The whole Odelay album is just fantastic,
back in '97 would just have it on repeat!
That album oozes sunlight. A scorched summer's afternoon with salt in the air, compressed into a tidy collection of tracks.
Epic album. I still drive around with it on the stereo. Never aged.

Don't want to get all music snob, Ha
but I think Kid Rock built a whole music vibe off 'Sissyneck' alone 😉🤘
A buddy of mine in radio school told me to go buy that album. Best $10 I ever spent!!
@@richardrobbins8067 I have never heard a single Kid Rock song that I am aware of. My only reference for him is I’m vaguely aware that he looks like an idiot.
What makes Beck a master is his ability to mashup genres - he can put country, rap, blues and 5 other styles in one song and MAKE IT WORK
I have the same ability but with food, I can eat anything and produce shit too.
@@justinatest9456 as evidenced by this comment
Check out MC 900ft Jesus

Personally, I always enjoyed Beck's everything and the kitchen sink approach. Like a musical collage/mosaic. Nothing else really like him out there. Devil's Haircut, The New Pollution, Hotwax and more recently Dreams (2017) are great tracks from the man.
His discography always evolving. Its a journey. Hope he goes like Elfman
I still think sea changes was his masterpiece. I’d been a beck fan for years and loved how you never knew what you were going to get with each new album, but sea changes was shocking in how stripped down but beautiful it was. I was young and pregnant when it came out and that (& QOTSA songs 4 the deaf) were my obsessions during a hellish 3rd trimester.
I think every album has gems but I feel like Sea Change was nothing but gem after gem. Just a perfect album.
Kinda of like the more pop [and not near as dark] version of NIN(Trent Reznor; especially during the 'The Fragile' era) - both have managed to cram every sound effect on their computers into their music, but somehow manage to make it intelligible and not at all muddy. That's a real art, not a lot of people can pull off the amount of layering that they do without just making songs that are way too busy and difficult to understand/follow.
Yeah, wasn't to listen to all those records now...
That’s a nice way of putting it
Also; Lex is onto something. Mike Patton did the infamous "sandwich interview" and talked loosely about how the use of sampling and computers would create music that is so far removed from traditional music that it would eventually create entire new forms of non-sample based sound design. Beck was definitely in on the joke, so to speak
And then Mike made this ua-cam.com/video/iDOl5q7UXfg/v-deo.html best concert for me
Great analysis
Definitely got me thinking 🤔
🍻🍻
We are in this, at this time and age, we are living this comment 🤯 lol 😂
Consider he actually makes a facsimile of this song sampling this song ... with the distorted version of the first "verse" at the end I definitely think you are on to something.
Heh, look at young Beck, being all meta before anyone really cared about meta.
The 90's were an amazing time for music and to be young. I feel so lucky to have been there.
Beck is a true artist. He makes these selected "random" things sound good.
Becks the Napoleon Dynamite of Folk Rap Rock.
Beck is a genius - long career with many different sounds, big hits from every album he put out. And his videos are just as creative as his songs. Try Cellphone's Dead, my personal fave
Just don't listen to Sea Change while going thru a breakup. It's horrendous but beautiful and strums every single nerve in your brain.
"Strange but cool" is the perfect description of Beck. Try some stuff from his funk rock era next ("Sexx Laws", "Mixed Bizness") and then check out some of his more recent folk rock stuff ("Blue Moon", "Heart is a Drum") to get a great idea of his range!
Beck used the help of the Dust Brothers to produce this album. The Dust Brothers also helped produce Beastie Boys' 2nd album, Paul's Boutique and you can definitely feel their influence. Lots of layered sounds.
Not to mention that bitchin' soundtrack for 'Fight Club'! If they came along just a few decades later, they'd have a lot more mainstream notoriety considering how producers are now "famous" with artist track releases(for some reason, it's kinda weird - why the fuck would I want "DJ KHALED" opening my shit?). But it would actually be legitimate with them boys, lol.
Might be a slight point of confusion here (it was for me). The Dust Brothers are songwriters/producers. There was (is?) also a UK electronic music duo called The Chemical Brothers, who briefly named themselves "The Dust Brothers" in homage to the producers before changing to their new moniker.
@@michaelccozens not for me. The Dust Brothers produced Beck's Odelay and Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique.
Beck's always just doing his own thing.
Beck’s an interesting musician- to say the least. He uses a lot of weird samples in his music. Some of it does approach the territory of just being sound collages, but he definitely makes stuff you can’t help but consider “music.” Listen to his albums Mutations or Sea Change for this, or some of his later songs like “Girl,” and “Think I’m in Love” or “Sexx Laws” and “Mixed Bizness,” which are total funk workouts. Beck can play several instruments and always tours with a full band, so although he does rap a lot and use a lot of samples, he’s a very musical guy. That kind of stuff is just one part of what he does.
