    My name is Michelle. I am in my seventies. Broke both wrists while roller skating. I was given the option of having casts and spending weeks in a nursing home, or getting plates and going home in a couple of weeks. One week after surgery I had full finger use on both hands and had shown that I could take care of myself. My hands had been unwrapped and I had plastic temporary splints. I was sent home with a prescription for acetaminophen. I returned within a week to have the stitches removed. I continued my exercises, and now 6 weeks after surgery I have permanently removed my braces. Massaging the area around the scars helps ease the ache in the wrists.

    This is a SUPER PAINFUL SITUATION. Sending someone home on Tylenol after sawing into their bones is INHUMANE. I am 4 weeks post op and still in pain 24/7 despite pain meds. This is hell!

      Hey Nicola, That’s a God awful way to be treated. I had the surgery with the titanium plate and screws. I had a prescription for Oxycodone. Yet the pharmacy (Walgreens) DID NOT want to fill it ) My granddaughter had to get an attitude. What the hell is wrong with ppl. The RX caused the pain to ease up but they made me sleep a lot.. Sorry you were not given proper meds Nicole. 😢

    Fractured right wrist, had surgery with plate and screws. Cast for 2 weeks now have plastic splint. The splint was done the same day I had stitches removed, and the pressure of the splint against the incision was very painful, to the point I had to remove it occasionally. Go for a follow-up tomorrow, I hope all is going well. Most people who hear about a fractured wrist don't appreciate the pain and suffering involved, especially if you live alone and have no help. Thanks for the informative video.

    I love your videos! They’re so informative! I’m so happy 😀 that I found your videos! I have screws and a plate in my wrist do to a wrist fracture. I have a TKR in my left knee that failed and I have to have a revision done. How do you determine what type of component to use for a TKR? Is there one type that you use over another type?

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  6 років тому +1

      Hi Gayle. The decision of which type of implant to use is primarily surgeon choice. Most companies have a wide variety of options and surgeons use the implants that they feel confident and comfortable with and often in conjunction with the contracts that their hospital has negotiated.

    Wonderfully informative videos ... thanks! X-Rays just showed I have a fractured scaphoid. My doctor spoke of reduced blood flow being an issue for healing for this bone. Is there anything I can do to help keep blood flow adequate so that healing and a proper bone union can take place?

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Gus. You are very welcome. The best thing you can do to increase your chances of healing is to be immobilized in a cast and stop smoking if you are a smoker. Other than that, it just takes time and this bone can be a little stubborn like your doctor told you. Good luck and keep us posted. Thanks for watching.

      @@TalkingWithDocs Thanks for the reply. I can't get in to a local Orthopedic surgeon until next week. I am currently wearing a $20 stabilizing wrist brace I bought that has a Palmar splint on bottom. Is that reasonable for my non-displaced fractured scaphoid (waist location) for the time being? Is there any chance that would be enough immobilization for the six weeks or so? I am taking it easy and trying not to use that wrist at all. Thanks again for your time and the insightful videos.

    What great and informative videos. And fun! I had a major crushed wrist May 9, 2022, 2 surgeries 2 plates, about 40 pins, on both Radius and Ulnar bones. I was/am / have been a competitive bowler all my life. My 1st real and true love. My bowling ball weight is normally 15 lbs. My age 56. I hope and pray to heal and again bowling but my injuries are severe. What is your experience? Have you ever heard of a bowler breaking their wrist, undergoing er surgery, recovering and getting back to their sport with some normality? Thanks in advance for your response and help. wow, this video is from 3 years ago, but great advice, my question to you is i just had surgery for my distal radius , and from the pictures of the post op surgery , one of the screws goes all the way through the bone a bit..is that normal? or should of it been flush,like the other pictures i am seeing?, 7 days after my surgery and seems to be healing ok, just a little tingling, and my arm falls asleep sometimes, go back in 7 days to get my sutures out.

