Couple of corrections. Star Wars Episode I Racer was just 2 players, not 4. Stunt GP was developed by Team 17 and published/distributed by Halifax and Eon Digital Entertainment. I had it backwards in the segment. Little errors like these tend to slip past me when doing larger videos. I'll work harder in the future to catch em.

Don't beat yourself up too hard, although I'm the same way. Dude! you provide unique content, that's always consistent, and I can tell it's a labor of love. I bet it was exhausting playing these bargain bin games just to have something to feed to your capture card and we all appreciate the time you put in! Your videos bring me back to a time when if you wanted to play an arcade game at home you had to get the port for whatever console you happened to have, with lots of give and take. sadly that wont happen, not only is Looney Tunes struggling for popularity right now, but characters like Pepe Le Pew have been cancelled by cancel culture, as long as we have people being like that towards something as innocent as Looney Tunes, such a thing will never take place.

I mean I remember people were really sick of the "cell shaded aesthetic" after the Dreamcast and yet I would say that style was one of the biggest things that has made space race hold up to this day.

@@UltimateGamerCC What's really sad is that they took games that had that aesthetic and took that aesthetic away for releases on say PS2 or whatever. And many times it would take away the single cool thing that it had when it was on the Dreamcast. I mean I thought cell shading was a brilliant move that really gave games much more appeal especially with consoles that didn't quite have the power to render things more realistically. Of course we've actually seen how flipping people are with something like XIII where they took the cool art style and completely botched it in the remake. That is especially interesting considering how divisive that game was and it's look back in the day and how much people love it now. Again 20 years later and people have flip flopped completely as far as their attitude. It's like how people couldn't stand 2D games and then suddenly around halfway through the 2000s it had a huge resurgence.
@@RavenShinyThings I looked at a side by side comparison on a different UA-cam channel. The Dreamcast and N64 does appear to be using the exact same 3D models for tacks and cars. But the effects, textures and lighting makes a world of difference. With that said, its a fairly impressive N64 game even if it looks and runs like crap.
The arcade hardware for Rush was a lot more similar to the Dreamcast's hardware than the N64. The arcade board was the Atari Flagstaff, based around 3dfx hardware. I bet it was based off the arcade code. N64 hardware was weird.
@@mattuw82 I looked at footage of the Arcade as well. It seems like the tracks are bigger and there is more detail. At a glance though, the Dreamcast version isn't far behind. I guess it was just less work to improve the N64 version than give Dreamcast a real arcade port. Hydro Thunder is also an interesting game to look at because it seems like all the consoles are essentially running the same engine and similar 3D assets. But there are varying compromises, Dreamcast looking most similar to the arcade. I was surprised to see PS1 actually got a great port.
Rush 2049 on the Dreamcast was one of the most popular multiplayer games at my house. We got tired of racing, but the stunt and even battle modes are always fun to play and get crazy with.

The stunt tracks in San Francisco Rush 2049, in multiplayer, with the largest wings, was endless amounts of fun for us. You didn't show the wings! I miss my Dreamcast. It deserved, and was capable of so much more
If Ep. 1 Racer seems too easy and un-loseable for anyone at first, I'd recommend you at least play until you get to the second circuit. There's a pretty big difficulty spike right off the bat and it actually turns into a real competition.
I wasn't aware that the Dreamcast had so many unconventional racing games. My favorite in the list was Wacky Racers, as someone who loved the show it was a good surprise, at that time classical TV series didn't have games released years after they were over.
The first game I bought for the Dreamcast was SW E1 Racer, and I absolutely loved the visuals, handling, and music! Years later, and I'm still playing this gem via emulation, and even now, I'm impressed.
@@mistamontiel00 It was a port of the PC version of the game. It's an improvement in some areas on the N64 original and still plays surprisingly well. Think the problem was we all wanted Sega's arcade SW Pod Racing game but we got this conversion instead. I'd recommend it though

