    Before buying a freeze dryer, perhaps research to find out more about the downside of the machine; some people have problems with their machine and it's big and heavy and hard to return!
    When trying to decide what to freeze dry you can start by asking why.
    Start by asking yourself this question. Why are you freeze drying food? Knowing this should help you decide what you should freeze dry first.
    I'm freeze drying because:
    Just to freeze dry leftovers?
    You want to make your own food for camping/backpacking?
    For if/when the SHTF?
    For a short term emergency?
    You have your own garden and want to freeze dry the food?
    You love Costco but don't have a family of 6?
    You are good at finding the food sales but only have 1 freezer?
    When you cook homemade chili just for yourself you make 10 gallons? Because you have 3 full freezers and are worried about power outages?
    If I knew then what I know now, I would have freeze dried things in a different order. Or maybe not, because I started freeze drying because we had 3 full freezers, I was thinking of getting another one, and I decided I should buy a walk-in freezer instead. I started looking into walk-ins and realized they were expensive to buy (even used ones) AND expensive to own and operate. Then I found out Harvest Right was making home sized freeze dryers. One of my first thoughts was "I like Mountain House!" I have used their food for backpacking almost 45 years and we even kept some in our travel trailer, for just in case.
    Freeze dried food will stay fresh for many years and be ready and waiting when you need it.
    We do videos showing how we are using our Harvest Right Freeze Dryer to freeze dry food for long term storage. (We have the medium size machine that we got in August of 2017) We talk about how to load and unload the freeze dryer, how to know if the food is dry, is it better to freeze dry raw food or cooked food, and do a few taste tests. Freeze dried food is also great for prepping or just for camping and snacking!

      I had 3 bags of cooked beef steak. I just opened 2 more bags of beef - another bag or the raw steak and a bag of cooked steak. I'm rehydrating them using our food-saver vacuum marinator. They are looking good.

    Great video, as usual!
    I don't know that I'll ever be as organized as you, with spreadsheets and all. I'm just too lazy. Lol
    But I AM already going down a similar road, so we shall see. I have the rows of several black and yellow Costco buckets, all with erasable labels. And similarly, I started with one bucket of similar items. Now I have THREE bins of different kinds of cheese, two buckets of just beef, and so on. It really is fun and addictive, beyond the practical prepping aspect!

      Don't try to out lazy me! 🤣 We started out tracking ours pretty much the same way you're doing.
      We keep it super simple by not "organizing" it! 😁
      We just put the bags into bins and track the locations in a data base. It's like a small, super simple, warehouse management system. (We both spent a lot of years in food related manufacturing) Once the quantities and varieties got large enough, we found tracking it this way was simpler than organizing

    • @FreezeDriedIceCreamPrepper
      @FreezeDriedIceCreamPrepper 7 місяців тому

      @SchoolReports Describing it that way actually sounds much less intimidating. No organization required! 😅 So the previous commentor who mentioned "de-fragging" makes a ton of sense now. I guess it doesn't really matter, as long as you have SOME way of locating stuff. But I am definitely going to consider making some sort of list like you do!

      @@FreezeDriedIceCreamPrepper It probably helped that I had spent so many years in a work environment with millions of items, in dozens of warehouses, and we could always (almost always:) find anything because it was in searchable database telling us where it was.

    If used long enough, your bins will contain multiple different products. Is there a threshold at which you would lay out all of your bins at once and "defrag" their contents? A complete overhaul so all of your stews are together, all of your raw beef are together, all of your peaches are together and so on, and rebuild your database?

    • @SchoolReports
      @SchoolReports  7 місяців тому +4

      Defrag! What a great description, I love it! We did "defrag" the bins once, when we had less varieties. It was a giant job that I won't do again.
      It's just all a mix now. I'm hoping to do a video to really explain what we have and how simple it is to use. (for us) In fact, we prefer to have a mix in the tubs, that way if we ever need some for grab-and-go, we'll already have a mix. Like the bins in the videos I did for the "First 50 Batch" series - 6 to 8 different foods per bin.
      😀Two words: Barcode Scanner. (And maybe a little RC forklift)
      My first thought when I decided to track our inventory, was to use a warehouse inventory management system. (WMS) And, of course, barcode every bag (or RFID tags) with a unique code, have scanners at the prep area, bagging area, and at the racks. I could track all movement! I could track the WIP and the BOMs for each batch. . . . 🤣
      The response I got? Let me ask you this - Is it possible for someone to damage their Eye-rolling muscles? My wife thought we should try a simple database first, since we don't have 1000's of SKU's or a large warehouse.
      But, seriously. . .
      We keep it super simple by not "organizing" it! 😁
      There is no "organization" of our inventory on our racks of freeze dried food anymore. 😁We just put the bags into bins and track the locations in a data base. It's like a small, super simple, warehouse management system. (We both spent a lot of years in food related manufacturing) We do use the printed hard copy for the day to day movements of bags in and out.
      We are using OpenOffice database to track our bags of food, and of course, we can sort by food, date, or location. Once the quantities and varieties get large enough, tracking is way simpler than organizing.

      That's very interesting. I hadn't considered those inherent advantages of your current system. Have you ever sat down and worked out approximately how long your current inventory could sustain your family in the event that's all you had available?

    • @SchoolReports
      @SchoolReports  7 місяців тому +1

      @@TheOriginalMaxGForce We've never worked out how long it would last us. (We have maybe 2500 to 3000 lbs before drying)
      Until I started making the "First 50 Batch" series, we had never even given much thought to having any plan or goal for our freeze drying. That was one big reason I started making the series to tell other people to start with a plan or goal. Any plan or goal!

      In a survival situation, 3000 lbs should give 2 people just over 4 lbs of food each day for 1 year, or enough for 4 people for 6 months. That would allow those people to survive pretty well.

    Thanks for the video. I do see that a lot of the folks that are freeze drying will record the initial weight of the product before the freeze drying process. I do wonder tho, for things like "meats", will they actually absorb that much more water than their original amount?

    • @SchoolReports
      @SchoolReports  7 місяців тому

      I like to have the starting weight regardless of whether or not it will only absorb the amount to bring it back what it was before freeze drying, because I may want to use it as an ingredient in something without rehydrating first. (I'm not sure if that answers the question)

      Well....I have had a couple of instances where the food had an oder/taste that I could not describe. It didn't make me sick. I had 2 bags of cubed ham and 2 bags of raw flounder. They both smelled the same. I was using HR bags and noticed they had a weird smell to them. But I have had other foods in the same batch of bags not be affected at all. Weird. So whenever I open a bag, if it has that indescribable smell I just toss it. It's only been from my 2021 batches.@@SchoolReports
