Hi Caroline I always find a good rant is so helpful!😅 You sounds like an intelligent women trying to find a healthy lifestyle. I’m old school as far as attempting to follow a simple plan: drink more water, add fresh fruits and veggies, and eat smaller portions of the foods that in excess can cause weight gain. Keep up your good work and thanks for sharing your story.✌️❤️

Great vlog, Caroline, I love a good, honest rant! I know exactly how you feel - the planning and the prep is so hard when you've already got a full schedule and you're not the only one in the house who's trying to stick to a program. I started watching The Magic Pill, it's really fascinating.

You're so intelligent- just eat in moderation. These daft diets are costly and stressful and are never sustainable.
accept yourself for being a little curvy. You don't want to be on a diet for the rest of your life. I've dieted on and off my whole life and been slim and heavier. Now I just try and eat in moderation. You look fab. X

I love your honesty Caroline. I have tried everything. WW , SW, 16:8, Keto. You name it I've tried it. I've struggled with my weight since my youngest was born. He's now 23! I also have quite severe athritis. I completely agree with you about enjoying sitting down to eat with my family. It's pretty much our social time as well. About 6 months ago I decided I wasn't going to diet any more. Now this is much easier said than done. Really giving up dieting after years and years of treating food as good and bad is tough. But I was determined. I read this book (Body Positive Power: How to stop dieting, make peace with your body and live) and it's helped me immensely. I've listened to it 3 times now, whenever I feel I'm slipping back into the diet mentality. I urge you to read it. It's been life changing for me. I've actually lost around a stone since jumping off the merry go round. I'm never getting back on again. I really hope you give it a try. It's made all the difference for me and I really hope it can help you. Sorry for the long rambly comment but what you said could have been me 6 months ago. Good luck xx

Thanks, Julie, I will look up that book. The problem is, I'm not particularly unhappy with how I look, I want to lose the weight for my health - blood pressure and arthritis. It's hard to be positive when you know that your weight is causing pain and needing you to be on medication.

I agree and thats the main reason I need to lose weight, but by taking the focus off restricting food it seems to be much more natural for me to eat sensibly x@@CarolineMrsM

I totally get you. I am writing a book at the moment and I am writing from 7am until 7pm. My husband really tries to help out but he never cleans properly and if I ask him to do dinner, he always makes unhealthy meals. So Friday I had the whole day off to blitz the house and did a meal planner and shopping for the week. I feel so much better now. I hope you feel better soon. You will eventually find something that works.

It’s great to hear your honest opinions. I’ve been dieting for most of my adult life (at my biggest being a size 20 and my smallest a size 16) and like yourself I found Keto very successful but it is hard especially if you work full time with a family. I also found it expensive and time consuming with shopping and planning meals.
I have found that cutting out refined foods and exercising regularly has helped with aches and pains of getting older but I still haven’t achieved any significant weight loss. 🙁
Thank you for sharing your experiences, I really enjoy all your content. 😀

Great video Caroline, thank you for your honesty. I have been having one meal a day and am surprised by how easy, and free from faffing it is. It takes a bit of getting used to but doesn’t interfere with a family evening meal, I eat what I want for that meal. I now don’t feel hungry throughput the day, it’s a revelation.

I'm back and I've read the comments, for what it's worth my take on diets is they only work for short term weight loss, it has to be a lifestyle choice and willpower to reduce weight and keep it to a healthy level. Addressing the arthritic pain you need to research foods; mainly fruit and some veg that cause inflammation I know there are things I am best avoiding. My guess would be you like to control things so no diet /eating plan will work for you for long because it's not your food choices, someone else is calling the shots so to speak. My hope is that you find some way to help your body and mind find a balance for a happy healthy you.

It will become routine for you & then it will stop bothering you. When I first started eating vegan food, everyone around me was on the Standards-North -American-Diet. They’d be done eating & I would still be cutting, slicing, dicing, & chopping fresh produce for myself. You get used to it & eventually you speed up the process. But once again, I encourage everyone to go on a Whole-Food-Plant-Based-Diet: Please read TC Campbell’s “Whole”; and watch the documentary “Forks Over Knives”. My guru is David Wolfe. He’s a nutritionist, author, & you should check out his website as well.Good luck with everything! 🙏😊

Nobody is built to be perfect, Caroline! Keto is certainly popular, but isn't there any wiggle room at all? Your knee is feeling better, your blood pressure is down, etc. Hoping you see more results through the month that will make you feel better. Everyone has shit days, too. Some days it's all just too damn much. Deep breaths, my dear Caroline.

