I watched this last year and follow your tips and I woke this morning to a beautiful captus flower. Ty soooooo much. He so beautiful, and I was getting ready to give him away because he will not grow straight and is determined to look like a prick😂. I love him again

Oh my god I have a crested cactus but just one stem is long it's a Cleistocactus. It was 4 inches when I got it 2yrs ago I now have a 2ft long penile stem coming out of a giant crested mass. The girl in the garden centre where I bought it said when it came in that morning they were all in stitches bcoz it was semi-erect, my confidence took quite a knock bcoz it's very floppy now. 😂
@@desertplantsofavalonHiya Lynn I don't know if you have Homebase in the north but in the Navan Meath branch they do a pet/child friendly mealy bug/spider mite/aphids etc. natural pesticide special offer 2 bottles for 12 euro, in garden centres it's 13 euro for 1 bottle, it's made in the UK so it may be very easily available, it's called ecofective bug & mildew control. Also I use Westland Cacti & succulent liquid feed. Should I use your tomato one instead? Loved the video always so helpful, informative & enthusiastic. Love to you & Hans. Bonny & Bernie 👍🌵🐕💚
@@berniedarbey9010 Hi Bernie :-D So happy you loved the video and thats brilliant about the ecofective bug and mildew control, we have Homebase here too and I will go and check our local Homebase, the good news is the Westland cacti and succulent feed is good quality and also higher in potash for flowering and will be perfect to use instead of the tomato feed, thanks so much Bernie for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from Belfast for a wonderful Wednesday today XXXX
Thank you for this video....the only thing I had not been doing was to give the cacti enough sunlight in the winter. I will correct that this year. Again, thank you for your information!!

When the weather where I live gets too warm I come and watch this video. I live in Phoenix and in the spring the Desert Botanical Garden is flush with brilliant colors and I can never get enough visits in but this year and last year I haven been able to visit so I have been watching this video more than a few times to fill the void. If you haven’t been the Phoenix Arizona yet you must come to visit and go to the Desert Botanical Gardens.

How do people get their cacti to flower during winter? I see so many people on my Trichocereus groups I’m in, posting pictures of their flowering Trichocereus cacti during the winter months. I’m trying to get my Trichocereus cacti to flower during winter. My cacti do bloom in spring and summer but I’d love for them to bloom in winter too. Thank you for all the beautiful videos you make. I wouldn’t be so successful in growing cacti without your advice. I appreciate it so much.
Thank you so much for your wonderful words, I think a lot of growers may be using special grow lights to get them to bloom in Winter, but getting them to bloom in Winter when they are normally having their Winter rest can weaken them in the long term, as Trichocereus and their Desert Cacti like to have a rest period in the darker months, a few growers that live in the Southern hemisphere like Australia and South Africa will be getting their cacti in bloom at this time of year though, Thanks so much for your wonderful comments and support,
thanks so much Nancy for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXX
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼❤️ I love your advice. Temp where I live is lows around 17 winter to 23-35 most year round so our growing conditions are very different but you give me heaps of ideas to try which help me so much! Sending you sunshine from Sydney 👍🏼 you're the best 😘