What I love about this channel is both the lack of ads and e-begging, but also the casual discussion of these forgotten games for what is otherwise forgotten consoles in today's modern life. Okay, can we talk about how good that Looney Tunes game fucking looks? For a split second, when Foghorn Leghorn showed up, I thought it was 2D. It was brief before I realized it was a 3D model, but still way better looking than most games based off cartoons.
I vastly preferred Looney Tunes Space Race to any Mario Kart or Crash Bandicoot or PAC-Man Racing game available around that time. Absolutely underappreciated Dreamcast gem.
So many fun games mentioned here. South Park Rally is my favorite cart racing game, Demolition racer and Rush 2049 were stupid fun, and Trickstyle was a surprisingly great playthrough experience for me.
I never played Trickstyle but I'm going to check it out. When I saw it in this video it looks really fun. I like that hoverboard effect. And yeah Demolition Racer is an awesome game. A lot more depth than the original Demolition Derby on PS1.
Looney Tunes Space Race is definitely my favorite racer on the Sega Dreamcast. The cel-shaded graphics were spot-on for a bouncy and cartoony kart-racer, and don't get me started on the amazing Dreamcast OST of the game cause it rocks!
As a big revolt fan, i feel you should have mentioned that the dreamcast version of revolt has additional content. Its one of the best versions of the game.
Toy racer was made in 4 months to promote online gaming, Sega asked No Cliché to produce the game as quick as possible, this is why it's simple, using the assets from Toy comander. It was sold for cheap at that time, around 10 euros, again, to promote the online. No cliché was working on Agartha at that time.
well, there's no way he's gonna talk abou- 15:55 oh my god... *_OH MY GOD, SOUND THE ALARMS EVERYONE HE'S TALKING ABOUT THE THING!_* A couple things to note about it are that you are actually one of the first reviewers i've seen that actually gets the whole "the PC / Dreamcast versions were released at similar times, but aren't the same games" thing correct, i have seen SO many people get mixed up thinking the dreamcast version came out in 2001 or the PS2 version came out in 2000 both developed by appaloosa. and another thing to note is that the PS2 version is a completely diffrent beast to the dreamcast version, so maybe give that a look some day.
I absolutely love Sno Cross on the Dreamcast, one of my favourite racers. It can be difficult to control at first but once you get the hang of it, there's a lot of fun to be had!

when i had the Dreamcast that's when i got to play Star Wars Episode 1 Racer and i loved the hell out of it, i think where you went wrong was believing that it would've gotten a graphical overhaul being ported to a more powerful system, in reality that didnt really happen in the good old days all that often.

“Untouched ports from lower spec machines” is the glass half empty way of looking at it. I prefer to think of those games as “the best version of previous gen games”. As pretty much all of them ran at much smoother frame rates on the Dreamcast. 5th gen is where stable frame rates go to die, haha.
This was a great summary of the wacky racing games on the Dreamcast. Even with its short life span, the Dreamcast had quite a host of games. Though, yeah, a number of games in its library were upscaled ports from the PS1 or N64. Some of these racers actually look pretty fun! I don't know if Sega Lord X has done it already, but is there a chance of summarizing lesser known platformers on the Dreamcast? I'm not sure there were a lot of them but I remember random ones like Super Magnetic Neo, Kao the Kangaroo, and Floigan Bros. I am curious to see if any still hold up now.
Nice to hear that revisiting PenPen TriIcelon with your daughter helped you to appreciate it more. It's an underrated game, in my opinion. I love how different each style of race segment feels, and that world designs are...interesting, to say the least. XD
Trickstyle is one of the best racing games on the Sega Dreamcast. It's a shame, that we never saw sequels to Trickstyle and other games. I still have a few demo discs, with some of the games you've showed.
We had the Re-Volt demo installed on every PC in my school's computer lab, allowing us to have huge multiplayer sessions all the way back in the early 2000's.
Destruction Derby 2 on the PS1 is one of the absolute best demolition derby games ever made and it would've been awesome if they had ported that to the Dreamcast and updated it a little like they did Demolition Racer.
Did play it on win95. But last year I tried the PlayStation version and found it brutal difficult. Don't know if it's the reason from inputlag of the emulator. I couldn't catch the opponent's on a race

