The vast majority, if not all, of the 32 current team owners are older, white men. it's unlikely any of those white billionaire owners in their 60s, 70s, and 80s have much in common--culturally or politically--with young black men between the ages of 22 and 30. Yet over 70% of the league is comprised of young black men within this age range. So regardless if the owners actually like black people or not, they still give them contracts because they're consistently the best athletes available to help their football franchise be successul. And more success will ultimately lead to more revenue for the team owner! .

I think education should be only about thinking and problem solving, because if there is a fundamental problem within markets themselves, it won't do any good to just keep pushing kids inside them. The problem with most of our colleges and universities, it's about indoctrination, which is both useless in social / fiscal politics and also useless in the workforce, which is why economy is down and staying down, at least for the foreseeable future. Young adults are going into huge debt with an absolutely awful return (in general), on their college investments.
Mark West yeah, I'm not from the US, but I see that the student debt situation is very tough.. I think students need to look out for alternative paths, it their careers afford so. Anything can be learned independently and at no cost (except for internet), and many careers can be started independently also. Facing the real market early on also is a much more dense, organic and dynamic learning than spending years on just theory.

Democrats, sometimes called Dixiecrats, opposed emancipation, reconstruction, school desegregation, voting rights. LBJ did not want to sign the Civil Rights Act, Democrats filibustered it. The only reason the welfare state was created was to perpetuate Black dependence upon government, to which LBJ replied, "we'll have Blacks voting Democratic for 200 years". Unfortunately, it worked, only as far as the voting aspect. In all other regards, all devices the Left and Democrats have implemented have failed. Busing caused nearly every American city to go from majority White to majority Black. The welfare state destroyed the Black family unit and raised illegitimate birth rate from 22% to 76%. Low income housing in White neighborhoods raised crime rates, put people where they weren't welcome, and made both sides bitter. The fact that Republicans ended slavery does not mean what you think it does, because the party underwent ideological realignment started under Reconstruction. You can keep track of the moral arguments simply by looking at who advocates what policies, and it is precisely because the northern Democrats began championing more and more the white working class and the newly emancipated blacks (who were seen as having common interests together for a while) while the Republicans committed to industry and business (that's part of the reason they went to war against the South, remember), that categories got realigned. The federal income tax of 1913, the New Deal and its accompanying programs, were the proposals of the progressive wing of the Democratic party, even as Republicans and the Dixicrats (who soon became Republicans themselves) sought to water them down. By the time of the sixties, the progressive wing is increasingly championing movements unpopular in the south like the Civil Rights Movement, fighting off the erosion of unions, anti-war stances, and so forth. The same reasoning applies to LBJ, and the same for the neo-liberals in New York. They behave about 1/3 as bad as the Republicans but on crucial economic issues are just like them. So criticize them all you want. Same with Hillary and Bill. Whatever you fault them for is just a lighter version of what the Republicans gave themselves over to in the post sixties era, particularly with the Reaganite era. What is undeniable about everything is that Reaganite ideology has failed. The worship of the market, the decimation of public services, the massive tax cuts to the rich, lack of market oversight, the excesses of Wall Street, a shallow consumer culture and obsession with media spectacle, the demonization of the poor under the myth of the underclass - these were the seeds that now sprout in the economic and social chaos the nation faces. The degree to which the initiative failed is exactly a reflection of the ways in which the myths of poverty and invidious anti-communitarian attitudes lead to problems. Besides, the counter question for you is what would a Republican or libertarian have done? We know, in the form of Nixon and Reagan, and all those who followed him down to disastrous 2020. Johnson’s War on Poverty to some degree followed old tropes and was driven by a conservative growth agenda. It following the thinking of people like Pat Moynihan, focusing on macroeconomic growth agendas, job retraining, cultural tutelage, and punitive measures feeding into the carceral state (see Toure Reed’s 'Toward Freedom' pg. 32ff for more details). Johnson’s program also did not address the independently growing racial segregation or changing urban landscape. But on the other hand Medicare and Medicaid were boons to society and are regarded as indispensable staples. Head Start had a noticeable effect on young poor children while its adolescent equivalent Upward Bound did likewise. The Economic Opportunity Act did indeed lift millions out of poverty (which is actually a fluid notion that shifts through time) and established many programs we take for granted today. Through affirmative action and educational advancement opportunities, many African Americans ended up working in the quasi-public sector (private jobs but paid with public money), where their families remained somewhat protected when 2008 hit. But the drivers of the policies still remained bound to the standard assumptions about political economy and capitalism emergent since WWII. As Michael Katz notes in 'The Undeserving Poor’, the most crucially overlooked aspects of Johnson’s program as well as the far less effective neo-liberal and Reaganite methods of addressing the problem of poverty were political economy, resources, and power. It is clear that the decimation of workers unions (including now teachers, health care workers, lower ranking university staff, and many office workers) along with the massive shift in tax base from capital/corporations to labor has been the major correlates of an unhealthy and desperate society. That goes solidly with what Saez and Zucman argue in The Triumph of Injustice, with Katz in The Undeserving Poor, Adolph and Toure Reed, and it is solidly described in the Bible. You yourself have never made any substantive moral arguments of your own, apart from implicit half digested pop psychology and the disproven conclusions from 1960's conservatives. You are totally on the defensive. You poke here and there across the historical record, have never read Marx, and are making excuses for your own prejudices in demanding saints and perfection from a robust historical tradition as human as any other. It's just that every issue between whites and blacks is blown up by the media. An example of this is the recent case of a woman who wouldn't let a man whom she didn't know into a secured apartment building at night because he was trying to push past her and he refused to prove that he lived there. There was a keypad thing by the door that the woman was trying to get him to use to prove that he lived there. He instead pulled out his phone and started recording her and tried to act like he was some kind of victim because he was black and she was white. When he finally pushed past her, she (as an employee of the company that owned the upper class apartment building) followed him to make sure he wasn't up to no good. The whole time, she kept trying to get him to show her his key or at least tell her which room he was in, but he refused to do it. When he finally got to his room and unlocked the door, he tried to make her out to be the fool in the situation. He ended up getting his video on NBC news, she was publically shamed as a racist, and she lost her job with the realty company. All she was doing was her job. I would expect her to act the same way with any stranger who was trying to force his way into a secured building without any evidence of having the right to be there. It's a case of manufactured racism. It seems to me that the largest threat to a big, power-hungry government is a strong, united people. So then it's not surprising to me that the most leftist politicians who want big government are also the ones who stir up the hate pot all the time, especially around election time. As long as we're divided and fighting each other over a stupid thing like race, they can keep using the conflict to get more power for themselves.

