WHAT IS CLEAR COAT ON A CAR OR TRUCK?
Clear coat car paint is paint or resin with no pigments and hence imparts no color to the car. It's simply a layer of clear resin that is applied over colored resin. Almost 95 percent of all vehicles manufactured today have a clear coat finish
CAN YOU APPLY CLEAR COAT PAINT TO A CAR?

If you like PPG you will love SPI products. They have a variety of clears and a system to do the semi to flat to whatever level of flat you like. Any questions you can speak directly to the owner who is the man responsible for all their products. Not affiliated with the company just a satisfied customer for over 15 years.
The paint stores famous words "it's the same product" I can't stand when they do that. It usually ends up if I listen to them my night is filled with 4 letter words

I used that Matrix clear on my amx. You said that was good and it worked out fine for me on my first time painting a car.

Interesting, I always thought House of Kolor was a top notch brand and planned on using it on my car. Now I am second guessing myself, thankfully my friend Pete is here to give us the info we need to do it right.
I disagree, ive used house of kolor tons of times, pete messed up, or he is not used to the material. It went on dry because the pot life, air temperature, reducer temp, hardener temp, everything plays a roll, adjust to the environment and use the right combination, in fact, I believe he admitted that he got a run which is user error and tried to correct it mid job. It’s not due to a “trash” product.
Louis, the COMPANY, HoK sucks as a company.
They always blame the customer for the problem.
The opposite of great companies like PPG (i rarely use PPG because of cost, but when I did and something went wrong, they took over an hour an a half on the phone explaining what went wrong, and sent me another gallon FREE.

@@billroubanis4750 i don’t think what i said was bs, however I don’t disagree with you either, but as a production painter for 15 years i have used everything out there and having the correct experience with different types of clear makes all the difference, no two products are the same, if you mess up, it’s because you messed up. I’m also not defending hok, and have never had any problems with their product, and i agree there are much much much better products, companies, however it doesn’t matter what you spray if the setup is incorrect the product will not perform to its own unique ability.

What I would like to point out as a problem with HOK is not that their product does not work under any circumstances. Of course it does. My first experience with HoK products was terrific.
What I have a problem with, is their customer service. For you, it is okay, in my opinion, to tell another pro that he messed up, because I am sure that if he would have followed the script perfectly, he wouldn't have a problem.
BUT, for HOK to defend a product that is that unforgiving by saying YOU MESSED UP, I think is ridiculous, and it starts with the attitude of the owner, who is like that about all his products.
What a customer rep should be saying is, "I am sorry, I know, this product is a little difficult to work with, unless you have exactly the right set up, that is why we are so specific on the label and we warn people to follow the instructions to the letter"
And, of course, to do that, they need to have a stronger warning on there than some other clears that are INCREDIBLY forgiving nowadays, and that are also sandable, once you DO make a mistake.
PPG stuff is very expensive, of course, but their clears are so much more flexible, seems to me, than HoK clears, and Matrix clears have performed exceptionally well for me (though I doubt their UV protection is as good as PPG) under a variety of circumstances, including painting a very large car in 90° heat recently--for half the price of what HOK cost me.
I have only been painting for 3 years and I do it as a hobby, pretty much, but I believe many HOK customers are guys like me who have only painted 15-20 cars and are just getting started trying to do slightly custom work.
Of the 5 companies whose clears I have used where I interacted with customer service, HoK was BY FAR the worst.
I am just telling the truth.
None of us have ZERO ego. We don't like to be interrogated by service reps who act bewildered that their product didn't work and who are certain we must have committed some flagrant violation if anything went wrong..
It never ceases to amaze me how so many so called "pros" or "custom painters" in our industry do the dumbest stuff, and then say a product is junk, regardless if the product is cheap or expensive. If you had never used that product on an overall, and didn't do some kind of test sprayout, to know how overlaps and flashes would effect finish, then thats on you! The guy on the phone is right, its you! Learn how a new product will work, before you do an overall that turns out horrible, and then blame the product! You showed how it looked great on the dash, so it can look great, you just didn't know how to apply it on a large area, with overlaps. You will also get settle, in a booth that doesn't evacuate adequately with some flat/matte clears. Ive used all of em, and 2060 is awesome, you virtually cannot screw it up, but that doesn't mean another product is junk. I can't imagine being a tech rep, for any company, and hearing the kind of bitchin they must hear, because guys in our industry think they know it all, and do no wrong. Smh.
I used BASF once- I had such a hard time with their base coat, I had to fatten up TWO guns, with 1.5, 33psi, and have another shop painter attack the car on the other side JUST to get it all covered in time.

