I'm pushing back on your push back on Halloween 2 (2009): in addition to being punk rock, Rob’s camera is a thing of beauty. Just watch that swooping tracking shot as Loomis and his assistant walk into his lecture through the lobby. And then we get his brutal shaky cams of poor Annie’s death and the Rob’s intimate and painful close-ups of Laurie cradling her dying body. Rob writes his own rules in Halloween 2 and tells a tale of brutal family reconciliation. But I still loves ya!

Genuinely freaked when you read & agreed with my opinion of Insidious over the conjuring.. I was instantly obsessed with the first Insidious and anxiously waiting for the series to continue.. With The Conjuring, I saw the first film twice when it came out, and honestly didn’t care much for it .. I only recently watched the second & third (still haven’t made it to the Annabelle films, and other spin-offs)
I just think that the insidious franchise is some of James Wan’s best in terms of plot and scare factor.. the conjuring never made me flinch while Insidious had me terrified that the red face demon was lurking in my bedroom corner for days

Wow what a great look! Like a new and improved version of 'Elvira: Mistress of the Dark' (I love that movie!). Also young lady, you've got great friggin' taste! I like how you speak your mind and you don't 'go with the flow'. If you don't like something, "bugger to that!" (British accent there). 'The Boy Behind the Door' OMG, that movie was 'BRUTAL!'. Maybe because it centers on two kids and you kinda feel more empathy for what happens to them and you want them to survive. It was really good. As for 'The Exorcist', I'd say it's a great movie (I'm of the older generation), but it doesn't come close (imho) to 'The Omen' in terms of the sheer terror you feel. Maybe it's something to do with the gruesome death scenes (hats off - no pun intended, to one of the best on-screen decapitations ever). Or it could be the fact that the Oscar winning score was so eerie and atmospheric, or that you actually get to see the very personification of the Devil's child on screen. Do you know any other movies where they show the death scene from different angles? I can only think of one at the moment, 'The Fury' from Brian De Palma with Cassavetes' death (very visceral!). You need to get a list together for the most brutal death scenes and I'd include 'Casino' which isn't a horror movie and 'Rise of the Footsoldier'.

HK has great kills, soundtrack, amazing flashback sequence, and atmosphere. But everything else was so loser. To use your own words, you can't say a movie isn't a masterpiece just because you didn't like it ;) You can't compare scientific facts like gravity (that's something absolutely real whether we as humans agree or not) to a movie's quality, and sadly, that's something humans do way too often. We don't like our own tastes challenged and not agreed by others, so we cling to words like "objectively" to try to pass our own judgement as fact. A couple of what I consider hot takes:
Halloween 1, 2, and H20 is the best trilogy this franchise will see. The weaknesses that are in the newer ones, as good as they are, aren't ever going to allow them to match up to the level of satisfaction we had seeing Laurie chopping Michael's head off at the end.
Friday the 13th would have been a forgotten slasher much like The Burning had they not chosen to do a sequel. It simply wasn't good enough to stand on its own.
Child's Play 3 is underrated and is a pretty solid sequel.
People tend to pigeon hole horror into a formula and that is why elevated horror is so polarizing.
The 2000s was not the weaker decade for horror. That belongs to the 90s. Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer came in to save the decade at the end, but before that the 90s were dry after Candyman. Even most of your high impact slasher baddies had mediocre if not terrible sequels and had it not been for Wes Craven, we wouldn't be where we are.

Overrated means “rated or valued too highly” so it depends on the actual quality of the movie. And that’s a fair point I agreed that I think Halloween as a movie is a little overrated. Nightmare 2 and 5 aren't bad and 3 is overrated (still a fav). Wes Craven was wrong about not wanting sequels. Freddy is least scary in New Nightmare. The best Friday the 13th movies are the ones everyone hates because they actually tried something different. Most of the Friday movies are boring. As much as Halloween did for slashers, it's boring as hell and that Shatner mask isn't scary. Chucky is actually scary. The fact that he is small makes him scarier because he's stealthy. I don't care for the new wave of supposed great horror. Most of them bore me. I don't think horror is scarier when you see less of the monster and hate when shit is too dark to see anything. Like I really wish they had some well lit scenes in rhe 1st Nightmare because the makeup is so good.