Looney Tunes Space Race and Wacky Races are awesome racing games, I especially loved trying to find all the shortcuts in Wacky Races. I spent countless hours with my friends playing these games.
Oh man, I put so much time into trickstyle. Even just goofing around in the hub area, trying out tricks. Way more forgiving than THPS, though obviously less intricate. Still, so much fun!
I really liked Demolition Racer but the graphics on Dreamcast looked so dark and dirty that it was ridiculous, pretty much the opposite of the other racers I liked on the console.
I'd also like to comment that Rush 2049 has an impressive amount of unlockables, tons of coins to collect in practice "exploration" modes, tons of Stunt tracks, and an impressive vs multiplayer mode, and it runs amazingly good if not better than the arcade release. It's one of the "last good" Midway games to me from the generation that came from arcades, Cruis'n, MK, Hydro Thunder and so on. Also, Wacky Racers is an amazing Diddy Kong Racing clone, the hubworld is pretty good.
hydro thunder, havent seen that in forever. i remember the cab at funtime had insane bass in the headrest. like u were sitting on a big block chevy, it was great.
My top 3 favorite Oddball Racing Games on Dreamcast: 1- Looney Tunes Space Race. 2- Star Wars Episode 1 Racer. 3- San Francisco Rush 2049. And i did enjoy Demolition Racer: No Exit, despite its simple graphics (great music too). Come to think of it, Dreamcast had a lot of racing games and almost something for everyone. Huge recommendation for the movies Taxi and Taxi 2. Taxi 3 is just bad, while the next one shouldn't be named ever, but the first two movies are hilarious action comedies, probably my personal favourites in the genre.
I'm on the opposite side. The nostalgia didn't hit me as many other 90's French comedy movies. And retrospectively, Taxi is really the confirmation of Luc Besson's decades-old downhill (started with the hollywoodesque Fifth Element).

Then it ran on TV God knows how many times over here, I used to have the VHS, so I'm not as much nostalgic as I am a fan. I loved playing my buddies in Pen Pen when my friend imported a dreamcast from Japan a year before the US version came out. I was damn near unbeatable it was so fun practicing the perfect timing on your buttons presses.
Please please, please I can not overstate how amazing rush 2049 is!! If you are with 3,or 4 players you can do a battle mode in specially made levels! This is the greatest multiplayer action in any game ever! I still play this with friends multiple times a year, now more than 20 years later! Much better than twisted metal, or vigilante because of its quick arcade action and quick kills and score system.
Dreamcast Rush 2049 was great. My dad , brother and I used to play the battle mode for hours. There was even a port years later to GameCube that we were able to relive those times
I bought pen pen when I imported my launch day dreamcast from Japan along with Virtua fighter 3tb, sonic adventure and godzilla. To this day, I think its one of the most fun multilayer games.
Fun fact about Re-Volt. It came out on the original Xbox… sort of. It was online-only, and part of the pre-release Xbox Live beta test in 2002. It was well done, and I kept playing it with other beta testers until the servers eventually were taken down. I don’t know why it never had a proper release, I would have bought it in a heartbeat!
I didn’t even know pods sequel came out on it? The original was shipped (I’m English so I wouldn’t know about the US )with every graphics card on the pc going over here so it’s probably classed as a ‘big seller’. It was sort of released(sorry if you know all this), right on the cusp of internal to 3d cards. I mean that stage when you could select ugly old graphics or your fancy pants new toy graphics card ones ! I love your videos. Keep ‘em coming!
I love it so much when you make Dreamcast videos. South park racing is my favorite but the PC version is just so much better. Still, really fun. Was literally playing it the other night.
The thing about toy racer is it was an online game. I think it was the only online racing game in Europe. I had a good time playing it the weekend it came out and it only cost a fiver. There were a lot of people playing so it was easy to find opponents in the servers.
Rush 2049 was one of the 1st 2 games I got with my Dreamcast. I'd suggest you re visit it. There is a lot more to talk about. You didn't even mention the amazing battle and stunt modes. Also the fact that each track is basically an open world map you can explore to find coins and unlock new cars.
There is so much to do in that game and it really shines when you've got 4 people playing. I had to pick up on PS2 midway arcade treasures 3 when it came out.