Thanks Lyn for another great video! I'm over wintering my plants now. In the south hemisferio we need to place plants on north facing windows, so they get as much sun as possible. My rebutia muscula is shooting some pups, but they are growing long instead of round... I don't know what the deal is with that... But i will make an update video on my plants in a couple of weeks... And mammillaria plumosa is flowering, tiny yellow flowers 😍 Huge hugs from Uruguay!!
Thank you so much Laura for your wonderful comment :-) thats such brilliant news that you have your Rebutia muscula growing some pups and your Mammillaria plumosa flowering, I bet its an absolute BEAUTY :-) and so looking forward to watching and update video of your plants, it may be your Rebutia pups will grow rounder as they get more mature as sometimes the new baby shoots can grow a little bit long and then round up, but keep me updated on them :-) thanks a million for watching Laura and Sending you lots of love and heaps of happiness from Ireland to Uruguay and have a FANTASTIC Sunday XXXXX
Great tips, thanks. Also especially Schlumbergera doesn't seem to like hard water, which is why I boil mine before watering all my plants basically (only have a few) since our water here is very hard. The Schlumbergera i also will spray with a little water sometimes. I had it bloom twice this first year I had it so it seems to work well. Used regular cactus soil from the shop.
Thats so wonderful that you had your Schlumbergera flower twice the first year :-) thanks so much for your fantastic comments and for watching and sending tons of love and happiness and heaps of plant power from right across the Emerald Isle for a fantastic new week ahead XXXX
Desert Plants of Avalon Thanks, Sweety. Could definitely need some love right now. Wishing you the same! PS: Just earlier I had another mold alert. I just have to water my Schlumbergera and my Phoenix Canariensis even less, especially not too much at once I figure. I freed the plants from as much of the earth as possible, cleaned the clay pots and replaced the earth completely. I hope that'll do for now. I'll let them dry out completely before watering them again, even though the Schlumbie supposedly likes it slightly wet on a regular basis. Wish me luck ;)
Such an excellent informative video, Lynn!!!! This is my second year with cacti and the flowering this Spring is being simply amazin... mammillarias, lobivias, echinopsis, parodias, rebutias... you name it, all of them with tons of beautiful flowers!!! It's funny how your 5 steps really describe the overwintering conditions my cacti have been in. They spend the winter in what could be called cold greenhouses -under tables or structures covered with plastic and bubble wrap- - and although they sure stand pretty high temperatures during the daytime - I'm in Spain after all and they've got as much sun as they needed- these go down to close to 0ºC by night. Last year I did use fertiliser for cacti and it also probably helped. I use the good soil on the market -which for me is working wonderfully well- and they certainly are underpoted :) I've also got flowering from plants that spent the winter outdoors (echinopsis polygona or multiplex, ferocactus glaucescens, aloe variegata, echeveria setosa and others... in spite of rainfalls, etc. (in fact, the aloes bloomed during thw winter and they looked spectacular.) Also, I'm not sure if the extra watering they've got during april and may helped them flowering as we got non-stop rains for complete weeks when they were already outdoors - and when I say outdoors I mean REALLY outdoors, with no roof of any kind above them
Thank you so much Alex for your fantastic comment :-) thats absolutely brilliant that you have so many of your cacti all blooming lovely, and so happy to hear that you have such an amazing collection of so many beautiful plants :-) I bet your Aloes were incredible blooming over the Winter :-) you are so blessed living in Spain with those gorgeous warm temperatures and sunny skies but its amazing to think that you had weeks of non stop rain, I thought it was only here in Ireland that got the rain like that haha! all your plants are loving the care you are giving them and they all so happy to be blooming :-) thanks a million for watching Alex and sending you an abundance of love and heaps of happiness and happy growing from right across the Emerald Isle to Spain and have a WONDERFUL evening XXXXXX
It certainly is good for plants, especially for cacti and succulents... bt I'm not that fnd of warm weather. I'm happier wearing warm clothes and an umbrella :) We've got a saying in Spain, "Cuando en marzo mayea, en mayo marcea": when in March you get the weather you should be getting in May, in May you'll get March's, and this is what happened: an amazingly hot and dry March and then lots and lots of rain in April/May. All my cacti and succulents were outside by the time and I just sheltered the very sensitive ones, the remaining getting all that rain and, believe me, it was a lot of it! . I'm thankful all of them seem healthy (fat and healthy!)
WOW. I admire your cactus growing ability. I don't know how you don't stress out with so many of them. I brought one succulent cactus at my local flower shop here in Minnesota. Had my cactus now for about 3 months, she is doing well. only thing is she started to develop what looks to be flowers that want to open up but they don't. Other then that, doing well, I love my cactus, but I worry a lot. I get home, first thing I do many times is go check how my cactus is doing. I feel like she is my child. lol Thank you for the great videos, new to your channel, I'll keep watching.
Thanks so much for your wonderful comment :-) thats such brilliant news that you have bought a cactus and its coming into bud :-) sometimes the buds can take a few weeks before they will open and there is a very good chance our cactus is developing its buds slowly and will amazed you very soon with incredible blooms :-) LOL! I know what you mean about them feeling like your cactus is your child, I am like that with my plants too, i worry about them all the time :-) thanks a million for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happy growing from Ireland to Minnesota and have a BRILLIANT Sunday ahead today XXXXX