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  4 роки тому

      Hi terrip712. So sometimes the tip of the screw will go through the far side of the bone. Usually it is not an issue but sometimes it can irritate soft tissues in that location if it has gone far past the cortex of the bone. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

    Hi docs!
    I've undergone distal radius surgery 3 months before with K wires. Post 6 weeks, pins were removed and I started Physiotherapy for 15 days. Currently I do not have swelling and my hand appears to be normal. The only issue is I do not have movement from the wrist. Like up and down and side ways. Kindly advise what could be done or what's wrong as per your experience. Thank you!

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  6 років тому +1

      Hi Kiran. Without examining you or seeing your xrays it is difficult to give specific advice however 3 months after surgery it is not uncommon to still have some residual stiffness in your wrist. The main way to increase range of motion after a fracture is to continue with a supervised physiotherapy program and controlling the pain. Hope that helps

    Thank you so much for your informative videos you have been posting! I am commenting on this video today because I have a question and I cannot seem to find much information on it. I commented on one of your videos about two months ago asking about my broken wrist and you responded. I am emailing you today because I have fully recovered from my broken wrist and I am still getting a tremendous amount of pain in that wrist almost 7 weeks after getting my cast off. Is this normal? I am supposed to go back into my orthopedic in about 1-2 weeks from now for a final appointment but I was wondering if you had any information until then. For reference of my injury, I fell playing tennis and broke both bones in my wrist and slightly dislocated one of the bones. I did not need surgery. Hello Doctors. Thank you for detailed information about the wrist fracture. I have injured myself from one two days back. The doctor in the ER took an X-ray and put a cast on. He said that the wrist is broken and cast is needed. However it’s been 48 hours since the cast has been put. I still feel pain in the injured area. Is this normal. Generally how much time does it take for the pain to reduce? Will this heal normally. I am 39 years old.

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  5 років тому +1

      Hi Abhijeet. Usually a broken wrist will be sore for at least a couple of weeks. Keeping it elevated may help. We assume you are scheduled to see a surgeon to get a proper cast put on in replace of the splint. Usually 5-6 weeks in a cast depending on the fracture. Then physio. Good luck and thanks for watching.

    Doctors Zalzal and Weening,
    I discovered your UA-cam channel after I broke my wrist. I find I enjoy watching all your videos and love your sense of humor.
    I'm a 75 year old man and I'm 10 weeks out from distal radius fracture.
    I was given a cast as opposed to surgery. Radius seems to be healed, but I've got a lot of pain on
    the ulnar side when I twist my wrist. They tell me I've got ulnar positive/ulnar neutral alignment and
    my ulna sticks out as a big bump and the hand is now misaligned. It seems my radius shifted while in
    the cast and is now shorter than before. Any thoughts as to how I might want
    to proceed or how common the kind of pain I'm experiencing is after a wrist fracture? My orthopedics doctor
    thinks the pain is probably due to stiffness, but I'm not convinced that time is going to reduce the pain.
    It's very painful.
    Thank you,
    Eugene

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  Рік тому

      Hi Eugene. This is not uncommon as the radius usually loses some length after fracture making the ulna effectively longer. It will likely improve with time. If the pain is debilitating you can undergo an osteotomy to correct the length issue. Hopefully that is not necessary. Lots of physio for now. Thanks for watching and subscribing

    Hello, I am 2 weeks post-op distal radius fracture. I received a splint cast already, which surprised me being 50 yo Female. I was a bit dismayed to see my wrist a bit crooked looking and lots of swelling especially at my thumb. Is it normal to have a crooked appearance in the wrist and arm at this stage?

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  5 років тому +1

      Hi Kristine. Often the wrist will look crooked for quite some time and potentially permanently. The important thing to focus on is function. You will likely be followed with regular xrays to confirm the bones are healing. Then lots of physio! Good luck.

