Many people who worked at the printing plant I do business with lived in Lemont and told me how amazed they were to see a tornado in the first place but then see a second tornado spin out of it spinning in reverse. At one point, traveling next to route 83, the top of the funnel and bottom of the funnel visually were disconnected. The damage was incredible; I saw it a few days later and was appalled.
I was 11 years old, in a car with my Mom and Sister, heading southwest on I-55, straight into it. When we topped the hill just east of County Line Road, and got a good look at the sky, Mom jumped on the ramp heading north.
I remember that year, it was very hot and humid all over -- a very hot summer. Awesome footage from way back then. You really never see tornadoes that pull a u-turn, that was very odd.

Good thing because it crossed I-55 between Cass and Lemont Rd.

Unusual path for this powerful tornado, it was even stationary at times.
I saw this one form and coe down as we drove home from my grandfather's birthday party.
Great montage of early tornado footage.
Do you have footage of the Jordan, IA tornado from the same day as the Lemont tornado?
This would've been a catastrophe if it went into the heart of Chicago, which it very well could've.
I was there, in Crest Hill
Dang!
