      No, that's only when you take the square root on both sides of the equation, that equation already had the square root so its not plus and minus. Same reasoning the square root of 25 is just 5, not 5 and -5.

    14.57 should be sq.rt. of x shd be taken as denominator and solve left hand side and you get 9/6 which becomes 3/2=6 sort. x
    Divide both side by 6 and you get 1/4=sq.rt.x so the answer is 1/16.

    Do you only check to see if the solutions work if there are two solutions or should you do it every time?
    For example: Would I check with just the solution x=9? Or would I check if it was a quadratic and there were two zeroes found?

    • @iamathing7510

My teacher told me that you must always check the answers you get (whether it is two solutions or not). I am not sure if my teacher was wrong, but either way checking your answers is a good idea! ^^

    In Blitzer I see this rule :
    If X^(n/m)=A then, IF n IS EVEN, then, X= PLUS OR MINUS A^(m/n)
    In the equation that is solved here, n=2, so n is even.
    So
    (1) (x-4)^2/3=4
    (2) (cube root of x-4) ^2 =4
    (3) cube root of x-4 = plus or minus (square root of 4)=plus or minus 2
    (4) (cube root of x-4)^3 = ( plus or minus 2)^3 = plus or minus 8
    (5) x-4=plus or minus 8
    (6) x = 12 or x= -4
    Is this correct?

      It’s like doing 2 digit multiplication.
      You multiply the ones and tens digit in one one number by the ones and tens digits it the other number
      12^2 = 12*12 = (10+2)(10+2) = 100+20+20+4 = 144
      The mistake that people make is like doing (10+2)^2 as 10^2+2^2=100+4=104 which as you know does not equal 144

    how would you solve this equations square root 2x - square root of x+1 = 1

    • @adamabdallah2604
      @adamabdallah2604 7 років тому

      Cynthia Alley you square both sides to remove the square root so you will be left with. 2x-x+1=1.
      Now 2x-x=1-1
      2x-x=x
      1-1=0.
      So x =0.
      Fill in the answer in the original equation it will be 1=1

    • @zeroanims4113
      @zeroanims4113 5 років тому

      @@adamabdallah2604 hey question, can you actually square the sqrt of 2x - sqrt of x + 1 = 1
      Because as far as I know you can't square two terms separated by plus sign or minus sign? (unless you're gonna foil it, which I think you didn't..?)

      I can solve it
      60/5 x = 60/6 x + 12/60
      12x = 10x + 12/60
      LCD: 60
      Multiply by everything by 60
      (⁶⁰) 12x = (⁶⁰) 10x + (⁶⁰) 12/60
      720x = 600x + 12
      Move variable to left
      720x - 600x = 12
      120× = 12
      Divide both sides by 120
      × = ¹/¹⁰

    why dont you move the 5 to the other side instead of dividing it on both sides?

    The square root of 6.25 is +-2.5, not just +2.5, which means 5.25 is not an extraneous solution. Just saying.

      Yes but again he is only considering the principal root. So negatives are going to be avoided. And to actually check if the final answer works you have to substitute this to the x in the equations and this works.