I agree, but I also see it a little differently. Beck's the kind of musician who, and I mean this in the best possible way, makes you question what "music" is. He's like a magician; hand him anything, and he'll make it music. The border I see on this song - and I do think it's a great, great song - is between, to the extent that there is a border dividing the two, pop music and high art. Beck challenges your basic perceptions and assumptions, and he did it in a piece that conquered the pop charts in the process. That's just amazing.
I was in a motorcycle accident in 2004 and needed an MRI. They gave me pain meds and something to calm me down so I didn't move during the test. The tech asked if I wanted music playing so I said sure why not. Beck - Where It's At was one of the songs. I think I visited the 3.5 dimension that Lex talked about while in the tube.
I had Dark Side of the Moon when they scanned my shoulder. Might as well enjoy it if you've got to be in one of those things (I'm not claustrophobic, but they still freak me out)
@@richardgoddard37 I've been an MRI machine roughly 10 times. I still keep my eyes closed and pretend I'm somewhere else. Ativan helps, but I still can't wait until it's over.
He's like .303
Range for days
Beck plays all these instruments in his songs. He's multi-talented and a Guinness.
I love How Lex explains what she hears/sees with music. Never disappoints 🥰
Beck is an artist. All his albums have at least one song that I love. He's never limited himself by genres. Just a vibe.
That's Beck playing every instrument incidentally.
Cage the Elephant 🐘 "Ain't No Rest For the Wicked" 🤘 it's also the opening song in Borderlands video game 🎮
YESSSSSS
its also like musique concrete inspired hip hop. becks dad was a conceptual artist so theres def like a "high art meets low art" vibe to this track (and really all of Odelay is like this too)
One of the most interesting musical artists in the past 25 years
Can't believe this song is 27 years old. Still a great tune! I enjoy the turntables the best.
That really is fucking insane lol Beck is such a Genius.
Wasn't there a shorter single version of this song? But agreed, seems that it was released yesterday.
@@aliasalias9411 yeah there was a radio edit. Pretty sure I have that on CD somewhere lol.
Beck is like a Chamaleon, you never know what to expect from him. His last two albums are a work of art from my own perspective.
@macarion Thanks!!
My prediction for your reaction to Beck was that Brad would get completely twisted trying to understand the lyrics and Lex would be just groovin’, lol. I’m pleasantly impressed guys! Trying to understand Beck is like trying to understand Warhol- you can’t. I choose to enjoy the groove and ride the wave with this guy. Love it!
Beck is one of the genius - pure genius - top tier 90's legends who still puts out amazing music (remember Kanye jumping onstage to take the Grammy for Beyonce?) That happened in 2014 and it was Beck he did that too - who was cool a can be about it and just brushed it aside and said he was a huge Kanye fan - cause Beck is OG music iconic legend - jut easy to miss if you are Millenial or younger. More a Gen X act. Despite being prominent and popular tp charting songs like "Loser" you did and this one here, and reaching his fame height from say 1994 to 2004, he kept pumping out amazing albums and won the biggest of all, Grammy Album of the year a full decade after his peak, 20 years from his come up. He has TONS of sick songs. Listen to "Sissyneck" - though I have dozens and dozens - he eases through hip hop, indie rock, folk/blues, and electronica with equal skill and high level results. One of the 90's golden children and a HUGE rabbit hole no one has taken on in the reacting world which is sad and weird honestly. His output, fame, and tunes would suggest he would be a big source for reactions. Maybe you all can give him more shots. Thanks for this one!
If you've ever watched Scott Pilgrim vs The World, I'm pretty sure Beck wrote every song for the movie in a weekend or just a few days. He wanted them to still sound rough around the edges.
Beck is just so hilariously funny in how he can lure you in and then throw all your expectations and listening habits under the bus.
lex's struggles with beck are very entertaining. I think of him as the main dadaist of pop music.
I think Brad likes alternative/indie rock. Lex is still trying to get use to it, but very surreal and too experimental for her lol. She's getting it recently though lol.
As a Beck fan I actually agree with what Lex said about 'it's almost not music'. Thats so true, especially any songs from the Mellow Gold and Odelay eras.
I agree with Lex when she described it as a 3.5th dimension. I thought that was very creative of her to say that.
Back is a certified musical genius and has dabbled and in my opinion mastered many genres in addition to his own unique sound. He won several Grammys in 2015 for his album Morning Phase which is kind of a folk album. Won several other Grammys as well.
For me Beck’s albums Mellow Gold, Mutations, Odelay, Sea Change, Morning View, Guero and The Information are masterworks.
it's folk, rap, groove, Beck is a genius!
Beck is a massive deep dive that will constantly surprise and blow your mind.
Exactly. Every album is a different adventure. And they're all great.