I tried to get into Trickstyle. Loved the idea but I couldn't get the hang of it. Racing games on the Dreamcast were always difficult imo. That crappy analog stick played hell trying to not slip off it. Speed Devils is another that i liked tho. Races were too long but it played well.
I realised I've been playing too many Japanese imports when I heard the title Demolition Racer No Exit and immediately thought of the no particle (の) from Japanese grammar.
The race was tight to know which racer to throw on my DREAMCAST MINI outside Crazy Taxi. 3rd Party develloppers were no good in showcasing the Sega brand in a genre they previously mastered with such arcade sensations as Super Monaco GP, Hang On or Out-Run. It was therefore granted that Yu Suzuki would secure that conveited one spot in the 20 games of the Mini. In all honesty, Ferrari F355 Challenge deserved to be crowned, over Sega's Gran Turismo and Sega Rally. Ferrari F355 Passionne Rosso keeps its promesses. This jewel was crafted with passion. It looks superb and gives you this great arcade feel all Sega fans are craving for, and don't get in the popular muddy Rally simulation. There's magic in this gorgeous Ferrari game, as there was magic in Shenmue. Yu Suzuki is simply the greatest engeneer in the industry. Nevermind the Ferrari licence THIS is the one racer for the Dreamcast Mini.
Episode 1 Racer is a classic. There's a reason why it's been ported to PS4 along with the sequel. Fast, simple gameplay, great music, upgrades and progression, interesting tracks... and did I mention speed???

If the Dreamcast version of Rush 2049 is based on the N64 version, they did an amazing job improving it. Kinda like Tony Hawk 1 and 2.

As a big revolt fan, i feel you should have mentioned that the dreamcast version of revolt has additional content. Its one of the best versions of the game.
But PC version is better coz it's in Fans hand now.
Try RVGL, it's a modern port of the game and also features de DC extras.

Toy racer was made in 4 months to promote online gaming, Sega asked No Cliché to produce the game as quick as possible, this is why it's simple, using the assets from Toy comander. It was sold for cheap at that time, around 10 euros, again, to promote the online. No cliché was working on Agartha at that time.

A couple things to note about it are that you are actually one of the first reviewers i've seen that actually gets the whole "the PC / Dreamcast versions were released at similar times, but aren't the same games" thing correct, i have seen SO many people get mixed up thinking the dreamcast version came out in 2001 or the PS2 version came out in 2000 both developed by appaloosa. and another thing to note is that the PS2 version is a completely diffrent beast to the dreamcast version, so maybe give that a look some day.
Yes! X, you've got the Genesis and Saturn pretty well covered, but there's a ton of interesting stuff on the Dreamcast you should give us a look at.

I absolutely love Sno Cross on the Dreamcast, one of my favourite racers. It can be difficult to control at first but once you get the hang of it, there's a lot of fun to be had!

I bought Trickstyle with my Dreamcast shortly after launch. I adored that game. Going back to it now though… the years haven’t been kind to it!
when i had the Dreamcast that's when i got to play Star Wars Episode 1 Racer and i loved the hell out of it, i think where you went wrong was believing that it would've gotten a graphical overhaul being ported to a more powerful system, in reality that didnt really happen in the good old days all that often.
I never played the n64 version but i have fond memories of the game. I thought it looked great back in the day lol
@@maxpower10k yeah i didnt mind the graphics, i mean i imagine that they couldnt have made the graphics any better without sacrificing the frame rate anyway.
“Untouched ports from lower spec machines” is the glass half empty way of looking at it. I prefer to think of those games as “the best version of previous gen games”. As pretty much all of them ran at much smoother frame rates on the Dreamcast. 5th gen is where stable frame rates go to die, haha.
Wow those graphics on the Loony Tunes game have barley aged! You could tell me that was a fairly recent release and I’d nod and smile.

This was a great summary of the wacky racing games on the Dreamcast. Even with its short life span, the Dreamcast had quite a host of games. Though, yeah, a number of games in its library were upscaled ports from the PS1 or N64. Some of these racers actually look pretty fun!
I don't know if Sega Lord X has done it already, but is there a chance of summarizing lesser known platformers on the Dreamcast? I'm not sure there were a lot of them but I remember random ones like Super Magnetic Neo, Kao the Kangaroo, and Floigan Bros. I am curious to see if any still hold up now.

I love Pen Pen Trilecelon. It’s not a great game, but it just screams “Dreamcast.” No one will ever mistake it for a cheap PlayStation port.

