Thank you one and all for uploading anything(!) regarding Mr.Hitchens, he is a breath of fresh air. As an atheist living in Ireland(a country raped by religion and it's figureheads/class system/close minded-ness) I love to listen to anybody with an opinion that hasn't been spoon-fed to them through priests/rabbis/reverends/whoever
(PART 1)adknerr. You spoke some wise words right there. It all makes sense! Nice job I'm not sure where you are from but it is nice to know there are people who care about us. I say us because i was born in Africa, Zimbabwe to be exact.
Which makes you feel better? 1) Returning a purse you find containing $100 to an old lady because God wants you to do it? 2) Returning the purse because you feel bad for the old lady's loss and you want to make her feel better and not go hungry?
Thanks for the heads-up. I met some of that type myself when I served in the military. I will visit his home page and see his uploads. I begin to tire of his high school debating tactics (and lack thereof). Thanks again.
Hitchens and Dawkins together as a team would make formidable debate team. Hitchen's for his excellent moral expose of Christian theology, and Dawkins for his scientific and factual arguments.
I'm an atheist, many years ago I drove cabs for a living, even though driving a cab is piss poor wages it's common for cab drivers to return wallets and purses as I did on a couple of occasions. The company policy was to return peoples possesions and charge them by metering the trip. I never had to mention the charge since like Mr Hitchens the people who I returned it to enthusiastically shoved money into my pocket, even when there was nothing more than credit cards in the purse.
haha good work. watched this whole debate way back and remember thinking how Hitchens performs far better against worthy adversaries (Olasky is to his credit an accomplished and intelligent man) because he does not resort into name calling and pithy one liners, this is surely one of his most supreme performances and back in 2007 he seemed healthier. Just hope his chemo does the trick.
Actually, my lack of faith opens up a world of fascination to me. I find the universe and its grand immensity and complexity incredibly fascinating and I don't need to arbitrarily inject an invisible supernatural force into the equation. I look at the pores on the skin on my son's face and marvel at just how fortunate I am to be experiencing life at all, much less as a high form of intelligent life. And I have a great deal of practical hope in humanity that we'll survive into the far future.
yeah he was way out of his element, and it didn't help that Hitch happened to have one of his best nights that night - probably the most impressive filmed debate I've seen of him since the new book.
One of my favourite things to do when a theist proclaims that our morality (etc) comes form god or the bible is to ask them where the bible for lions, gorillas and penguins come from since they live in social groups. Its quite fun watching them try to justify it.
Actually in world war 2 Germany went to war initially with small european countries. it broke out into a large scale war once France and Britain became involved, the US didn't become involved until later, when Japan forced them into the conflict. The point I was making, that you completely missed (or ignored), was that Germany never persued war against the US.
Notice how no country which is over 40% Catholic has a high HIV rate with the exception of Lesotho, a tiny country which is completely land-locked by Protestant/pagan South Africa. The prevalance of HIV in a nation is determined more by geography than religious demographics. Southern and south-east Africa has far higher infection rates than the rest of the continent, including numerous highly Catholic countries in central Africa.
If the hypothesis that Catholic doctrine spreads HIV and AIDS, we would expect to see increased infection rates in countries that contain more Catholics. Instead, we find decreased HIV rates in Catholic-dominated countries (although the trend is not statistically significant). The idea that Catholic teaching encourages the spread of HIV is not confirmed by the demographics.
Of all the anti-religion videos I've seen on UA-cam from Hitchens, Harris, Dawkins et al, this has to be the most devastating and powerful one yet. Hitchens at his eloquent and logical best.
Can I just point out also that its unlikely that Kim Jong sees religion as a danger since he's established both himself and his father as religious figures who the people have to worship, not choose to, have to.
"By telling someone they are just an animal, do not be surprised when they act like animals." They act like animals even if you tell them they were made in god's image... "Atheism breeds intolerance and hatred by devaluing humans." Wrong. This is the one life you will get, trillions of other people could have been alive in your place, but it was you who were lucky. Your life is precious and valuable.
Can I just point out that in this quote he never says anything about being anti-religion or atheist or anti-theist, he only talks about christianity (christ followers), which is not the only religion. Adolf once more - "Why didnt we have the religion of the Japanese, who regard sacrifice for the Fatherland as the highest good?" If he did change his beliefs, that's nothing unusual, most people change their beliefs during their lifetimes.
In religion and politics people's beliefs and convictions are in almost every case gotten at second-hand, and without examination, from authorities who have not themselves examined the questions at issue but have taken them at second-hand from other non-examiners, whose opinions about them were not worth a brass farthing. - Autobiography of Mark Twain
Actually up until the British destruction of the French fleet (to prevent it from falling into the Nazis hands) the US had been seeking peace terms with Germany, when that happened Roosevelt finally began giving Britain the aid it needed. Roosevelt didn't want to get involved in an unwinnable situation so wanted tos ee proof that Britain was commited to the conflict with the Nazis before extending any aid, and in case Britain fell he wanted to be on, at least, amiable terms with Germany.
@moonlightbateman You probably also think sucking the air out of something as "filling it with vacuum" and and the empty sheet of paper is "a sheet full of emptiness".
"Do not utter lies about what your own tongues say is permissible or forbidden, and thus invent lies about [what] God [has or has not said]. Surely, those who invent lies about God will not succeed." Qur'an, 16.116 Skurkc - pwned.
I always had the impression that Hitchens was a bit baser and rude than Dawkins or Harris, but after watching that I am thoroughly impressed. I might buy his book sometime... ;)

