      Portuguese/Galician is older than Spanish and was wide spoken at Iberia for centuries while Castellano was still enclosed to Castilla. Spain oldest national literature is in Portuguese - Cantigas de Santa Maria.
      Any language once sang by Gilberto can hope to be the most beautiful.

      Upgrade2344 the song means "bad singer" or "i can't sing" in portuguese. I don't know much about the lore behind the song but one can conclude that he propably heard a lot of people saying that he is a bad singer. Nevertheless he wrote a song about it this. This starts with "if you say to me that i am bad singer, love. Know that this brings so much pain. Only priviligied ones has ears like yours and i have only what god gaves me." Is preety much irony. He is saying to the critics "great you have awesome ears but you can't write, play pr sing".

    • @legattostacatto4805
      @legattostacatto4805 7 років тому +2

      Keep in mind that is very hard to translate this song. When he says "só privilegiados tem ouvidos iguais ao seus". He is not talking about her ears fisically. He is talking about the ability that one can have to hear, interpretate and feel the music. I don't know a word or phrase in english that fits well in this point

      João Gilberto always answered the same thing : "I always played samba". And after a brilliant concert of one of the top jazz pianists, a friend of mine asked to a great brazilian musician who was there : "why does it sound so awkward when he tries to play bossa-nova ?", same kind of answer : "he does'nt know anything about samba". Some people called bossa-nova "sambinha" (little samba) or "appartment samba"… Chords and rhythm are not only scores, it's culture.

      An interesting note: Bossa Nova is actually not authentic brazillian style. The bossa nova back at the days was criticized by alot of brazillians as "american music" because of the relations to jazz that came from the west. Joao gilberto took the samba rhythm placed it on the guitar and mixed it with jazz chords and thats how bossa nova came alive..

  • @imaginativelads

    Gorgeous. I came here to do some research on this tune, expecting to hear a nice performance (as to be expected) and I am blown away with how beautiful this man treats the melody and the way that he chose his chords here!

      João Gilberto created the bossa-nova : the guitar rythm pattern, the harmony, the way to sing , the phrasing and the syncopation. This man IS the bossa-nova by himself !

      the voicings and chord choices alone here are such a lesson. It's just so beautifully done....
      I don't think I've ever seen a better exploration of the harmonic possibilities of the guitar than displayed here. Absolutely sublime

    • @holygroove2
      @holygroove2 2 роки тому

      @@Muzikman127 Thing is that it's not just the harmony. If it was only the harmony, that would be enough. His placement of the melody with the chords is ridiculously laid back - very difficult to imitate this, and yet it sounds amazing. His guitar is constant, but the way he's singing the melody is master level. I realize that this is obvious, but I had to say it anyways. He gets so much emotion from laying back vocally, and rhythmically with the melody.

    Masterpiece. João Gilberto can make the most complex music sound like the most simple sound. Like a note that just shocks your brain with some weird sensation, "desafinado" challenges the melodic patterns that you may expect coming from any bossa nova song. Yet, there's something about this track... it invades the security of your ears, unleashing notes that shouldn't be together, and yet, are. Soulful, warm, beautiful... João Gilberto, what a genius.