I know you already know this my friend Pete but you shouod have already known that fast hardner wasnt going to work on a full spray job on a single panel yes on 2 your stretching it... its going to flash and not melt together very fast and do nothing but leave dry spray but again i know you know this thats why im suprised you even decided to shoot it with the HOC fast hardner clear

UMMMMMM ---- There isn't any Fast Hardner with the HOK... It's a Universal 1 style hardner. HOK only provides one hardenr for their clear not multi hardners like PPG or Matrix... I sprayed it with the HOK -- because my suppliers where out of the PPG brand that I wanted to use.. I think I mentioned that in the video???? Thanks for watching

What's insane is I'm painting my Civic Oem Captiva Blue Pearl also. I go down to my local paint supply store and while inquiring about clear paint they take me to the HOK section. What's hanging on the wall as a display?! A peddle bike frame!!!! 😂 So glad I bumped into this channel!
Don't pay any attention to that shit , he seems to get all worked up truth is he screwed up we all do it hok clear is a good product just read the tds sheet and don't improvise . All clears I've done tend to like it to the cool side of 100 F

Painting cars since the 70s only issues I ever had with PPG were operator errors.
My favorite is the Dupont chromabase and for show cars and bike Dupont CFX is straight killer. That HOK is tricky and it took me a little time to get it figured out but now I like it, but it's not like my Dupont.

I just learned something- valspar also has the refinishing company that has the colorful parrot on the label- it sucks as well. Their reactive reducer for tricoat will fizz like soda when you mix it in their base coat. I threw it out, I said no way am I going to try that.
I’ve used HOK candy and Pearl bases. My findings were you use twice as much material!!!
I really like Southern Polyurethanes Universal Clear. It’s a HS clear that mixes 1:1. I’m no pro but this video is right on the money! Thanks Pete!
SPI Universal is a good Clear with two UV additives, but it is shiny, not flat as this customer wanted. Beautiful car!

Doesn’t mean House of Color isn’t a good product. Apparently, the catalyst isn’t suited for hot weather. It dries way too fast. They should make fast, medium and slow like most manufacturers.
Pet i use that 2060 flat very very often and being very good with it ,if you are going to use it on a full car ,I highly recommend you to use DT898 reducer no matter what temp, that is slower reduce ppg offers and will give you a bit more of time ,but you still have no time to lose with it when doing a full car, the mix says 6p x1 x1 but you can put a bit more reducer than that like 1.2 approximately y was a tip from the ppg general manager and friend which I do respect a lot ,try to have all the clear that you going to use mixed so you don't lose time at all and will be very smooth shut it like regular clear and don't worry if you still see it spotty after 20 0 30 mn it will smooth aut 2-3 hours or even next day as long you overlap it wet on wet,good luck my friend Pet, believe it or not I wish to have a shop like you some day .
I don't have a problem with the 2060, it's the HOK that SUCKS! Flex and Flat is the best on the market, when I did this car my suppliers where out of it and only had the HOK for me to use.. PPG is the BEST hands down.

Yeah I did! I also mentioned that the clear went on dry on my other channel, and that if it where not from waiting it would have probably been fine.. The POT LIFE of the PPG CLEAR using the Variance Hardners is up to 8 hours, where as the pot life on the HOK --- Well we found out didn't we!! So whats your POINT???? Besides trying to play District Attorney on an OPEN AND SHUT CASE??? The video wasn't about how long I waited it was about the product not supplying variable hardners for their product like other companys do, and the HOK spraying like Laquar Paint instead of Urathane... So like I said -- WHATS YOUR POINT???

