If you think this song sucks then you obviously don't get it and probably never will. I love some of the most extreme bands out there, with tip top musicianship. This band is a different type of musicianship. Composition and emotion on a raw level. Not raw like Burzum, but the expression of emotions on a sincere level.
I never liked Burzum or Mayhem or any of those "old school" black metal doom metal whatever metal bands, but I agree with your comment. Doesn't have to be "extreme" to be good.
@@tlibito I really like the Filosofem album of Burzum (not so much the rest btw). I didn't even know about the drama untill recently. Music is personal taste so you got a incorrect and narrow minded view on it. MY personal taste does prefer Swallow the Sun way more because of the deep emotional connection the band obviously pours in the songs (a lot of doom bands got that trait), but that doesn't mean someone else has to agree.
Anette sounds so beautiful here. I didn't even recognize her. She sounds like Liv Kristine! Plus, Imaginaerum is a masterpiece. And I am a fan since NW's earliest albums.
Definitely this is the genre for Anette's voice, she sounds really good the melody of the music combines really well with her tone, sounds really good!!
I just found the whole thing, never heard of this all. And I'm caught - in the heart breaking beautifulness of the voice of eternitity. The delicate dreamlike sensitivity - and powerless pain in the anger. Cannot stop listening, crying. RIP, You beautiful one
This is my first time actually hearing this band and his voice is soooo beautiful! As is the lady's...but when I heard those growls... I was so no expecting it xD but damn his growls are amazing!!!
The lady you're referring to is none other than Anette Olzon, former vocalist of Nightwish, which the drummer went on to join, and current vocalist of Alyson Avenue and The Dark Element.
Absolutely! I despised her in NW because her vocal style was not matching to the band. But I was impressed by her performance here. As you pointed, this style is much more suited to her.
I actually think she did an amazing work on the "Dark Passion Play". Although it was an album already composed before she joined the band. The older Nightwish stuff were not suiting her style though -nomatter how much she tried. She is real joy again in this song to listen!
Mikko has a stunning voice. I always tried to do that voice style change he does but fuck, my throat fails. All the band members deserve credit for this masterpiece
Maybe you are doing gutturals wrong (like using your actual vocal cord instead of a fake one). Indeed, he is awesome. I think you can train your growls if you put efforts into it.
@jussi __ that's what I'm saying. That's why they are called gutturals, they come from "guts". If you use your actual vocal cord instead of a fake one, plus wrong breathing, then you are definitely going to end up with damaged cords.
@jussi __ actually, Dio is an example of a belter. You can see it especially when he sings "Die Young" in Black Sabbath. To be he is at least in the top 5 of greatest metal signers

Gore singer. Most people call it harsh or heavy vocals. Growls, screams, yells, etc. It evokes a feeling and it's great to know the lyrics to the songs. Eventually you get an ear for it and can understand without lyrics.
It's not only about the song itself, which is great in a more obvious way. This video is outstanding. The faraway looks in the band members eyes, totally immersed in the song; the coreographers movements and facial expressions; the simple yet dense interpretation of the actor (and Aleah); the black colour massive presence... It's mesmerizing, what a great video.

I listened to this song for the first time recently after my grandmother died. I cried so hard, I went into spasms. These guys capture what loss and sorrow feels like through guitar riffs. New favorite band. Always been a pretty heavy music leaning guy however these guys bring the heavy without taking away from musicianship. I love Swallow the sun.
This video hits differently and has an entirely different meaning since Aleah passed away. This would have been made before or not long after she was diagnosed (or soon to be diagnosed) with cancer. She was just 39 years old when she passed away in 2016.
Kai Hahto on drums?!?! How has this astonishing band flown under my radar. I never thought I would find a band to stand beside the Holy Trinity (Wintersun, Opeth, and Strapping Young Lad). I am truly blown away! Just heard Lumina Aurea for the first time and it tore me to pieces. Don't know what it is about that song. I had chills and tears running down my face. Only other song that has done that to me is Lonliness (winter), but in such a different way. These guys are the real deal! What are they putting in the water in Finland?
EvilEmuEmpire I’m with you on that, and it seems growling could be more difficult, as it puts so much more strain on your vocals vs. just singing in the typical/conventional way.
Richteru - Seja um Lixo Dude, you either need to get a dictionary or learn how to read. My comment is not about defining words, it’s about admiring someone’s talents and vocals. A growl is a low guttural sound, “usually” monotonous, for a lack of a better term. Singing, in the most conventional/typical sense, is what you hear most of the times, from pop to rock, and even metal; there are actual notes, ranges, and pitches, the notes can go very high, or very low, there are melodies, etc.. Growling is mostly, if not, only reserved for metal genres. Mikko started out as a pure “growler”, and then started venturing out into unchartered territory, “singing”, watch some of his interviews, you might learn a thing or two about him, and about “singing.” The only concession I will give you here is that growling is a type of singing/vocals, but I would never describe any of his growls as “singing”, because I need to make a distinction where he growls and where he sings. It would be so absurd of me to one day say, wow Eminem “sang” on stage last night and killed it, just to give you an idea of the point I’m trying to make ☺️
For me this is the best band ever! They are masters in creating such a great atmosphere and I love the way they combine gloom, beauty and despair. This isn't just music, this speaks to your emotions...
"I wanted to find someone who can sing like an angel and I somehow heard Anette’s solo song called “Invincible” and I knew I need to ask from her if she wants to do the vocals on the Cathedral Walls song. She really liked the song and wanted to do it and she did amazing job with it." -Juha