Glad You do this version and not the short one of the official video! 🙌 My fav one from Beck 👌
Also, watching him dance is so strange it's hypnotizing. The end of this video there are a group of people in a country western bar line dancing to the beat, which really goes well together oddly enough!
I always love lex's explanation of the music.
Do not try to understand BECK, just enjoy his absolute GENIUS 🤩🤩🤩
Understanding Beck is definitely an exercise for idiots mate
There was a band out of Wisconsin called Citizen King that did some stuff in this vein. Their big hit was 'Better Days' but they had a few interesting tracks from the same album, Mobile Estates, a name that you two may find intriguing.
Beck said this song was inspired by WWF Legend "The Million Dollar Champion: The Ringmaster."
You all are a great pair. Brad with his poker face...can't always tell what he is thinking. And I could listen to Lex's descriptions all day. She cracks me up. And Brads..."we were on the same page til that comment" LOL. Great reaction.
This Beck song comes on the radio and I'm turnin' in it UP! LOL....He is fantastic!!
2004, the last great roo.
This time saved the place from chaos.
It did, severe weather underway, delays, massive crowd chanting "RAIN OR SHINE".
Was about to get ugly.
Then bubbles appear, ne and my friends "play anything through the PA"
Where it's at starts.
Bubbles blowing, old schoolfans tamping out the flames, embracing Beck's chill beat.
Steve Winwood followed and stayed, followed by the Dead.
Walking back to camp in NORTHERN CALIFORNIA, you'd understand if you were there...Center Roo in the Gulf of MX
Complete sonic overload and that’s a great thing. There’s nothing in there that should be there. It such a brilliant production piece. At every point it’s about to implode, but it holds together. The album is stacked
Song is pure GENIUS!!!!...nothing weird about it. Way beyond it's time.
What you're hearing is that classic Dust Brothers production. Unreal, and found on so few albums-- including Beastie Boys' Paul's Boutique, the Fight Club soundtrack, and a few Delicious Vinyl cuts from Tone Loc and Young M.C.
2 Absolute Must Hear Classics,, Beck."Sissyneck" & Hotwax"..Some Serious Jams!!
Worked w/ Beck in the 90s… our label put out Loser. Glad to help you out with recommendations from this 8x Grammy winner🏆
You want to let your mind and ears melt in absolute satisfaction. Look up Beck doing a live performance of David Bowies 'Sound and Vision ' with a full on huge orchestra.
Beck is amazing, this and loser are my favorites. I have a cat named Beck, he is so mellow lol. Where it's at always makes me think of California.
DO MORE BECK!!!! My favorite musician of all time, multiple Grammy Award winning artist that covers all the genre's. A true Artist. Love seeing others react to the incredible uniqueness...highly entertaining. I am an Illustrator/Artist grew up in the 90's and I gravitated to Beck. Not a ton of people got on board with his unique sound past his radio hits...but went to Art School and got there and Beck was on all the Artist's and Animators playlists. He seemed to uniquely attract other artists.
Beck is amazing and completely under the radar most of the time. "Mellow Gold", "Guero", and "Odelay" are all FANTASTIC albums and should be listened to in their entirety (on repeat).
I saw Beck in 92 at a small club in Toronto and he was fun and funky as and all of us were instant fans.
I love Lex's perspective: it's music AND art... multidimensional.
Saw this live in a small club in '99. It was really good he had live horn players etc.
It's called sampling guys, hip hop and rap did it extensively but it's rooted back in the 40's and to be masterful it needs a lot of talent.Beck writes also his own music till today.True artist and very unique also.
This album was literally the background noise to every late 90s party I ever went to. That I can remember...
"Lost Cause", "Morning", "Think I'm in Love", all great songs to check out. Beck has many great songs. These older tracks are cool but he won a Grammy for some later stuff.
One of my favorite albums of all time. Wore this out. The type of music you can listen to a million times and still pick up new stuff all the time. I'm gonna go listen to "Devil's Haircut" now.
Pink Floyd, Beck, NWA, Tribe called Quest, Rancid, Blink 182 all of these are skate bands. Skate is street community, skate is hip hop, is punk, it is homeless, it is outsider. Skate music is always the groove
Beck is my favourite genius. He makes getting through life so much easier because life is insane and Beck's music fits right in. BTW the sounds are not random. It's fantastic. I love his music
90's Beck is incredible. No cap. Thanks for reviewing!
Guess who beat R&B, pop artists (but very sexy lol) very mainstream artist, Beyonce in the 2014 Grammy's ?
Mr. Weirdo , artsy alternative punky rock, wacky hip hop mix himself, Beck! lol. One of the greatest upsets in Grammys's history. Beck is a beast. He's kind of a genius.
Ayy I just found your page, and I’m loving the reactions so far. I get where Lex is coming from, Beck puts a ton of texture on his music, I get the “sound effect” thinking. It’s way more about a vibe than a song. But his production is some of the best in the business. Please keep it up!
