Neil Peart on The Spirit of Radio, “The song itself, musically, is switching between radio stations, with a reggae section at the end, the second verse is new waves, I’m playing like a punk drummer there, and that was all intentional.”
Yea, Lex nailed it! She totally got the concept of all the different vibes and sounds. Also, Brad and Lex should try listening to Rush just by focusing on Neils drumming. It's an adventure all by itself!
I'm not sure if it was Neil, but one of the guys claimed the reggae part was inspired at the time by the Police who had been delving a bit more into that sound. Proof that this band could draw on just about any genre and make it work. This and Free Will to me are Rush at their best.

Ah yes, happiest days of my life too. When they opened for KISS in the early 70s I only wanted to see RUSH play! Several times, I took my ex-boyfriend’s daughter with me during the 80s & 90s.
Hey bro, I want to get on the happy bus your girl is on!!! You both are correct though it is a testament to the radio and the rhythm is a celebration of music!!! Great reactions guys!!!!
Lex, enjoying the hell out of the music. Getting happier and happier. Brad, reading the lyrics and getting a little down. So many songs in the Rush catalog have that sort of duality to them. They were just an AMAZING band.
You guys compliment each other perfectly. Lex is into the music and Brad gets into the lyrics. And with Rush, both sides are important because they have great music and very profound lyrics.
This song got HEAVY airplay on all the FM rock stations when released...Rush's label wasn't too sure about them, but thier patience paid off big and they immediantly extended thier contract.
“So many things at once”….. by a 3 man band! One of the greatest live shows I’ve ever seen! Next song should be ‘YYZ’ live in Rio. Absolutely will blow you guy’s away. The crowd participation is incredible.

I laugh and feel your joy, especially for the appreciation of a band that myself and millions of others have felt for years. Watching your reaction is a gift of renewal and revelation, making it feel fresh again. Brad, you are the studious one who not only apprciates the music, but also moved by the message behind the words. Rush is a very thought provoking group whose primary writer and lyricist is the extraordinary drummer Neil Peart. Alex & Geddy, extraordinary themselves, are forever grateful for the time shared as Rush, and will forever miss their bandmate and friend Neil. Thank you Brad and Lex for giving time and appreciation to one of the best, if not the best, progressive rock bands ever.

LUV it, Brad is reading the lyrics and indulging his mind🤔, LEX is just rock'n out to the vibe!🥰. Interesting Hiway analogy. I use a biking analogy for music choices. On the road, rythm music, same beat, for a consistent pedal cadence. Mountain biking on killer trails, ups/downs/lefts/rights, is pretty much always RUSH, prog, or complex rock!☮
You guys together are like a song. Brad is the lyrics and Lex is the music. It's even visible as you react with Brad thoughtfully pondering the meaning of the words and Lex vibing the energy of the sound.

So powerful in lyric and music. You guys are gonna have a LOT of fun with this band as you explore their goods. You have no idea!
I think my favorite parts of this song are the reggae bridge and the old school rock and roll piano at the very end. It's embedded in the mix but it adds that extra layer that just makes the finale perfect! Love your reactions. So fun to see people react to a Rush song for the first time.
You know I’ve listened to this song so many times and heard the piano but it never registered to me as such if that makes sense. It doesn’t seem like it should fit, yet it does perfectly! Thanks for pointing it out!
You should listen to Jane's Addiction "Ocean Size". They are a highly influential band that paved the way for grunge music, only they were creating their best works in the mid to late '80s. They were recognized for putting the nail in the coffin for '80s hair metal.
Good to see rush getting the appreciation they so well deserve by more and more music fans. Their piers and fellow musicians have for years known their talents.