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  6 років тому

      The best way to assess that would be with a physical examination and a new xray. Often the soft tissues lag behind what the bone is doing. If it is related to stiffness, often more physiotherapy will help. If that failed to provide the answer you may benefit from a CT scan or an MRI. Hope that helps

    They said I had a comminuted fracture (said I shattered it) & I believe radius .. no doubt it was broken. Didn’t need a Dr. to tell me that lol.
    Surgery was something I didn’t want and it took more than half the time for them to tell me I could go without. The residents wanted to go all out and do surgery from the first time lol .. Dr. finally said he could not advise me, it could go either way, so it was my choice not to.
    I believe with surgery, it heals faster? Less PT or less time healing? I think. Anyway.. I did not want something in my wrist and glad I didn’t HALF to have surgery. (To be honest, I was afraid that something in my wrist would make it feel cold, all the time. Especially in winter. And I didn’t want that.
    I dumbly broken it roller skating when my wheels caught each other and I went straight down. After XX yrs of skating, I was a bit surprised I broken a bone. First one, ever. Boy did it HURT.
    Supination (I think) or making it go all the way over, is more my problem since mid-2021. Almost there. I guess the cast keeps it from going over all the way and that has been my biggest problem. All I got was Tylenol 3 (which was fine).
    Post-traumatic osteoarthrisis :O .. so far, I don’t have it.. when do you know?
    The largest problem is swelling and absolutely no mention from Dr. about it, and I still have it (probably because I still do PT, myself). Took me until xmas 2023 to get rings off and off, normally but it is still there. Family Dr. had zero idea about swelling.
    You know what you do during that time? STARVE.. I could not even open a yogurt. Thank GAWD for uber eats. Once a day I ate.

    Fractured my distal radius in two places. One is up my arm and the other is across the wrist. Now have a plate with eight screws. It's been two years now and still having trouble with pain in the rotation. Also when I push on my thumb it sends a sharp pain up my tendon I believe. Think thats where it. My surgeon is does not recomend removal. Even to do a push up still hurts to put weight on the wrist. Does this seem normal? And should I go ahead with another surgery to remove the hardware? Thanks and waiting for your reply. Again thankyou

      @TalkingWithDocs  5 років тому +1

      Hi Eddie. Thanks for your question. It is difficult to answer your question without examining you and your films. Having said that, the pain and dysfunction you are experiencing can be caused by the fracture itself or the hardware - and sometimes both. Having hardware removed does carry some inherent risks of surgery but in addition to that, it may not resolve the symptoms you are concerned about. If you are having a lot of trouble, it is not unreasonable to get a second opinion. Hope that helps. And thanks for watching

      Hi Ma Sue. It thankfully is still early in your recovery. Tendons can certainly run over the plate and become somewhat irritated. Did you have a carpal tunnel release? A lot of these types of symptoms will improve with time and physiotherapy. As long as the bone has united on xray usually it's just lots of hard work with your therapist. Having said that, some component of your injury may be irreversible and there can be some limitations after any fracture. Expectations are probably best discussed with your surgeon. Last resort is hardware removal but usually not for at least a year. Hope that helps.

    I broke my wrist Feb 25th went to emergency it was a fracture of distal end of radius. Cast doc the 28th put me in splint due to swelling. Got cast march 15th. Cast off april 9th, arm looked very deformed, I was put in a removable splint, and told to get physical therapy. It is now May 19th my arm is very deformed looking with a huge lump on the top of my hand and a HUGE PAINFUL mushy lump on the inside on the wrist at palm of my hand. They do not know what it is and said check back with us in three or four months. I even explained to them I am having excruciating pain numbness and tingling every morning. Is this normal for most ppl? Am I just freaking myself out?

    It may be common but it’s very scary and painful and takes a long time to heal. If you’re in your 60s, they don’t care if your wrist is very distorted for the rest of your life...They will just cast it and your wrist will be freakish for the remainder of your life and you will not be able to move your wrist back for the rest of your life. If you do not go the surgery route at first, you may have to re break it and go through surgery ( and more time off from work ) later because most orthos do a poor job of reduction.

