    Beside the obvious benefit of arch btw rights, i mostly just use arch for it's speed on my not so powerful laptop. Paired with i3wm, it's incredibly fast. I switched from debian about 3 weeks ago, and honestly it's not too tricky, highly recommend to any debian based distro users. Also, pacman is really great.
    tl;dr: i use arch btw

      Why is pacman great? What's better than in apt or aptitude?
      Honestly I don't really hear anything in this video, where I feel like it's any better than other distros.
      Like: 'You have full control over your system!' Ähm... in opposite to what distro?
      The only thing I learned about Arch is, that you have way more work to do before things are running.

    • @jakestbu8692
      @jakestbu8692 Місяць тому

      @@kinimodsannas1276 By you have complete control, it generally means a couple things. One, it comes with essentially zero software, you only install exactly what you need, meaning that it runs faster and uses far less storage. A Linux Mint install may come with a few thousand packages, while Arch comes with a few hundred, which are mostly essential for the system to run (even the sudo command needs to be installed). It doesn't come with a GUI like other distros, you are able to install that yourself. You don't like the way other distros have internet set up? No problem, you control the exact way you set up your network connection. You control all the partitions, so you can make it as efficient and storage efficient as you need for your specific setup.
      About pacman, it just runs faster I find. It also can update your whole system's packages with a simple `pacman -Syu`. It's fast and simple. Not really much more to it than that tbh.

    The thumbnail (I know you don't get to choose it) of the mountain background reminds me of how I explain Arch vs. other distros: Arch is *Everest.* People love to say they climbed it, even though it's pretty easy to get a guide to take you to the top these days (and the real challenge is probably Gentoo or LFS, which is K2 in this analogy).
    And yes, I use Arch, btw. Even though I "fell of the mountain" my first attempt, it was just in a VM, and my subsequent installs have "let me down" by how _easy_ they've been, both to set up and to maintain.

    Very good distro to fuck around with, since you will break your own shit more often than it just breaks itself.

If you use linux, you WILL encounter strange cryptic issues which never happen on Windows, so you should've already gotten used to troubleshooting and customizing literally every part of the system, which is what arch actually encourages you to do.

      YT keeps deleting for being long so I will just give a summary.
      (Assuming it's a distro other than arch since first time)
      If your distro has the option, pick xfce. It's lighter.
      Go to applications>settings>display manager.
      Decrease resolution to a smaller one with same ratio. Decrease refresh rate to around 60 max if it isn't already.
      Install autocpu-freq, tlp, powertop and ibam
      Use first two for automatically configuring.
      Use the other two for monitoring
      powertop will be more detailed you can "powertop --auto-tune" to automatically tune everything.
      This will be enough for pretty much everyone. More tuning will depend on distro.

  • @MindCaged
    @MindCaged 3 місяці тому +12

    I admit I've seen some interesting stuff on linux and I do kind of want to learn it, but the difficulty curve for me in particular is rather high, not because I'm not a technical person, but rather the opposite and I've spent half my life on windows and learning it practically inside and out. I've accumulated a ton of knowledge and tools that are /specific/ to windows, and just don't really carry over. So it's the sunk-cost fallacy where I'm so heavily invested in something switching to something else feels like a huge cost. I'm aware it's a fallacy but it doesn't make it feel like any less of a huge ask.
    Don't get me wrong, if I sat down in front of a computer running most distros I could probably easily figure out how to run a browser or office software or something, but I for an unpleasant change would not at all be comfortable with my odds of easily troubleshooting problems or figuring things out as one thing Linux generally isn't past basic usage is intuitive. Windows relatively speaking is somewhat designed to hold your hand through most tasks, while Linux expects you to have at least some idea what you're doing.

    • @calvinlucian387
      @calvinlucian387 2 місяці тому +7

      Too long and blatantly wrong. Linux distros such as Mint are very user-friendly and will hold your hand more than Windows ever will. Without consuming half your RAM for "updates".

      @alexstone691 2 місяці тому +1

      People keep saying "x is better, y is more user friendly" but people use what they are comfortable with, i personaly as a tech person just became more comfortable on linux as i had to live on very low spec machines and linux worked great while windows would not at all (real story amd drivers bootloop or freeze often on my laptop but linux works fine)

    • @davidkovic2229
      @davidkovic2229 2 місяці тому +3

      If it's something you're interested in, you don't have to make the switch all at once. Pick up a 64gb or higher USB drive and look up how to flash a distro to it. From there, you can boot Linux and use it directly from the USB drive without affecting Windows at all. It's incredibly easy. Just start using it bit by bit alongside Windows, just playing around and getting a feel for it. Only use it for as long as you're having fun with it.
      You will constantly be recommended Linux Mint and that's more than likely your best starting option. It uses a lot of the same design ethos as Windows and does nearly everything the same way while also being considerably simpler and more intuitive to use. If you're still unsure, just watch a few guides and videos of people using it and see if you're still interested.

      Go for it! Though I wouldn't recommend it for anyone's first time using linux, if you're willing to dive right in, might as well. I'd also recommend testing in a VM first, if you have the hardware for it.

      honestly arch isn't that different from other distros, because every single linux distro will have a shit ton of problems you have to solve yourself, even fresh OOTB. I've used around 7 distros at this point, and none of them work OOTB, and no, nvidia drivers aren't the problem, linux itself is.

      I can't even use official "Linux+Nvidia" or SDDM will be black. So I have to use "LinuxLTS+Nvidia-LTS"

      sort of depends on what you do with the AUR, most i get from it is librewolf and vesktop. if you know what you’re doing it should still be pretty good stability wise.

    So, bench racing by posers as opposed to actually using the PC for something. A distribution or any OS is just the base for applications. No one runs an OS unless they are on the spectrum. They run applications. I'm so glad we are far beyond this nonsense of Nerd Flexing.

      "no one runs an OS unless they're on the spectrum" congratulations !! almost everyone who has ever used a computer or other similar device is autistic now they just added it to the DSM-5 !! its true I went to get my autism assessment, and one of the first questions they asked was "have you ever used an operating system before?" I can't believe they didn't notice this symptom earlier
      (^ all this is sarcasm, i am autistic. like "so autistic that the team debating my diagnosis didnt need to do much debating" autistic. "passed my autism exam with flying colors" autistic. so I cant really debate your point lol)