Let me start with HAPPY HOLIDAYS to you and your family. Something about Valspar They were actually a subsidiary of Mobil Oil back in the late 70s so that your old school technology you hit it on the head.
as someone who has been painting a long time, should this problem every arise again, empty your gun and load up some straight slow reducer in and spray your dry areas.....Be careful not to flood it on because you're asking for more problems but if you do it right, you can melt down those dry areas

I would like Pete’s opinion on it as well, but this customer wanted a flat finish. I am not sure if a flattener agent would work. Pete did a car just like this one but required flames. He used an “Inter-coat” clear to place the tape, paper and flames on top of. That would be a different subject as well as that video was about 9 years ago. It’s like a guy told me decades ago, find something you like and you stick with it, that how most of us end up married! Pete like his PPG and the Binks.

Good Luck getting PPG DCX61 hardener nowadays. Somewhere in the neighborhood of $225.00 a quart now, IF you can find it. I have 2 gallons of PPG 2021 I'd love to use, but can't find hardener at a reasonable price to spray it out.

@@diyautoschool Thanks I bought a couple quarts of Tamco HH61 hardener for about a third of the PPG price from a different distributor. Only downfall is it takes longer to fully harden, but nothing wrong with letting it flow a little longer. I know some of these video's are dated and this one kind of fell through the cracks. Lol I see in the comments you hate Tamco because of the people there. I ordered online and just needed hardener. I'll do some small spray-outs and see what I get for results. What could go wrong, it's only going over black !!!
I dont have such experience but for my eyes most difficult with medium quality brands. They quality allways migrates from cheap to decent and very rare but sometimes medium quality stuff becomes premium. So then you buy premium class stuff you get what you pay. With cheap stuff 90 proc you get what yuo pay and nothing complain. Medium stuff is lottery today is good tomorrow could be shit. My personal moto i am to poor to buy cheap stuff

If you clear is drying too fast. Why didn't you add Reducer? I add Reducer to my clear 75% of the time. Although most people I don't think see any difference. I think the Reducer takes just a smidgen of that shine out.

I’ve said 25 years ago- I will never use HOC crap EXCEPT their candy, because I know the formulas. SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE EVERYTHING HOC is super finicky, and flashes waaaaaay too fast. Same with Tamco- fn Tamco is as thick as syrup- and it flashes in 12 minutes. You aren’t going to lay paint on a whole car well in 12 minutes.

Pete you ever use dynacoat clear pro. I have the same problem with that dry look just that spot on your hood and side cowl area but with gloss I am a amature painter

Hey man can you recommend a compressor and gun combo? I have an old beater than needs a full respray and then my other car could definitely use a full clear coat refurb (if the paint is still decent)
I keep hearing that HOK doesn't hold up to gasoline. No experience with it myself, but if that's true then I would not use it on a motorcycle
that it is not true, HOK has chemical resistance, you can use UC21, is very easy to use, axcellent flow and leveling and has great gloss

I use Nasons high gloss clear because my local paint store gave it to me cheap and it's turning my metallic silvers gray.
Clear coats are not clear. They will change the color.
The clear is too cheap and is blushing your metallics, use PPG MC161, a little more but gives you good bang for your buck and mileage

possibly so, since HOK only offers 1 hardner for their clear instead of several different temp ranges such as Matrix or PPG!

Where do you, or any of your followers for that matter, stand on Speedokote clears and finishes? I see they're a Dayton, Ohio company and haven't sold out to anyone yet, but they seem to be a pretty popular brand. Just wondering.
I've used speedokote high build primer ,European clear and seam sealer for bout a year now, had no problem at all. Clear coat buffs really good

My biggest problem with some brands of paint & clear is the "UV" additives! Some don't mention it while others tell you they use two types of "UV" inhibitors. This issue only shows up in the long run as some park in a garage at home, yet have to park outdoors during work hours. The additives are chemicals, who made them? How much did they add? What is the extra cost? While colors can always fade with time, the clear looses it shine quick and even the best can't get it like new!
85 degrees is pretty warm. 6:1 ratio? I don't see anything in their instructions on application temperatures or using a retarder. I would think at the very least there should be a chart on reducing the amount of catalyst based on temperature. And nothing about using reducers. Seems a little irresponsible and given the cost of your time and the materials... Its been a few decades since I tried painting but I see why most painters will stick to using only one brand across the board. Consistency and none of those costly surprises. Ouch! I'd also worry about compatibility of applying the PPG clear over top of the HOK product.