You will find a food plan that works for you, you will get there, it’s just so horrible having to watch what you eat, your head has arguments with itself, just feeling guilty if you have a slice of cake or half a packet of biscuits, I hated myself when I was large, I’m sort of happy now, 6 stone lighter, I do Keto but know if I come off it, all the weight will go back on, I am very strict with myself but could easily go back to my most horrific eating habits, my mind still argues with itself, it is hard work, but I look at myself in the mirror and still don’t recognise the person that looks back at me.
You will get there, I was 55 when I started, 57 now, so took me many years to find a diet that was for me.
All the best, you will get there.😀

I forgot to mention in the video but one of things I hate most about diets is having to weigh and measure, so I need to find something that works the way I do - ie bung everything into the pot until it tastes right, no scales or cup measures in sight!! :) Maybe smaller portions is the way to go for me.

I can totally relate to the keto struggle! I’ve tried it 3 times over the last year and have had good results - energy, skin improved & weight loss - BUT it’s sooo inconvenient and takes meticulous planing & shopping. I’ve switched to good old fashioned calorie counting and just try to avoid refined carbs for my evening meal - so far so good !

I think you needed to process this and it’s good for you to do so. Family time is important. Who wants to give up the limited time you have together. I believe that you can modify your diet to fit your life. This was a good process time for you. Please don’t guilt yourself for becoming frustrated. Sometimes weeks can be overwhelming and it sounds as if you had one. I suggest applying some of the keto principles, but not so strictly. I hope your life slows down a bit.

Hi Caroline, as a family we are the same round the dining room table for tea to catch up on everyones day / week. I have simply given up on diets as anything that restricts me, it only makes me crave that food group and miserable. I’m losing a steady 1lb a week by cutting back on my portion size, it’s not a dramatic weekly weight loss but it soon mounts up. I hope you find a solution to what works for you that is workable for your life.

Wow, I am blown away with just how frank and honest you are discussing your struggles with food, weight and diets and the complex relationship these have with family and social life. It’s true, if completely unfair, but being a mother, wife, businesswoman mean diets, issues with weight and our attitudes, relationship (whatever) with food is not a solitary endeavor, meaning make grand changes to our eating habits can have real consequences to our family life. I am still struggling to find something which a. works and b. is family friendly, all the while trying to mask the disappointment of my weight. My plan, to start when the kids return to school, is to dramatically cut my intact of sugar, decrease my portion sizes and to do at least 30 minutes a day of brisk walking. Nothing grandiose, but hoping small changes will improve my willpower to more ambitious goals. I completely understand your struggles, stay strong.

Just adding my personal story to the mix (sorry). I really struggled with weight after my children were born. Hated myself. Avoided the camera. Had I gone missing my family wouldn't have had a photo from the previous 10+ years. Did low carb, tried vlcds like Cambridge diet. All good short term but there was an inevitable trigger that would begin the cycle again. I have only lost weight by making food a conscious decision. No one ever got fat from eating too much fruit or other unprocessed food so those are now my choices. They say it takes 3 weeks to unlearn a habit. I think bad eating is a habit you can unlearn. Slow and steady is the only sustainable way I think. As wives and mothers somewhere along the line we end up putting our self care last on our to do lists!
Thanks for all your videos x

Hey Caroline, I think whatever you do eating wise has to work for your lifestyle I hope you don't stay frustrated by it. We all know pretty much what's good and bad maybe just making a few changes would work for you, so swapping your carbs for instance so wholegrain, whole wheat version rather than white, limiting treats and drinking more water could be what you do. As you know I calorie count because it works for me, as I don't have to ban anything because that would make me want it more and I can work it round whatever I love as long as I limit my portions and so I never feel like I miss out, as with anything it takes a while to get used but now I pretty much know and the great thing is when you use mfp you can create your own recipes so if you have that again you don't need to work it all out again so this is great for me and I have the odd take away usually once a month on that day I plan say a low cal breakfast and dinner so I can have say a chinese later on. I think changing to a healthier lifestyle and basing it round your lifestyle & the things you enjoy is achievable because it's what works for you xx

Morning Caroline, I watched this again today and realised that what was possibly the issue for you is commonality. If your hub and you were on the same page, i.e. eating for health, delicious appetising dishes, perhaps just modifying your favourite dishes. What we did was first have lab tests CRC lipids HBA1c done to see what could be improved to help our health and possible longevity. Caroline change isn't easy, transitioning to new ways, is so much easier with support from family. Not a diet just to loose weight, but long term benefits for you both. High fat may effect gall bladder and general health although keto does have short term weight loss, but to keep it off you mustn't imagine you can go back to eating as before.
Just suggesting maybe you could check out a wholefood plantbased approach. Btw I eat jacket potatoes, baked beans pasta etc and have bp of 114/72 on average, I am also plus size but releasing extra body fat little by little.I just empathise so and wish you the best.