I believe the past is important and is the way we can learn to do better. The past is the lantern to our feet and the light unto our path. And so is God’s word. I also believe in our great religious heritage. I agree in this discussion with Dr Sole that the modern welfare state nearly has recked this country. I believe in welfare reform. The Great Society was a failure. I am for full employment, tax reductions and deregulation of business. The country did not even have a permanent federal income tax until 1913. All modern nations of any civilized and humane nature provide things like health care, free public schooling, the right to unionize, social support, and correct for wealth inequality via progressive income taxes. Those countries have happier and more productive citizens. They are better educated. There is less poverty. They provide more public services, and their capitalist sector is still more efficient than ours per capital because ours has degenerated to the point of funneling much of the wealth to the ultra wealthy, not welfare queens or government offices. It is rather you with a skewed basis of comparison who thinks that government is bloated and wasteful. You lack a communitarian ethos that counter-balances your concern for yourself. This leads into all the rationalizations that Reagan made about society and which are disproved by many things, especially the positive counterexample of most other nations. The wasteful part is the military industrial complex (which is a socialist institution and sucks up most of the budget yet wastes much of it in catering to special interests and useless pork barrel spending), the corrupt ties between corporations and politicians that both disrupt the free market and essentially make a welfare state of the business elites. If you want to complain about the expansion of the executive branch you should complain about Trump, who has corrupted his office more than anyone in an effort to cater to corporate interests, ruling elites, and undemocratic interests. It seems like he disagrees with some, but furrows his brow and tries to express disagreement but openness at the same time. Impressive, facts are always brushed under the carpet when people don't want to hear them or they simply don't fit their agenda. We used to hear a lot of this in history class until it didn't work for particular political groups and their financial gains, something that motivates many individuals striving to get into politics rather than actually wanting to help the common man succeed. Politicians were originally not paid it was simply a chosen roll in an attempt to keep this country safe for all its citizens, fair and balanced for all to succeed in their chosen field of endeavor, they were volunteering their time and usually had other careers or lives. It need not be said that Sowell is a great speaker and particularly sharp in these interviews, but I particularly love this interviewer. He presents the flawed yet instinctual/intuitive counter arguements/questions on all our minds. In this way it gives the listener the proper mental re-wiring they need that comes when Sowell provides the appropriate response or explains how the inquiry or arguement itself is a fallacy. Indeed, when you think about this quote, it makes perfect sense. A great example of this concept can be applied to the NFL. The vast majority, if not all, of the 32 current team owners are older, white men. it's unlikely any of those white billionaire owners in their 60s, 70s, and 80s have much in common--culturally or politically--with young black men between the ages of 22 and 30. Yet over 70% of the league is comprised of young black men within this age range. So regardless if the owners actually like black people or not, they still give them contracts because they're consistently the best athletes available to help their football franchise be successul. And more success will ultimately lead to more revenue for the team owner! .

