Clean carbs and new fuel, mine sat 6 years before this season and runs like new. Wait, no air box? That’s what’s up. It’s not jetted for it at all. Needs a that and a cleaning
It is a clutch bog. Check rollers in the primary as well as the spring. Put new belt on and make sure deflection is set at about 1 1/4" or a hair tighter. Those piston port motors will run like that if clutching is off.
just had the same problem with my tnt over the weekend. she would go but only felt like 60-70 percent power. checked the primary. no spring. it was stuck open. she made it back to camp though. anyone out there have a good used qrs primary for a 2010 mxz?
Fixed my dad's 94 yamaha venture tf with a 151" track! Sat with the carburetors off for 12 years and it runs fantastic. Literally from watching these videos helped me get it done, keep the videos coming
That air box delete mod is robbing your low end power which is a very small amount on the 500s anyways. Seems like it's running to lean from too much airflow. Also check that the primary clutch spring isn't broke. Those 500s gotta rev up pretty high in rpms before engagement or else they will bog like that.
I used to sled back in the late 60's. Now it's a KLR 250. You go through a lot of sleds. Find me a good cheap street bike. I live just down the road from you. Love these video's
I would definitely try and find an airbox, they run better with it. I have a an 87 Traill 488 and I bumped primary engagement up to 4400. It really woke it up out of the hole.
Came to say the same thing the issue might be from the filters an old snowmobile mechanic told me they’re meant to have an air box if they wanted to use filters they would put them on from factory
@@Speedfreak542those "lake filters" are the most cursed garbage anyone can do to a sled. Nothing but problems. Even if you actually tune the sled for them they end up wet and restricted. No matter what you do they will figure out how to create a problem. And why put them on in the first place? Not like it's going to make more power. At least on a factory sled. @@JeremyRhydes I had one same exact sled I recovered the seat and ran her for years it had 15000 miles on it. It did not have reverse but such a great sled
I paid $250 for a parts sled that had a reverse chain case, and the kid threw in a 488 motor he had in has shed..he said he wasn't sure if it ran..best running motor I have out of my 4 indys

I finally got a good deal on a sled last year. 97 trail with extra 10 and studs! It had a melted piston when I got it but I paid $200! Another 200 in parts I guess to do the top end and fuel lines but it's a nice and comfortable ride! The tank was full of five year old gas that smelled like varnish. I kept clogging fuel filters and getting air in the lines so this summer I took the tank off and washed it out and put a new seat cover on and a new fuel pump. Cant wait to ride! STUDS make such a big improvement!! The reason mine was blown up from previous owner was because a mouse made a giant nest inside the fan shroud and it wasn't getting the airflow needed to cool it.
Just picked up two 1996 liquid cooled Indy 500’s for $1200 bucks in NE Ohio. Both run and drive with about 5k miles on each. Got the entire off season to go through them and “make em right”. Love the mid 90’s Polaris sleds.
Had the same problem with the same exact sled this year!!! Did everything, tested everything electrical, all the seals, was the line in the tank collapsing when fuel pump would suck. Found out when it was bogging super bad and dying. Ripped the in-line fuel filter of and blew on the fuel lines and would run fine u til the bowls would drain. It was werid also check if ur fuel link inside the tank fell off
Just the fact that you and Mike had fun riding it was worth the money.. that’s a bad ass project Mike has going on in his garage!! Let’s get a vid on that…
Check secondary clutch and belt deflation. Also think the coil is going bad. They will run good till the coil gets warm then acts like it's fouling a plug. Timing is off when it does that. Check crank seals!
@@baybuoy3843 I believe it. That's impressive mileage for a snowmobile. Those Fuji 488 fan cooled motors are bulletproof. Sometimes makes me question why I mess around with the high horsepower liquid cooled sleds. They're so much less reliable. I had just as much fun on my indy Trail.
I'm sure someone has commented but it definitely sounds like a clutch issue. My 97 500 liquid had a low end bog. Adjusted the secondary and that helped.
488 fans are damn near bulletproof. I bet you it’s in your clutching. Easy to check and easy to fix. Good also, check your air screw on your carburetters too. Sometimes people mess around with things when they shouldn’t. Definitely an easy fix.
I have the 96 version of this sled. Similar mileage and the engine hasn't been touched. Still runs like a top. It was going to passed onto my son, but the 96 MXZ I was fixing for myself burnt, so I'm keeping it. LOL
It does sound like an irregular air/fuel mix, or maybe old gas with some water in it. The aftermarket air filters could also be adding to the problem too, if the carbs weren't jetted for the increase in airflow.
Man, I strongly suggest you make sure the secondary clutch is disengaging fully. I know you guys are definitely handy in the shop but I don't remember any vids where you guys ever really got into refreshing clutches.
Try and take those pod filters off and put a stock air box on it, I had pod filters on my mxz 500 and it it was super boggy, but when i put the air box back on it ran fine,
The 488 Fuji motor is known to go 10k miles without a rebuild. Indy Trail and Indy 500 were extremely reliable. That was probably the best engine Polaris ever had, they are hard to kill. Polaris also had the best clutches during that era by far. The Indy 500 will show about 95MPH on speedo an the Trail will show 88MPH. The speedo reads quite high though, in reality probably need to subtract at least 10MPH.