Trickstyle is one of the best racing games on the Sega Dreamcast.
It's a shame, that we never saw sequels to Trickstyle and other games.
I still have a few demo discs, with some of the games you've showed.
Airblade on PS2 is basically a sequel to Trickstyle
When I got my dreamcast for Christmas the 2 games I got with it that day were Trickstyle and Sonic Adventure. I agree! The races were really good.
Man I loved PenPen when I was a kid, easily got the most playtime out of all my multiplayer games.
Revolt was one of my favorite racers. Ever. The look. The feel. The tracks. It was NES RC Pro Am all grown up
We had the Re-Volt demo installed on every PC in my school's computer lab, allowing us to have huge multiplayer sessions all the way back in the early 2000's.
Destruction Derby 2 on the PS1 is one of the absolute best demolition derby games ever made and it would've been awesome if they had ported that to the Dreamcast and updated it a little like they did Demolition Racer.
Did play it on win95. But last year I tried the PlayStation version and found it brutal difficult.
Don't know if it's the reason from inputlag of the emulator. I couldn't catch the opponent's on a race

Great video! I really enjoy these looks at more obscure games. One correction I think I have is that Star Wars Episode I Racer only had 2 player splitscreen on the Dreamcast rather than the 4 suggested at 13:39.
Looney Tunes Space Race and Wacky Races are awesome racing games, I especially loved trying to find all the shortcuts in Wacky Races. I spent countless hours with my friends playing these games.

Oh man, I put so much time into trickstyle. Even just goofing around in the hub area, trying out tricks. Way more forgiving than THPS, though obviously less intricate. Still, so much fun!
I really liked Demolition Racer but the graphics on Dreamcast looked so dark and dirty that it was ridiculous, pretty much the opposite of the other racers I liked on the console.
I played the demo so much lol. I actually like the weird handling.
This is why I will always consider the Dreamcast a 5th generation console. Great video as always.

I'd also like to comment that Rush 2049 has an impressive amount of unlockables, tons of coins to collect in practice "exploration" modes, tons of Stunt tracks, and an impressive vs multiplayer mode, and it runs amazingly good if not better than the arcade release.
It's one of the "last good" Midway games to me from the generation that came from arcades, Cruis'n, MK, Hydro Thunder and so on.
Also, Wacky Racers is an amazing Diddy Kong Racing clone, the hubworld is pretty good.

hydro thunder, havent seen that in forever. i remember the cab at funtime had insane bass in the headrest. like u were sitting on a big block chevy, it was great.
My top 3 favorite Oddball Racing Games on Dreamcast: 1- Looney Tunes Space Race. 2- Star Wars Episode 1 Racer. 3- San Francisco Rush 2049. And i did enjoy Demolition Racer: No Exit, despite its simple graphics (great music too). Come to think of it, Dreamcast had a lot of racing games and almost something for everyone. Thanks for making this vid!

Huge recommendation for the movies Taxi and Taxi 2. Taxi 3 is just bad, while the next one shouldn't be named ever, but the first two movies are hilarious action comedies, probably my personal favourites in the genre.
I'm on the opposite side. The nostalgia didn't hit me as many other 90's French comedy movies. And retrospectively, Taxi is really the confirmation of Luc Besson's decades-old downhill (started with the hollywoodesque Fifth Element).
@@PainterVierax Nostalgia didn't really hit me that much either, I've wetched it in the cinema first. Then it ran on TV God knows how many times over here, I used to have the VHS, so I'm not as much nostalgic as I am a fan. Still, not a complete zealot to consider 3rd film any good (or completely brain dead to have any kind of positive sentiment towards the 4th installment).

I loved playing my buddies in Pen Pen when my friend imported a dreamcast from Japan a year before the US version came out. I was damn near unbeatable it was so fun practicing the perfect timing on your buttons presses.
SW:Racer is my go to dreamcast game let alone racing,The two games that made me get a Dc was HotD 2 and SW:Racer

These games (among many others) made the DC look like two N64s with two expansion packs taped together.
Trickstyle was one of my first 2 Dreamcast games in 1999. Fun game truly.