10:20. Totally agree on the trash they use in nurseries. The peat moss is a problem and in my opinion should not even be used at all. I have used the cat litter and don't see a problem so long as it is the cheap kind that doesn't clump. I also mix it about equal parts with decomposed granite and native soil which has sand, clay and more decomposed granite. Then I have mixed in vermiculite, (don't like it because it's so fluffy) and now switched to perlite, (better but too light and floats off like vermiculite but not as bad). What I keep asking for is pumice but so far not finding it anywhere local.
Thanks billions John on your wonderful comments :-) so true the trash they use in nurseries is so awful and the peat is so bad and dries like a brick and is almost impossible to re wet again , I have had brilliant results with cat litter too, and it makes a brilliant top dressing for the plants, funny enough pumice seems to have vanished here in Ireland too, you can't find it anywhere and none of the garden centres can find anywhere that they can order it from anymore which is odd, thanks so much for watching and sending you tons of love and happy growing from Ireland to the American south west and have a WONDERFUL day ahead XXXXXX

I have a lady finger cactus plant that I “rescued” from my sister. I had to repot it and trim it down because it was over grown. After repotting it in a bigger pot in Mircle grow citrus and cactus plant soil, it started to grow a bit too much and I had to trim it back down. Then it started to grow again and now it’s starting to flower! I wonder if I need to do anything different now? I water it once a month and I keep it on my patio in my apartment.
Hi Karima :-D well done on rescuing your lady finger cactus from your Sister :-D well done on getting it to flower and it seems like you have done everything right and keep up what you are doing

Thank you so much for the tips! I recently get into collecting cacti. I live in Saskatchewan Canada, and the temperature of our winter here is from 30-45 celcius, so I’m gonna have to bring them inside. Unfortunately I dont have a very bright windows to place them so I invested for some good grow lights, will this be enough? How cold should I keep the room for them and do I stop watering them? Thank you!
Thats fantastic you have recently got into collecting these incredible plants, yes grow lights are fantastic for overwintering cacti and succulents, and grow lights are like mobile windows as you can place them anywhere, its best to stop watering them altogether until the spring and ideally keep them in an unheated room no higher than 60 Fahrenheit, if you have epiphytic cacti and Melocacti you can still keep these lightly watered during the winter about once a month, but all the other cacti and succulents you can keep them dry and as cool as possible, and keep the grow lights on for the same amount of hours a day you would normally get in the winter time just enough to keep them overwintered but to prevent them growing. thanks so much Nico for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Canada for a terrific Thursday XXXX

Hi Lynn, Are you comfortable with giving advise? I’m wondering if I should give my cactus one last deep watering before winter. It’s getting down into the upper 50’s at night now and I’m thinking should they be watered one last time? They are all very, very dry. They’re all true desert plants.
Hi there :-D yes if they are all very dry I would give them all one last watering now, and then keep them all unwatered after that until the following Spring, I have just finished giving all my Desert Cacti their last good water of the year, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Thursday XXXX

