change setting while the burrs are moving. It is mechanically the only way on some grinders, and even if you can move the setting, the result could be very imprecise in case an uncrushed bean is stuck in there for example.

      also. It simply boggles my mind how in the world can anyone set this to a 3 inner and a 13 .. and get the coffee running so smoothly and fast. Hi Tom, yesterday I discovered something strange: I tried to make a coffee with the single cup basket and the machine produced a large quantity of coffee, practically like a double. So I wanted to check how much water it produced, I made a dispensing (without coffee and without filter holder) of a single and then a double: both times the machine dispensed exactly 100 ml of water. To be safe, I restored the factory values and redid the extractions: always 100 ml of water, both with the single shot and with the double shot. Repeated the reset and the two extractions again, the result did not change. I expected that the extraction of a single coffee would produce about half as much water as double and not the same. I tried contacting Sage support but they couldn't tell me if this is normal or not. It's not a real problem because, fortunately, by customizing the extraction quantity this is maintained, but it's strange, what do you think of this?

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  Рік тому

      Hi Giorgio, the water is measured with an encoder based water wheel. The thing is, these count different under no load, versus load. This is why when pulling extractions, the results in the cup vary, sometimes quite a lot, based on dose and grind fineness. When however there is no load (no PF inserted), it can count accurately, and will likely stop at a max of 100ml. I do agree with you though, that logically it would make sense that the single stop at 50ml. Cheers!

      Thanks for the reply Tom. I
      am convinced that under equal conditions (dispensing of water only) the programming of the single shot should be half that of the double shot. I also saw some videos on UA-cam (of the basic Barista Express) that show that the single extraction is half the price. But I don't feel like sending the car for repairs (from Italy to Germany) just for this reason.😢😢

    Can you test a bit more about using an after market basket with the impress and how it effects the auto dosing ? Read somewhere its auto dosing is made perticularlly for its own basket, which has a tappered shape and using a basket like IMS with more flat sides result in auto dosing not giving the right amount ?
    A test with IMS basket and seeing what amount the auto dosing gives in back to back run vs its own basket for consistancy would be grand
    Also, from what i have read, the auto dosing aims for 18 grams, is there an option to lower that to 16 ? or would auto dosing always be around 18 grams ?

Start looking for more reviews I realised coffee taste much better when using portafilter instead of fully automatic express. I am wondering - I drink 3-4 coffee's a day (lattes, cappuccinos, sometimes long black). I am amateur, never used portafilter coffee machines, but I like good quality coffee. Hello Tom. I hope you are well and thank you for all your informative videos.
    I just purchased this machine. Every time I use the auto dose and the dosage shows green I weigh the amount of coffee and it shows 20 or 21g. It is not like your first attempt in this videos where your 22g was showing up as 'overdosed' on the dosage lighting system. I have tried another grind size, then reset the dosage by pressing the filter button for 3secs but it always seems to be around 20-21g whenever the dosage light is green - it is almost as if the machine thinks this is the correct weight. Would you have any recommendations?

    • @TomsCoffeeCorner
      @TomsCoffeeCorner  Рік тому

      Well, you can also use the manual mode, which is timer based. Just empirically find out where you need to set the knob to get your ideal dose of i.e. 16 grams.
      The volume in the basket is going to differ in weight a bit, based on roast. Lighter roasts are denser than darker roasts for example, since there's still more water contained in the beans that hasn't been roasted off.

    • @adek86
      @adek86 Рік тому

      It checks the volume, not the weight. Depending on the grinding setting and type of beans, puck density will change. Use smaller basket if you want smaller dose. Alternatively you could grind manual dose and add puck screen on top of the puck to prevent water channeling

    • @plektosgaming
      @plektosgaming 5 місяців тому

      @@adek86 But, yes, it seems to "like" 20 grams. The way around this is to get a single dose grinding adapter, measure out the beans, and grind them. Use the tamper and ignore the lights. You want 18.2 grams? Grind 18.2. The advantage of this, IME, is that it goes you a consistent tamping, removing one factor from the equation.