When I first heard that Anette would be in this song, I thought: "Oh no...A pop song with Swallow The Sun? do not want!", but now that I've heard the song, I'm pleasantly surprised of how well she suit with these guys. It's a good song and it reminds me alot of good ol' Draconian.
Anette's voice sounds, as StS members said, angelical... almost the same angelical touch Liv Kristine had in ToT's beginnings, I like it I heard StS so long ago, but I didn't like them... however, I loved this song, and not just for Anette, the guy's normal voice is nice, and I like his growling part. The song has a nice melody, I think I'll give another try to this band, so much time I don't listen much doom... thanks for the song, feelings are flowing ;)
I honestly don't know how I hadn't heard of this song, even of this band before UA-cam recommended it to me on Sunday. You know when you hear even a sliver of music that hooks you in and you get goosebumps and your heart flutters, that happened with the opening bars, literally the first few seconds of melancholy sounding, hope tinged with despair guitars I've been fully hooked since. Mikko has an amazing voice so soft and beautiful one min then all growly and demony and back to soft again, good to hear Anette doing this style, her haunting voice goes perfectly with this and the music itself is perfection, I would love to hear this as an instrumental version I wonder how well it would work like that. Keep hitting replay. 🖤
Such a nice ballad. Silky smooth string arrangements, lush synth pads, haunting guitar arrpeggios, beautiful chorus melody. And then something happens at 3:40 that cannot be explained.
Very well filmed/edited, great visuals, and the song is so melancholic and beautiful. The concept behind this song makes you appreciate it even more. Congrats to STS for this great piece of work.

