Great video man! I've been in the RC hobby for 30 plus years but I've never done any airbrush work. I raced my RC10T a little bit back in the mid 90's and it was a blast! However, I dropped it to start building and racing my 1968 Dodge Dart drag car. I ended up having an accident on an ATC in 2000 that left me paralyzed from the chest down. But I made a special adaptive controller and I still enjoy driving my RC cars! Right now I have a 2wd brushless slash, a Tamiya land cruiser rock crawler and a TC4 that my friend is in the process of painting a 1970 Dodge Challenger body for... Although I don't get to drive them much I still enjoy collecting and customizing them! Anyways, thanks for the great video!
Excellent video. Funny how you draw and cut with your left hand but paint with your right. Great free hand work. Would love to actually meet up at a race some day. Your a great attribute to this hobby.
Robert Storley I didn't notice that he draws and cuts with his left and paints with his right hand. I do the exact same thing although I am trying to make myself paint with my left hand because I should be able to paint better with my left hand because it is the hand I write with. I painted with my right hand when i used rattle cans and it stuck when I switched to airbrush. Even if I am writing something with the airbrush it comes out ok with my right hand if I try to write with a pen with my right hand good luck lol
Thanks for sharing Ryan, excellent video to help novice wannabe airbrushers like myself lol There's a lot of gratification when you're done painting and finally get to rip the plastic off !! Love your videos Dude !!!
I loved watching this! I’ve been getting into the hobby! Love the content that’s out there! This is by all means a compliment Ryan! You remind me of a Twitch streamer ChocoTaco! You’re chill and really cool like him!
This video was SOOO awesome and helpful... up until now I have been using Tamiya tape for curves and blue painter's tape, and rattle cans... I may look into getting an air brush soon for fading colors or doing shadows and such... and eventually might look into trying the liquid mask as well. One thing you should try, before you do the final color, maybe try some Tamiya Lame Flake, it's a clear with multicolor flake in it, amd jist looks awesome backed with pearl white, metallic or fluorescent colors... I have also used it to lightly coat the windows after peeiling window masks. It makes the clear a touch hazy, but when the light hits the body the windows light up with beautiful sparkles... Do you ever paint bodies for other people, or just your own? Thanks for the video!
Best RC paint video I have seen on you tube. I really wish i would have watched this before my last attempt at a paint job. Now you just need to make a drive faster video!
Here’s a couple of tips that always worked well for me: I always used to trim the body first, then as part of the masking process, would put a skirt of masking tape around the perimeter of the body. Depending on the body/application, you can clearly see where you need to trim - and let’s be honest, it would totally suck to have a killer paint job totally ruined by a mistake made trimming the body after the fact. The other thing is that I could neatly sand the edges for a smooth feel all the way around. I haven’t kept up with what’s available today for RC (Pactra was the Main brand back then), but I used to use acrylic-based Createx paints - they offered a wider variety of colors, and were very easy on the internal seals of the airbrush. As an on-road racer, I always kept a can of Pactra spray paint in white and black handy. I don’t know what it was about the formulation of those two colors, but they were the best at allowing for easy cleanup of the tire dust after runs. If you run Nitro, the RC paint formulation also seals and protects your acrylic paint underneath from being eaten by fuel residue.
You are a pro I'd pay you to paint, just one thing though, I think you should cut the scrap from the body even before you wash it because after the paint it may crack and peel while doing so!!!
Damn new b6 and b64 doing big things man. Keep up the good work man enjoying the videos. Makes it even better your in Florida and out there recording at the races.

great video, curious why you don't trim the body before painting? I find it easier to drill body holes and trim, then paint, not sure why most folks choose to paint first them trim. What am I missing?
Not all cars has body holes, for example TLR 22 uses hook and loop fastener, to hold the body on. But for sure, when you have body holes, you have to mark them before paint.
Hey Ryan nice paint job just curious what are you using for lexan body airbrush painting these days what brand, additives for adhesion if any and coats I’m new to airbrushing
Sometimes the ‘sharp’ edges of the body affect how much paint is (collected/attached) due the spraying. The last few years have been really tough. Thank you for ALL your great videos and the helpful advice in them....👍
Dumb question... after spraying the liquid mask on how hard is to cut your design i:e is it pretty easy to keep a smooth cut or does the knife drag bad? That being said would a scalpel type tip work better? Im afraid of cuting to deep
Justin Lamb I think it’s just because they get beat up so much and their really an inside or outside to it like the body so paint will be exposed to all the crashes and start to flake off
@@silentassassin1108 Exactly this. I used to race 1:10 buggies in the 90s and we'd consider wings as disposable items. Buy a stack of universal wings, maybe use up some decals and throw your race number on there, but that's it :)

