There's this handy little control device you should have that would allow you to strafe easily. Its called a keyboard and I think that's how it was designed to be played. I know some people played Doom I with a mouse (I never did except the brief period when turning couldn't be mapped to the keyboard in the recent Doom I and II combo release) but I don't remember anyone playing this with the mouse in the old days.
I bought all the Wolfenstein games recently, so I tried this version to see what's going on with the controls. Yes, they are extremely awkward. Strafe movement is done by holding down the strafe button while pressing the turn buttons. I think to get standard Doom-style controls, you have to use a source port.