Devil's Haircut is another great Beck tune.
Boom Bap Beck. Dude is nonsensically talented
It sounds like the mix is weird in this version where the noise was way up front. The regular version isn't as hard on the ears.
Beck is too cool. Get crazy with the cheese whiz.
Lex's comment about 3.5D made me think more about the meaning of the song: It's a throw back to DJ's, starts in the 70's slowly gets taken over by electronics. Just my 2cents ;)
This song conveyed what it would sound like, waiting for the bus in East LA.
Just like the beastie boys sound like the NY subway.
I thought Lex was going to describe this as a Swap Meet where a table blew up and nobody considered the damage.
He does reference Gary Wilson in the song who was very experimental in his music. Beck channeled him with all the electronics in this song.
I wish I could give this two thumbs up. This is why I watch music reactions. Thank you.
Blues-Rock, rap, punk, jazz, techno... Beck 👌
My dog totally freaked when I was watching this reaction. I guess all 2.5D noises and 3.5 scape stuff was a little too much. He climbed on top of me and just shook until the song was over. Kinda like when I saw Beck at Ohana a few months back. 😁
Listen to ”Morning”, showing another side of Beck, beautiful ☺️
Also have to add that in the video they are county line dancing to this to add to the WTF factor. Beck is an absolute genius.
You ought to see him perform in concert” he’s like a super DJ” he’s usually up there by himself singing and making all that stuff happen all alone... And he’s quite successful
"Its somewhere between the 3rd and the 4th dimension "
😆😆😆my god, Lex. You just perfectly summed up Becks music
🤘😎🤘
Put jazz, lounge and hip hop in a bag and throw it down the stairs = Beck.
Amazing.
Love Beck's stuff.
Beck is that rare thing, an artist who is instantly recognisable but constantly different. You should definitely give the band John Spencer Blues Explosion a listen, especially the song 2 Kindsa Love, I think you'll enjoy it, it has a similar vibe to Beck's stuff. Love the channel guys, thanks
4:40 what she was trying to talk about is all the layers that his music has. and at one point he said it was inspired by his uncle collages. thats why his music has so many layers and especially this album. and he was playing of it and with it with each new breakdown in the song. dude is a Real genius!
My favorite Beck song is "Loser".
The different between Floyd and Beck is Floyd was usually trying to tell some kind of story with their music. But Beck is trying to subvert musical conventions and expectations here within the boundaries of popular music at the time. And he's doing it for multiple genres at the same time. So Pink Floyd is thinking along the lines of "what's going to convey the story and emotion we're going for here?" and Beck is probably thinking more along the lines of "what are some popular ideas in music right now and how can I twist them or play with them to challenge them or turn them on their head?"
I saw Beck back in 94' ,I believe,in Orlando. We were soooooooooo high. The "good ol' days" when we were young and just doing it one day at a time.Sigh........got bills and stuff, now. 🙂
I definitely think Beck's collaborations with the Dust Brothers are some of his best work Odelay & Guero are great albums. But one of my favourite Beck tunes is Timebomb at just under 3 minutes it's pop perfection for me
At this stage in Beck's career he was experimenting with rap/spoken word, jazz and avant grade experimentation. He was def. trying to do something new. He did more conventional records later in his career.
Oh yes Beck is weird but cool jaja. How you explain his music? Alternative rock, jazz, artsy, funk, hip hop? Put it all together and shake it up. From the 1990s and 2000s we like Beck jaja
He's got some Frank Zappa in him !!!.....very good to listen to with adequate headphones on !
Oh the mastery of Beck... soundscapes is right man lol u gotta check out "Devils Haircut"!
More Beck!! Many of his albums have very different vibes (mellow, hip-hop, folk, soul), it takes many different listens to get the full breadth of his music, but its all worthwhile.
Beck is a lyrical genius! I love this man and his music
Sounds like Napoleon Dynamite at the high school talent show.
Them lines at the end... dude sounds like the joints just hit him.
Beck wrote the anthem to cubical workers everywhere in the 90's
Lex. you are SPOT ON! I seen Beck on 3 different occasions and if his sound effects weren't on point he would restart the song again. lol he was super intoxicated and had to restart this one 6 times. lol. GREAT SHOW! PLEASE LISTEN TO "DEBRA" THAT'S A GREAT SONG!!!!
Between 3 and 4th dimension. Epic..Beck is a genius
Sounds like Beck did "regulate emotions" for Lex.
The Couch is where it's at!!😂🔥
Lex, your takes are unique! Both of ya’ll are entertaining. I’ve watched a few and still like “Mother”, since ya’ll mention Floyd lol. Sprinkles, had me all, 💥!
It isn't music. It is pure candy for your sense of hearing.
