The original manga names, of all of Ataru's close friends, were replaced by vague descriptions of their physical selves: Such as Perm (for his hair) , Megane (For his glasses) and Chibi (Cause he was short)--- Since Rumiko Takahashi usually gave her characters names with double meanings, I doubt that she appreciated the changes, but, seeing as this was her first anime series, she probably was afraid to object. (Later, her popularity meant she would have much more control, over future anime projects)

2:47 blew my mind. I mean, the casual use of strong profanity in what was supposed to be an anime for teens is hilarious (I know the English don't see it as strong profanity, but we do), but that closing comment of, "I'm diabetic" is so random and played so straight it nearly made me pee my pants.

Longtime fan of Urusei Yatsura here (think the better part of 2 decades). Also for dumb reasons my favourite character for this entire timeframe has been Shuutaro Mendou.
One of the most interesting things to me is character-naming, and while I've seen some people dive into names (like Lum being named for Agnes Lum and Ataru's name meaning "hit by a falling star), no one ever points out the Mendou siblings' names.
"Mendou" means trouble, though our Mendou uses a different kanji to give the meaning "mask hall" (which I think an apt name for someone as image obsessed as our boy). -taro and -ko were in the 80s extremely common suffixes for boys and girls respectively.
But Shuu (終) means "end" while Ryo (了) also denotes completion/something being "done." Shuryou (終了) is a common way to express that something is over with.
    This always interested me.
Another interesting canon-confirmed Mendou fact is that he sleeps with a nightlight. I just find that funny.

Also, did you know that Takahashi always intended for Lum's hair to change colours depending on the lighting? It was supposed to be similar to how colours move through oil to create a rainbow. (I have a little Lum plush and she has the cosmic hair, if you want to see!) I'm hoping they incorporate this into the reboot with modern tech.

Idk if this is a little known fact, but the reason Lum wears a tiger striped bikini is that Oni in traditional lore wear tiger print loincloths.
(I will shut up if you want I just now have an excuse to talk about UY and am taking it)

Did you know: TMS reversed the premise of UY into the one season USA animation series Galaxy High School. In fact, many of the animation was drawed over from UY, just repurposed with alien characters as opposed to Ataru and the other humans.

Loving the lum videos its great seeing the series getting attention.
One thing you missed was urusei yatsura being used heavily in a music video
Matthew sweets I've been waiting which uses alot of clips of lum from the movies and anime think it was kind of the first time lt got some attention in the west.
There was also the Indie American comic ninja high school which pretty clearly taked inspiration from urusei yatsura especially

Another topic that would be cool to see Is the affect it had on other anime and manga and other series that were attempts to try catch some of that urusei yatsura type storys like shonen jumps attempt at it with wing man
Heck tms ended up producing the cartoon galaxy high which was a attempt to have a similar style series on the west
The tabletop rpg teenageds from outerspace is also heavily influenced by urusei yatsura even borrowing some character archetypes and some episode scenarios for potential game plots the art is also pretty urusei yatsura esq which you basically could run you're own urusei yatsura type story

    1. It's possible that Rumiko may have originally intended Ep. 6, "Black Hole Love Triangle"--where "bad" Lum makes one last all-out attempt to break up Ataru's relationship with Shinobu, even making a kamikaze run with her UFO--to be Lum's finale in the manga, but like Shampoo in "Ranma 1/2"...she came back. Cuter.
    5. Speaking of LA adaptations, Mamoru Oshii first turned his idea for his later movie "Fast Food Grifters" into UY episode #99, "Certain Death Eating Contest".

There's one thing that I, a man who owns the Laserdisks of Beautiful Dreamer, have never found an answer to: The Wind Chime Scene.
Its been about 10 years since I fell in love with the series, I've watched the movie over a dozen times, but I still don't understand why that scene exists.
And now I have to hunt down that live action movie, too.

For those who are fluent in Spanish
There's a solid Spanish dub of the entire series that's freaking hilarious in all the right ways, it's all on UA-cam too 🤣

2:21 Kosuke did return in the remake, but now I understand way more why he was omitted in the OG anime in the first place. I'm kinda thankful that the Lum Stormtroopers took his place most of the time and have a bigger role in the OG anime. Megane is really awesome, but it's a bit sad that he and the other stormtroopers have returned to their minor roles in the remake.

Me before video - I think I might know one thing.
Me after video - No score.
Interesting stuff. But let's be honest, if we're talking about things about UY that most people (outside of Japan) don't know about it then number one is that it exists. You've basically gotta be an oldtaku to have heard of it.

Hey I myself am thinking about getting into the series and I just wanna ask are the movies a good starting point to get familiar with Urusei Yatsura or is it better to watch the Anime Series first?

    • @TitanGoji
      @TitanGoji  2 роки тому +1

I would suggest watching the show first, though not in its entirety yet given its episodic nature. Mainly so that you have more context on the characters that appear in the movies. But, the movies are still a pretty good way to get into the series, as you can still get the gist of these characters.
      If this helps,
Movie 1: Only You was released after episode 58
Movie 2: Beautiful Dreamer came after episode 99
Movie 3: Remember My Love after 140
Movie 4: Lum the Forever after 191
Movie 5: The Final Chapter adapts the manga's ending, taking place after the anime chronologically
Movie 6: Always My Darling is a 10th anniversary celebratory film for the anime

The British English dub of 'The Water Margin' from the early 1980s is worth finding as well.
Played deadly serious (which only makes it more fun), and quite heavily censored after the first showing on TV, it's something a generation of British people recall with fondness.
