I had not previously seen Robert Smith play electric guitar on this song. JLH is, in my estimation, one of the greatest pop songs ever!
he is only playing an electric guitar because at the time pearl had just left the band leaving him as the only guitarist so he would use the electric guitar to play the lead parts as well as his usual parts
Tho I am a metal/thrash dude, I have always respected and grown up on the Cure. Words cannot describe the RESPECT I have for Rob. A brilliant musician and songwriter and, to be his age, all the crap he's been thru, and STILL, to sound like he's still in his 20's!! I'm in frickin' awe. . .

It is remarkable that The Cure have been a band with immense continuity since their inception in 1973. I’ve loved them since first hearing them (in 1989, when I was 13). But then saw them on the Wish Tour in 92, by which time they were my favourite band. However, I don’t agree that this is their best song/musical accomplishment. With the exception of specific tracks withholding in numerous albums; “Play for Today”, “Open” & “A letter to Elise” for example. The Cure’s greatest genius had been collectively exemplified, upon at least 6 of the 8 tracks on “Pornography”, (The Hanging Garden, & the title track being the only comparatively “less than gallantly great” songs) on an otherwise awesome, monumentally inspirational, indecipherable, & timeless album of genuine angst & boundless beauty! The only Cure album that I think is secondary to “Pornography” has to be “Disintegration”, though only just exceeding 2, or perhaps, 3 other albums throughout their “catalogue”. Now remember: don’t be part of the disease when you could be a part of THE CURE! 😉X