I highly recommend "Basic Economics" by Thomas Sowell, it's the book that introduced me to him. He is without doubt one of the greatest intellectuals in our nation; the fact that he is black is irrelevant, it's the fact that what he states, whether about race or economics, makes far more sense than what is said in the mainstream media today. A man that I'd vote for.

Bryan Cruz Exactly. Today, education is somewhere between indoctrination and mere preparation for markets and industries. I think education should be only about thinking and problem solving, because if there is a fundamental problem within markets themselves, it won't do any good to just keep pushing kids inside them. They should instead be able to rethink the markets and create new ones, think out of the box. Any smart person knows education is pretty fucked up and needs complete replacement. It is already happening actually.

The problem with most of our colleges and universities, it's about indoctrination, which is both useless in social / fiscal politics and also useless in the workforce, which is why economy is down and staying down, at least for the foreseeable future. Young adults are going into huge debt with an absolutely awful return (in general), on their college investments.
Mark West yeah, I'm not from the US, but I see that the student debt situation is very tough.. I think students need to look out for alternative paths, it their careers afford so. Anything can be learned independently and at no cost (except for internet), and many careers can be started independently also. Facing the real market early on also is a much more dense, organic and dynamic learning than spending years on just theory.

Democrats, sometimes called Dixiecrats, opposed emancipation, reconstruction, school desegregation, voting rights. LBJ did not want to sign the Civil Rights Act, Democrats filibustered it. The only reason the welfare state was created was to perpetuate Black dependence upon government, to which LBJ replied, "we'll have Blacks voting Democratic for 200 years". Unfortunately, it worked, only as far as the voting aspect. In all other regards, all devices the Left and Democrats have implemented have failed. Busing caused nearly every American city to go from majority White to majority Black. The welfare state destroyed the Black family unit and raised illegitimate birth rate from 22% to 76%. Affirmative Action put people into positions or colleges for which they were not qualified, instilled the victim mentality, and discriminated against Whites. Ebonics focused on improper English. Low income housing in White neighborhoods raised crime rates, put people where they weren't welcome, and made both sides bitter. The fact that Republicans ended slavery does not mean what you think it does, because the party underwent ideological realignment started under Reconstruction. You can keep track of the moral arguments simply by looking at who advocates what policies, and it is precisely because the northern Democrats began championing more and more the white working class and the newly emancipated blacks (who were seen as having common interests together for a while) while the Republicans committed to industry and business (that's part of the reason they went to war against the South, remember), that categories got realigned. The federal income tax of 1913, the New Deal and its accompanying programs, were the proposals of the progressive wing of the Democratic party, even as Republicans and the Dixicrats (who soon became Republicans themselves) sought to water them down. By the time of the sixties, the progressive wing is increasingly championing movements unpopular in the south like the Civil Rights Movement, fighting off the erosion of unions, anti-war stances, and so forth. The same reasoning applies to LBJ, and the same for the neo-liberals in New York. They behave about 1/3 as bad as the Republicans but on crucial economic issues are just like them. So criticize them all you want. Same with Hillary and Bill. Whatever you fault them for is just a lighter version of what the Republicans gave themselves over to in the post sixties era, particularly with the Reaganite era.
What is undeniable about everything is that Reaganite ideology has failed. The worship of the market, the decimation of public services, the massive tax cuts to the rich, lack of market oversight, the excesses of Wall Street, a shallow consumer culture and obsession with media spectacle, the demonization of the poor under the myth of the underclass - these were the seeds that now sprout in the economic and social chaos the nation faces. Narcissistic individualism. A governing elite in the hands of corporate elites and neo-liberal ideologues. A fascist Republican party that has no moral center left or any meaningful governing philosophy save to insist on authoritarianism (neo-liberal Democrats are only slightly better, by the way). So whatever charges you want to make about politicians, to the degree that they are even correct, are of little concern to me. They really are an indictment of Sowell's philosophy and the empty reactionary posture you have adopted. You have no positive vision. You are taking potshots at people (often erroneously) uncharitably and simply stewing in your own individual concerns. That idea, stemming from the radical vision of the historical Jesus of Nazareth, a community based on radical equality, inclusivity, and compassion, is far more a part of the progressive left these days than anywhere else. AOC has more integrity by far than Yoho and the incumbent Republicans quickly gave up their criticisms of a 2016 Trump to bow down in bitchhood to their new overlord, as evidenced by the impeachment ('He'll learn his lesson!') and the paralyzed response during COVID and the democratic protests. There is no good indication the new batch of conservatives will differ much from the last. But let me leave you with a response to your claims about LBJ and the effects of the Great Society. You cite no sources, and do not ground your argument in explicit moral positions:

