  • MBT is a complete game system modeling the US 7th Army and the GSFG Soviet mechanized forces of 1987. It is M1 Abrams (105mm and 120mm armed version)versus a whole stable of Soviet armor with their T-80s, T-72s, T-64s, and upgraded models of T-62 and T-55. There is even M60A3s sprinkled in to balance out the US tank inventory. Bradley IFVs and CFVs mechanized units are set to take on their counterparts mounted in BMP 1,2s and even a few 3s. Not to overlooked M113A2s and BTRs and MT-LBs are also set to make their appearance.
Mechanized infantry and their related weapons are in abundance, including M47 Dragon, M72 LAW, AT-7 Saxon, AT-4 Spigot, and multiple RPG versions.
The scale is right down in the weeds with individual vehicles, infantry squads, half squads and sections. Each hex is just 100 meters across, so it is going to be nose-to-nose action at its finest.
The rules cover the total realm of modern mechanized combat with ATGMs, including TOW and deadly Soviet gun launched missiles like the AT-11 Sniper and AT-8 Songster, special armor (including ERA), advanced night fighting with thermal images and image intensifiers, advance artillery with ICM and laser guided shells, helicopters, including the AH-64A Apache and Mi-24P Hind-F, attack aircraft, including the A-10A Warthog and SU-25 Frogfoot, and missile and gun armed AA units to counter the deadly air threats. It is all included in this total package.

Just picked up this video (7 yrs old), but thanks for doing this. I've laid out the game solo to learn it and struggled. This video helped clarify and answer questions for me. Cheers.

I was tempted by Panzer, but MBT is a less represented topic and appears to be a denser "base" game.
Can't wait to delve into it with my friend. May even go down the road of madness of painting GHQ minis for the game...

Hi Chief. Thanks for yet another informative review. The Number in the white box is the "B" on the data card - the Bog modifier. See the Vehicle Data Card Key. (it increases the Bog DR under the advanced optional rule, 7.29) - credit to NHudge on BGG. Cheers

Nice introduction. Thank you. I share(d) your fear of these kind of rules. But not anymore. I realized that to me (!) it is/will be quite easy. Having 35 years of experience with tabletop miniature wargames (incl. WW2 and Moderns) and the respective load of availabe rules, the advanced rules won't be a problem. More or less the only difference will be to check for the rule in MBT. This will be fun. And I know where this going to end, Gaming in MBT, trying "real" or suggested scenarios, creating also my own and then every now and then also gaming them with my minis (1:72/20mm) on the tabletop. Will be ordered incl. the BAOR and FRG expansions. A must being a Brit and living in Germany. Actually also being "a child of the Cold War". Seeing iin real life in the past much of the BAOR and FRG equipment, plus US and also East German and Soviet hardware (when travelling from West Germany to Berlin and back). Every now and then taking a wrong turn. "Oh, I thought this was the road to Magdeburg (nowing where the barracks and training areas where. Every now and then my car would "break down"). Hmmmm, guess not. Ohhhhh, look, some of the new T-72AV's over there ..." etc. Enjoyed if when quite often I had someone following me. Especially enjoyed it when being approaced confusing the "interviewers" talking fluent English or German to them etc. Actually, I admit, I'm missing those days. Never had a problem with the Soviets. Always rather respectful, especially when they realized I was travelling using my British passport. They weren't very fond of the "Yanks."

Nice review, Chief. I hear you about immersing yourself in a system that's "crunchy"; sometimes it's really hard to get the basics down... and that happens more often as we get older!!! But, for an old-school tactical grognard like me, I wouldn't have it any other way. I can't play games with simple "defender retreat one" combat results...too boring and abstract. So, I have to take the bitter with the sweet, and slog through long rulebooks whenever I get into a new game or game system. Eventually, I too, am going to have to devote some serious time both the MBT and to Panzer. Finally, I'm among the people who are aghast at the maps in this (and in Panzer, too, to be honest). GMT really dropped the ball with this one aspect of the graphics and the package. The rest looks great...

I just grabbed this for my collection during the GMT sale and appreciated your high altitude overview. While easy to reference, I agree with your sentiment that the rule book could be brought up to date with a more approachable presentation. I wonder since your posting if you've dug into the more advanced rules at all. I would love a run down on the ATGM, helo, and fixed wing aircraft rules. You pretty much have to bolt those on. It's definitely more crunch mechanically than I typically look for in a title but I just love the hypothetical WW3 theme and can't get enough of the modern armor.

I have not returned to it somewhat sadly. Team Yankee is one of my favorite books and this is team yankee the board game. I don’t see me going back anytime soon and I passed on the nationality expansions which I had originally wanted.

I'm really intrigued by this and ordered a copy. I'm looking forward to getting some Apaches and A10s into the mix, giving the ground units hell. Something to really dig into over a longer period of time by learning and introducing more and more advanced rules. Sounds nice.

I just got MBT. My version is from Avalon Hill. There seems to be differences in the rules. When I looked at the charts you displayed in your video they were different from the charts in your game (counters also). Both versions seemed be going in the same direction,, but I miss your excellent tutoring. Your new Buddy Mike

GMT did update several things. Not sure what since I never had the AH version. After the war in Ukraine they may need to update some more. And add drones. Lots and lots of drones.

Howdy, Cheif!! I know I’m 6 years too late, but from one MBT-nut to another, please revisit this and bring out the advanced rules. Any chance for a HAMTAG playthrough?

    • @BondingWithBoardGamesRPGs
      @BondingWithBoardGamesRPGs  8 місяців тому

Wow has it been six years. No HAMTAG play throughs. When we meet we just do Top 5 lists. I haven’t touched this in years. What I have been thinking about is how the war in Ukraine must have changed things up. Man portable AT missiles are more effective then I imagined.

I fixed my language...sorry missed that in the edit. Also commenters pointed out that the +5 on the counter is for bogging down and is covered in the Advanced rules.

I agree with you on the difficulty of the rules and I consider myself a moderately focused Wargamer (ASL, Third Reich, Russian Campaign). Makes me want to rewrite the rules in fewer, but more illustrated, pages with a step thru example from the start of play. I think it's just a bit too wordy. I'm looking forward to playing the game though.

Good ol' line-of-sight fiddliness is why I only play tactical-level wargames on the computer. I doubt boardgames will ever solve this problem.

It's a real time tactics game but if you like the WW3 theme then I would highly recommend both Wargame: Red Dragon and Wargame: Airland Battle. There is also European Escalation but I find it hard to go back with the newer mechanics. A lot of effort has gone into modeling the units in terms of stats and graphics and there is a large emphasis on combined arms.