Hey there! I think I have a mammillaria cactus. I got a couple of flowers, one night only a few months ago (summer), I am from Argentina. I was not able to polinate though, as I didn't know what to do with it, though now I do thanks to you! What I did notice is that it doesn't have any pups and it roots are quite short. Should I repot it so it gets more space or how does it gets pups? It has a nice color and as it got florwers I image it's in good condition. Thanks!
This was very helpful information, thank you! But I have a question I hope you would answer: since I live in small apartment, which is heated during the winter, I can't really find a cool place to put my cacti and succulents and overwinter them. Can you suggest some tips about that please!
Hi there, so happy you enjoyed the video, the good news is that you can still overwinter your cacti and succulents indoors if it is heated, if you can still keep them dry over the winter they should still overwinter well but you may need to still lightly water any that show signs of shrivelling especially the succulents, some cacti need a cool overwintering to flower but many will still flower after being overwintered in a heated environment too as they are controlled by the day length and lighting levels also, if its possible to keep them dry and ideally away from artificial light sources they will overwinter well for you, I have to overwinter some of my cacti and succulents indoors now too, and I place a piece of cardboard across the radiators so the heat still goes into the room but away from the windows and this can help keep the plants that bit cooler too
Great tips especially to keep them dust free. I am not able to keep my cacti in an unheated room over winter so I am expecting them not to flower. I could keep them in our garage but it does not get any light so would that cause them damage? Thanks so much for this video xxx
Thanks so much Paula for your brilliant comments :-) its always a dilemma when it comes to finding the right temperature for overwintering, if I was you though I would still keep them in the heated room, rather than in the garage, because although a few peeps I know overwinter their cacti in their cellars and garages with no windows, I have never done this myself, you may find that some of your plants will still flower though, because I keep my Haworthia's and gasterias in my living room that is heated and they still bloom for me, and because cacti and succulents are triggered into flowering by the longer day lengths too, you may still get blooms :-) some of the Mammillaria's flower very readily even without their winter rest :-) and I would still keep them in the warm room if i was you :-) I would really love to look more into overwintering them in cellars and garages though because there are a lot of people who do really well with this :-) thanks so much for watching Sis and sending oodles of love and happiness to you and Tom, Mabel and Monty from right across the emerald Isle to Swindon for a MAGICAL filled new week ahead XXXXX
Thank for the tips. I found the one with pot size is useful because I was often advised of putting cacti in deep pots so they could have strong roots. I have a question about the first tip. Is keeping cacti cold and dry in winter fit for all the species? I mean, I know trichocereus and echinopsis need such treatment to flower, but how about Mammillaria and Gymnocalycium? thanks for sharing.
Hi there :-D you can plant multiple cacti into a large bowl as long as the cacti are similar with their care requirements, as some cacti are epiphytic and others are more desert ones, but if the cacti are mixed desert types and you leave space around each one for them to grow its great to plant multiple cacti together, thanks so much for watching and for your wonderful comment and have a fantastic plant powered day XXXX
Hello Lyn, I am planning on getting some wonderful cacti soon. Also inspirated by you of course. Wonderful and very helpful videos. Also your plants are amazing! Hi, I'm new to cactus and learning alot from your channel. In order to make cactus bloom I should not water cactus at all in winter? Like no water at all for full 3-4 months? Or i should water them once every month for example? Thanks in advance
Hi there :-D it can depend on your climate and temperature and the type of cactus you are growing, but the majority of desert type of cacti like to be kept dry and cool over the Winter for the full 3-4 months with no water, but if you have your plants in a very warm room or they are very small you may still need to give them a light watering every 6 weeks, but if you have tropical cacti like Melocactus or Dragon fruit cactus or the epiphytic cacti like the Christmas and Thanksgiving and Easter cacti and the Epiphyllums you will still need to water these once every 2-3 weeks, but all the Desert cacti varieties like to be kept dry and unwatered until the Spring, and here is link to a page I have wrote on my website on more info on How to Overwinter Cacti: desertplantsofavalon.com/overwintering/ thanks so much for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Sunday XXXX

The flowers on my cactus closed up wilted and turned brown/black due to leaving in car heat for too long. It has two branch like stems that are drooping more and more. Is it possible for the flowers to revive? If so Should I cut off the flowers? Or even the branch stems? I just feel that the stems will take so long to grow back i don’t want to cut them.
Hi there :-D so sorry to hear about the flowers on your cactus, if they have gone brown they will not be able to be revived and you would be best to cut them off, but leave the branch stems as its possible new buds may form along the stem depending on the type of cactus that you have, but usually the cactus will abort the flower stem a few days after the flower has died and this may happen to yours too, but I am sure that you will get plenty of flowers on your cactus in the future :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald isle for a TERRIFIC Thursday today XXXXXX
Thanks so much Diana for your wonderful comment :-) I used to have most of them in clay pots as I love the look of clay pots, they are far more attractive then plastic pots, but over time I have found that the soil medium inside the clay pots tend to dry out a bit to fast and I have had a few problems with re potting with the roots sticking to the sides of the clay pots so switched over to using plastic pots a few years back, I still keep some of the more delicate small varieties of cacti in the small clay pots though :-) thanks so much for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness from Ireland for a wonderful Sunday XXXX

