Thanks for this video, Lyn! I have seen this kind of thing before. It seems to be very common. It's nice to know it's harmless. Naturally we always want our plants to look perfect, but in nature all sorts of things might happen to them, and at home too. Plants are just like us, and we aren't perfect either. Naturally our first concern when we see something on our plants is that it could be a disease or something dangerous. I liked how you were gently caressing your cactus while you explained it. Learn so much about the cacti from you. For instance, the fact that you should not water them in the winter because this does not get explained by the companies selling them. In fact, they mostly say water when thoroughly dry and since I have used your instructions instead, my few cactus are doing so much better. Love your channel and Sean's channel as well. SUNBURN. I have san pedro that got sunburnt and I was worried. One and possibly a second one will get the eloation cut off because they actually started to rot from the sunburn. But I looked up the causes and realised what had happened and the outcome gives a grey corking. A bit like what I see on some bridgesii that I have recently bought cuttings for. Collapsed in heavy winds and these are heavily scabbed bits that don't look nice enough to sell to show in a garden. But they're over 20 years old so they should root and hopefully in a couple years give me some perfect pups to replant. That's MY PLAN anyway. Just hope they're not too badly scabbed to photosynthesise.
The wonderful news is Cacti can recover well from sunburn over time, and even heavily scabbed cacti can still photosynthesise, and all the new growth will be green, I have had quite a few cacti get severe sunburn in the past and they cork over and scab and new pups will grow from the corky Mother plants, thanks so much for your wonderful comments and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday XXXX

Hi Shel, so happy you enjoy the videos, sometimes a cactus can be soft at the bottom due to it naturally having a spongy base, e.g Mammillaria's, and as the cactus takes up water from its body stores the cactus can go softer, this happens a lot during their Winter rest, and as long as the soft parts are not brown or smell bad, then it is very possible that this is normal and you don't need to worry, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Wednesday XXXX

Hi, thanks for posting this. I have a small cactus or cactus-like plant. It seems to be doing okay, it's slowly growing bit by bit. I've repotted it recently and water it with 1/2 strength miracle grow. It looks like it has more corking recently, but I thought it was too small to begin corking. Could it be from injury? Pic provided upon request.
Hi there :-D the good news is cacti can start corking when they are still small once they are mature, as long as the corking is not soft or any signs of rot with a bad smell, it should be absolutely fine, sometimes an injury or knock to the plant can cause this corking too, but if it looks like it is spreading fast I would double check that it is not signs of root rot, as rot can spread up from the base up the plant, thanks so much for watching, Sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Friday XXXX
Ive had that on some cactus. One euphorbia trigona did get it caused by spiders. Sprayed and got well. But others got it with no reason and all the babies also

Hello Lyn! I was wondering if you have any video on Rust Fungus on cacti? Every year, I buy some cacti because I love them, but it never fails, winter comes & they get infected with rust fungus, and I have no idea why or how. I keep them cold & dry. But I admit the environment is humid & not much I can do about it.
So sorry to hear about your cacti getting affected by Rust fungus, its such an annoying thing to happen and I have had it happen a few times to my cacti especially my Lophophoras and the extra special types of cacti, but since getting a dehumidifier I have not had it happen on any of my cacti since, I definitely think its due to the higher humidity, it can be difficult though over the winter with humidity, but if its not possible to get a dehumidifier, then if you could install a circulating fan as air movement helps to prevent rust, a systemic fungicide spray can also help to stop rust from spreading, I have used a brand by 'Fungus Clear Ultra' on Amazon, and it has worked in the past for stopping rust from spreading on some of my cacti, its a systemic and works its way through the plant, I will definitely plan on making a video about Rust , thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday XXXX
Hii. I don’t believe it is caused by age. Depends on what kind of corking. An euphorbia trigona got it and was caused by red spiders. Eventually treated and disappeared. Now I have a pachipodium, it doesn’t die but stops its development. Another mammilaria also has it and all its babies have it also. I believe it is a kind of fungus.
Red Spider mite is such a pain and can cause this scarring, I find using neem oil treatments helps to get rid of spider mites, I notice that the scarring from spider mites is more orange yellow than the natural corking which appears more on the lower parts and base of the cactus, thanks so much for watching and have a wonderful plant powered Wednesday XXXX