Back in the day, CFNY-FM, in recent years "The Edge"- " The Spirit of Radio"… out of Brampton, Ontario on the outskirts of Toronto. Love how you each are getting it on your own terms, your own lens, ear-goggles 😂 Probably the first song to finally win me over. Cheers to you, Brad and Lex!! That's contagious, girl. Fun the way you absorb and reproduce those riffs. ✌😘🎶💞
Glad to find someone mention this. I used to listen to CFNY before it moved to Toronto. A very progressive radio station that played Rush when Rush had trouble finding radio stations that would play their music.
102.1, this was my go to back in the late 70's/early 80's, such a great station. You had to be pretty close because the wattage of the station wasn't that high. Heard so many great bands that I probably wouldn't have heard on that station. Eclectic doesn't even cover what you would hear on it, they didn't have a "format", no corporate influence. This was Rush's tribute to it.
I absolutely LOVE Lex's reaction! Everybody should react to this song like she did. Lol! Apparently, Lex appreciates the change-ups of Rush music. Fantastic 🤘
Having been around long enough to have heard a lot of the music you feature when it was released I get a real kick watching your reactions. The way you reacted to this track especially brought me back to playing air guitar and jumping around my childhood bedroom. You guys are an absolute tonic. Keep it up.
It's a musical journey down the radio dial. The section just before the reggae drop is supposed mimic rolling the old radio dial until you hear a song you like. The song is also a slam to the music industry when you have to comprise your music to reach a broader audience. Funny thing is, Rush didn't bend to "the man". Matter of fact, they were almost dropped by their music company, but the album (2112) was a huge hit. To give credit to their record company they decided that they just didn't get it, and let Rush do their own thing.........As long as it sells. Rush is definitely a band that you have to listen to a few times to kinda figure out where they're going with the music and lyrics, but it's also why their music never gets old. Enjoyed the reaction! Take care ✌

