So very true. We don't value value anything very much these days- we've become a through-away culture. I've got a 30 year old Land Rover and a 57 year old MGB Roadster sitting in my garage and those two beauties look, sound and even smell wonderful. Nothing modern comes close to them.

@@user-bh4rx8mf8g I've got a 59 year old MOULTON bicycle, (I.e. 1964) Unlike most bikes, it's got 2 carriers, one over the front wheel, one over the back wheel! I'm going to get it electrified, so the motor will sit on the front carrier, and I'll still be able to use the back one to carry things!

So nice to know that Red Riley, CFJ 900C, is still on the road today.
My parents had a Wolseley Hornet MkIII alongside a Vauxhall Nova when I was born, it's sat in the garage since 1993 and I'm determined to get it out and running again.
Really good condition paintwork as it had some rust work and a respray done not long before it was stored.

Saw this message quite late.My parents bought a 1967 Wolseley Hornet Mk111 in 1970 for £430 on hire purchase.Used by my dad died just about to drive home in it from his place of work in 1973, mum kept it out of memory to him and used it sparingly until she died in 1994.I finally and rather reluctantly decided to sell it in 2015, and was driven to her new home in Belgium .I recall leading the new owner towards the right road to Harwich and waved him by as he then knew the way .I must admit I shed a tear as she passed into the distance, never to be seen again.Cannot imagine this happening to any modern car !.

I can't see why John Peel said the ANGLIA was a Woman's car! Perhaps Ford envisioned it as such, but EVERYONE likes them, even now! A male friend of mine was a man. (Now There's a novelty!) And HE had one. But he admittedly "b u t c h e d it up" by fitting wide sports wheels, and h o t t e d it up by making the engine more powerful! I PERSINALLY like the ELF and HORNET model, when other men have fitted those with wheel arch extensions, with sports w h e e l s , and competed them at race circuits!

The lady who was reunited with her Anglia, is NOT the only person that kissed her car! In the 1980's, I finally bought my lifetime dream car, a Karmann-Ghia, the second, (Very rare ) Corvair - style model, known as the TYPE34. When I had had it for 6 months, it began to sink in that I was finally an owner of one, and I kissed it on the roof, and said : " MINE, ALL MINE!"

Lovely stories both. I have a British cár since 1 year. It is a 2006 *Jaguar S Type* . Interior cream color and body dark blue, midnight blue pearled. I am so happy with it! I feel as a richman driving his car in a castle of any county of England. But I am writing from Santiago, capital of Chile, SouthAmerica. It is my car number 25, I had a 2010 Ford Mustang and 2015 VW Beetle between several other cars,. Well, my Jaguar has been my toy most luxury ever. In fact I feel as driveing a Rolls Royce Phantom, but it's a Jaguar, a marvelous car same can be a RR. I understand so well those ladies owners of an Anglia and that rare luxury Mini.
    Thank you for reading me.
PD: in my country Austin mini and MG were manufactured in Chile early 70s, made of fiber glass material.

My late mother's best friend had a brand new Anglia and took me for a drive the first day she got it…I managed to break the door mechanism somehow.
I’m not sure many non Brits will understand the British sentimentality about cars that could only do 60 going over a cliff with a strong wind behind them. We're a strange bunch, the Americans like muscle cars, the Italians like chic sports cars, the Germans perfect engineering and the British like slow cars that a little boy can break the door of on its first day out of the showroom.
Narrated by the great late John Peel, I thought I recognised the voice.

My father and a work colleague actually designed the original concept for the Elf /Hornet shortly after the original introduction of the Mini. They felt that although the Mini was a brilliant design, it did lack stowage space for suitcases etc. so built a mock-up and submitted their design to headquarters at Abingdon, who showed an interest. Production soon followed but no credit was given to the lads.

I am an octogenarian old codger. I drove my first car before I was 15. It was an Army Jeep. I had no training, only observation ...I drove it to my aunt and drove back at midnight with no traffic. Instead of chastising me, my father handed me over to our cantankerous, retired Army Sergeant Major ''Shut up'' / Windsor Davies ... tye ...At the High School, instead of chasing girls, I studied and played with cars ....I was the first among my friends who changed Carbon Leads to solid copper ... no starting problems in the morning ... During my Uni days, we, took a Ford Anglia and fitted it with a Jaguar 3.8 and raced it after midnight. It could not have been registered. We were caught and were penalized ... I, very nearly, lost my driving licence. the car was dismantled ...Yes, those were the days ... Now, I have 2 cars: SAAB 9-5 2.3t Vector and a BMW 750il V12 (E38 / 5.4l).that I drive in Europe ...During my lifetime I owned and driven 4 big cars: a Mercedes 300 SEL 6.9, an ISO Grifo, a Renault Gordini and a VW Karman Ghia ... Technologically, cars of today are far far superior in all respects except that they are all cookie cuttered ...and yes, I did drive but did not own a Riley ...