Is it at all common for cactus rot to be dry and firm? I'm not sure how high my hopes should be
Hi there, yes sometimes cacti can get a type of dry rot too, but usually with the dry rot the cactus will eventually fall apart or cave in, it may be best to remove your cactus from its pot to check over the roots to check that there is no sign of root rot that may have gone into the cactus, good luck with your cactus and thanks so much for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Tuesday XXXX
My trichocereus Peruvians is shedding flaky, white/clear, like skin. Have you ever heard of this? Thanks for the videos
Hi there :-D so happy you like the videos, it can be due to two things, it can be the outer skin on the cactus naturally shedding older skin that may be due to any past slight damage to the skin, a form of very light corking, the good news is its harmless, but sometimes clear like shredding skin can be caused from Scale insects, these little bugs look like little bumps on the cactus, they are almost clear with a very tiny brownish spot in the middle of the raised clear bump, the often flake off with a light touch, Trichocereus are very hardy against any pests if they get them, and scale insect can be killed and wiped off with rubbing alcohol, mine are often getting scale and I wipe off any I see with a q tip or a brush dipped in rubbing alcohol, the rubbing alcohol melts and kills the scales on contact and is harmless to the cactus, but if the flaky skin is coming off in little sheets I think its due to past skin damage to the cactus or from a change in environment, and the good news is its harmless,the other possibility is it could be a build up of lime from the nutrients in the soil or water and is also harmless, good luck with your peruvianus and thanks so much for watching and for your wonderful comment, wishing you a fantastic plant powered Tuesday XXXX
Can I ask I have rescued some cactus that I believe have mealy bug and a jumping like spider fly
I have sprayed them with diluted rubbing alcohol is there anything I can purchase to help with pests please as I don’t want my collection being affected I’m only new to this
Hi Melinda -Jane :-D so sorry that you have pests on your plants, they are such a pain and can be so difficult to get rid of especially mealy bug, I do find that spraying cactus with pure rubbing alcohol does really help and this is what I use the most as I find a lot of the commercial pest sprays do not seem to be very effective anymore even the systemics do not work that well, I do use Bug clear ultra that is a systemic that you spray on and this works when the rubbing alcohol does not do the job as well. I got the same on an euphorbia trigosa and was told it had to do with spider mites so I put some plant insect spray and it did stop and started peeling off. Now it is clean But not on one of my mammilarias

Could anti fungal stop it ? Something is happening to one of mine and it’s creeping to the top fast . It’s not soft . But it’s ruining the beauty 😨
Hi there, unfortunately anti fungal sprays won't work against natural corking, but natural corking is usually slow to develop and if its spreading up the plant fast it could be caused by something else, you can still spray with an anti fungal to be on the safe side, thanks so much for watching and have a wonderful new plant powered week XXXX

What is the blue cactus at 4:35?
+Lane Mc Thanks a million for watching :-) the cactus at 4:35 is also a Pilosocereus but I am not sure of the exact type as there are a few different types of the Pilosocereus cacti but they all have a wonderful blue colored skin to them and they need a bit more warmth during the winter than some of the other Desert cacti as some of mine do scar a bit on the skin when kept cooler in the conservatory but they are very easy cacti to care for and grow :-) Sending much love and happy growing from Ireland and have a FANTASTIC Monday XXXXX
What many people don't realize is that cacti are shrubs related to roses. If you go into a rose garden, you will see that the new stems are smooth and green and that the oldest stems are brown and scaly. The same thing happens to cacti. It's just natures way.

Ive seen a youtube that says corking of cactus means too much moisture. I dunno if i should believe him. Im still learning about these wonderful plants. They are a challenge. I live in a tropical country. Yet i still need to protect them from the elements. The sun, wind, water, animals, etc kills them. Those poor fragile little creatures.

Hi, I would like your opinion on a cactus that I have. Oddly the base is the narrowest part of the cactus. I guess it has turned to cork like you describe but it does not grow and remains narrow. I was thinking this limits the growth above that point and I am trying to get the courage to cut it above the base to a point that is thicker and try to root the cut off section. I would appreciate your advice on this and whether it can be done or should I just leave it alone? Here is a video I did of the cactus in 2011. +NewEnglandgardening Hi there :-)You have a wonderful channel and I have subbed :-) thats a BEAUTIFUL Stenocereus thurberii :-) and its a WONDERFUL large size and it looks very healthy :-) I have one also very similar with the thin base at the bottom, the good news is that because you have this wonderful cactus supported, then the thinner base won't be a problem at all and I would tend to leave it rather than cutting it and treating it as a cutting, but if you would rather cut it and start again from the thicker part, then you can cut it and treat the top part as a cutting once you have left the cutting to 'callus' over for a few weeks :-) but if it was me, I would leave it be as its always difficult sometimes to re root these plants and because yours is a BEAUTY and very healthy looking you won't need to worry about it limiting the growth at the top part, I think its best to leave it and keep it supported :-) Thanks so much for sharing with us and sending heaps of love and happy growing from Ireland and have a brilliant weekend XXXXX
+Desert Plants of Avalon OK thanks, I'll probably take your advice and just leave it alone. How do you get this cactus to flower. It has never produced flowers. Do I have to mimic it's natural growing conditions or maybe water at the right time of year? Just watching the news here, watch out for those fire engines.
NewEnglandgardening Thanks so much :-) I know when it comes to flowering, they usually need to be a very large size and a great age until they flower, sometimes over 30 plus years or more, mine has never flowered either, but I am optimistic that in time both ours will flower :-) sometimes though these plants won't flower when grown indoors, but if you are able to put your cactus outside in the Summer months and give it a dry resting period during the Winter, this greatly helps to encourage blooming :-) and I bet we will be blessed with lots of blooms on our Stenocereus cacti in the future :-) Sending tons of love and happy growing fro a fantastic Sunday XXXXXX

I think it’s so weird when people don’t like the appearance of corking on cacti and succulents…… plants are never going to be perfect, they should be glad their plant is happy enough to not only survive but thrive and reach maturity. If they expect perfection then growing plants is probably not for them. Go into any real nursery with good prices and there’s always imperfections on plants just like in nature that’s the way it is. This is coming from someone who has severe ocd and grows house plants. Outside plants are pretty the imperfections are beautiful.

I just found out it's not actually a cactus 🌵 cacti 🌵 more like a succulent or plant as much as it's hard to believe buying it having spikes and sharp needle 💉💉 prickly thorns
