    As someone from a computer science/vision perspective who's deeply involved in this, from what I understand dewarping refers to the correction of the distortion caused by the lens, which impacts the mapping of pixel coordinates to real-world coordinates in an image. For example, the x, y pixel coordinates should correspond to the exact location of a target object in the real world. I believe this distortion is a major issue affecting the accuracy of the geolocation estimation algorithm I've been working on.
    Wide-angle cameras often face this issue where there's a slight fish-eye problem that needs to be faced and as an engineer we need to apply pincushion transformation on the image.

    The problem with the Mavic 3e is that the main sensor is a little oversized for the lens profile. It results in a slight fisheye effect, which introduces other problems depending on your aspect ratio, specifically vignetting in some ratios. Dewarp does two things: 1.Reduces lens distortion 2. Crops image to remove vignetting. In some mapping/ortho software, dewarping is not an issue as the software will do image rectification automatically and make it's own corrections for vignetting as part of the stitching process. You can do an ortho with dewarped imagery BUT you will be uploading less info per photo as dewarping crops the image. In that case, a mapping flight could need more overlap depending on the mapping flight software you use (i.e. if it compensates overlap for a dewarp crop). On the other hand, not all ortho programs are good with handling image distortions/vignetting, so if you shoot warped, there is a chance you may run into a problem where the ortho can't be generated or it will look shoddy. As for RAW, you most likely wouldn't be shooting a map in raw, so the inability to dewarp isn't an issue. As for your results, a more open iris can also increase vignetting, btw. There may have been an iris setting difference between the jpg and raw.

      Thank you for your comment @alacazaba. Best explanation I've gotten on this issue. For my regular DSLRs I have a few wide lenses, including an 8mm fisheye for doing 360 images. And of course there's vignetting from that lens. What I'm doing at this point is having Dwarping off for my map / model flights. And when doing stills at the job site setting Dwarping on.
      Oh, and you're right, I don't do maps/models with RAW images.
      Thanks for sharing a great explanation for everyone here. 😀

      Great explanation , so it's recomanded to turn ON the dewraping for the mapping mission ?

    • @alacazaba
      @alacazaba Рік тому

      @@boutriknabil7746 it depends on your ortho software, but you should be able to stitch more successfully and at higher quality using images without vignetting and image distortion. It's the same sort of idea why one would use a mechanical shutter - good data in=better output (though not always). Of course, trust but verify, the hang up would be if you're not getting sufficient overlap because of the inherent cropping in dewarp..

    By the way, I believe the deworping can only be picked up by the computer. The reason you turn it off is when you're doing an orthomosaic map. It helps the computer stitch. The photos together better. But I don't think you and I can see the difference. When you're using drone deploy, it will automatically turn it off.

      I haven't done drone deploy yet. That will be coming soon. Just trying to cover everything DJI gives us with the M3E and what they are missing as well. I still need to do more testing with Map Pilot Pro, and hoping at some point Litchi brings out the app for the M3E.

    01:55 turn off the gimbal Lock to fix your waypoint import gimbal issue? I’m also thinking since this Drone doesn’t do a manual white balance it will be best to capture raw images so you can send them through Lightroom and force a daylight white balance on all the images, which I think would fix the inconsistent colors by using a forest, Auto, white balance…

    Hi Rich, with all these little things popping up with the M3E I am thinking it may be awhile before I consider getting one. May stick with the phantom 4 pro v2.0 for awhile yet. Appreciate your work!

      It's a solid mapping / modeling drone for sure. But definitely not what I expected in an enterprise drone. We've still got our Mavic 2 Pros and Phantom 4 Pro. I've just been using the M3E for testing mostly to see what it can do, and find the issues as I experiment with it.

    You mention Dewarping ON applies a crop. It's applying a lens correction to the image, which actually stretches out the image over the same resolution as if it were turned off. It needs to apply the correction because of pretty severe warping. For example, in your example, you have the horizon right across the center of the image...this is literally the one position it’s hard to see the distortion depending on conditions haha. I'd encourage you to go out, lower the gimbal so the horizon line is almost at the top of your image, take a JPEG+RAW image with Dewarping ON, and JPEG+RAW with it OFF. With it Off, you will see the horizon bending hard in an arc. With it ON, it will be much flatter, more realistic. Also, with other Mavics, I do not know on the M3E, when you take JPEG+RAW, the jpeg and raw differ slightly in resolution (by 8 pixels either direction), and to add to that, Adobe Camera RAW when opening the DNG, no matter what Adobe program you're using (Lightroom/Photoshop) applies a lens correction profile (even though in the optics menu you don’t apply one, there’s a small note that says one is applied automatically), which further makes it differ from the JPEG, despite it being taken at the same time. I know this because I do 3d camera matching, placing 3d models into photos and videos and it really threw me for a loop. Now, for my work, nothing to do with mapping, I request Dewarping ON, JPEG only as it appears to be the most correct version, with the in-camera lens correction applied to the JPEG.

I went down the M3E no manual White Balance rabbit hole as I am absolutely floored that it doesn't come with it, and that's where I came across your video on it, in the DJI Forum where everyone is lighting up DJI. Also, there's no sharpness customization? What is going on with the M3E??? haha. Besides manual exposure, manual WB, sharpness (I prefer 0 or in the negatives!) really helps the overall look of the imagery and only 1 of those 3 is available? Yikes.