This band is a different type of musicianship. Composition and emotion on a raw level. Not raw like Burzum, but the expression of emotions on a sincere level.
Damn, you said it all, perfectly, thank you, i don't have shit to add to it, other than BUY THIS !!!!!
zosisrockmetalpanjol
Oh, I get it. And I'd love to "give it" to that beautiful chica too.
Anette sounds so beautiful here. I didn't even recognize her. She sounds like Liv Kristine! Plus, Imaginaerum is a masterpiece. And I am a fan since NW's earliest albums.
Yea its studio....annete always sound almost great....in studulio
@@pedjavukmirovic6770Take your hateful ass out of here. You’re everywhere bashing the woman. We don’t need that negativity.
This really captures finnish mentality, calm and furious at the sametime. Gotta love this
Definitely this is the genre for Anette's voice, she sounds really good the melody of the music combines really well with her tone, sounds really good!!
I just found the whole thing, never heard of this all. And I'm caught - in the heart breaking beautifulness of the voice of eternitity. The delicate dreamlike sensitivity - and powerless pain in the anger. Cannot stop listening, crying. RIP, You beautiful one
zosisrockmetal
its like the whole time you can feel the pent up anger and then it all gets released, and then goes back to normal.
Exactlyyy
This is my first time actually hearing this band and his voice is soooo beautiful! As is the lady's...but when I heard those growls... I was so no expecting it xD but damn his growls are amazing!!!
this used to be my track of choice for a long time, saw them open for kreator and accpet
And he's attractive! Hehe
Yep, that style of gutterals is pretty interesting. It's a nice, deep, wet sound.
Uor smile is so shining
The lady you're referring to is none other than Anette Olzon, former vocalist of Nightwish, which the drummer went on to join, and current vocalist of Alyson Avenue and The Dark Element.
Good God, what a roller-coaster. Pure art and totally an eargasmic masterpiece.
Couldn't have said it any better. Love this band.
The opening melody of this song is composed of magical beauty unparalleled in the history of Metal...
This song is absolutely frickin beautiful.
Such a beautiful and haunting song at the same time
This song is underappreciated. This album is underappreciated. This band is underappreciated. A+ material.
The dancers added a powerful, unexpected element to a video both bleak and gorgeous.
The vocals in this tune are like the tide that keeps rolling back and crashing in
These female vocals is so magically!!!
A voz da Annette me lembrou muito a Liv Kristine
Ela é incrível
Anette sounds like Liv Kristine here. I think her style is better suited for these softer, heavier genres. Rest Calm proved that.
Absolutely! I despised her in NW because her vocal style was not matching to the band. But I was impressed by her performance here. As you pointed, this style is much more suited to her.
I think so too. I didn't really like her vocals in Nightwish but she sounds great here.
I agree with you, but "Imaginaerum" on it's entirety is brilliantly sung by her.
Indie Side of Gaming Agreed. Imaginaerum is a masterpiece to me.
@jussi __ I'm from Russia originally. Are you from Finland? Your name is Finnish
One of the most beautiful songs I have ever had the pleasure of hearing.
Where do we go from here?
When these words have been unspoken.
We carry this burden through the gentle summer rain.
The convoy is still, still and weeping,
yet I don't feel anything, but these walls around.
"And the candles on cathedral walls
chase the weak light under the saints eyes,
over you, and your shattered words for the ones you lost.
In your mourning you're alone, so alone."
This silence speaks a million words,
words of comfort so shallow.
How I wish even for one tear,
but for my heart it is too late.
Where do I go when the sorrow turns to hate.
Where do I go from here?
The guardian angels quiet and near,
slowly turning away, for hell is surely here.
Every step towards the hole in the ground I rot,
carrying your white coffin, my heart wide shut.
I will follow you, earth to earth.
I will follow you, ashes to ashes.
I will follow you, dust to dust.
I will follow you!
How I wish even for one tear,
but for my heart it is too late,
when sorrow turns to hate.
"And the candles on cathedral walls
chase the weak light under the Saints eyes
over you, and your shattered words for the ones you lost.
In your mourning you're alone, so alone."

flies away - with coffin of course ;-)
because every gore singers are like yea everybody must understand what im singin even the not english speaking personssaaarr!
Gore singer. Most people call it harsh or heavy vocals. Growls, screams, yells, etc. It evokes a feeling and it's great to know the lyrics to the songs. Eventually you get an ear for it and can understand without lyrics.
@@justinbrewster2012 i will never understand growls without lyrics, but i absolutely love them.
Aleah R.I.P, angel.
+Natália Castro Awesome body!!!!
Gloomy Grim thank you!

Oh. I love this song, I love Swallow the Sun and I love Anette! But I wished Anette would sing a bit more in this, she matches this song so perfectly!
Plans for a second colloberation on the next album?! d:
In any case.. amazing job done here!
Тоска по тому, что было когда-то забыто... Молодцы! Блестяще!
Это плач по Алие Стедбридж. Царство ей небесное. Ушла в 39.
It's basically a long time ago synchronisation of sitting and standing up between a couple of friends.
En ole vielä hyväksynyt sitä,että elämä on kuolemista, vaikka kuinka menee päin helvettiä,ei vaan osaa. Maahisille kiitos mm. Te Swallow The Sun osaatte 😍
Kai is gettin it. Love his expressions while playing.
Swallow The Sun's music is by far the most beautiful in Metal nowadays. Can't wait for the whole album.
So much passion ...
I can’t stop listening to this song, so well put together and done well, being a keyboardist I feel every verse
STS has a way of sincere expression that is, quite frankly, a level above any other modern metal act that I am aware of.
Check out Insomnium. STS has actually worked with them and they're one of the best melo-death bands in my opinion. They're also Finnish!
Check out "Daylight Dies" as well. I recommend songs like "Dismantling Devotion", "A Life Less Lived" and "Solitary Refinement"
This song is awesome!! Not only can Mikko growl, he can definitely sing as well!! One of my favorite bands, thanks for posting!!
RavenPoe1849 yeah, it seems that most people can only do one or the other well, so props to him, I can’t do either :)
Dude, Growling is singing '-'
It would be so absurd of me to one day say, wow Eminem “sang” on stage last night and killed it, just to give you an idea of the point I’m trying to make ☺️
@@RavenPoe-bz7qx ok, mate. Sorry, I misunderstood your comment. Have a nice day!
For me this is the best band ever! They are masters in creating such a great atmosphere and I love the way they combine gloom, beauty and despair. This isn't just music, this speaks to your emotions...
The female vocals are by Anette Olzon. I couldn't believe it myself first for she indeed sounds like Liv Kristine here.
For me personally one the most emotional, beautiful, powerful and melodic metal songs. Thanks guys 👍🏻👍🏻
"I wanted to find someone who can sing like an angel and I somehow heard Anette’s solo song called “Invincible” and I knew I need to ask from her if she wants to do the vocals on the Cathedral Walls song. She really liked the song and wanted to do it and she did amazing job with it." -Juha
Highly unlikely since this was released two years before Invincible.
@@deutschesmaedchen The demo version of invincible was released far before the album.