Johnson’s War on Poverty to some degree followed old tropes and was driven by a conservative growth agenda. It following the thinking of people like Pat Moynihan, focusing on macroeconomic growth agendas, job retraining, cultural tutelage, and punitive measures feeding into the carceral state (see Toure Reed’s 'Toward Freedom' pg. 32ff for more details). Johnson’s program also did not address the independently growing racial segregation or changing urban landscape. But on the other hand Medicare and Medicaid were boons to society and are regarded as indispensable staples. Head Start had a noticeable effect on young poor children while its adolescent equivalent Upward Bound did likewise. The Economic Opportunity Act did indeed lift millions out of poverty (which is actually a fluid notion that shifts through time) and established many programs we take for granted today. Through affirmative action and educational advancement opportunities, many African Americans ended up working in the quasi-public sector (private jobs but paid with public money), where their families remained somewhat protected when 2008 hit. But the drivers of the policies still remained bound to the standard assumptions about political economy and capitalism emergent since WWII. As Michael Katz notes in 'The Undeserving Poor’, the most crucially overlooked aspects of Johnson’s program as well as the far less effective neo-liberal and Reaganite methods of addressing the problem of poverty were political economy, resources, and power.
It is clear that the decimation of workers unions (including now teachers, health care workers, lower ranking university staff, and many office workers) along with the massive shift in tax base from capital/corporations to labor has been the major correlates of an unhealthy and desperate society. That goes solidly with what Saez and Zucman argue in The Triumph of Injustice, with Katz in The Undeserving Poor, Adolph and Toure Reed, and it is solidly described in the Bible. You yourself have never made any substantive moral arguments of your own, apart from implicit half digested pop psychology and the disproven conclusions from 1960's conservatives. You are totally on the defensive. You poke here and there across the historical record, have never read Marx, and are making excuses for your own prejudices in demanding saints and perfection from a robust historical tradition as human as any other. You fall into the very trap of race essentialism Sowell warned about. You are, in other words, in need of some Socratic self-examination. You might check out the gospels, or what Cornel West and Adolph Reed have to say on UA-cam about the purpose of education and the current state of our society. @spot light Well, I don't know. For one thing, the white racism against African Americans is a lot less than you might think. It's just that every issue between whites and blacks is blown up by the media. An example of this is the recent case of a woman who wouldn't let a man whom she didn't know into a secured apartment building at night because he was trying to push past her and he refused to prove that he lived there. There was a keypad thing by the door that the woman was trying to get him to use to prove that he lived there. He instead pulled out his phone and started recording her and tried to act like he was some kind of victim because he was black and she was white. When he finally pushed past her, she (as an employee of the company that owned the upper class apartment building) followed him to make sure he wasn't up to no good. The whole time, she kept trying to get him to show her his key or at least tell her which room he was in, but he refused to do it. When he finally got to his room and unlocked the door, he tried to make her out to be the fool in the situation. He ended up getting his video on NBC news, she was publically shamed as a racist, and she lost her job with the realty company. All she was doing was her job. I would expect her to act the same way with any stranger who was trying to force his way into a secured building without any evidence of having the right to be there. It's a case of manufactured racism.
It seems to me that the largest threat to a big, power-hungry government is a strong, united people. So then it's not surprising to me that the most leftist politicians who want big government are also the ones who stir up the hate pot all the time, especially around election time. As long as we're divided and fighting each other over a stupid thing like race, they can keep using the conflict to get more power for themselves.

