I'm in a data science masters program right now. My reason is simple. I work as a data analyst for a major corporation and the only way I can move to a data scientist position is by getting a master's degree and data science or analytics or computer science. I meet all of the other qualifications. My company's paying for the whole thing and I'll be finished by the end of the year.
Got my MSc in Data Science last April. Do I regret, hell no! Do I want to do a PhD, hell yeah! Guys just go for it! Life gets easier when you get educated.
It also depends on what your undergraduate degree was in. If you have an undergraduate degree in computer science or statistics then it probably makes no sense for you to get a master's degree in data science. That undergraduate degree will oftentimes be enough to get the entry level Junior data scientist position. My undergraduate degree is in political science so I had to go the Masters route.
Thank you for this comment. I'm a history major and I'm was wondering what my chances are as I am currently applying for a data science master. I thought liberal arts literally had no chance of getting in.
What basic should I know? What computer skills should I learn? I have no previous computer knowledge. You know, they do not teach any practical skills (just memorization of definitions) in my country. So I am complete beginner like nursery child. Please reply. I want to do masters in data science or AI (maybe in Japan).
Got a CIS undergrad and became a data analyst. I have been regretting my choice of undergrad and didn't like the job. And recently got an NLP data science job with a pretty decent pay bump right after I earn my part-time DS master's. I remember the interviewer made sure I finished my master's, so for me is worth the 30k. I understand the over-saturated situation, so I am trying to earn a TF certification and other skills like Scala, web dev/scrap, tableau, etc. Going through my master's got me into the habit of learning every night, so doing the master's could be one of my best choices. p.s I just received my diploma in mail box today woowowo
congrats! I am a CIS undergrad who worked as a data analyst and is currently a Research Developer/Biostatician looking to get into data science. Where did you get your masters?
just recently came across your page and love the content. I am currently a MS student in data science. I come from a non-technical background, receiving my bachelor's in agriculture. However, I was very fortunate to get a full scholarship and assistantship to my current master's program now. I can honestly say I am only getting my master's because I made a career switch and got a hell of an opportunity. I am currently an intern at a manufacturing company. I love how you talk about salary expectations as well. I was very shocked by the salary ppl are making but I understand from an entry-level perspective and DS being fairly new at this company.

@Chris Candelo yes. The update is that I finished in June last year and still don't have a regular job in Data. I'm doing some freelance and have done some internships since then. I got a very high score at uni but it doesn't seem to matter. Very demotivating
I think you have to compare apples to apples though. Who would you choose between an undergrad with a DS internship and an MS grad with a DS internship? Both have the internship, with the only difference being the degree.

Hey, I am going to Australia for my masters in Data Science next year. I totally agree with what he said in this video about a masters degree not being the ultimate gateway to getting a job in DS and Ik, I have to get that internship and practical experience during my two year masters. But I wanted to know, what is the scope and growth of Data Science and tech in general in Australia? Coz I can't seem to find this topic anywhere on UA-cam. A reply would be much appreciated.
Hello .. I’m finishing my electrical engineering degree next year. I have little knowledge about data science but I want to do my masters in data science. What do you advise that I should equip myself with before heading for the masters?
Hi Jay, I got a bachelor in Business in my country and currently I'm working on my AS degree in computer science in the US. Apparently I can either transfer to a 4-year uni to get a BS degree in Data Science or I just can go for a MS degree because I've already got a bachelor. Some people said that if I don't have a bachelor here in the US, it's hard to get a job. They said the bachelor degree in my country is not valid here so I shouldn't do master without bachelor in the US. Well, I don't buy it. And I'm aware that just a degree cannot secure me a job, just like you said. But I think a MS gives us more opportunities to do research and project than the BS. What's your thoughts on this? Please advise! Thanks in advance!