It can be a little bit trickier for flowering if you get warm Winters, but if you can still keep the plants a little more on the dry side with watering, then the shorter days will still help to encourage blooming :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald isle for a fantastic Friday XXXXX
Thanks a million Debbie for all your wonderful comments Sis :-) I am really pleased with all the blooms on the plants this year and the Tomato feed works a treat at helping to produce more blooms and I haven't had any tomatoes on any of them yet haha! thanks so much for watching and sending you an abundance of love and heaps of happiness and Angels from right across the Emerald Isle to Southern Indiana and have a MAGNIFICENT day :-) XXXXX
+Desert Plants of Avalon haha, wouldn't that be a delicious miracle if you did get a cactus to grow tomatoes? I don't know about you but I live tomatoes! 👍😂
Hi Lyn, thanks for the important information you gave us! We have loads and loads of sun here in Malta so our cactus will surely be happy! Thanks again and keep safe!
You can use any well draining soil for epiphyllums and because they are not as rot prone as the Desert cacti, you don't need to worry about adding extra sand or loam and you can use any good quality houseplant compost and add a bit of extra perlite or grit for the extra drainage : -) XXXXX
Hi Lyn, 2nd time watching this interesting video! Can you tell me the name of the video 'How to keep cactus dust free' pls! Thank you! Have a beautiful Saturday afternoon!
So happy you enjoyed watching the video again Sylvia :-D here is the link to the video on How to keep Cactus dust free: ua-cam.com/video/m2Bihzw8t2Q/v-deo.html XXXXX
on lighting, will grow lights work as well? I am in a very awkward climate and tend to have trees block what I do get so considering using a grow light and a timer.
Hi Richard :-) thanks a million for your wonderful comments :-) unfortunately I have never used grow lights and wouldn't be the best one to give you advice on them, but I do know that many growers have very good success with using grow lights if they can provide the correct amount of lux they need for photosynthesis and for flowering etc :-) thanks so much for watching and sending tons of love and heaps of happy growing from Ireland for a wonderful week ahead XXXX
Desert Plants of Avalon I would like to visit Ireland but sadly that's above my budget. but I can enjoy the scenery through your videos lol. I managed to safely remove those dumb fake flowers hot glued to them without damage. I think it will be a while before I try a graft, but I think for my wife a good Hardy rootstock will be beneficial in case she gets heavy handed with the water. but it's torment to even consider taking a knife to my cactus.
I'm worried about my plants and when I need to water because I have killed some from June 2016 this winter. I have them all in a pot together and I need help please.
Hi Amber :-) here is a link to a page i have wrote for my website on how to water Cacti and succulents it may help a bit more :-)www.desertplantsofavalon.com/how-to-water-your-cacti-and-succulent-plants/ sending you much love and happiness from Ireland for a wonderful day XXXXX