The latter vision sees the present as more important than the past and we make a new start forgetting the past and making a new future. The former vision says the past is our best guide to the future. Both visions were held by various philosophers of the 17th and 18th and 19th centuries. In the constrained vision we are constrained to view the past as important. In the unconstrained vision we are more free to act accordingly to the dictates of our own time. Both viewpoints are valid it’s just whichever vision one beholds that is how the person thinks and acts in their perception of reality.I concluded that I am a constrained visionary. I believe the past is important and is the way we can learn to do better. The past is the lantern to our feet and the light unto our path. And so is God’s word. I also believe in our great religious heritage. I agree in this discussion with Dr Sole that the modern welfare state nearly has recked this country. I believe in welfare reform. The Great Society was a failure. I am for full employment, tax reductions and deregulation of business. Constantly excelerating economic progress is not an end in itself but a means to liberate the capacities of every human being to pursue his talents and hopes! Your claim about the size of government is a judgement particular to your individualist perspective and ignores historical reality. America is a young nation, which for the first century and a half was essentially a frontier state that faced no major outside threats (having massacred all the native inhabitants), although the Civil War did encourage the Union to expand its branches and pass a temporary income tax to fund the war effort. The country did not even have a permanent federal income tax until 1913. All modern nations of any civilized and humane nature provide things like health care, free public schooling, the right to unionize, social support, and correct for wealth inequality via progressive income taxes. Those countries have happier and more productive citizens. They are better educated. There is less poverty. They provide more public services, and their capitalist sector is still more efficient than ours per capital because ours has degenerated to the point of funneling much of the wealth to the ultra wealthy, not welfare queens or government offices.
It is rather you with a skewed basis of comparison who thinks that government is bloated and wasteful. You lack a communitarian ethos that counter-balances your concern for yourself. This leads into all the rationalizations that Reagan made about society and which are disproved by many things, especially the positive counterexample of most other nations. The wasteful part is the military industrial complex (which is a socialist institution and sucks up most of the budget yet wastes much of it in catering to special interests and useless pork barrel spending), the corrupt ties between corporations and politicians that both disrupt the free market and essentially make a welfare state of the business elites. If you want to complain about the expansion of the executive branch you should complain about Trump, who has corrupted his office more than anyone in an effort to cater to corporate interests, ruling elites, and undemocratic interests.

It seems like he disagrees with some, but furrows his brow and tries to express disagreement but openness at the same time. Impressive, facts are always brushed under the carpet when people don't want to hear them or they simply don't fit their agenda.
We used to hear a lot of this in history class until it didn't work for particular political groups and their financial gains, something that motivates many individuals striving to get into politics rather than actually wanting to help the common man succeed.
Politicians were originally not paid it was simply a chosen roll in an attempt to keep this country safe for all its citizens, fair and balanced for all to succeed in their chosen field of endeavor, they were volunteering their time and usually had other careers or lives.

Dr. Sowell had been a major influence in my life and I have learned a lot from him. It's just very sad that brilliant minds like his that do not see any skin color are becoming extinct.
It need not be said that Sowell is a great speaker and particularly sharp in these interviews, but I particularly love this interviewer. He presents the flawed yet instinctual/intuitive counter arguements/questions on all our minds. In this way it gives the listener the proper mental re-wiring they need that comes when Sowell provides the appropriate response or explains how the inquiry or arguement itself is a fallacy. Added bonus, it is all done in plain and simple english, the sign of a true intellectual who has a good grasp on and know what they are talking about... won't get that from verbal acrobats such as Noam Chomsky.
