This song dominated the summer of 1996. In fact, according to Billboard magazine, it was the #1 Alternative song of 1996, beginning its three-week run at #1 on the Alternative chart on July 6, 1996. It was also one of the Top 100 Mainstream Rock songs of 1996, coming in at #77 on that year-end chart. This means that some brave Top 40 stations gave this song airplay in spite of the band's name.

Jerome Martin "Jerry" Haynes (January 31, 1927 - September 26, 2011) was an American actor from Dallas, Texas. He is most well known as Mr. Peppermint, a role he played for 30 years as the host of one of the longest-running local children's shows in television, the Dallas-based Mr. Peppermint (1961-1969). He was the father of Butthole Surfers frontman Gibby Haynes. Just a bit from Wikipedia.
Gibby Haynes' father was Mr. Peppermint on television in North Texas, decades ago. People used to say he hated his son's music. The truth is, he loved his son and his son's accomplishments.

The Butthole Surfers have been around since 1981. I bought my first Butthole Surfers record in 1985. This song is from the mid 90s, WAY later in their career. You should start with their first album ‘Pee Pee The Sailor/A Brown Reason To Live’, then go on from there to ‘Psychic … Powerless … Another Man’s Sac’, as well as their EP ‘Cream Corn From The Socket Of Davis’. Other great Butthole Surfers albums are ‘Rembrandt Pussyhorse’, ‘Locust Abortion Technician’, and ‘Hairway To Steven’. They were basically the punk rock Grateful Dead; as they and their fans were heavily into psychedelics. I’ve seen them many times since the 80s, all over the country. They are one of my favorite bands.
When I was 20 (late 80's) I saw them live upstate NY. Life changing. "Blind Eye See All" DVD and YT clips will show you what a live show was like in the late 80's.
Electronic Larryland and The Weird Revolution are all weird songs like this. I can't get into they're early stuff, but these last two albums before they broke up are amazing
Gibby , King Coffee, and Mr Leary make Me proud to be a Texan! I was actually at a Butthole Surfers concert in Austin, where a dude jumped up on the stage, grabbed the mic from Gibbys’ hand , and yelled :” MY TONGUE IS A BUTT HOLE SURFER!”
Growing up Gen X, we were constantly being told the world was ending. The Cold war was still on, so there was the constant threat of nuclear war. There were environmental crisis's, financial crisis's, and political crisis's. As adults we made nihilistic music.
This song is about people they knew who died. The early stuff if even more twisted, i.e. "Bar-B-Pope", "22 Going on 23", etc. The lead singer had another band which featured Johnny Depp on bass( band was called P). They played at The Viper Club the night that River Phoenix died.
For a more upbeat song about people who died, try “All the People Who Died” by the Jim Carrol Band. That’s the same Jim Carrol that wrote the Basketball Diaries.
Hey what's up guys! Greetings from South Florida! Way back in the day, I was in a Metal band called Vengenz. And we hung out with this Punk band called The F Boys. Their lead singer got me into this band. This band is just crazy, I love it! You guys rock! God bless you! Peace!

This is why they started using the classification Alternative Rock. Rock music spread in so many different directions, not everything could be put into a box
The visual images Lex plaints of actually surfing a butthole made an awesome segue into the song.....which paints enough strange visual images on its own!
I’ve seen this band around 15 times. This is like a kinda like a G rated song of theirs. They have a ton of albums. They were around for a long time. This was their only hit. Some other recommendations are human cannonball, who was in my room last night, anything from the Hairway to Steven album and Anything from Locust Abortion Technician. One year they had a stripper with them on tour that used to take her clothes off and she had these metal teeth. I'm sorry, but I can't hear this without hearing that clip from the Simpsons where the Flanders' lose their house and everybody "helps" them out: "Hey look Dad, I'm a surfer!"
Acid Rock with noise … this song remember my teenhood… other strange song of the 90s Hobohumpinslobo babe of The band Whale. Lex enjoy really good the song
If you didn't get your fill of song that basically just lists names, check out: "People Who Died" by The Jim Carroll Band "88 Lines About 44 Women" by The Nails "Good Luck Chuck" by the Dandy Warhols
I saw the BH Surfers at Lolapalooza a long, long time ago (same show I saw Ice-T and Bodycount). The only thing I really remember is Gibby coming out on stage with a pump shotgun. He started firing it, evidently they were blanks. But yeah, it was pretty crazy.
A similar song that came out years before was People Who Died by musician, port , wrter Jim Carrol. The movie Basketball Diaries was about his life. Pretty much what the song is about
I seriously thought Brad's head was gonna spin around, like in The Exorcist, trying to figure out this song! Oh, and Brad, you're right, we are looking at Lex. We love ya brother, but you don't look like Lex does! ☺👍
It’s interesting to see people try to come to terms with this song, for when it came out, I just accepted it as another cool song. Also, watching your reaction here reminded me of another cool song about death: People Who Died by Jim Carroll Band. I be interested in your reaction to that.
You're one of my favorite reaction channels -- if not my favorite. (There are a handful of ones I like a lot, but you're the only one I make sure I check out every day. Ha) Either way, for something different and very cool: try the band "Avett Brothers" and, maybe, the following songs: 1. Murder in the City 2. Live and Die 3. Head Full Of Doubt/Road Full Of Promise 4. No Hard Feelings Just some ideas. Something fresh, interesting, and very well-done. Some of the best song-writing around.
Yup they have more songs! One of my favs of all time is "Who was in my Room Last Night" One of the best guitar riffs ever conceived. You just cant play it without donning a proper stink face and rock guitar stance.
One of my very favorite bands!!! They got their name from a heckle. They used to be called The Hugh Beaumont Experience (named after the actor who played the father on the Leave It To Beaver TV show). They were playing a show and someone called them butthole surfters and they decided that was a much better name.
The closest song to this (musically) that I can recall from the Butthole Surfers is “The Shame of Life”, though their early material was FAR more bizarre. They started as a kind of psychedelic-noise-punk band, but this song in particular (“Pepper”) marked the beginning of their more generic radio-friendly alternative rock sound. I STRONGLY recommend “Who Was In My Room Last Night?” or even “Cherub” for a taste of the Buttholes at their most certifiably insane. lol
@@KelsaRavenlock, I’m tempted to tell them to watch the entirety of the ‘Blind Eye Sees All’ video, but there’s no way they’d make it past “The Shah Sleeps in Lee Harvey’s Grave”. LMFAO
To be honest I have never actually found a person willing to listen to a whole song by them from the early days, not even the rare Butthole/Beasitie clip from the public access New York music show will get them to try. Well not 100% true as in the 80's and early 90's I knew fans, but after the "Hairway to Steven" album got radio play they fell off the map a bit.
I remember in middle school having all these alternative bands written on my jansport backpack,in hindsight having butthole surfers on there might not have been the best idea 😆
“You never know just how you look thru other people’s eyes” is the lyric that resonates for sure.

