    07:48 - Audio mapper support
    08:49 - Famicom Disk System support
    10:07 - Backing up games, adding ROMs
    In addition to providing a more convenient way to get games to your original hardware, the EverDrive N8 also brings support for the Famicom disk system (without actually needing the hardware) and the ability to make save state files. These are snapshots of the game that can be saved to the SD card built into the cart.
    The EverDrive N8 works with the original NES and Famicom hardware as well as my two favorite high end clones : the Retro USB AVS and the Analogue NT Mini. Some of the other clones I've tested do not work with it. See all of my clone reviews here: lon.tv/nesclones

    This is the best review of the Everdrive N8 I've seen. I've been curious about the save states, but haven't seen such clear and helpful information about how they work on it until now. Thanks for always producing such thorough and thoughtful reviews!

    i'm currently building my own NES game and considered buying one of these to test and play my own games on my original console. I really didn't expect to get such detailed information about the mappers that are supported. great video!!

    Lon, you are correct. Famicom disk system has additional audio channels in the RAM adapter hardware. The Everdrive N8 can play the game, but can not replicate those audio channels so the sound will be a little off on FDS games.

    Absolutely awesome review! I was about to buy the Powerpak. Everdrive is absolutely the best choice for what I'm looking for. Thank you so much!

    Anyone who has an Everdrive N8 and is interested in a nicely organized complete ROM set should Google "smokemonster everdrive packs".

    You are correct that the American NES cannot play the extra sound channels from FDS games; HOWEVER, you can add a resistor to the motherboard of the NES, and gain the ability to play those sound channels.

    Have you read this recent article on "The Dangers of 3.3V Flash in Retro Consoles" by db-Electronics? Fortunately, the Everdrive N8 is safe but some models of Everdrives may put consoles at risk and those 150-in-1Multicarts are particularly risky. The article is definitely worth checking out. db-electronics.ca/2017/07/05/the-dangers-of-3-3v-flash-in-retro-consoles/

    Everdrive N8 plus Analogue NT Mini equals NES Nirvana.

      If you have the NT mini you really don't need an everdrive since you can run roms off the sdcard through the system.

    Great review, but one thing to note the Powerpak has over the Everdrive N8 is an NSF player so people can play their FamiTracker creations without wrapping them into a ROM. Probably doesn't appeal to too many, but worth mentioning. Also, if you want expansion audio from the N8 without soldering, just order an ENIO EXP Board and you get the added bonus of a Famicom peripheral port. The mappers can get reasonably close, but not as close as the Hi-Def NES or NT Mini, and even then nothing beats the actual sound of the chip, which is why I ordered a Gimmick repro with the enhanced audio. Supposedly the VRC6 for Castlevania 3 (J) is one of the more accurate mappers on the N8, but not for any other games that use it.

    I've got one of these with a Top Loader modded with the Hi-Def NES. The experience is fantastic playing on a real NES in HD. The Everdrive is awesome to have so you could have the entire library in one cart.

  • @Justin-Hill-1987
    @Justin-Hill-1987 7 років тому +4

    you can replicate the FDS audio on the NES by attaching Chykn's ENIO expansion board to the NES expansion slot on the bottom of the NES.

    Thanks for the review.. I picked one up but, have not used it yet. I did update it but, I was really wondering how the save states worked. Everyone said it had it but, no one showed how they worked. Thanks ! going to setup my restored NES today...in about 2 weeks I will be shipping it out to get RGB mod to go through my framemeister. So I should get almost pixel perfect quality out of it. Cant wait !

    Compared to the xxx in 1 with battery save Chinese carts. $120 seemed expensive for sd card capability, every game save and homebrews. That's until the FPGA part. That is impressive.

    Great review! This is what I've been looking for! I have a question though. I live in a PAL country and have a PAL NES. If I play usa nes roms, is there still any issues with the speed as it was in the old days? Thanks for a great video!

    Hi! loved your review on the AVS (ordered mine recently), and am looking to enhance that experience. I am curios to know if it is possible to use the same SD card across different everdrives (as in having one SD card to pop in the NES cart and later the SNES and so on)? so far most state they max at 32 which should be enough for the eventual collection of nes, snes, and genesis (maybe 64).

    Great review once again. Also not to nitpick but I noticed on the left side of the video not sure what to call it but but it looks like a mirror of what's happening on the right side so kind of looks like the video doesn't stretch the whole screen. I have never noticed that before and just thought I'd let you know. Also only seems to appear when you are switched to the camera that shows the TV

    i just got a everdrive gb x7, can't wait for it. it's better than trying to dodge bootleg cartridges on ebay to find the real deal. i wonder if it comes with a microsd or is it sold seperately, if not, i could get one at walmart or order one off amazon.

  • @tommyvanpelt2408

    it's an interesting device but to harken back to the episode where you built a computer, why don't you do a video where you build and populate a Retropie. It's cheap too buy the necessary hardware and the software is free. on a side note, do you have a p.o. box because I have a couple start] palmton computers that would make an excellent addition to your shelf behind you. It's functional and the batteries still hold a decent charge.

    • @tenspear5399
      @tenspear5399 7 років тому

      I think that a retropie is better than any of these methods of playing older games, but retropie videos have been done to death.

    • @tommyvanpelt2408
      @tommyvanpelt2408 7 років тому

      tenspear True it has been done by many people but Lon comes from the same generation as I and I think he would populate it with a different game set. I have one set up currently that my son plays that I populated with all things Mario because I consider those games safer for a 5 year old. What project would you suggest? Another interesting project would be a pitop running retropi.