That was massive and brilliant. Swallow The Sun and My Dying Bride both kick ass!
My beloved mother just passed away in coma 2 weeks ago..😢 her burial was indeed a perfect one like her time was also GOD's decision...well I dedicate this song for her each time I recall her smile as a blessings from above the sky...😔
I miss their old-style chord structures but this album is growing on me. This song is just wonderful.
Such an intense band, love and miss you guys!
Oh! "Swallowwers" you bring out the best of me! Being "highly-sensitive" no problem but contribute to live! Thanx! Thanx!
(working as an Artist now you inspire me endlessly!) Humanity will love you this! Yours completely, Romy (Germany).
When I first heard that Anette would be in this song, I thought: "Oh no...A pop song with Swallow The Sun? do not want!", but now that I've heard the song, I'm pleasantly surprised of how well she suit with these guys. It's a good song and it reminds me alot of good ol' Draconian.
thrifted a cute swallow the sun jacket now i gotta listen to their music!!! sounds amazing
whoah I never expected Annette's voice to sound almost like Liv Kristine's , she fits in for a doom metal band..🤩
Who is liv cristine?
@@pedjavukmirovic6770Omfg 😂 Get educated
JUHA RAIVIO! One of the best composers of this genre. Definitely 'reminds me of what could never be forgotten!". BROKEN MIRRORS!!!!!!!
Anette's voice sounds, as StS members said, angelical... almost the same angelical touch Liv Kristine had in ToT's beginnings, I like it
I heard StS so long ago, but I didn't like them... however, I loved this song, and not just for Anette, the guy's normal voice is nice, and I like his growling part. The song has a nice melody, I think I'll give another try to this band, so much time I don't listen much doom...
thanks for the song, feelings are flowing ;)
Wow... Mikko and Anette are amazing during the first half...
Then It's pure doomy, melodic bliss
Cannot wait for the new album
Aleah❤. R.I.P. 😢😢😢
This song is so haunting. I love it.
So much more than money can buy, a forever lost treasure. Simply, art fulfilling its purpose with a duo we can now only regret!
Emotional Song and Video, Amazing.... took my breath away... the breakdown is just ..... WOW.

wow, I love Annette´s voice :)

WOW such a surprising but beautiful combination! I'm really happy that STS and Anette got united with this song.

Brilliant song... Just saw them live today at Tivoli, Utrecht where they performed this one as well. Awesome gig.
Awesome band. Wish they would release a new album already!
So said she passed away so early. Love the combination of the two voices. I love to watch the video everytime I listen this song.
I was introduced to this band today by beautiful friend when I asked her whats her favorite band
Such a nice ballad. Silky smooth string arrangements, lush synth pads, haunting guitar arrpeggios, beautiful chorus melody. And then something happens at 3:40 that cannot be explained.
Beautiful Aleah... you're a missing supernova in the pale dark world.
Very well filmed/edited, great visuals, and the song is so melancholic and beautiful. The concept behind this song makes you appreciate it even more. Congrats to STS for this great piece of work.
I'm not really a fan of Annette's singing in Nightwish, but this is absolutely amazing. It changed my opinion on her singing.
I'm new to these guys... But I saw Kai playing drums and blown away by his versatility playing with Wintersun and then a band line this..
Epic Doom metal..