  • @cosmickate4947

You don't need to be or do rigid macros type keto you can just allow 20 carbs and that's it. I actually went carnivore after being on keto......the thing is you will lose your appetite and find you don't want to eat anymore, it really is the only way to lose weight if you have a sugar addiction because that never goes and that's why slimming world and all the others don't work for everyone, especially when older. It took a while to realise you can be even healthier without fruit and vegetables. I got down to leafy greens only and was in excruciating pain in my hips I could hardly walk, gave up leafy greens, went carnivore and ALL pain and swelling in my leg gone. I'm convinced oxalates were the cause of inflammation and realise greens can be bad for some. Dr Jason Fung is good, Dr Shawn Baker, Bart Kay, Frank Tuffano, Dr Schmidt, Eric Berg, Keto with casey (a woman our age), Adapt your Life channel etc........

I wasn't counting macros, only carbs. I have to say I found the Facebook groups almost cult-like in their evangelical approach, it was really off-putting. I didn't realise until I left how low they were making me feel. Obviously it does work well for some ( you are living proof), so glad it's helped so well with your health. Can I ask, when you say you are carnivore, do you literally only eat meat now, or anything else?

    • @cosmickate4947
      @cosmickate4947 5 років тому

@@CarolineMrsM I eat all meats, fish, cheese, cream, sausages and milk in my tea, eggs, spices, odd bit of sauce now and then but for faster weight loss cutting out dairy is better but can't do that at the moment. It took a while to get my head around the fact humans can get all nutrition from fat and meat. Shawn Baker only eats muscle meat/rib eye steak. Keto diet has much more variety but when the craving for sugar goes and fat burning kicks in the appetite goes. I'm a binge eater and this is the only way for me but the main bonus is being able to walk again.

Love a rant. The whole losing weight thing is so tedious, isn't it? For me anything really restrictive/different is not going to work long term, particularly in a family situation. Low carb as a principle is a good idea, for me missing breakfast (so 16/8) is good, calorie counting so can have 'normal' food, plus more physical movement all help. Some supplements are meant to help with sugar cravings/blood sugar - chromium, zinc and biotin. Learnt recently that alcoholism is considered to be sugar addiction, the two people I've known who are drink dependent also eat large amounts of chocolate. Nutrition is fascinating.

Watched with fascination as I would like to try Keto but think it will also be the faf / limited diet thing that won't work for me either. As you say its all very well if you only feed yourself but like you I have others to consider and a limited amount of time to faf about. May try low carb as an option which will be less restrictive if I have what the others have but in different proportions maybe?

Hi Caroline, I hope that you and the chaps are doing well. I loved this video as it’s just so you, honest, open and REAL. You know what I’m going to say, you always look lovely and no matter what your weight you will enjoy your cruise and have a wonderful time. Also if you are like me, when I’m on holiday I love to over indulge and cruise food is always so plentiful and indulgent, so don’t beat yourself up over a diet. French ladies don’t need diets such as Keto, they have a little of whatever they fancy but always in moderation. And they generally eat lots of carbs. The only thing about a new diet that you can be certain off is that another new diet will be hot on its tails. The Middleton ladies do the Atkins diet which I understand is more “user” friendly. Try not to put yourself under so much pressure, life is too short., much love x

I don’t eat rubbish and use my daily syns on real treats such as butter on my potatoes or sauces ect. It works really well with the family and they all eat the same meals as me. 10lbs down in 3 weeks 👍 I’m not just focusing on weight loss but living a healthier lifestyle.

Hi Caroline. I know exactly how you are feeling. I'm on Keto too. Its my 30th Wedding Anniversary tomorrow and we normally go out for a lovely meal, but I have no idea were to go and what I can eat. I think that I will only keep to Keto to lose the weight then go back to doing Slimming World to maintain my weight as it's a lot easier when eating out, or a watered down version of Keto maybe, but the keto diet is the only one that's worked for me in years. Some of my best times are spent sitting around a table eating lovely food with family and friends, I can understand why you will not be continuing with Keto as it is very time consuming.