Nicely done on these videos! I used to race when I was a kid and freshman at college. Looking to get back into the hobby, but only used spray cans as a kid. Question: What compressor do you use and do you need a hood ventilation when painting these RC bodies inside with an airgun? thanks
Hope you get setup and back to the track soon man! I use a pancake compressor from Harbor Freight and drop the PSI down to about 45. I always paint outside so I don't need any special ventilation equipment
I like using a rounded blade for cutting the mask. It helps keep an even "contact patch" for cutting and for me helps to control the cut without deeply scoring the body.
Liquid mass is complete junk. It is only for professionals. If you are a rookie, you will ruin your RC car body do not attempt not unless you are a professional with using liquid mask.
Hey! I had that transmitter when I was a kid. The one on the lower shelf. What's the make and model of it? I recognize it but don't remember the name. 0:17 I got it along with a Futaba FXT Stadium Truck for Christmas one year. I guess it would have been 30 years ago. I would have been 10. I gave up presents from each of them so that they could pool the money into one big present. Nice video man.. Now I know i can make a design on my trucks ..lmao.I was always good at flip flop or solid colors but never knew about the mask.!!!!!! I'm so excited and I got a new truggy just few days ago,..!!! still clear,!!!!!! nice job.!
So is it ALWAYS dark colors first or was black the first color because it’s the most background color in this scheme? Let’s just say for some reason someone wanted to do this same scheme but outline the flames with black, would they then paint those flame outlines first?
I did a lot of RC a while back and after cleaning the inside of the body we would use very thin sandpaper to scratch where we would paint so it would adhere better, it wasn't visible at all once the paint dried. Don't sand windows though. :)
Can you send me a link to the airbrush you are using please? Also- you have incredible content! I look froward to all the new vids to come. Thanks in advance
I know this might be a stupid question, but I've been looking at other videos and I was wondering will blue painter's tape work the same. I was planning to cover most of the body in the blue painter's tape then but out the design from there but I wasn't sure if it would work as well or the same. Thanks! PS: It's gonna be a flame design like this, but a little simpler like without the shadows. Also going to do it in 3 colors for a stadium truck body.
Im about to be spraying my first body for the first time ever and know absolutely nothing about it.. i noticed after you finished painting you didnt cover the entire inside with anything to protect the paint.. like i notice when i buy a already painted body it has like some sort of white covering. Assuming thats so it doesnt get scratched easily. What do they use for that?
Thanks a lot for this tutorial! Just two questions: How many layers of each colors did you spray? Would it be possible to already cut all the separations then peel when needed or the paint will go into the interstices?
Hey Ryan! Thanks very much for ALL your videos! I've been getting back into the hobby after a 14 year hiatus and you're videos have been tremendously helpful! I do have one question. I noticed you're using Duratrax paints in this video. I'm trying to find Lacquer based paint for lexan bodies, and having trouble finding any online. Where do you get the Duratrax bottles of paint for your air brush? Thanks again Ryan!
Hi Ryan - do you use the laquer thinner with the liquid mask? If so, what proportions? Also - do you know what size needle your airbrush has and what air pressure? Thanks.
Great tips Ryan, I’m just getting into racing going to run my silly slashes this year but next year lol watch out...love your new 1/8 e buggy....think I’m going to follow your route and go with the A team. Instead of tlR
Ryan I found your page and habe been watching all your videos. I really enjoy them and I think they appeal from the rc newbie to the veteran. I am curious when you do the window trim how do you keep the thickness on the line so perfect?
I’m just getting back into RC and am soaking up your videos. I know this one is an older video but I’ve painted 2 bodies for my 22 5.0 in the last 2 weeks and I’m thinking I’m at my limit in skill with a rattle can. Do you have an airbrush kit you recommend that comes with a compressor and gun, or ala-carte combo you like? Thanks
Hi Ryan, great video, this was the first time I saw the end to end process. Really nice looking design and end product. How long would you say the whole process takes? I get the idea it's a few hours per day over two or three days?
this is nice, i have been into 3d printing for a while now, over a year...was gonna get into 3d modeling painting, printed old man logan..rc uav is my main foccus...this is nice tho
What kind of compressor do you have, and what PSI are you using? I just got into Airbrushing my bodies a couple months ago, and have been using Faskolor and Wicked paints. But I can't seem to get the paint to flow right, or it's too thick. I went back to rattle cans for now but have about $800 tied up in airbrushes and a TC20T air compressor with tank. I don't want to get discouraged, but I don't want to be screwing up body after body. Are there any polycarbonate airbrush paints that you can spray straight from the bottle without having to reduce?
What PSI do you shoot at? I tried painting my b6.2 body last week and kept getting blow outs, I had the compressor set to 30psi output but it was spotty at best. And then I couldnt get flow through the gun
All of my paints are linked in the description for anyone who was wondering where to find them!

I am not able to find the paints listed. Nor the airbrush system, maybe I am missing it somewhere. Great video as always!!

Hey Ryan love your videos! I use my Cricut to make stencils for my bodies. It’s not the free hand that you do but it makes for some awesome designs.
DarinDerb I got one of those that’s a really good idea
I wish I had one. Those things will scale your designs to different sizes, won't they? I need some Earnhardt '3's in different sizes.
Awesome tutorial! 🙌Very clear thank you👍😁
I’m just getting back into RC and am soaking up your videos.
Thanks
Great video brother , great showing at SS also
The paint looks awesome
Thanks man! It was a fun day with some fresh paint for the cars :D
Why flames on most designs?
Cool,awesome video good production.....
Thanks 🙏
Thanks for another great video. Love your channel. When Im brave enough I will give it ago.
Have you tried proline liquid mask?
What kind of compressor do you have, and what PSI are you using? I just got into Airbrushing my bodies a couple months ago, and have been using Faskolor and Wicked paints. But I can't seem to get the paint to flow right, or it's too thick. I went back to rattle cans for now but have about $800 tied up in airbrushes and a TC20T air compressor with tank. I don't want to get discouraged, but I don't want to be screwing up body after body. Are there any polycarbonate airbrush paints that you can spray straight from the bottle without having to reduce?
What liquid mask do you use for airbrush spraying?
what do you clean airbrush with after using polycarbonate paint?
I use a lacquer thinner!
What PSI do you shoot at? I tried painting my b6.2 body last week and kept getting blow outs, I had the compressor set to 30psi output but it was spotty at best. And then I couldnt get flow through the gun
Great video. Very detailed thank you
Did you thin your duratrax airbrush paints with the lacquer thinner as well?
You don't wear a respirator?
Nice paint ryan
hey what liquid mask are you using i tried to reduce my liquid mask to spray in my air brush but it just ruined my liquid mask didn't mix at all.
