- In this classic Free To Choose Network footage (1978), Milton Friedman takes three questions from an audience member and crushes them all.
The real problem is, that as we move from the local community to the state, from the state to the Federal government, it becomes increasingly difficult for us to control the mechanism we have established and that mechanism tends to control us. That was the great wisdom of the founding fathers of this country, of the people who wrote the Constitution. That constitution was designed to limit government’s powers in order to preserve the freedom of the individual, and what has happened in the past fifty years is that the fundamental character of the Constitution has really been changed. We have broadened enormously the conception of what is a governmental power and what is not, and have departed from that limited government until we have created a Frankenstein, an unlimited government that threatens to destroy us.

I think it's an indicator of his remarkable intellect that he can remember all three of the man's questions, almost word for word, after having spoken for almost five minutes in response to the first one.

Knuckle_Bump Don't worry about Sanders. In the unlikely event he even gets the nomination(which is doubtful), he'll crumple in a debate against any conservative candidate. He couldn't handle BLM protesters at his own rally, or Chris Mathews questioning him about his policy that Mathews even supports.

The troublesome thing is that 30 or so years after Friedman and Thomas Sowell's peak, our government has grown ever more controlling.
Friedman actually did not "crush" the questions; he expanded on them very reasonably to crush the premises upon which the questions were based.

I was in college in the mid-80's, and that was indeed part of the curriculum when I was there studying business management. We were required to go on our own time - individually - and watch his series of films in the library. I really used to look forward to it.

If we had only listened to him and heeded what was being said but we became complacent. Our school systems, media became invaded and controlled by the non producers. Our government is a unchecked beast right now as i sit here - 2021, Day 11. What a shame.

This man had such an incredible grasp of the concepts that affect society... and he was also genius enough to simplify them so that healthy principles could be understood and fostered in all who heard him. Milton Friedman was sincere, truthful and genuinely wanted to see the betterment of society as a whole--the mark of a truly great economist.

Milton Friedman was a remarkable man with a remarkable intellect and remarkable memory. I doubt my ability to remember each of the three questions! I'm sharing his videos with my 20 year old son, in the hopes of educating him on the basic principles of economics, and the tremendous importance and advantages of a free economic system!

Instead.....50% of us don't do anything, don't pay taxes, and ultimately have to depend on the 50% that do produce something. Eventually, more people will be in the cart, then pulling the cart.

Almost as imposing as is his intellect is how gracious and winsome he is with his questioners. Look at any debate or Q&A in which he participated, and you will see the same kindness. I think his character had much to do with helping people receive his arguments. "The tongue of the wise makes knowledge acceptable" (Proverbs 15:2)

I remember when Milton Friedman came to my university in the late 1970s. Although a lot of the students didn't like him (though to be fair they really didn't understand or even know his work), they were all polite to him. Imagine if Milton Friedman were to try to speak today at Berkeley or other schools where they have threatened Ben Shapiro and attacked speakers?! The modern Storm Troopers of the far Left make their requirements known quickly and violently.

Obviously his warning was not heeded. Government has grown by leaps and bounds since 1978.
nice interview, things really changed for friedman 18 years earlier, after meeting with ronald coase. by then friedman was already working with systems control, but when he saw coase's equations and recognized their potential for establishing new financial and insurance products, he wrote them into chicago-school law. thus making milton the fed's economic echo for the next 40 years, and giving policy makers & financiers a green light to produce the extraordinary levels of wealth condensation & evaporation we see today.
Friedman was a real economist who dedicated his life to it and had a complete and total understanding of it. I wish that people like Bernie Sanders and his followers would open an economics book of proven economic principles, even just one. If they had the intellect to absorb what they were reading, and I believe that most would, it would completely change their beliefs. As an economics instructor, it is sad to see the widespread ignorance in these areas of study. Unfortunately, the lack of this knowledge will ultimately have very costly consequences.

+Peter Caires "Basic Economics" by Thomas Sowell was written for the lay person. Best book on the topic that I have ever read. However, I never read any of Milton Friedman's work and based on these youtube videos, I imagine that his books would be just as enlightening.