Y'all are great reactors and look good @ the same time. Seriously.
Butthole Surfer's were not just a band. They were an entire Collective of Artists.
Awesome, Butthole Surfers!! Welcome to stoner rock.
Their music covers a WIDE variety of styles.
I'm sorry, but I can't hear this without hearing that clip from the Simpsons where the Flanders' lose their house and everybody "helps" them out: "Hey look Dad, I'm a surfer!"
Definitely watch because of both of you. You guys both bring something different and seem genuinely like good people.
Acid Rock with noise … this song remember my teenhood… other strange song of the 90s Hobohumpinslobo babe of The band Whale. Lex enjoy really good the song
I always considered it as a Tribute to people who they have known who have died. A similar concept would be Jim Carrol's "People Who Died".
If you didn't get your fill of song that basically just lists names, check out:
"People Who Died" by The Jim Carroll Band
"88 Lines About 44 Women" by The Nails
"Good Luck Chuck" by the Dandy Warhols
When lex asked imagine surfing on a butthole I think we are on the same wavelength
One of my most favorite bands. Inspired Kurt Cobain.
They have a great cover of "Hurdy Gurdy Man", originally by Donovan (1968).
It’s interesting to see people try to come to terms with this song, for when it came out, I just accepted it as another cool song.
Also, watching your reaction here reminded me of another cool song about death: People Who Died by Jim Carroll Band. I be interested in your reaction to that.
People Who Died by The Jim Carroll Band is a great punk song from 1980!
I was just thinking about that song and couldn't remember the artist , thanks !
tru...Jim Carroll was a special band... Catholic Boy.. what an album!!!
And Eddie I miss more than all the others! And I salute you brother!!!
The outro, and the guitar solo, is the best part of the song. Great track.
You're one of my favorite reaction channels -- if not my favorite. (There are a handful of ones I like a lot, but you're the only one I make sure I check out every day. Ha) Either way, for something different and very cool: try the band "Avett Brothers" and, maybe, the following songs:
1. Murder in the City
2. Live and Die
3. Head Full Of Doubt/Road Full Of Promise
4. No Hard Feelings
Just some ideas. Something fresh, interesting, and very well-done. Some of the best song-writing around.
Who was in My Room Last Night is the song to hear by these guys. Actually almost any song off Independent Worm Solon 🪱
Yup they have more songs!
One of my favs of all time is "Who was in my Room Last Night" One of the best guitar riffs ever conceived. You just cant play it without donning a proper stink face and rock guitar stance.
This song is quintessentially 90's up there with Cake and Sublime and those bands you said, big time radio and video hits.
I STRONGLY recommend “Who Was In My Room Last Night?” or even “Cherub” for a taste of the Buttholes at their most certifiably insane. lol
Cherub or Lady Sniff would make them burn down their house and run away screaming.
@@KelsaRavenlock IIRC, Gibby has his own podcast/radio show in Texas, but idk if the full band still tours.
@@mourningwoodward I haven't seen them live in decades . My last show was so long ago the Surf Punks and Untouchables were on the same bill.
I remember in middle school having all these alternative bands written on my jansport backpack,in hindsight having butthole surfers on there might not have been the best idea 😆
Seen in Dallas many times great vibes