Just a quick fyi, Hitler was a Roman Catholic, Stalin believed in a creator (he only opposed religion because he wanted power for himself) and Mao was a Taoist, a quick google search would have informed you of all this.
It's about time the creationists realized that of all the 'evidence' they like to wheel out, the Old Testament is the most rickety of all. There must be a war crime referenced on every other page.
I'm absolutely on your side about promoting and distributing contraception, I'm not sure if using the 'babies born with HIV' is a good argument for why it should be used. In developed countries with proper medical practices and facilities the transfer rate of HIV from the mother to child is like 1 in 50 versus 1 in 3 just from childbirth. After that, breastfeeding also then infects even more. I'm guessing fixing this discrepancy is better and less contraversial... but obviously more expensive
Personally I wouldn't call a threat like eternal torture agreeing to disagree, 'come over to my side or be tortured forevermore' goes a lot further than disagreeing. Though I will say that you're only the second theist I've spoken to on UA-cam who hasn't resorted to that after only a few comments, so kudos on that.
Thats a common tactic by the religious; taking their misunderstanding of the natural world and proposing supernatural agency when one isnt needed. And all animals possess emotional intelligence. Its advantageous in the evolutionary process. Theres been many instances where animals have been observed exhibiting altruistic behavior. It isnt exclusive in humans. Religion seeks to grant humans a larger role in the Universe than we have to make believers feel special, which is the ultimate goal.
Human civilization has been around at least five-thousand years. Private property is at least that old. It is likely much older as humans have wandered the globe much long (perhaps 200 thousand years). We have discovered stone age graves where individuals are buried with their private possessions. Even the Neanderthal did this. They too had private property. Note that this is before 2000 BC.
I'm curious to know where you're going with this. Btw, the particles name is Higgs boson, not Higgs boson God particle. God particle is the nickname that the media has christened it with (since they needed something snappy and attention grabbing), not something that the scientists named it.
Also, those killed were murdered for political reasons Communist states believed that history was determinist in nature. The rulers of Communist states believed, just as many Christians, Jews, and Muslims do today, that they were working for an end and that end justified the means.

Ok, it's all completely clear now. Thanks for the uploads, always nice to see Hitchens in action :-)
This is truly the best video. Thankyou for taking care to point it out, I've put it on my channel too. Hitchens sums it up perfectly. EXCELLENT!
Thanks for posting these videos.

Good job. Well executed.
Wow! I don't know who Hitchens is but the accent makes this already piercing and articulate dialog dead sexy.

I never said they were particularly religious, I simply stated that Kim Jong II has made religious figures out of both himself and his father.

I've heard the entire thing. Olasky doesn't utter a single compelling argument.
The ten countries in continental Africa with the highest percentage of Catholics are:
1) Equitorial Guinea (93.52% Catholic / HIV rate 3.4%)
2) Burundi (65.25% Catholic / HIV rate 2.0%)
3) Lesotho (53.62% RC/ 23.2% HIV)

5) Angola (50.04% RC / 2.1% HIV)
6) Democratic Rep. of Congo (49.45% RC / 1.2-1.5% HIV)
7) Rwanda (47.92% RC / 2.8% HIV)
8) Gabon (46.42% RC / 5.9% HIV)
