I knew the full-time composition faculty were not even vaguely happy with me, so I knew one movement of my master’s thesis had to show I could “play nice” and “follow the rules.” I had to do something traditional with twelve-note music and give them something they wanted to hear, and that’s the second act of my master’s thesis. Helps that it turned out really well. Figuring out how to get my lousy laptop-quality music notation software to produce anything resembling finger clicks and thumps has not been easy. Woodblocks are not the same thing, but they’ll do.
