How well I remember viewing the clouds (featured during the first minute or so in this video). Churning inky gray skies... the positive lightning strikes became constant right before touchdown. That's when we hit the basement. Unforgettable.
Indeed, many say I was too young to remember such a time. Yet, they did not see what I did that day upon the Texas Plains. Age 3, brief and only glimpsed yet never to be forgotten.
THIS GIVES ME CHILLS!!!! Was this the day about 7 tornados or so hit the town at once? I was in second grade. I and my family lived on Cinderella Street near the big water tower. Dad showed me a tornado (likely this one) from the front yard. He thought we'd better take shelter in his office down town., On the way there, a guy ran a red light and hit our truck. We had to run the rest of the way. I was absolutely terrified!!!
Rowdy Riemer My Father, a Physicist and Air Combat Meteorologist (SAC / TAC Vietnam) said he counted three full funnels before closing the storm cellar doors.
From what I remember, Gray County set a record that day... I think it was 6 inside city limits & 16 that actually touched down, and a total of 25 funnels in the air spotted. I vividly remember sitting out with my Grandma Laverne, on the back porch, watchin' the sky above us Slowly Churn (was like a witch stirrin' a cauldron!). And SOMEWHERE there's a VCR tape a friend of mine (from Yukon Oklahoma) owned, that shows Two seperate twisters come together! For reals, they both look like F-2s/F-3s, and when they got close enough together, they merged into One Massive Monster!! (I always joke and say Chicken Little was tellin' "The Truth" that day--because The Sky Fell!!!). I lived in Yukon through 5/3/99 & 5/20/03 as well. I know the '99 tornado was the fastest "on record", and I wasn't in the Texas panhandle in 1995, but I drove to Pampa & hwy 152 between Laketon & Wheeler had the blacktop ripped outta the ground, and it made my buddy's Emu farm (in Briscoe) "evaporate". They never even found a Feather, and several cows were impaled on trees...(he said they had a shish kabob party...😆). My instinct tells me that 2021 is going to be a great chasin' season! (Batten down the hatches!!) 💙💙💙🤘🏻 🙏🏻💙✌🏻
I was in high school when this twister hit. I love the old footage of tornadoes. I lived in N.C. back then, but I always remember the news reporting the tornadoes when the month of May was in. I had always wanted to see one, which now I have since I started storm chasing.
I was almost seven years old when this tornado hit my town. I remember my mom being at work, and having her boss come pick us up and bring us to his house. I was scared to death.
This event was a storm chaser's dream. A slow-moving, highly-visible supercell producing multiple large tornadoes. Jim, you are my hero! ;-)

I Was There!!

In fact, this was the day my love affair with Chicken Little began!!

I was a Pampa police officer out spotting on the North loop that day. Very scary day indeed!

WOW!!! Classic footage Jim!
A super 8 film of a tornado forming with sound. This is as good as storm chasing gets.
Wow good job to the person who videoed this! I lived out near price road when I saw it coming down. Awesome shit!
Great stuff there Jim! Indeed a true classic!

This is God's Work! It sounds like a freight train too!
Wow the First Generation 2001 Debuted in 1982
Actually I think it's a single tone Thunderbolt-1000 on a high voltage/speed tap, which is why it's so high pitched.
Probably a Federal Signal Thunderbeam
