From Jackson Wang's progress on Putonghua, we all see that honing tones, individual sounds, stressed syllables in sentences, and intonations are equally important if you want to speak natural and "fluent" Mandarin Chinese, or any language in fact. Most curricula stop at the very beginning of helping Mandarin learners build up a solid foundation of the Chinese sound system, and it's rare for students to have proper separate training for their pronunciation from traditional vocabulary and grammar learning! BUT now you can join my “Finding Your Mandarin Voice” pronunciation training program on www.RitaChinese.com Hear Putonghua clearly, and speak crisp by the end of this year🙌

Very interesting cultural video! Learning more about the diff between mandarin and Cantonese is interesting! + the pronunciation tips!! You highlight important stuff! As I watched the short segments of Wang, it was quite tough to understand, so I thought maybe I good video would be: how to understand native speakers!! And the different ways they say words (very quickly)! I know you’ve made one before, but would loveeee a part 2! Anyway, once again a great video! Thanks

Oh my god I love videos like this! I don't know a word of mandarin but I would love to learn it someday! It would be super cool if you could make a video about WayV. They are super multi-lingual. Hendery, Lucas and Xiaojun all are native cantonese speakers (Hendery even made some videos about Cantonese slang on their UA-cam channel) and Ten is thai and learned mandarin when he was joining the group. It was so interesting to see his learning journey and how the others helped him to get better in the language and your analysis of their language development from debuting to now would be soooo interesting!

You forgot Shanghainese as well (his mother tongue; but I guess he spoke Cantonese more as he grew up in Hong Kong). But I actually didn't know his Putonghua was so bad in his early days LOL. I thought he always spoke Putonghua since childhood as he's from an immigrant family. & is obviously super pro-China nowadays.

I'm around HSK5 now. Would learning Cantonese improve my Mandarin pronunciation or character recognition?
I'm getting to literacy for sure so I don't need Canto to get literate, but it might help. What I really wonder is whether knowing Canto would improve my Mandarin pronunciation.

As the mandarin speaker and a Cantonese learner, i personally think these two languages are definitely different in pronunciation and studying Cantonese doesn't help you study mandarin at all.

You say it’s difficult to cantonese speaker to pronounce certain mandarin sound (retroflex, etc), that’s right, but Jackson have mandarin speaking parent and learn both mandarin and cantonese in school (maybe I’m wrong, I’m not sure about that). He just have a southern accent.

You are making it sound like it's a huge leap from Cantonese to Mandarin. It's not. It's ridiculously easy phonetic-wise. It's far harder in the opposite direction. The problem is when you have two similar sister languages or dialects, you tend to confuse them and forget which language you are speaking. That's why you use the same foot for both the gas and brake pedal in a car instead of one foot on each. Furthermore, most of the sounds you are nitpicking about exist in different accents of Mandarin as well. It's very common for si to replace shi in many parts of China, and xi and sh are indistinguishable in fast conversation. I honestly think you are really clueless for someone who is native.