The people at house of Kolor are the WORST, Least helpful, blame-the-cusromer jerks in the entire business.
The whole company is a joke, and there are similar problems with many of their products, but their clear coats are THE WORST iN THE BUSINESS for cars.
Even when perfectly used they are not as good as medium priced brands like Matrix, and when not used perfectly they are disasters
Some of their paints are great, but not all.
And the attitude, which starts from the owner, is, if it came out wrong, it is YOUR fault, because we know how to use it and it works great for us.

Great products do not require degrees from House of Kolor to use.
Every brand is easier to use and more flexible than theirs.
PPG, which has a confusing yellow tint that changes the color of the paint, has everything set up on computer so you can match accordingly. Their product works great, and if it doesn't, they will take care of your problem. Not HoK.
Matrix is terrific and slightly cheaper than House of Kolor.
House of Kolor sucks as A COMPANY.

I am repeating what I have read about this subject. No, it changes the chemistry and durability of the finish. I wouldn’t chance it In case the “UV” stabilizers just happen to be in the hardener, while the “UV” additive is in the clear. Ask yourself, how much is your time worth if you have problems and a re-do is in the future?
Hard to trust you after you say all of the HOK clears are too fast. Especially when their Show Klear has a 30 minute flash time!👌👎
It depends on where you live and conditions your spraying in. I tried a couple times House of Kolor UC35 Kosmic Klear thats a 2:1:1 mix but i stopped using it because not only was it too fast, also and main problem was sometimes the 311 reducer would be yellowish tinting the clear and making anything white have a disgusting yellow tint. Which when they charge like $60/quart of reducer thats bullshit they cant even be consistent. Now only thing i use regularly that HOK makes is the KD3000 Surfacer/Sealer, as far as base, binder, top clears there are far better coatings available for a lot less money

House of kolor clear fkd me bad the first time I used it. Hard as a rock, solvent pop rash, it won’t buff and it purely pissed me off. Had to redo the whole car in ppg 2021. I should of known better. Never use that crap!
HOK flash time are more extended, mayve that is the reason for your solvent pop, depending on the conditions of your shop but usually 15 to 20 minute flash against 5 to 10 minutes for most of the other clear coats

Yes it was mixed up for a while like I mentioned... BUT -- If the hardner supplied for the HOK wasn't a universal hardner instead of a tempature degree hardner like PPG then the clear would have flowed out nicely and evenly.. PPG Flex and Flat clear mixed with the proper hardner/activator has a pot life of up to 8 hours where as the HOK is --- well we found out! And by the way Bill -- Calling it how it is here ---- I do these type of videos to NOT LOOK LIKE A DUMB ASS -- But rather to HELP others out and LEARN FROM MY MISTAKES so THEY WON"T HAVE THIS PROBLEM! REMEMBER THAT WHEN YOUR CALLING IT LIKE IT IS! "LATER"!

HOK has TDS and for UC21 hich is the one I use the most is 1 to 3 hours depending on the hardener you use, mixing the clear take a few minutes and you always need to check the base before mixing the clear

Come on man just admit you screwed up , we all do it it clearly says it's a fast drying clear thats ready to sand in under 30 min . 😂 sc-100 , us-co1 are both excellent clears ppg is a great product but use the clear if u like scratches least little thing scatches that clear just ask any harley owner
I don't understand the problem you're supposed to put enough clear on the car you shouldn't have a dry spot unless you put too much urethane primer on there and didn't let it cure properly in between coats or if you put your base coat on too wet and you didn't let it Flash before you started putting your clear on you know you put one coat of clear and your foot to for wet coat of clear I don't care if it's a show car or a f****** bicycle that's the way you do it so I don't understand the problem
