- Season 2 of ART ISLAND opens with legendary Susan Crowe in her studio, Cannon Road Pottery. Filmmaker Zsofin Sheehy follows Susan through her home and 40-year pottery practice on Hornby Island. A self-professed "compulsive maker," Susan shares her process as a producer, how she motivates herself and keeps herself open to new ideas, techniques, and products. Above all, the life of friendship and family she has built in partnership with her creative practice provides an endless source of love, inspiration, and support.
[About Susan Crowe]
Susan Crowe was born on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. She attended St. Lawrence Craft and Design College in Brockville, Ontario from 1977-79, before moving to Vancouver, BC to further teach and practice pottery. In 1981 she moved to Hornby Island to do production for Bernard de Aguiar and SeaPeace Pottery. By 1984, Susan opened Cannon Road Pottery, and has been making work under this studio for the past 40 years. Today, Susan works with her son Silas in wholesale production of her work, though her other two children can throw, as well. She has eight grandchildren.

Hey Susan, thanks for sharing your work & life ❤
Susan, you are amazing! Thank you so much for sharing!
Greetings from Denmark! 🧡☮️
What a lovely woman! She made smile all through the video! Thank you!
Loved listening to you Susan. So sorry to hear about your husband. I'm guessing no matter how busy you are during the day you still have your lonely moments when you are alone at night.
I loved your story and how you are still building your home. Your mosaic floors are amazing (they remind me of artist Kaffe Fassett) and your pottery is awesome. I just found your online shop I to have a browse tomorrow and see what you have and maybe buy a small something which could be posted to Australia.. I know the postage rates are horrendous that's why I say a small something :). I am so glad you love what you do and that your family is around you. Big hugs from Western Australia...no doubt I will be re-watching this video as I've only just found this site.. thankyou xx From one hippy to another I send you hugs and wish you a very merry Christmas cheers Jenny
I bought many of your beautiful pots in the 80’s 90’s and 2000’s. They are still my favourite. There is no teapot like the one I am privileged to use daily. And the mugs you custom made for me to go with them are used constantly as well. Your work is beautiful and excellent quality. You are a blessing to the world and the people you touch. ❤😊

Lovely work, lovely artist. Inspiring !
Susan, you are a joy to watch living your life on this beautiful island surrounded by family and doing what you love. I tried pottery a long long time ago and my first attempt I made something and the teacher was so impressed. She said “no one ever throws the first time!” After that, I was never able to make anything again. And so I did hand stuff, like platters and animals. God bless you, Susan.
