  • Close range Super 8 footage I shot on the afternoon of May 19, 1982. This classic, white, high-contrast multi-vortex tornado was the second of two tornadoes that formed near Pampa, Texas.

For 1982, this was phenomenal footage.

Incredible. I remember spending nearly two hours in my parent's basement with the neighbors as these storms based overhead. It was quite an experience hearing the wind blow. Thanks for sharing these videos and helping me remember the day of this storm

UNBELIEVABLE!!! One of the all time CLASSIC tornado clips! The strong inflow winds, sharp peals of thunder and the anticyclonic satellite swirl are awesome too!!!

@cyclonejimcom I was there. I lived there at the time and that thing came down in that field behind our house. There were like over 12 tornado's spotted that evening and that was one of the most wicked looking storms I have ever witnessed in my lifetime.

This event was a storm chaser's dream. A slow-moving, highly-visible supercell producing multiple large tornadoes. Jim, you are my hero! ;-)

Footage at the same time of this somewhere on the other side of this tornado was in “Tornadoes: The Entity”. Particularly from 1:18 to 1:25 with that lightning strike shown.
Gotta love how well the Super 8 was also able to audio that strike too! As clear as it sounds, that’s a negative staccato!

Truly a gem, especially since I don't see a lot of Super 8 twisters. I am especially struck by how light in color it is.

I lived there when this storm came thru there. I was 11 years old and that was one wicked looking storm. If I remember correctly, that dropped down behind Price Road and lift up just as it was coming towards the city and dropped back down and hit a plant or something.

I believe it dropped back down right on top of the new john deere place.

I was 11 too and recall looking out my window to the West and seeing that thing out by Price Road. Seems like I saw at least 3 vortices. Then we went underneath the house.

Satellite vortices can definitely cause problems. I was almost hit by one on May 25 of this year while I was chasing near La Crosse, KS. The main tornado had just passed near town when a satellite vortex (later rated EF1, IIRC) spun up nearly half a mile from the main circulation and passed uncomfortably close behind me on the highway.
    Anyway, great video!

Looks eerily similar at the start to the 2013 El Reno tornado

Never seen that vid before. That was an amazing tornado. Good thing it looked to be outside of Pampa becasue that looks to be pretty strong.

Wow. So this was your footage? I've seen this shot in some documentaries, such as Tornadoes: The Entity. This film probably should have been included in the original Tornado Video Classics. It deserves a new remaster that bypasses the obvious VHS stage. ;p
