    My Ramshorn tank is absolutely covered with gooey eggs and hundreds of babies, try using 1 tsp organic baking soda with 2+ tbsp. Epsom salts to get your GH up to 18! replace a fresh piece of cucumber everyday to keep them full and water crystal clean. I find snow/king crab shells way better than egg shell or cuttle bone. give it a try Mark you will be happy

    Rams horns are awesome and so hardy. I have mine in with Java moss and some pothos with the roots in the water. The pothos roots had some root rot, they chewed that all off and the roots are growing again. Love them. I call them water bunnies, lol.

    I have no idea what I'm doing so came to check out some videos, I have a huge bucket in my garden full of old pond water, and found theres hundreds of healthy ramshorns in there! I took some and put them in a tank with the same water to check them out and now they've all laid eggs round the sides!

    Thanks for the info. I liked the video. I have a tank with about 10 Ramshorn snails in it. I am trying to breed them for my Cuban false chameleon's. Question, did you put in regular chicken egg shells and do they eat them? I ended up getting a little heater for mine, at least until winter is over because their water was quite cold. I have not seen any breeding yet, and I've had them a couple of weeks. I do have land snails and those do breed nicely.

      + Marks Shrimp Tanks, Cheers for the egg shell advice,
      Ive recently created a wildlife garden pond, and put 10 Ramshorn snails in it, and they dont even mind the pond freezing over for days on end, as they appear to migrate to the bottom of the pond when it gets really cold, since it got warmer, they are all hanging around just below the surface, (Ramshorn snails are good for garden ponds, as they eat rotting leaves, and that prevents the tannin from discolouring the pond water), Ive got no air pump in the pond, but Ive got some oxygenating plants, they appear to like Hornwort, I dont know if they are eating it, or just hanging around in it.

    what's the difference in TDS and gh

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  7 років тому

      Gh measures General Hardness while TDS measure the Total Disolved Solids which would be everything that it can read.
      because I use RO water the TDS is only ever going to be a measure of the Gh anyway because of the salts I use to buffer,The salty bee shrimp buffer I use only buffer up the gh ,This might not be 100%accurate but it gives you an idea of what I am talking about..tds100 would be a 4 gh .tds 120 would be a 5gh tds 140 would be a 6gh and so on .
      The only thing I ever use now is a tds meter:)

    I literally can't stop these guys breeding, they just don't ever stop. On the plus side they make excellent algae and cleaner crews. I've seen only 1 medium size snail completely renovate an anubia plant. In less than a week the plant which was quite badly marked with green and brown algae, was 70% clean. 2 weeks it was stripped clean. Prolific doesn't quite describe how quickly they multiply :)

    • @metrikal1
      @metrikal1 5 років тому +1

      @@MarksShrimpTanks ya man, I've been looking around, and it seems like all the top breeders who are selling recomend the tablets, I don't think a cuttle bone is accessible enough, the tablets they can just eat. I also noticed my shrimp were grazing on it too, I think it'll be super beneficial to them. Anyway, good luck man, I love your videos!

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  5 років тому +1

    • @metrikal1
      @metrikal1 5 років тому +2

      @@MarksShrimpTanks Hmm, I don't have any experience to back it up, but if you're using cuttlebone, it would make sense because the soft water would make it more "melty" so they can eat it better. The harder water would make it disolve less, so they can't scrape it off. I really hope the tablets work for me, because I hate seeing them all beat up. Anyway, thank you so much for sharing your experience, if I get good or bad results I'll come back and let you know

      Hello Yanny ,I bought 10 last year and the plan was to sell them but I never really got round to looking after them properly and no I m not picking small ones ,they are the biggest I have got ..theY really dont like soft water.
      The tub is hard water and I can already see they have been doing things in there lol :D

      lol.
      yeah. noticed they didnt like soft water. was one of my main problems here.
      Scottish water is a bit soft. 😅
      you may need to pull out any brown ones that may appear. often found my reds still produced brown young.
      The variety of ramshorns is fascinating. started myself with 5 red and 5 brown.
      :)

    Mark did you add a full cap of Prime to that 5 gallon tote:) that's enough to treat 50 gallons and it will bind with oxygen after it gets all the chlorine :)....crap assassin snail eat shrimp? i better feed mine good

      @MarksShrimpTanks  8 років тому

      No it was probably 8th of a cap ,I normally only put a few drops in when I use tapwater ,If you feed your assassins they wont eat your Shrimp ..mines liked a high protein pellet and started to breed lol.
      Eventually I caught all of them and moved them to my daughters fishtank .

    Did your snail breeding project go badly?

    • @MarksShrimpTanks
      @MarksShrimpTanks  5 років тому +1

      Yes but not in the way you think, there were thousands of them in there so much so it was super messy and hard to clean, I eventually changed them over to a round based bucket .

      I have Ramshorn Snails, Mystery Snails, Nerite Snails, Spixi Snails, Malaysian Trumpet Snails, and Pond Snails together. The Nerite Snails eat the eggs of the others. So I am only getting a few Trumpet Snails born.