Lex you’re so much fun! Rush is a musician’s musician band. Incredibly gifted bass player, guitarist and especially amazing drummer who by the way writes the lyrics for their songs.
This song is quintessential rush distilled down: Come for the virtuoso music, stay for the incomparable and moving lyrics.
Lex is adorable. Your happiness at listening to music is infectious. The two of you complement each other.
Brad and Lex are a great contrast in styles, and so man and woman- he's listening to the lyrics and she's dancing. I love these sort of reaction channels, because I get to hear these great songs for the first time AGAIN by feeding off the energy of the folks getting blown away as they listen...
This song is a masterpiece of lyricism, musicianship, and nostalgia.
Let's talk about the drums.
Ho Li Phuk.
yeahhhh baby!!!
Ya, Neil Peart was ahead of his time and has influenced many Rock and Metal drummers ever since. Heck, they're all top tier musicians. Even the singer is a nasty bass player.
ladies and gentlemen:the professor on the DRUM KIT!!!
From one James to the next, you are correct sir!
@@jhamilton1007 even the singer is a nasty bass player and plays chords with foot peddles all at the same time
Ahhh Lex, You Bring a Big Ole Smile to My Face. I would Always get that Same Happy Feeling each and Everytime I was about to Drive to the Venue to see them Live...Waking Up to Concert Day is and Always has been the Happiest days of My Life. It never gets old.
Ah yes, happiest days of my life too. When they opened for KISS in the early 70s I only wanted to see RUSH play! Several times, I took my ex-boyfriend’s daughter with me during the 80s & 90s.
Lex: loosen up, loosen up!
Oh how the turntables have….lol
Gotta love how she called him out.
As a musician ..I would love a girl like yours to jam with..Lex is the sh1ts
Agree. To quote Rick Springfield, where can I find a woman like that?
One of my favorite top 10 songs of all time, reacted too, by so much joy and energy, made my year. Thank you so much you two!!!
“So many things at once”….. by a 3 man band! One of the greatest live shows I’ve ever seen! Next song should be ‘YYZ’ live in Rio. Absolutely will blow you guy’s away. The crowd participation is incredible.
Her joy and energy is infectious. She makes me want to dance along with her. Love it!
Thank you for another RUSH reaction. I can't tell you guys how fun it is to watch these reactions. This one was like Brad going " Slow down we don't want to get a speeding ticket" and my girl Lex is pedal to the floor with her head out the window. The mix is on point . Thanks again. More RUSH...... Subdivisions 🎧
Lex, you are the soul embodiment of the flow of the sound, tickling the very essence of your being.
Saw rush during their Roll the bones tour another great album... Waited all night to hear Spirit of radio like Lex my favorite.....
I read the change ups are meant to be like switching radio stations. I was blown away when I learned that!
I just learned it in the comments here under the video a few people have mentioned it. Really Cool@
Correct
You guys are a perfect pair for reactions. This one was so much fun.
That was priceless!! Seeing her geek out and groove to my favorite band made my day, seven ways to Sunday!! Fun! I love you guys! 😄
Lex had me literally laughing my @$$ off 😂😂. Her energy is SO infectious!
And Brad with the "love song for the radio" killed it too!
I love how much Lex loves this song! That joy is so pure
They should give her an award for best reaction to a song on UA-cam! That’s how you lose yourself in a song.
The switching up of tempo recreates the tuning of stations on the radio.
Yas! That one switch up then is like turning the dial all the way from 88.1mHz to 107.9 mHz? 40 years later and that's totally making sense. Amazing comment--thanks!
A love song to radio… Nice one Brad. And love the giggles of Lex😂😂
I've been a Rush fan for over 35 years and I've seen several reactions to this song. Lex's enthusiasm makes me appreciate this song even more (and I didn't think that was possible).
I'm crying happy tears ❤
Her laugh is the BEST!!
Brad's like the Emporer in Amadeus.... "Too many notes!" Lex was pure joy in this reaction and it was wonderful!
The lyric analysis of Brad combined with the instrumental analysis of Lex is an amazing duo for song reviews!!
Love you guys! Lex seems to feel the vibe deeply and Brad is the professor, looking for the deeper meaning in the lyrics.
You guys together are like a song. Brad is the lyrics and Lex is the music. It's even visible as you react with Brad thoughtfully pondering the meaning of the words and Lex vibing the energy of the sound.
This classic transcends backgrounds and generations. Rush rocks! Many of us would highly recommend you check out the big hit "Subdivisions", which has timeless lyrics that EVERYone can relate to. So powerful in lyric and music. You guys are gonna have a LOT of fun with this band as you explore their goods. You have no idea!
As a fan...Lex would have TOTALLY fit in to a Rush concert with this song!!! Fans love this one!!!
watching Lex listen to this you can see how much positivity she exudes. Smile lady smile...
Love how Lex is having a great time, while Brad analyzes. Lots going on in this great song. Can you imagine Lex at a live concert of this?
I think my favorite parts of this song are the reggae bridge and the old school rock and roll piano at the very end. It's embedded in the mix but it adds that extra layer that just makes the finale perfect! Love your reactions. So fun to see people react to a Rush song for the first time.
You know I’ve listened to this song so many times and heard the piano but it never registered to me as such if that makes sense. It doesn’t seem like it should fit, yet it does perfectly! Thanks for pointing it out!
What a great reaction.this is what music does.it brings out different emotions,in different people.this is the COOLEST reaction channel on UA-cam.
It's just like TURNING THE DIAL on the RADIO until you find a song "that makes your morning mood." AWESOME!!!🎵🎵🎵.
I love seeing , through these reaction videos published by people of all races, backgrounds, etc- music being shared across so many cultures
It's AWESOME
Brad has no idea how lucky his to have Lex. This album brings back so many memories
How do you know he has no idea he's lucky? I'm sure she would say she's lucky to have Brad as well.
@@sarcastic_redbeard6263 true that
Back in the day, CFNY-FM, in recent years "The Edge"- " The Spirit of Radio"… out of Brampton, Ontario on the outskirts of Toronto. Love how you each are getting it on your own terms, your own lens, ear-goggles 😂
Probably the first song to finally win me over.
Keep it up.
In all my years listening to RUSH I've come to know them as the "Tchaikovsky of Classic Rock" . . .
"A parallel to nostalgia"
Very cool thing to say. Probably should put that on a shirt
Take care ✌
The lyrics during the reggae break reference Simon and Garfunkel's "Sounds of Silence": "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls, and whispered in the sounds of silence."
Except Neil wrote "profits" not "prophets".
Perfect song for the morning drive. Been listening to it since it came out on the radio. My favorite Rush song. You two totally get it, and your insights are spot on.
Shes definitely guitar rhythm. I like how he pays attention to lyrics and overall sound and feel.
Love rush! This track is so relevant today. "Glittering prizes and endless compromises shatters the illusion of integrity."
Rush is incredible on all levels: musicianship, composition, lyrics and integrity.
Rush can write a song about anything... and often do. A lot of people get a nostalgic feeling from Rush. I think it's in their sound. Check out YYZ (Live in Rio). Such a vibe! Funny note, Lost in Vegas also compared it to Reading Rainbow.
Two words. Red Barchetta!!
“The Spirit of Radio” was released in 1980, three years before Reading Rainbow aired on TV. I suppose the comparison is a generational response. 🤣
Lex is SO positive and open to all kinds of music. It's why I subscribed.
Lex, you are the best! Brad, you're a lucky man. Thanks you guys, for sharing your joy of discovery with us. It's wonderful!
Gotta tell ya as a genuine compliment, your significant other Lex, is absolutely adorable, what a cutie pie! You're amazingly lucky. 👋😄👍☮
And wise, he put a ring on it!
@@cameron_fairchild man, i wanna find one like that.