Please please, please I can not overstate how amazing rush 2049 is!! If you are with 3,or 4 players you can do a battle mode in specially made levels! This is the greatest multiplayer action in any game ever! I still play this with friends multiple times a year, now more than 20 years later! Much better than twisted metal, or vigilante because of its quick arcade action and quick kills and score system.
I always wanted that WaveRunner port on the Saturn or the Dreamcast....
Dreamcast Rush 2049 was great. My dad , brother and I used to play the battle mode for hours. There was even a port years later to GameCube that we were able to relive those times
I bought pen pen when I imported my launch day dreamcast from Japan along with Virtua fighter 3tb, sonic adventure and godzilla. To this day, I think its one of the most fun multilayer games.
Awesome video. The DC is my 2nd fav console of all time, but I haven't heard of many of these titles. Unique video. Love racers like MK 64 and F-Zero.
Fun fact about Re-Volt. It came out on the original Xbox… sort of. It was online-only, and part of the pre-release Xbox Live beta test in 2002. It was well done, and I kept playing it with other beta testers until the servers eventually were taken down. I don’t know why it never had a proper release, I would have bought it in a heartbeat!

I didn’t even know pods sequel came out on it? The original was shipped (I’m English so I wouldn’t know about the US )with every graphics card on the pc going over here so it’s probably classed as a ‘big seller’. It was sort of released(sorry if you know all this), right on the cusp of internal to 3d cards. I mean that stage when you could select ugly old graphics or your fancy pants new toy graphics card ones ! I love your videos. Keep ‘em coming!

A Dreamcast version for Woody Woodpecker Racing was originally scheduled to release on April 3, 2001 but was cancelled at the last minute.

The thing about toy racer is it was an online game. I think it was the only online racing game in Europe. I had a good time playing it the weekend it came out and it only cost a fiver. There were a lot of people playing so it was easy to find opponents in the servers.
Rush 2049 was one of the 1st 2 games I got with my Dreamcast. I'd suggest you re visit it. There is a lot more to talk about. You didn't even mention the amazing battle and stunt modes. Also the fact that each track is basically an open world map you can explore to find coins and unlock new cars.
The rush series was one of my favorites.
It's so sad that it died alongside Midway and WB has now intention it seems of resurrecting it's in any form.
Rush 2049 is my favorite DC game!!
There is so much to do in that game and it really shines when you've got 4 people playing. I had to pick up on PS2 midway arcade treasures 3 when it came out.

It was a fitting send off for a company that wasn't long for this world. I'd love a collection of the rush games to come out these days but like I said WB doesn't seem to see any points in it so I'm not holding my breath.

Rush 2049 was one our most-played games on the Dreamcast. That 4 player action in racing, stunt, and especially battle modes are top notch!

I tried to get into Trickstyle. Loved the idea but I couldn't get the hang of it. Racing games on the Dreamcast were always difficult imo. That crappy analog stick played hell trying to not slip off it. Speed Devils is another that i liked tho. Races were too long but it played well.

Space Race was a hidden gem, in terms of non-Nintendo kart racers out and about at the time, fit the bill nicely on the DC.
What I liked about Looney Tunes Space Race was Wile Coyote holding up signs like "OUCH!" after he fell a great height and got put back on the track.
wacky races was also ported to the gbc with a really clever pseudo 3d engine. worth checking out
The race was tight to know which racer to throw on my DREAMCAST MINI outside Crazy Taxi. 3rd Party develloppers were no good in showcasing the Sega brand in a genre they previously mastered with such arcade sensations as Super Monaco GP, Hang On or Out-Run. It was therefore granted that Yu Suzuki would secure that conveited one spot in the 20 games of the Mini. In all honesty, Ferrari F355 Challenge deserved to be crowned, over Sega's Gran Turismo and Sega Rally. Ferrari F355 Passionne Rosso keeps its promesses. This jewel was crafted with passion. It looks superb and gives you this great arcade feel all Sega fans are craving for, and don't get in the popular muddy Rally simulation. There's magic in this gorgeous Ferrari game, as there was magic in Shenmue. Yu Suzuki is simply the greatest engeneer in the industry. Nevermind the Ferrari licence THIS is the one racer for the Dreamcast Mini.
Wacky Races was also availble on Gameboy Colour this was the first game I demoed on a in store console in the uk on the Dreamcast.

Episode 1 Racer is a classic. There's a reason why it's been ported to PS4 along with the sequel. Fast, simple gameplay, great music, upgrades and progression, interesting tracks... and did I mention speed???