Sorry it hasn't worked out for you, I know exactly what you mean though as it's very time-consuming. I did keto for a couple of months to help with my diabetes, which was even harder as I'm vegetarian so even less food choices. However, even though I'm no longer keto I still make some very low carb choices when I can and my weight is maintaining and occasionally losing too. When you're having a very busy day, it really is something extra that you just don't need. But on quieter days I find myself eating keto-inspired lunches, and snacking on cheese instead of chocolate etc. You might find the same, keto does kind of get in to your brain once you've tried it. Weirdly I found keto easiest to do on my cruise, the buffet was great for loading up on weird combos that worked!

Can't even imagine how hard Keto is as a vegetarian! I definitely want to reduce carbs overall, but in a less strict way than keto.

I have just come off the Keto diet and I lost two stone but I have been on it since middle of January.
I can really relate to what your saying my husband and I share the cooking we are retired so I have more time for planning but I found I was constantly think what to buy what to cook. My husband would cook his meals me mine but we hardly ate anything at the same time anymore. I started it because in July I went on holiday to Greece I wanted to loose the weight I didn’t want to look like the Stay puffed man from Ghost Busters 😂 so I came off Keto for my holiday but didn’t go mad. Since getting back on weighing I have put back on seven pounds this last week I tried the Carnivore diet which is basically meat meat and meat I took off six of those pounds the experiment ended Friday on weighing myself today Sunday I have put back on 1. 1/2lb. The thing I’m getting at it you have to be 100% committed ALL THE TIME and I’m sorry but life is to sort, my diabetic nurse won’t be please if my sugar levels go up but I’m going to give low carb no sugar a go so as long as I’m not tempted my pasta potatoes or bread I should be ok. I’m going to still make my Keto bread because I actually like it.

I've waited with interest to see how you got on with keto, so, here goes. I live alone, have done sw and yes, was a bit bored. Keto isn't any easier, imo, even if single. I am retired, only in age, still have my own small business, part time job, grandkids, run a food club etc etc. But I found keto difficult, so I tried the intermittent fasting and calorie counting, omg, who has time to weigh mushrooms and work out the calories? So I'm back with my version of sw, also imo, the easiest diet in the world, I too have a holiday coming up, and I WILL get at least half a stone off. But well done, thanks so much for sharing Caroline. Oh, and if you haven't watched Deep Water, iplayer, set in the lakes ( I can see the hills from my window) give it a go. Could you just not calorie count? My fitness pal is great to record your calories. They seem to have every food item listed. I’m doing a 4 week blitz till a big birthday in September to shift another half stone. Once I have had my calories for the day I stop eating. I go to bed way too early to avoid eating. Dieting is so hard and the older you get the more difficult it ease to shift the weight. I still have the same food as the family but my portions are so much smaller. I am also having ice lollies to help. Thanks for sharing how Keto is going.

All diets are restrictive in one way or another. It depends on how much you want to lose the weight. Keto is basically meat, fish, poultry vegetables with some sauces. I cook for my partner and he eats the same as me with the addition of potatoes, rice or etc.

Your hubby better be good in rooms other than the kitchen to get away with doing no household chores!!! 😱 You have to listen to your body and do what feels right, I am personally against “diets” but if Keto is making you feel good you should try your hardest to make it work (and your man should support & help you!) because nothing is more important than health. You say you don’t have willpower but you do! You demonstrate it in your daily life getting 35676544 done rather than taking it easy! Willpower with food just takes time and you have to be in a place mentally where you know exactly why you need to do it. I hope you can find something that works for you and makes you feel good. For me it’s a vegan lifestyle (for ethical reasons) and the 16:8 way of eating as research shows that’s how our bodies function optimally 🌱

    • @CarolineMrsM

Nobody can keep all the balls in the air, life is too complex for endless planning and changing priorities evertday. I think you are being far too tough on yourself. I am not overweight but I have to live on a carb reduction diet because I'm borderline diabetic. I l ive on about 130g of carb a day, some days more, some less. No separate meals, no guilt, some days I eat chips and bread. I eat fruit and beans of one type of another everyday. I drink too. The problem I have is making sure I don't lose weight. I have arthritis also, bone on bone in one knee so weight bearing ex cerci seems hurts like hell.. so it’s swimming for me and dog walking on grass (less impact on my poor ole knees)...it’s an ongoing battle isn’t it? and I do know where you’re coming from..
