    One thing about Bach, especially as time in Leipzig, is that’s with all the talk about how incredible it is that he wrote a Cantata every week… it must been incredibly stressful for the poor guy.
    Really think about it, despite being a genius (and he indeed was), he was facing incredible pressure of not only writing this music at incredible quality, but he had to do it with lyrics that weren’t poetic to work with; that he had to compose during his off time from teaching at a boy’s school to teach music, Latin, Greek, and reading from the Bible; living in noisy, cramped conditions with his family of multiple children in said school; took on commissions usually at the very last minute, without giving him several months of warning; had to pay very expensive rent payments while earning very little; and not only that, the city council of Leipzig had often complain about his musical style for being too extravagant for their simple taste. The poor man must’ve been stressed nearly 24/7.
    The real miracle is that he was able to write anything at all under such conditions.

      I dont think he actually had to writhe the cantata himself, he could use material that already existed. He had to present it though, I think that is actually much more of a challenge considering he certainly didnt have the best musicians around.

    Very well done, re-enactments and all. Bach's musical output is second to none. His title should be, Chief Musician to God.

    Bach has been my favorite musician since I was a child and I’ve listened to most of his instrumental music and read what there is to know about his life. I see a lot of comments here complaining about the ladies commenting on Bach’s portrait. Personally I find their comments interesting and even insightful and fairly accurate.

      Google spatiotemporal brain dynamics during recognition of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach:
      "Remarkably, the recognition of Bach's original music ignited a widespread music processing brain network comprising primary auditory cortex, superior temporal gyrus, insula, frontal operculum, cingulate gyrus, orbitofrontal cortex, basal ganglia and hippocampus. Furthermore, both activity and connectivity increased over time, following the evolution and unfolding of Bach's original patterns."

    Robert Spano, Thank you for leading this team of wonderful artists and bringing the life and music of Bach so much closer to us. The performances of these familiar works are full of new things to hear. The visuals invite the heart as well as the eye. The story and narration are warm and welcoming. Such an enjoyable and enriching gift all of you have given us.

    This doesn't quite do it for me. There are a lot of pretentious moments which wander off into realms of disjointed cut scenes, for example attempting to explain a fugue by having five people chatting across each other. Actually that doesn't really explain what a fugue is. This is one of many affectations which just detract from the clarity of a useful presentation of Bach's life, history and music. It's quite short on facts and long on pseudo drama which fails to hold one's attention.

    Nice selection of Bach's most famous pieces for the novice listener. The "acting" was unnecessary. It's difficult to make a documentary when so little personal detail is known. For me playing Bach for decades, the great mystery is how anyone could come up with what he did, it's a miracle, And I'm a former physicist and not religious at all.

    • @lindacowles756
      @lindacowles756 Місяць тому

      @@renzo6490 Renzo, that's an excellent and important question. To believe in God, the Creator of the universe and all that is in it, means not only to give mental assent to His existence, but to trust in His absolute sovereignty and goodness. It means to surrender one's life to Him in all things. He alone is holy and the Giver of salvation through His Son Jesus Christ, Who made atonement for our sins in His death on the cross. Man cannot earn or work to earn salvation from sin and every person is born a sinner, separated from an all-holy God. God, in His love and mercy, made a way for us to be able to be forgiven of all of our sins so that we could be in right relationship with Him and go to heaven when we die. That way is by placing one's trust in Jesus Christ alone for salvation. He said, "I AM the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father [God] except through Me.' (John 14:6). To believe in God means submitting to His authority over one's life, as He is the Most High God and sustains all things in heaven and on earth. I truly hope that this has helped answer your question.

    This could have been OK-they dedicated 2 hours to the subject-but I think it tries to serve everyone, from novice to experienced musician, and it fails. I’m not sure anybody could manage such a feat. I personally had to stop watching with the really insultingly bad modern presentation of actors portraying Bach and one his violinists engaging in a “fight” outside a church, complete with a mock TV reporter. I mean, WTF was that?? How do you put this huge canard between statements about Bach signing all of his works “To God’s Glory Alone,” along with statements by symphony orchestra members relating their personal feelings when they perform Bach’s music??? Terrible!