Nobody really cares about cars now, they are just like washing machines. My mother had two Elf’s, and they were rather good little cars. I suppose she was a typical customer because she said she would never be seen dead in a Ford, and when she died I asked the undertaker what car the hearse would be and he told me, a Ford Grenada. I had to tell him my mother would never be seen dead in one of those so he got a Daimler. We had a good laugh. Totally charming little programme by the way.

It was probably worth the extra hundred or so quid for the Elf. The wood dashboard and the nice leather seats are nice touches, I presume it had nice carpets too. Apart from the snob value, the Elf was a nicer looking cars from the Mini, which although it was a good car was a bit on the plane jane side.

It also had an extra foot and a half or so of boot space, and saloon cars generally had more rigid bodies and more non-passenger areas for crash safety. 100 was quite a lot back then though, and according to sales figures, most chose to save every pound they could.

@@prof.m.ottozeeejcdecs9998 what an amazing idea an ESTATE Riley Elf! We had better get out an envelope and a pen - and start sketching right now! Amazingly, I saw someone has put the front of one (or the equivalent Wolseley Hornet) onto the front of a Mini Van! BEFORE we get the envelopes out, and start sketching on them - a significant fact applies, regarding the total length of the MINI , the MINI ESTATE CAR, and the ELVES/HORNETS. The ELF/HORNET of course actually carry small suitcases in its larger boot, but the fuel tank in the wings of the ELF/ HORNET, and the MINI restricted width in the boot. Not so in the MINI ESTATE, which had the fuel tank under the boot floor! That's because, whilst the ELF/HORNET are a bit longer than the MINI saloon, they aren't actually long enough to put the tank under the floor. BUT THE MINI ESTATE IS LONGER STILL, so it DOES have the tank under It's floor! SO the MINI ESTATE IS LONGER than an Elf could be as an ESTATE. Bear this in mind whilst sketching!
Incidentally, where they made Minis in South Africa, THEY did a WOLSELEY front on a MINI, but no extended boot! NOT so nice!

You can send the rusty Anglia somewhere to Poland and a couple of months later they send *it* back as new as it just would have come off the assembly line. People like the loveley ladies are irreplaceable. This is no objection to keep a classic car - but it is just an item, not much without the history of the people who had it, travelled in it...

There’s a comment at the bottom from her Nephew that says he bought the car back and is now back in the family. She passed away in 2015 at the age of 97.

agree with you there. Do bring some sentimental feelings to anybody watching. Classic cars do have more soul than today's cheap plastic cars.

I liked Doris` story with the Anglia but I`m under the impression that the car was pulled because it failed MoT. ( Inspecition?) I hope not. They`d love to do that here in the US- take all old cars off the road. Love these british classics-they have lots of character, brings back memories of the many europeans that were on the roads here when I was a kid in the 60`s and early `70s. Here, starting in 1968 all cars were mandated to meet specific emissions output. Which probably spelled the end of many european workaday imports by 1973. That and the increased sales of Japanese imports which mechanically were more reliable and also spelled the end of the VW Beetle. After 1980, the MG and the Triumphs were gone.

You have to understand that in order to pass the MOT the car is tested for quite basic safety and maintenance. For example on bad corrosion which could compromise safety, if the tyres are still in good order (enough thread, not dried out), if the exhaust isn't leaking, if the brakes or brake lines are in order, working lights etc. The MOT is essentially a road worthiness exam to see if the car is fit to be driven on the road. Older cars must comply to those standards they were designed for. They don't have to pass modern emissions testing etc. So if an older car is in good order, if it's functioning properly, it'll pass the MOT.

Gem Stealer An MOT failure doesn't mean the car is scrap. It simply means it's not as safe as it should be and needs work. Barn finds that fail on every point can be resurrected. These days much older cars are exempt from the MOT anyway, there is an understanding that classic cars tend to be well looked after and not driven in a dangerous fashion- if anything this means more classic cars will be retained rather than fewer.
