Why do you put this at the end of your processing chain? Why not put it at the beginning where subtractive EQ is typically done?

So it’s inverted right ? Raising it raises the amount of cut and vice versa
. Why not use it in the middle of a chain? Why does it have to be at the end of the chain?

Do you think you need to get stems of a beat for a good mix if the beat is already well mixed?

I would say it’s always better to have stems / trackouts when mixing so that you have options, and so that the mixer has more control over the elements. Without access to the trackouts, it may be difficult to make more space for the vocal without affecting all elements of a beat.
Sometimes a mix is fine without them, I’ve mixed plenty of songs using the producers 2-track and things generally sound good. It will greatly depend on how well they mixed the beat. If it’s bad, there’s really no saving it and trackouts are the only way.
Producers don’t always know how to get the most out of their sounds whereas a mixer will. My motto for things like this is “better to have and not need, than need and not have”

@@5piece this helps but how would u create more space for the vocal with stems? would u just turn the melody down or side chain some dynamic bands on the melody? also could you do a video step by step on how to prepare a mix for mastering

Any combination of what you just proposed would work. Truthfully though it starts with arrangement - if you have a busy song with a lot of elements that are in the same frequency range as the vocals, it will be more difficult for them to cut. That's why its its easier to mix more minimalist songs. But that being said, typically its firstly gain staging and setting volume correctly, then its carving out space frequency wise. Dynamics and utilizing the stereo field also come into play.