I saw my Ortho 2 days later in his office. He said it needed surgery but allowed me to wait 2 1/2 weeks until my sister could come to my state as my husband had just passed away right after I broke my wrist Long story short, my wrist is neither freakish nor distorted,, it wasn’t scary, my pain through it all was managed by xl strength Tylenol, reduction was great. Hi Christy. Ultimately the only way to be certain if your wrist is broken or not is to have someone examine it - and ideally order an xray. If the pain is significant you should get it looked at.

    is glucosamine good after break? I've been taking daily with calcium.. just curious. I'm post op 4 days, so no follow up with my dr just yet

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  6 років тому

      Hi Your Mom. There is no evidence to show that glucosamine would help bone healing. A balanced diet providing recommended doses of calcium and vitamin D is always beneficial. Hope that helps.

      Hi drhawthorne53. Thanks for your comments. We will add it to our list however ankle fusion is a very uncommon procedure and we quite frankly do not get any questions about it.

    What is the best surgery for broken wrist even if it's 4 months

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  2 роки тому

      It really depends on the position of the broken fragments. If they are out of position they will likely require a plate and screws. Thanks for watching and subscribing

      Hi Jean. Yes carpal tunnel syndrome after a wrist fracture is a possibility. We assume that you may have suffered from this. Hopefully the symptoms have resolved. Thanks for your comment and for watching.

    Sir now my cast has removed.. It's a wrist fracture.. So now I am trying to all around to move my hand.. I feel so much pain.. Why. Doctor told me now your bone fracture healed.. How much it will take time like before... And my second question.. My fracture hand is thin as like before Why.. I am very scared.. Its will be fine or then 1 hand normal one hand thin 😓😫😭

      @TalkingWithDocs  3 роки тому

      Hi Aryan. Often after the cast is removed the hand and wrist will be very stiff. It will take a lot of physio and time. Some patients do not return to normal which is an unfortunate consequence of the injury itself. Hope that clarifies things. Thanks for watching, subscribing and sharing if you did.

    I'm soo scared..I'm a grown man of 48 and I honestly just want to cry! Sorry to be this dramatic..I fell and broke my wrist 6 weeks ago today.. A distal radius fracture nondislocated at the base of the ulnar styloid mildly comminuted..whatever that all means! When you don't have insurance they don't take the time to show you the xrays they just say you broke it and they have this convo in the waiting room with no privacy!! yep so much for HIPPA lol..Anyway..They put me in a sugar tong splint and said to see an ortho in 3 days..No Ins so I asked would this probably heal like this in 4-6 weeks they said yes but try to get an xray at the 6 week mark to make sure it did heal...it was non dislocated and I think I would have had a moment of pain if it somehow became dislocated during this time?? So here I am and I un wrapped the smelly splint and took out the dirty padding my arm looked icky, my lower arm was as flabby as a 92 year old lady..I'm being punished for always jiggling my mom's arm fat I guess! So when I try to turn my arm sideways like a karate chop position it hurts and felt odd..almost like bones were moving inside my arm but not painful moving..just feels off.. I know I need an xray asap to make sure it's safe to start movement.. is it normal to feel wonky once the splint/cast comes off? I'm very scared...

    wow, this video is from 3 years ago, but great advice, my question to you is i just had surgery for my distal radius , and from the pictures of the post op surgery , one of the screws goes all the way through the bone a bit..is that normal? or should of it been flush,like the other pictures i am seeing?, 7 days after my surgery and seems to be healing ok, just a little tinglingling, and my arm falls asleep sometimes, go back in 7 days to get my sutures out.

    • @TalkingWithDocs
      @TalkingWithDocs  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Tracy. See the response to your question above but the short answer is that if the screw goes a little though the far cortex it is usually not a significant issue. Thanks for watching.
