I love this idea! I've been thinking about breeding some pest snails so I can get a good colony going for a puffer in the future (months in the future haha) and I get my cat litter in plastic buckets. I've been thinking about using one of those as a snail breeding bucket.
I have some ramshorn snails in my 36L shrimp tank (that currently has a glass shrimp in it). My 2 big ones have white patches on their shells, is that normal? Also, how do I get powdered eggshells and would adding powdered eggshells hurt my shrimp?
The red ramshorns r our best friends in a fish or shirmp tanks. I refused 6 months ago to introduce them in my very planted aquarium... til i was fed up seeing algeas growing and invading plants and the glass . These ramshorns eat all my green and blue algae !!!!! My Amano shrimps and me say them thanks ! by the way : i bought 14 pink ramshorns 4 months ago...i should have near 80-100 now :D...
Great video again Mark! I really like Snails! I keep some poolsnails in my breeding tank, when they're big enough I feed them to my Puffer. *_Keep up the good work and thumbs up!_*
Hey Mark, quick question here. How long can eggshell powder typically last? I'm thinking of preparing some and use them over a period of time for the snails, but I'm not sure what's the best way to keep them (at room temperature or refrigerated), and how long they could last. Any ideas?
Glad to see the tern around you have had with your snails even without looking back to your original video I remember how they had declined in number and quality.
I have a pretty new fish tank atm it's just over 20 gal I have 5 rcs 2 guppies and 1 zebra snail I was wondering if 1 snail was enough or do I need more and if so how many would you suggest?
Hi Mark.. this is really cool. What do you do with the snails? I just lost a couple mystery snails. Any idea why they would die? I only had them a couple weeks. Also where do I get feeder snails and are they the same? Thanks Mark.. have a great weekend!
Do you have your own ro system? I would love to get one but have very bad water pressure, do you know if you can use the ro systems which come with a pump to run through water with 0 pressure? Thanks.
Yes! Finally update video of the snails. Thanks for sharing Mark, do you find the blended egg shells works better/cleaner than dropping the larger pieces in ?
I'm new to keeping ramshorn snails and am trying to get them to breed. I've been getting them free from my pet store because they consider them a pest. But they've been more temperamental for me than i expected. What temperture do you think they do best at? How i can i make them "happier"?
Thx again Mark another great video!I have a 10 gal with blue ramshorns (my wife's nickname is snail so she thinks their for her ) i personal like ramshorn but i do feed some of the snail to my pea puffer (my would freak out if she knew)
Snails are so cool I used to keep a load In a old Milton steriliser unit when I was a kid haha my mum wasn't impressed as I kept them in my wardrobe hahahaha
Is there suppliers you could recommend for the algae waffers,?. Interesting video, thank you. Recently started keeping ramshorn so been watching lots of videos
Good day Mark! How do you know when you have too many snails in the tank? Do you have a shrimp to snail ratio? Sometimes I'll feed my neocaridina shrimp and the snails will hoard over the food and it seems the shrimp are pushed back in the crowd. I know the shrimp should be eating what the snails leave behind, so I suppose they are getting the food eventually. What are your thoughts on this? I Just got some of the food I ordered in from you, it has brought more life and activity from my shrimp, thank you!
Great video mark! Also instead of using eggshells you should try out sea chem equilibrium it’s a great product for shrimp and snails as well as plants.
I so want to try this with saltwater snails. The problem with them is that the larvae is planktonic and usually is destroyed by the filter. But a sponge like that might be safe enough for them?
well like you i have a bad back then about 6 years ago a stroke put me in a wheelchair so i pump everything mate a small 300 dont cost much but it saves A LOT of pain for sure syphon from tank to bucket check for shrimp or snails then pump to drain easy life
I realize this video is 7 years old. I was just wondering: 1. What's at the bottom of the bucket? Are they egg shells? 2. How often do I make water changes in such setup? And do I always make a 100% change? Thanks.
I got a berried shrimp at my LFS, and as the weeks progressed, she has dropped almost all of her eggs. My water parameters are stable and i really can't think of why this happened… could you help me out?
Mark I had order your Subwassertang 50ml and Pure Montmorillonite Powder for Shrimp With Spoon from EBAY but you didn't ship it. So it 4 days away already from the day that I order so if you read this please ship this stuff to my place.
Marks Shrimp Tanks yes they can I've got some in a butterfly sink in my garden with some oxygenating weed and there fine . Only brought two about 2 months ago now there's loads!
@@MarksShrimpTanks That's partially true. Like all aquatic snails they also take oxygen from the water by cutaneous breathing through diffusion. It's still not clear if the air breathing is obligatory or accessory. There are many scientific data which provides evidence how pulmonates have lived submerged into the water for months with their mantle cavity full of water (no air). There are evidence of another kind of pulmonates which have been under water also for months and when they have been taken out by the scientists their mantle cavities were still full of air (meaning that the snails haven't used it for breathing all these months). So the topic is a little bit complicated. And just to add specifically for the Ramshorn snails - they have a secondary gill, apart from the skin and pulmonary breathing. But there is no doubt that air-breathing even if it's not obligatory is a great evolutionary advantage compared to the snails who breathe only by their skin and gills like the marine snails (because they cannot breathe outside water by any means, neither can survive for a long time in water with very low oxygen levels).
I know im 6 YEARS late but... I hope you ... or someone sees this so, Can different colored ramshorns breed? If so, would they make a new color, or pick one of the parents colors? Thanks
Yes they can interbreed they are the same snail just a different color, and yes you can get new colors from them with selective breeding ones you want to make new colors, most of the time new colors just appear and then you breed them out.
Sock feet in an aquarium room. You, sir, are a confident man!