hi, my cactus has buds for about a month but doesn't flowers ,they are Echinopsis and my mammillaria's buts got dried of , can I get any suggestions to make them flowers and possible reasons for not blooming , last week I bought a foliar spray (sodium benzoate and amino acid dextrose) is it preferable??
Thank you so much Michael for your wonderful comment and for watching :-) Sending you lots of love and heaps of happiness and heaps of happy growing and have a FANTASTIC Sunday ahead today XXXXX
Thanks so much Aaron for your wonderful comment :-) the purple Aeonium is a wonderful and very easy plant to grow, they do flower, but they have to reach a good age before they bloom, but the bloom appears on a large spike and the flowers are yellow and small and very pretty and shaped like daisies:-) mine has never flowered though as it is still quite young, but will be amazing when it does :-) thanks so much for watching and sending you heaps of love and happiness from Ireland to Canada for a FAB Sunday XXXXXX
+Desert Plants of Avalon thanks I would love to try and find one! I have a green one. the only way I have had success propagating them is by de heading them. the leaves just shrivel. is there another way to propigate them?
Kid Vs World Hi Aaron :-) The only way I have tried to propagate them is from de heading them, but I am pretty sure they would be able to be grown from seed too, although because they only flower at a large size, seed may be difficult to get hold of :-) Sending heaps of love from Ireland to Canada and have a FAB new week ahead XXXX :-)
+Desert Plants of Avalon ok I de headed a green one about a year ago and the new growth is only like half an inch long?!?!? why is that? they grow really fast before you cut them?!?!?
Kid Vs World Don't worry about the slow growth, its because its sending most of its energy into making a good root system first, and that can take a good few months, once it has rooted really well it will start to grow fast again, when I root up a head of them, they often don't grow at all for the first few months :-) I bet yours will be growing super fast in the coming months :-) XXXXX
Thanks so much for watching and your wonderful comment :-) yes the N.P.K is 5.1-5.1-6.7. sending tons of love and happy growing and have a wonderful Tuesday today XXXX
Hi Ramel :-) unfortunately I have no experience of growing Cacti in a tropical country and would not be the best one to give advice as I only know growing these plants in Ireland and UK, so sorry about that but hope you will be able to find out the right advice :-) you could try some of the Cactus forums to see if there are any other growers that have the same conditions as you and here is a link to a good forum called CactiGuide.Com :-) www.cactiguide.com/forum/ hope this helps and sending heaps of love and happy growing from Ireland XXXX
Hi Lyn! You have a message at the start saying some plants may never bloom indoors..any particular cacti that may not bloom indoors? Only ones that have to be very large before flowering?
Hi Peter :-) thanks so much for watching :-) yes there are a few of the Cereus types that need to grow very large until they will flower such as the very popular Pilocereus variety of cacti, and many of the other tall growing variety of different cereus types, many of the larger growing columnar cacti types will often will only flower if grown outdoors, Saguaros will never flower indoors, as they need to reach a great height outdoors or in a large glasshouse indoors and plenty of root space to mature enough to flower, and many Opuntias although not impossible can be difficult to get to flower indoors too even in very bright conditions, many of the commonly seen Ferocacti need to grow quite large until they will bloom, some of the most easiest to get to flower indoors are the Gymnocalyciums, Rebutia's, mammillaria's and echinopsis/ chamaecereus and Lobivia varieties, as these all flower when young :-) Sending you tons of love and heaps of happiness from right across the Emerald Isle and have BRILLIANT new week ahead XXXXX
+Desert Plants of Avalon yes I asked because I have 2 candican varieties and a grandiflorus and I would be thrilled if they flowered ..one of the candicans is too young and small but the other..people say they take ages to have the first flower...anyway they haven't been with me long but crossing fingers!! I have had flowers on lobivia , subdenudata and others but my larger cacti as mentioned may need more encouragement and good weather...April and May have been awful here in Madrid
Peter Clarke Your grandiflorus will definitely be worth the wait, the blooms are such a STUNNERS, so sorry to hear the weather has been bad in Madrid, I would have thought it would be nice there, sending heaps of love and happy growing and fingers crossed the weather gets wonderful too :-) XXXXX
Hi there :-D from Spring until late Summer you can fertilise every 2-3 weeks, but it can depend on the type of cacti that you have, as the epiphytic cacti like the Christmas cactus like to be fertilised in Winter too, here is a link to my website www.desertplantsofavalon.com for more info :-D and happy growing to you and have a wonderful weekend ahead XXXXX
Hola. neceito tu ayuda. Dos de mis cactus se están pudriendo de la parte de arriba y no se que hacer. son manchas pero se ven que se están pudriendo, ayudame por favor.
Hi there :-) yes you can use the green bottle too :-) i think that the bottle does sometimes come in different colours and the last one I had was also green instead of red like the last time, and if you can't get hold of Maxicrop you can still use any other good tomato fertilizer too :-) thanks so much for watching and sending tons of love and happy growing from Ireland for a wonderful day XXXX
It is okay thank you and can I ask is a mammillaria candida an indoor or outdoor plant because I have one and I don't know where to place it sorry for a lot of question because it is my first time to have a cacti
Hi Ramel :-) Mammillaria candida can be both indoor or outdoor depending on where you are living and the rainfall levels and temperature, as long as you can place your Mammillaria in a very sunny well draining position it will do well, if you get a lot of rainfall where you live you would be best to grow indoors, place your Mammillaria in a window that receives as much sunshine as possible, preferably a south facing position, thats brilliant that you are new to growing cacti and If you would like lots of advice on growing cacti here is a link to my website that goes into detail about how to grow these wonderful plants : www.desertplantsofavalon.com/ Hope this helps and sending much love and happy growing from Ireland for wonderful week XXXX
I watched this last year and follow your tips and I woke this morning to a beautiful captus flower.
Ty soooooo much.
He so beautiful, and I was getting ready to give him away because he will not grow straight and is determined to look like a prick😂.
I love him again
Thats fantastic news your cactus has flowered Mary :-D and its always a wonderful surprise to see them bloom when we least expect them too, and yes LOL! some of these cacti are very funny shaped haha :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Thursday XXXX
Thats wonderful you enjoyed the video Cheryl, and thanks so much for your wonderful comments and support and for watching, wishing you a fantastic plant powered day today XXXX
Absolutely beautiful!! I was told by somebody who grows succulents to use citrus and avocado plant food! Once as soon as you plant and from then on...🤷♀️

