i made a chaeto reactor with a spare small pump (180gph) and a aquamaxx reactor (i had from not using - still a cost tho) and now this instead of a hob -working great
Oh, you sweet child. Tell me one thing that belongs to this hobby and that's not marked up at least 4x than what it should be... Take that HOB for example. If you look on sites for all the parts, you will end up with a bill of 30-40$ :)!!!
A local fish store just did video and showed he has an all Xenia refugium. Apparently the xenia will absorb the nutrients, not take things out of the water like iron for your corals, and won’t release toxins to inhibit coral growth ( with is something macro algae does to compete for space ). I am super super interested in this and wondering if the claims are true.
Been feeding for 15 years and back when I was a younger person for 10 years. Never seen a fuge drop PO4 to zero. Also have seen most fuges eventually become havens for cyano and other slime algae . Without additional flow they need a good regular clean out. Reactors are even worse. If you d DT gets overrun with nuisance algae’s you can’t use reef safe chemical approaches to clean it (as a last resort. In a nut shell there are drawbacks to everything and while I would opt for a fuge every time, they are not a cure all.
Just got the tunze 3181 3 days ago and am running it externally. Already its working and working well. 3 days it went from 00.49po4 to 0.27 and still lowering. Amazing product but top expensive for what it is.
Thanks for this! But!!! How do you actually add it? Just plop it in your sump straight out of the jar? Does it need to be acclimated? And do you add it with the lights on or off? Or does that even matter? Thanks again and keep up the great videos!
A cheap and amazing solution for cheap fuge light is to buy those black box grow lights. You can get a 2000 watt blue/purple grow light for $200. Yes, I meant 2000 watts. And yeah, they are bright enough to sun burn my hand as I harvest chaeto.
Feels like the title should be "Avoid these pitfalls and mistakes by not setting up a Refugium". Most of the list are reasons you should have a refugium.
Suggesting a Kessil light for your refugium is kinda pretentious. I don't mean they don't work, I mean they cost 400 - 600 dollars. Kinda lame for just growing more algae.
Filter socks will remove solid waster, protein skimmer will remove organics and algea with a tunze white chic light will remove phosphate and nitrate. You would have to have a fuge the size of a tractor trailer to keep up with 10 average fish.
Just another advert for the useless turf scrubber that nobody wants. So funny they talk about not having a sump or not wanting a hang-on filter then promote the space waster (I mean turf scrubber). Made so much worse by the fact the one option you had for this scenario (Tunze 3181) was dumped on because it has thumb screws and suggesting you can't see the chaeto when it has a clear window down the entire length of the side and does NOT require a sump to be used..... The 3181 is certainly easier to see the growth in compared to the turf scrubber and way easier to maintain than the turf scrubber (loosen some thumb screws on 3181, take lid off and remove some chaeto and put lid back on versus having to keep getting into sump area of turf scrubber and taking lid off scrubber to check if maintenance is needed weekly, then having to remove screen, take to area to clean off, put screen back in and wait a week or more till it works again). All that extra maintenance and now you also have to deal with strings of "turf" in your pumps or the god awful smell it has.... NOPE
There needs to be cheaper solutions to HOB refugiums. No reason these little plastic boxes with a pump need to cost $200+
I totally agree they are waaaay over prices. Come on manufacturers drop these prices.

Take an empty plastic beer barrel (20-30 liters) from the pub. it will be free for you.

Buy a 3D printer and save big time. A $400 printer with $10 filaments can make you anything you want.
I'm just starting my first refugium, this is great timing

Wow yes. I’d like to know too
Me too! is the video on you tube?

is it a bad thing to run my refugium light 24/7 vs the common offset/display light.?

Great video, thanks
Good one!!!
How do you think this format of fuge (chaeto) compares to something like a sea grass display tank
You guys should really link the products you’re talking about in the description

What settings should my blade refugium light be. I wish they only let you control intensity and not each channel which is confusing.
Even without my refugium and with heavy feeding im still struggling to keep my nitrates and phosphates up😭
Start keeping NPS 😂
More fish ? 🐟 🐠 😅
@@federicomanglavite9897 why?
@@DEXTER-TV-seriesI assume its because they require feeding all the time, so you'll generate more nitrate and phosphate.
how possibly the truth your feeding is not heavy enough
Hey guys I'm in the UK and cannot find aqua mesh. Could this be substituted with bubble trap foam which I can get anytime?
I used a piece of 3mm acrylic cut to size and routed out some slots like in the overflow. Tacked it in place with some two part epoxy.
should I dump my skimmer and use the space for a fuge?
What do you mean by 0 0 with a refugium? Surely we needs some p04 and n03?
if i do 0 0... it's a nightmare dino/cyano for me....
also if 0 no3... cheato dying...
@@pataclow thats whybi can understand what they were talking about lol
"Now I did it"... Hahahaha
Do the clam refugium! That would be so awesome.
How they can reduce nitrates ???
Man my macro algae died under that Home Depot light.🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️
Fix the typo in the title
lmao

Ya filter socks. Limitations AND worms 🤢
Why does he look like he had cancer? Seriously BRS is sucking the life out of home… I miss your old videos. This ain’t it
