Im really new to the hobby only been 3-4 race nights. TT-02 and im glad I asked before buying as carpet spec tyres and all the small extra's meant I bought once :) I also had a really friendly member who no matter how busy he looked would always come over and go over my car and give me advice.
a few tips i have: 1. don’t let the other races crush your spirits. you’re new so you should not expect to be perfect in racing, at my local track there are 3 racers in particular who try to intimidate and act better than new racers. race because it’s something YOU want to do, ignore the rest. 2. ask other (friendly) racers for recommendations on things like tires and electronics. some tracks work very well with certain types of tires that may not work somewhere else. 3. if your radio permits, use throttle curve! what helped me get used to a very fast motor (i bought the rc off someone else) and throttle curve helped me get used to the power and eventually evening out my curve using it to its full capacity. 4. slow is smooth and smooth is fast. smooth racing is WAY more important than being fast! trying to pick a racing line and sticking to it without going over barriers or hitting other drivers. speed comes with enough laps and practice! i have won many races simply because i crashed less than MUCH FASTER drivers. 5. DONT BE SCARED. a big issue i faced was being too scared to get in with the big dogs particularly in oval racing. those rude drivers i talked about earlier scared me into not wanting to get in the way or slow anyone down causing me to race slower and not want to get on the inside of the track. after getting over that fear i began to get way more podium finishes! 6. PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE
Great pointers there Gav. I’ve been into RC for years but only took the leap into racing a few months ago. It’s amazing! Wish I had done it sooner and it’s so good to see yourself improve week on week. And no matter where you place it’s enjoyable!

I have 4 offroad and 2 on road all of them are 1hr 10 mins to 1hr 30 mins away. There are definitely days where I don't want to do the travel on top of the whole day racing, that is until I go and love every minute

Good Video! One thing is missing in my opinion. It's always better not to start with a too fast motor. Clean driving with a slower motor is often faster😉
Totally Agree. Plus with a motor thats not as powerful as your opponents, your driving skills will naturally improve as you try your best to keep up. Then when/if you do upgrade to a more powerful motor, your skill + motor will give you the upper hand.
I did what you said after watching your video and the classes and racers that run at my local track were nowhere near what I had assumed it would've been based on what I've been reading online. If I would have done that first I could have saved the hundreds of dollars I spent on assumptions rather than what fits a class. I don't really regret buying them per se, but I would have been in the door sooner. This is all stellar advice. Cheers.
US resident myself, and my local shop/club runs clay track for 1/10 buggies. I don’t have much experience with rc, but I did decide to start with building a modern a kit, and taking my time to build and learn. My local shop has been great with helping and answering questions as I teach myself. UA-cam has also been a great resource. One thing I would throw in, is getting a good set of tools upfront. They can be pricey, but there are small threads and precision stuff in these kits. Great video, thank you for another fantastic resource of information!
Great to hear you are giving racing a go, it's great fun but it can be a little overwhelming at first.. Give it some time and you will improve massively and thats when the fun really starts.
Great advice 👍🏻. I started racing my tt02 over a year ago and i was awful when I started 😂. Stuck with it as still really enjoyed it and it took me around 8 months to get to the front. Now I’ve just started buggy racing with a B6.2 and love it! Would love to see what set up equipment you use for your buggy’s, think it would make a great video 👍🏻

BUT, when it comes to serious competition, all information is strictly a STAFF ONLY situation. But I'll ALWAYS help folks with everything. Just not always give MY set-up away. Sometimes, not always.
Great video! Covers nearly everything you need to start. And don’t be disappointed of your first races. I started 2wd buggy category right from the beginning with world champion grade material and setup tips from european champions who drove in my club. In my first race I was 10 laps down in a 5 minute race. Fast forward 2 1/2 years and I won my first A main final.
Actually the see what everyone else is running/recommending at your local track applies to electronics as well and helps you figure out what class to run and a baseline setup. Definitely practice practice practice, break the track up into sections and work on one section at a time
Excellent video, and I agree with pretty much everything you've said. Definitely get tips and feedback from other racers, even if they run different cars to you, it might actually help. Where I race (Indoor Raceway Stevenage and HRCC) nobody has the same cars as me, I'm on my own, BUT the group of people I sit with all run FWD the same as me, and sometimes changing things the same as they do can be useful. And as you said, change 1 thing, test it, then see what happens. And above all else, HAVE FUN!!!!
Went to a race meeting yesterday with a mate 👍 Organisers were very enthusiastic, are still racing indoors for a few more weeks and then moving to outside park track. Never raced dont own a car been told i can hire a car and radio so ... be interesting to see how we get on. He owns a car is a beginner like myself 2 wheel drive racing incidentally at the club with some vintage too. Wish hed stop sending me ebay links 😅
I’ve been racing for over 35 years and you hit the nail on the head. Great advice for beginners. Though I am one of the fast guys and when people ask me for my setup, most can’t drive it, because I run a very aggressive buggy. But I will help them set up with something easier to drive. Disclaimer, I only run on dirt, never tried carpet. Maybe a beginner can handle an advanced setup on that surface. 🤷🏻♂️
Many just want speed when they hit the track, follow pro setups sheets as though ur the pro driver 😂, jump right on those bling parts without even trying the stock parts/setup the car properly first..
Great video, really good advice and one reason I don’t race is because the closest club I’ve found is a 45 minute drive! And probably the biggest reason I don’t race is with work, family etc I simply don’t have the time 🤷♂️
And parents, please don't come to your local indoor club with little Jimmy and his hpi savage asking if he can have a race with the GT12s and mardave minis then getting naggy when you are told no 👍
The biggest mistakes I made when I started racing in the early 90's was not practicing before I entered my first race and not having spare parts. I just showed up one day at the track to race and got my ass kicked!
A little late but one thing I thought of that you didn't seem to mention. Is a race license, don't you need that in the UK? Here in Sweden you need a license from the national motorsport association. Which includes theoretical with all the rules you SHOULD know. And then you need prove that you can handle your car usually at a club race with a training license. But you are if course welcome to come and train on tracks. But if you want to complete you need a license. I think club races is a gray zone.

RC is like everything else- No one spends $5000 on their first Mountain Bike. RC is the same way. Get your feet wet first until you're at a level of understanding to spend $1000 on RC racing.

Only one thing you need to know. Do not join a club. Don't bother even looking into it unless you want to deal with whiny babies, drama queens, hateful people, and nothing but having your day ruined by nearly everyone in the club. Just get an RC car/truck you like to start out and go anywhere but a club to run it. You will have much more fun and be able to relax and enjoy the experience.

I live in Podunk, WV and there is a track 20 minutes away. Two more tracks 45 minutes or so away and a 1/16 scale track about an hour away.

my local club in Birmingham is 1hour 30 minutes on public transport.... its a pain coming home on the bus at 10pm but its still worth it for me

@@Edwardlm1915 we mostly race tamiya tt01 or 02. Touring cars and gt12s. Keeps the field even and closer racing. Facebook group is good place to start

Tyres are 80% setup, get the right ones for the type of racing you do first time out. This makes a massive difference of your experience of the hobby.

Sounds like you need to try another Club. I don’t think you can say that about every club ever.