Great timing! I just received 20 Blue Ramshorn today and I have 20 Red Ramshorn on the way. Thanks for the great information.
Very Welcome Roma .

I love watching you play with buckets of water :)
I actually cut apart out of me spilling it all over myself ,I had to take my shorts and t-shirt off it was horrible.
I cant believe you deleted the BEST part !

its inert calcium when dried so it could last forever
Glad to see the tern around you have had with your snails even without looking back to your original video I remember how they had declined in number and quality.
Yeah they were tiny before ,they are doing really well now ,it will be interesting to see how big they actually grow.
I have thousands of these guys all threw my tanks and they seem to top off just a little larger than the one you had out. About 2.5-2.6 Centimeter's
I have a pretty new fish tank atm it's just over 20 gal I have 5 rcs 2 guppies and 1 zebra snail I was wondering if 1 snail was enough or do I need more and if so how many would you suggest?
This is purely your own preference ,some tanks I have none and some tanks a have a couple :)
Hi Mark.. this is really cool. What do you do with the snails? I just lost a couple mystery snails. Any idea why they would die? I only had them a couple weeks. Also where do I get feeder snails and are they the same? Thanks Mark.. have a great weekend!
I will be selling them once I get a super healthy colony going,I also have them in the tanks that are harder water .
Do you have your own ro system?
I would love to get one but have very bad water pressure, do you know if you can use the ro systems which come with a pump to run through water with 0 pressure? Thanks.
Yes I have an RO Unit ,Tap water is good enough for Ramshorn snails and yes if you get a pump it will make a RO unit work for you .
Yes! Finally update video of the snails. Thanks for sharing Mark, do you find the blended egg shells works better/cleaner than dropping the larger pieces in ?
Is it necessary to have a filter for this? I was thinking of breeding these guys but I don't want to buy another filter to do that
No not if you do regular water changes, these guys are pretty heavy feeders and do produce a lot of waste

24c seems to work best ..I must warn you though they do make alot of mess so I abandoned my breeding of them.
Is there any real difference between different colored ramshorns other than the color? I had heard blues tend to eat plants, but not the red.
Not that I know of :)
Hey Mark,I want to start breeding Ramshorns in a 5.5 gallon Tank. What is the maximum limit of Ramshorns I can have?
Thx again Mark another great video!I have a 10 gal with blue ramshorns (my wife's nickname is snail so she thinks their for her )
i personal like ramshorn but i do feed some of the snail to my pea puffer (my would freak out if she knew)
You mean your ex wife because I have just told her snail killer 😬
LOL your the man mark!

Not that I know of, I was buying tetra pleco algae waffers if that helps you any? not sure they make them any more or not.

to be honest I dont know
Good day Mark!

yes to many snails cna look nasty and create a lot of waste, you should start selling them if there are to many.
You're awesome Mark I loved your video and shrimp because it fantastic and don't forget to send Montmorillonite powder and Subwassertang to my place
I wont and Thank you for the order Bhalm :)
Great video mark! Also instead of using eggshells you should try out sea chem equilibrium it’s a great product for shrimp and snails as well as plants.
Are those eggs shells?
Did you grind your own egg shells or buy a powder mark?
I use my own ,we recycle everything :)
Is there a benefit from having them in the tank? I cannot stand any snails in my aquariums.
I like them and they scavenge food ect that the shrimps dont eat.
I so want to try this with saltwater snails. The problem with them is that the larvae is planktonic and usually is destroyed by the filter. But a sponge like that might be safe enough for them?
Yes a fine sponge will make it safe.
great thanks, I will venture into that experiment then :D
Good luck sir :)
Hi mark i have spixi snails i use cuttlefish bone for there shell and a small ehime 300l pump to do water changes `mate
I will get some cutlebone I think ,I can really use a pump in the bucket because some of the snails are tiny .
well like you i have a bad back then about 6 years ago a stroke put me in a wheelchair so i pump everything mate a small 300 dont cost much but it saves A LOT of pain for sure syphon from tank to bucket check for shrimp or snails then pump to drain easy life

yes they were egg shells and I was doing a water change in this tank every week. they breed way to fast .
I got a berried shrimp at my LFS, and as the weeks progressed, she has dropped almost all of her eggs. My water parameters are stable and i really can't think of why this happened… could you help me out?
Its normal for that to happen if you get a berried shrimp,I dont ever move shrimp when they are berried.
Thank you, i want a small 15 gallon tank to start a solid population of shrimp, do you have any tank suggestions?
Really appreciate your help.
Neocaridina ,something that you can sell on after like a bloody Mary :)

yes probably ,they breath air :)

If you wait another few weeks I can send you some, its still winter here and we are having abit of a winter storm.
Crushed coral...about an inch of it on the bottom
Good tip thank you.
I got 3 ramshorns from a lady giving them away. 1 month later i have 30 ramshorns and counting =(
Do you not like them ?
Oh, they're awesome at cleaning my tank. But its only a 3 gallon tank. i need an upgrade and fast lol