Thats wonderful Erin :-D so happy to hear you enjoy watching this video and thanks so much for watching :-D I would LOVE to visit Phoenix Arizona and to visit the desert Botanic gardens would be a total dream come true :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from right across the Emerald Isle to Phoenix for a wonderful Friday today XXXX

Thank you so much for your wonderful words, I think a lot of growers may be using special grow lights to get them to bloom in Winter, but getting them to bloom in Winter when they are normally having their Winter rest can weaken them in the long term, as Trichocereus and their Desert Cacti like to have a rest period in the darker months, a few growers that live in the Southern hemisphere like Australia and South Africa will be getting their cacti in bloom at this time of year though, Thanks so much for your wonderful comments and support,
Thanks for the tips. I will give them a try and hope for flowers next year.
thanks so much Nancy for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful weekend XXXX

And mammillaria plumosa is flowering, tiny yellow flowers 😍
Huge hugs from Uruguay!!
Desert Plants of Avalon
Thanks, Sweety.
I use the good soil on the market -which for me is working wonderfully well- and they certainly are underpoted :)
I've also got flowering from plants that spent the winter outdoors (echinopsis polygona or multiplex, ferocactus glaucescens, aloe variegata, echeveria setosa and others... in spite of rainfalls, etc. (in fact, the aloes bloomed during thw winter and they looked spectacular.)
Also, I'm not sure if the extra watering they've got during april and may helped them flowering as we got non-stop rains for complete weeks when they were already outdoors - and when I say outdoors I mean REALLY outdoors, with no roof of any kind above them
Thank you so much Alex for your fantastic comment :-) thats absolutely brilliant that you have so many of your cacti all blooming lovely, and so happy to hear that you have such an amazing collection of so many beautiful plants :-) I bet your Aloes were incredible blooming over the Winter :-) you are so blessed living in Spain with those gorgeous warm temperatures and sunny skies but its amazing to think that you had weeks of non stop rain, I thought it was only here in Ireland that got the rain like that haha! all your plants are loving the care you are giving them and they all so happy to be blooming :-) thanks a million for watching Alex and sending you an abundance of love and heaps of happiness and happy growing from right across the Emerald Isle to Spain and have a WONDERFUL evening XXXXXX
It certainly is good for plants, especially for cacti and succulents... bt I'm not that fnd of warm weather. I'm happier wearing warm clothes and an umbrella :)
We've got a saying in Spain, "Cuando en marzo mayea, en mayo marcea": when in March you get the weather you should be getting in May, in May you'll get March's, and this is what happened: an amazingly hot and dry March and then lots and lots of rain in April/May. All my cacti and succulents were outside by the time and I just sheltered the very sensitive ones, the remaining getting all that rain and, believe me, it was a lot of it! . I'm thankful all of them seem healthy (fat and healthy!)
Alex Erz-Gehölz XXXXXX

John Knoefler - I've been using coco coir instead peat for some time with a great results .