Milton Friedman is someone every American needs to listen to and learn from. I have listened to people in their 40s 50s 60s 70s and 80s talk about government as a thing that thinks independent of the people that are in government my entire life. The people in those age groups are the people teaching the youth today their failed understanding. Its also those age groups that hold the majority of the countries wealth. Those groups are the most thick headed and without them admitting they are wrong on what they think they know and learning what is correct this country will continue to be a sinking ship.
Its god damned embarrassing how many people are working successful jobs and have met their goals in their lifetime and are still children throwing temper tantrums when someone proves them wrong. When its shown they are the ones who let this country go to shit through their collective mismanagement by following the incorrect principles to long term success. Their lack of care and selfishness has condemned their children to lifetimes of debt and poverty.

Friedman was a gift from God to help people realize that economic freedom is essential to personal freedom and prosperity.

Did you ever notice that Nazi means National SOCIALIST, and the Democratic Party is essentially socialist? Socialism is contrary to liberty and has failed everywhere from Russia to China to Cuba. Friedman preaches liberty, which is the path to self-reliance, dignity and prosperity. This is the path that God wants for us, and that is why Friedman is a gift from God. Just ask yourself: are Americans freer since Obama took office?
You have no idea what you're talking about. Give me an example of how the world is freer now that Obama is president. Also, a state is not a republic just because it includes "republic" in its official name. People in China and North Korea do not vote for their leaders. There's nothing republican about that. Russia, China, Iran and North Korea are some of the most oppressive states in the world.

Even as a left leaning Economics student in the early 1980s I had to respect the intellect, knowledge and simplicity of communication of Milton Friedman. I am a lot more experienced and wiser now and Friedman’s message is more pertinent than ever.
The guys smart but being smart and being right arent mutually inclusive. The guy was so hopped up on his own fumes that he couldnt engage fully in criticisms of his theories. From him and the Chicago boys we get the disaster that is the Pinochet government in Chile, and the multitude of his policy preferences never actualized in the US. On the whole his report card isnt great.

1978 standard of living was peaking. Today look around and ask, should we follow Milton's advise?
Milton Friedman is a very smart man who has spent time learning the real system that we live in - which is extremely complicated. Therefore, he has the ability to to simplify it for the common man. If you read most blogs about socialism and capitalism, you get the sense very quickly the average person does not really understand the big picture - the moving, dynamic system, of collective behavior.
Central controls develop incrementally over time by perceived needs - one at a time. For example, a police department, taxation, system of laws, etc. The more people cooperate naturally and have good behavior because they are driven by an inner ethic system, and have intelligence, the less need their is for new laws and people to enforce the laws. Smart, ethical people put their seat belt on by themselves without the need of a law because they understand how health insurance works, and that when they are harmed it costs everyone. They also would not drive at unsafe speeds or while drunk. However, if you look around there are quite a few ignorant and unethical people that we have to live with - unfortunately. Many of the laws we have are just for "these" people but we all have to follow them.

Today we're on the USS Titanic. Government at all levels is sinking us. 40 years ago I was a low level manager in state government. I was ordered to spend money for things we didn't need because if we didn't we would lose the funding for the next year. It's only worse now.
What kind of things? Just curious.
An all-too-common story. I had it from a family friend in the school system. "We have all new stuff! Can you use the money in another department?" "Spend it, or they'll cut the budget next year."
Same with the military. Use all 20,000 rounds for the company so we don’t send any back, if not we’re going to be short ammo next year and no retakes for qualifying.
Yes, and people like Obama are telling us, "Hey, look at all this water!" "Lets blow a hole in the bottom of the boat, so all the water will run OUT!"

Brilliant. Our nation needs many more men like Mr. Friedman if it's going to survive.
It costs an average of $20G/taxpayer funds to teach a child in public school in my state, 2020. The education is nothing compared to what I can buy for $1600 for an online school. Now we are forced to do online public schooling, which our public schools are NOT designed for, and severely relying on parents to pay for the deficit through childcare, printing costs, electric costs. Yet we have no choice in where the $20G gets spent on our child’s education and must pay more money for a school that better serves her.
Public schools should be a right not forced on people to utilize, taxpayer funds should stay with the child, not with the public school. The tax payment also should not strangle senior citizens who are stuck paying large sums of property tax to ensure $20G per student school funds, when a great education costs only $1600 per year in my experience.