I absolutely hate the term 'elevated horror' because it implies that the genre is generally low brow (something the old white Hollywood elites running the oscars seem to agree on) and that them being highly artistic is a newer phenomenon.
Horror is and always has been the most artistically vast, creative, progressive and empathetic genre though.
Even in the very beginning Frankenstein was ahead of it's time and got a whole new dimension to it's themes through the man who played the 'monster'. Or the racial commentary in Night of the Living Dead. Pasolini's Salò is still one of the best and important anti-fascist movies ever made and has staggering amounts of detail in it's depiction and deconstruction of that cancer of an ideology.
And movies like Possession 1981 or Tetsuo The Iron Man would fit right in with A24's other horror stuff if they were made today.
Long rant but horror is the most important genre and I stand by that.

My unpopular opinions, come and roast me
I prefer Carrie 2013 over the original, it's one of my favourite books, I felt it did it more justice.
I enjoy RZ Halloween 2 (the theatrical cut anyway) it's a guilty pleasure. I like RZ as a director but can agree Halloween is out of his element.
Friday 13th Part 2 is my favourite Friday film, in fact I only rewatch the first 2 in the franchise.
Blair Witch 2: Book Of Shadows (despite the weird choices the studio forced in) is underrated and ahead of its time.
All 6 of the Milla Jovovich Resident Evil films are my ultimate guilty pleasure, I can't defend them they're just fun.
Saw 6 is my favourite Saw film, love the traps, the story and the callbacks to past films including the return of Shawnee Smith.

The phantasm franchise is my favorite, the tall man is the best horror villain.

For me Scream 4 is the worst Scream (but a good one. I think it's a pretty consistent franchise) because those merits you mention (How great is Jill and its brilliant social commentary) only exists in the climax of the movie.
BEFORE that, Jill was boring. All the new characters were totally forgetable (except Kirby), no intense chases, no clever kills. The pretitle sequence is so fun the first time you watch it, but that's it. The movie was about Jill, not Sidney. If Jill were Gale's cousin, the story would be the same.
The last 30% of Scream 4 is fantastic, the previous 70% is mediocre at best. That's why I see it as the weakest one. I think it has its fans because it was the first Scream for a new generation, that's it. And the best part is at the end, so it leaves you with a good taste.

I do agree it's not that exciting for a good portion but like you said it is a consistent franchise so it's not bad. I think that 3 is the worst just because of the voice changer having anyone's voice say anything

I think it's much better than Scream 4.
But yes, Scream 4 is good too. I love all of them.

If the Exorcist is overrated, then I don’t see how Hereditary cannot be overrated. They are around the same quality, with the slight edge to Hereditary. I love both of them. I’ve also heard that people laugh at both of them so they have that in common
Edit: also my point wasn’t that Scream doesn’t understand horror, but that it did not understand it as much as it think it does. They miss a couple of things, with the two movies don’t really understand like sequels in Scream 2, and *especially* Scream 3 which doesn’t understand how trilogies work at all. Also the “rules” of horror films aren’t really super accurate with the exception of Halloween. It definitely get the spirit and understanding of the fans right, but the tropes in slasher films aren’t so black and white.

You don’t need to write reason why I’m wrong, you are probably more knowledgeable than I am and I’m ill prepared for a debate. Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors I don't like it as much as most people, I hated Nancy getting killed off for no reason, and the whole thing with Freddy's mother and the holy water felt pointless because he comes back in a sequel.
I'm okay with the new Halloween movies doing away with the brother sister angle, because it always felt corny and if you go back and watch Halloween 2 it didn't even make sense in the context of that movie, the reveal just comes out of nowhere with zero build up, I also don't care for most of the sequels.

I’m not a fan of the Evil Dead movies besides Evil dead 2 dead by dawn I’d found the overall Subplots, Action , the effects to be very campy, dated, silly for its own good. Besides some folks hating on Hereditary which is on my top 50 horror films of all time, you felt the dramatic tension, the characters Annie, Peter, Charlie, Steve the overall experience while unlawful things was happening around them. so for folks calling it overrated they don’t care for Ari Aster filmmaking style. which is fine but it felt so enriching to me & love it. After watching A quiet place 2 id tend to agree on the rules of logic just falls out the window, while making some of the most dumb decisions possible. While I’d still found it entertaining and Cillian Murphy, Emily blunt gave solid performances. It doesn’t have the same impact as the first.
