    If y’all saw the interview with Mikaela after her 94th victory in Flachau, she was extremely emotional and I believe it was largely because Alek was on her mind and the release was overdue.

    Bode Miller almost cut his leg off by a sharp ski in a crash some years ago. I have seen kevlar underwear for downhill racers advertised on various ski apparel sites. Just like helmets now being mandatory, maybe there should be mandatory minimum protect for areas other than what a helmet protects. Pirmin Zubriggen used to race downhill with a helmet that looks like a race car helmet. That would have helped Alex's face look a lot better than it does now.
    As fans we want to see our best skiers succeed and do something that seems impossible, without permanently hurting/killing the athlete. For instance, a freestyle skier doesn't do a complex flip/turn unless they have used mats, ropes, and other devices to protect them when they are first learning to perform that trick.
    Because of races being cancelled at the beginning of the season, they were inserted back into the FIS calendar. There was a SG event, downhill practice, and two downhills at Wengen without a break between events. Even though Alex is one of the strongest and fittest male downhill racers and had a cold which made him weak, he skied all of those days. You could see his legs wobble and buckle in the last two turns of the downhill. Wengen is usually the most taxing event on the DownHill (DH) and Supergiant Slalom (SG) circuit and many skiers were ready to pass out in the finish area. FIS, please change the rules for how many events can be stacked together without a break to recover.

      @MrMarcec85 6 місяців тому +2

      About helmets it is a matter of... "balance of power": a more complex helmet limits breathing and visibility. And it can cause a worst scenario other than a broken nose. Modern helmets and masks protects more and better than 1980's motorcycle helmet and goggles FOR SURE. Maybe they will find something, but there is a reason in using that kind of equipment.

But there are more important things to life sometimes, even when it's about your greatest passion. He shell take the time to recover and when the next olympics come 2026, we will see where the road has taken him till then. 👍

    • @shooter7a
      @shooter7a 6 місяців тому +2

      ...or fatal. After Herman Meier's Nagano crash of 98 the crash fencing at international level events was dramatically improved. Where the real danger exists is at the lower level races, such as junior, national, and even lower level FIS races. They can not afford to put up such extensive crash netting for these races. For example, Max Burkhardt, a 17 year old racer died while racing a Downhill in Lake Louise, Canada on December 7, 2017....

      True. When I was racing in college, we had a couple that had been Europa Cup skiers for Germany, and they showed us a German magazine with photos from an E Cup DH race where someone was torn in half through the middle during a crash. It was horrific!

      @@keirfarnum6811 yep. One of my ski coaches had her career end early from a crash in a Europa Cup. Weeks in the hospital, ended up with a metal plate in her skull, never raced again.

    Aleks is at least a bit lucky. Mikaela bought that nice Vail house in the last couple of years. I would think that would be a very nice place to recuperate. Aleks FYI there is a former ski racer named Marco Tonazzi who used to have a ski shop in Vail. He probably is still around there. He is older than you; but you might enjoy talking to him about ski racing, etc. You are probably both not really competing fiercely at this point.

    The question nobody asks is : Why did he crash? This was not a typical downhill crash. He skied badly from top to bottom,, was over 2 seconds behind at the time if the "" crash " and almost fell on the last minor jump. What did he do the night before?

    • @rideon6140
      @rideon6140 6 місяців тому +5

      Well I don't know about that but there is a video of Bode Miller talking about this last turn to the finish line. Its the end of the longest downhill, legs are shot, the compression on weak legs is so bad one comes close to passing out. Bode says this last turn was for him the toughest in downhill, he usually got tunnel vision from all the blood going to his legs. In that sense it's not a complete surprise.

      I believe that was downhill no. 2 on Wengen . To make up for one of the DH races canceled earlier in the season. The weekend was DH, SuperG, Dh, in fact. And he was reported to be recovering from the flu. Yet he finished second in DH1 and won the SG 🤯 so bad bad luck for him…

    • @isabelitaguiriba5273

      I guess you don’t know that every night before the race they need to draw bib and given that there’s a super G race the day before the crash and he place thirds there’s also an awarding ceremony included and since he’s just recovering from illness(colds) his body and strength must not be the same compared to when he’s fully fit.

      Three Majors in three days is very, very depleting on their "A Game" form. Perhaps why he was asked a "leading question" about course safety, and FIS action.🎉
