Blame China, Japan manufactured a lot of our consumer goods for years but once China developed and started providing lower cost labor, they took over that industry. As far as being the number one economy, the geography and demographics of Japan is definitely not on their side. It's hard for a country with a declining population of around 100 million to compete with a country of 300 million or 1 billion. Specially Empress Masato grew up in America. She was in America since 2 years old , the family went back to Japan after a few years, but they came back to New York when Masato was 15. She went to Harvard. So English and Japanese they both are her first languages.
