Thank you so much to Burton Cummings. I'm touched by what he says about me and my song.

David Forman David, Regardless of your initial feelings of someone else changing the feel and arrangement of your "child" (which is how all true, gifted composers treat the product of thier love for melody, chords, and a heartfelt lyric) were it not for Burton Cummings version of this BEAUTIFUL composition of yours,.... I would never have discovered this Rembrandt of 45 rpm art. I have been playing and singing it ever since. It is one of the few songs alongside the Johnny Mercer/Barry Mannilow composition "When October Goes" that gives me fear everytime I perform it in that it taps into the softest spot of a persons heart and soul, mine especially, and uncorks the memories of childhood, fantasies, hopes, dreams and the love of family members now departed. Some nights my voice chokes off for fighting back tears, for I remember my departed mother wiping dishes as she listened to Burtons version with me for the first time. SHE was visibly touched. She looked at her 19 yr. old son and said, " Stevie......those are BEAUTIFUL lyrics. This is the type of song that I grew up with. This isn't just a song: it is true art in the highest form." My mom has been gone 18 yrs. now. I think of her every time I hear or play this song. Through the Cummings version I found yours. As a retired rock vocalist, I am in the process of having arrangements created for strings and horns Ellington style so that I may record your song on my first Jazz CD at 56 years old. Songs need to mean something when I have waited 37 years to record. I have but 12 to choose from. Yours HAD to be one. For not only does it stand out from the thousands of songs I was forced to cull from, but when I see my Mother again I would not want to have to explain to her why I had not heeded her advice for it's inclusion. Thank you, Mr. Forman. Both your song and Burton's voice changed my life. (PS When I met Burton in 1987, he told me out off ALL the million selling songs he wrote, he told me he would bargain much to be able to have written the "standing on the corner kissing Brenda Lee" passages of your touching work.)

@@davidforman6790 I honestly do understand how his changes to the chorus might startle the hell out the songwriter. Hard for me to objectively judge which is better, since I've been hearing it the other way for soooo very long, and it's ingrained.

Thank you for this note. Tears in my eyes. And, wow, I'd love to hear your recording. If I had the chance, I'd change "crying so hard" to "fighting so hard." Oh, well!

As someone who grew up listening to the Guess Who (hometown heroes here in Winnipeg) and then followed Burton Cummings career, I was always pleased that he'd sing other people's songs in addition to recording his own compositions. I think it shows a side of your artistry when you interpret songs instead of just writing for your voice. And this song may have been Burton's best take on another person's work.
I knew Dream of a Child was composed by another artist but never, until today, had any idea who Davis Forman was. Finally I've heard this great song from the source. It truly is a great piece of work. You may think that Burton's cover is better or worse but regardless, this song deserves a wider audience and he gave it a shot at that.

This is a fantastic song -- brings tears to my eyes. That happened last Thursday in Chicago watching Burton Cummings doing this song. He considers this one of the best lyrics ever written - and says it EVERY TIME he plays your song. This song is a massive fan favorite in his concerts. His album of this name is also a fan favorite - and he has 75,000 fans on Facebook. We all thank you for this masterpiece - and we thank Burton for bringing it to so many..... I remain in awe of what you did writing this - It stirs so many long lost thoughts in so many ways....

Gorgeous song, great album including the best version of "One Fine Day" ever recorded too. And so much of the Little Isidore stuff is brilliant. Forever a fan. Thank you.

to david forman, not sure i can adequately express my sentiments but i'm compelled to: about 40 years ago i was at a college function where they had a table of unreleased promo albums for free. i randomly plucked your album and still remember how i'd hoped it'd be something good, but had no expectations. of course it blew me away then & continues to be an all-time favorite (still have it). long ago my curiosity had me wondering what ever happened to this talented musician? did he have any more music out there? i'd tried to find out but was unsuccessful. fast forward four decades to just a few days ago, when i'm watching MAN ON WIRE and i see/hear this guy playing DREAM OF A CHILD. it took me a second, as out of context that it was, but i recognized your voice (hasn't changed a bit) and piano immediately - almost lost my shit - IT'S HIM! wait - what in the hell would david foreman be doing in this documentary??? (of course, i watch on & see how you fit into the picture...) warmed to know your life continued to unfold & reward you with what sounds like a bountiful journey. thrilled to be able to thank and honor you "personally" for the beauty you added to the world when you cut your album. and yes, dream of a child is STUNNING, but SEVEN SISTERS and MARRIAGE OF NAPOLEON? ... SPECTACULAR! speechless....... awe..... thanks for making our planet a better place! :-)

Very nice - with a lesser voice this could be maudlin, but David really puts it across.
A couple of notes: this album was on a list of 20 best unknown albums of the rock/pop era (I think it was either Rolling stone or The Guardian); this is the first time I've had a chance to hear it. Also, David's later career incarnation (for those unaware) is as Little Isidore of Little Isidore & The Inquisitors, perhaps the best group over the last 20 years recreating the sound and feel of 1950s-1060s doo-wop and r&b, including some amazing original songs that you'll wish were hits back then. What a body of work - and what range!

Did you write 'abortion' to describe Cummings' rendition??? FYI, Cummings has done a fine job of covering your well-written tune, and the horn accompaniment does nothing to distract from the tune's emotion. If you suffered a stroke listening to Cummings' rendition, then it's likely you looked in the mirror while sober to see that bizarre attire you affect onstage as 'Little Isadore' ... a scene that cries out for medical intervention in a hurry.

    "Selling golden earrings
    to Mrs. Mickey Mantle
    trying to be gentle
    while I
    stuck it in her ear"
This song is sacriligeous and profane!

This song really deserved treatment from a higher quality artist then Mr. Cummings. I would have loved to see how someone such as Scott Walker would have interpreted this.....even Bowie, Lou Reed.
