Where can I find that red clip that the lady is using to hold the obi? Also love this video its easy to understand! I will try this with my kimonos as well in the meanwhile to get a better sense of it and practice
You could even use a hair clip you use when sectioning your hair. Clothespins, chip clips. Anything will work. “Official” antique clips ARE expensive ,comparatively
hey can someone clear something for me? So in minute 04:00 the lady in the video said something like “that’s not how you would traditionally do” talking about the bow. can someone please tell me how to wear it in a traditional way?
@@shonen84 Afaik womens are wider than mens. My yakuta-belts are stiff enough, but my formal dress obi can almost stand up by itself (thick embroidery) and is hard to fold. Just by some scarflike material if you want this type of quick-tie.
I love watching 1960's samurai films. Always wondered what was going on with the ladies dress belts. Looked like they had a water bottle, or a pack of sandwiches stuffed in there. But now I know, thank you. However, the diameter of the dress doesn't look functional? And what about going to the loo, it's going to take half an hour? Well that said, next is hats as people always seem to be walking around with some ridiculously over the top lampshades as hats. Apparently, they had something to do with their status. Anyway, you wouldn't laugh at these hats unless of course your name was Zatoichi!!! Update, yep just as I thought. had a look at the Japanese straw hats and many look absolutely stupid and probably on purpose to start a fight. Check it out, monks literally walking around with waste paper bins on their head. Still when in Rome! If everyone is walking around with a stupid hat on, you're going to look really odd if you don't have one. Anyway Japan is such a cool and rich place. Thank you for the informative video.
Those hats are there to protect against the fierce sun and sometimes downpour rain. So yes..they are shades. They are utilities, not fashion statements. ( though most clothing eventually has the double function). If your main food is rice... you also will have a lot of stems, leafs etc. left over from growing it. So it makes perfect sense to use those for a lot of things.
I agree. Even though a yukata is called 'summer kimono' it is a different species. way different to put on ( faster, easier and much much lighter to wear). I appreciate the instructions, but would not wear this variation with a non-yukata kimono. Thank goodness there also instructions for the formal version.
Thanks Billy Matsunaga
Watching this so I understand how to draw it, thank Golly for these tutorials

they are just called "kimono clips".There are some Japan-based sellers on ebay that can mail you a set of clips -- they're not expensive

Can you tell me the length of this obi?
Hi Trang, this obi is 4 meters long. You can check it out here: shop.japanobjects.com/products/red-diamond-weave-obi-belt
What kind of fabric is the obi made from? Silk?

She shows you how to do so right after. The non-traditional part is wearing the bow with the tails out
When your japanese and still can't tie an obi
My obi is to thick and doesn’t look right I’ve tried so mucch 😢😭😭
Perhaps you have a kaku obi or men’s obi? They tend to be thicker and stiffer and don’t fold like how Billy showed in this video..

Thanks but you did the tie a normal bow way too fast
In other words tie your shoe laces. Alternatively buy a belt and do it up in 2 seconds.
The heading is completely wrong. This is for tying a Yukata. Not a Kimono.
Thanks for your comment Dilara! This is actually a video about tying an obi belt.