Hi Karima :-D well done on rescuing your lady finger cactus from your Sister :-D well done on getting it to flower and it seems like you have done everything right and keep up what you are doing

lots of plant power to you, when is the best time to send the Christmas Cacti to sleep ready for Christmas time or there after? I have been looking at some 12volt reptilian air coolers, or could it go in the shed, but as it is plastic it has very limited natural day light, all my carnivorous plants get tucked up in the last week of November for there winter snooze.....just going to settle down to the rest of your videos......best wishes from London XXXX..

Beautiful...beautiful...beautiful. I have an Epiphyllum plant for not so long and some leaves get yellowish spots that are a little bit soft. I am so worried and don't want to loose it. Please...some advice to make the plant healthy again. Thank you in advance...I hope I can save it. 😕
Hi there :-) don't worry as Epiphyllums can be very prone to spotting and is often harmless but can also be down to a virus that may be more aesthetic than harmful but here is a link to a video I made on Epiphyllum plant virus and what it looks like :-) ua-cam.com/video/NZgyyVJs-mg/v-deo.html thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending tons of love and heaps of flower and cactus power from right across the Emerald Isle for a FAB and FUN Friday XXXX

I have a poorly cacti its about 20+ years old dont even know its botanical name!! - I have some photos of the poor thing is there a way i can send & get your advice - it belonged to my Mom who I lost just over a year ago after helping & caring for 9 years - we got on really well - I think I have watered it too much :(. I would also like to buy some more cacti can you recommend anyone I'm not sure if you sell them due to shipping difficulties- sorry for the long msg

I have a larger circular pot that I put multiple cactus in, is that a problem? I don’t like single small pots personally.

HI, your cactus are beautiful as well as your yard. I'm just curious, why don't you put your cactus in good clay pots ?

Hi, I've got a developing collection but I'm struggling to find new and interesting types of plants. Do you have any reccomendations?
Hi Alex :-D you could try cactusshop.co.uk or greengrowersglasgow.com they have a wonderful variety of many different cacti and succulents there :-D
Who is watching this in 2019? I take in as much as i can and revisit when challanged.
Hi Lyn what if we don't have winter? How can I promote blooming if I cant overwinter emm? Also any natural fertilizer for cactus like homemade ones?
It can be a little bit trickier for flowering if you get warm Winters, but if you can still keep the plants a little more on the dry side with watering, then the shorter days will still help to encourage blooming :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald isle for a fantastic Friday XXXXX

Hi Lyn, thanks for the important information you gave us! We have loads and loads of sun here in Malta so our cactus will surely be happy! Thanks again and keep safe!
Just one more question. What kind of soil is suitable for the Epiphyllum cactus?
You can use any well draining soil for epiphyllums and because they are not as rot prone as the Desert cacti, you don't need to worry about adding extra sand or loam and you can use any good quality houseplant compost and add a bit of extra perlite or grit for the extra drainage : -) XXXXX

on lighting, will grow lights work as well?
I managed to safely remove those dumb fake flowers hot glued to them without damage. good tips! I like that blackish purple aonium you have. do they flower? I can't find these things in my area.

Please tell me at what frequency should I fertilize the cacti? Once a month or twice a month?
Hi there :-D from Spring until late Summer you can fertilise every 2-3 weeks, but it can depend on the type of cacti that you have, as the epiphytic cacti like the Christmas cactus like to be fertilised in Winter too, here is a link to my website www.desertplantsofavalon.com for more info :-D and happy growing to you and have a wonderful weekend ahead XXXXX
