Would want an episode on "Weird 70s food" like jelly molds. Wierd food by decades would be pretty cool as a series.
It's already out there. Try a quick search for 50's or 70's jello foods. Some of them LOOK interesting but, personally? I'd consign them to the bin. 😯

I remember as a kid in the 80s you couldn’t watch any sitcom without there being an episode about how much the family hated when mom made meatloaf. Everyone would groan, “Not meatloaf AGAIN!” I love meatloaf. Other than liver I never complained about what mom or dad (he cooked too) would prepare for dinner.
There was also a reference in Batman: Mask of the Phantasm too:
The Joker : What? Meat loaf again? Oh, I had it for lunch.
One thing I hated growing up where the hamburger patties with a side of fried potatoes! Mom made that pretty often on weeknights and we grew tired of it fast!!!
@@RedRoseSeptember22 Were the potatoes cut into chip shapes (like a circle)?
It was one of the most empowering ROSANNE episodes where she takes her daughter's middle school home ec class to the supermarket to teach them how to feed 6 for under $10 (she used potato chips for binder). And yes, the oldest said "Meat loaf again?" "That's how you know it's done." replied Roseanne to the class.

Meatloaf, fried chicken, and pot roast are arguably classic Sunday dinners in America, and they are each perfectly suited for mashed potatoes. ✔🏁⬆👍
Yep! Mashed potatoes or mac n' cheese! Yum!
@@RedRoseSeptember22 yea
My parents Jamaican so I wasn’t eating all that on Sunday. Never had pot roast or meatloaf. And those food are popular in the south/Midwest. Idk anybody who eat that in nyc

I feel like I need to clarify the tea time comment. Tea time is what Americans call dinner in a lot of the UK especially in Wales. I'm not sure it has anything to do with drinking tea.
Yeah, "tea" was a meal, not the neighbor lady coming over to gossip over a cuppa and a slice of cake.
That is correct 😅
I cannot believe that I lived this long before being informed of this. I am 31 and from the US, always assumed tea time was like a before lunch thing. Thank you for the information, now I know that it actually means dinner.
My mom used the recipe on the back of a Quaker Oats box. She never used the ketchup topping. The Germans in Ohio & Kentucky made goetta, which was similar to scrapple, but used oatmeal instead of cornmeal
🤢🤮
Absolutely love goetta!
I love this! I had to go to KY for work a few years ago and when we went for breakfast, I asked if they had corned beef hash and the waitress said "no, but we have Goetta". I said sure, and it did not disappoint! I had to visit that job site twice a month for about six months and at every breakfast, I'd order the Goetta. It's pretty much the only place I've seen it.

Growing up, whenever we had meatloaf for Sunday dinners we always asked which grandparent was cooking. If 100% Sicilian Pop made, it would be a yummy giant meatball. If my 3rd generation American Nonna made it, it tasted like a delish meatloaf. lol
The origin of hamburger helper would be a cool dinner staple origin story!
We had that so many times growing up because it was a cheap, affordable meal lol. Same with pastaroni and ricearoni lol.
It has its origins in the 70s, as a response to inflation and meat price hikes
My mom was an awful cook. But one thing she could make was a mean meatloaf. That alone almost made up for her bad cooking, _almost_ lol. Have yet to find anyone they can compete with her’s and to this day, meatloaf is my favorite dish for that reason alone
Oh man, my mom made a mean meatloaf, and the ketchup on top was so amazing. I haven’t made it in years, but that’s about to change! Thanks for this awesome video and reminding me of how much I miss eating this for dinner! ❤
Turkey meatloaf also fire
Man the right type of ketchup can take a meatloaf to new heights.
Really do enjoy learning the background story of these awesome foods.
Worcestershire sauce is an absolute must for any self-respecting meatloaf, and mixing brown sugar with the ketchup for the topping is fantastic! BTW crushed saltines for the thickener is best.
try crushed up special K. It keeps a lot of moisture with a little bit of sweetness.
oatmeal is my go to
Wow it sounds delicious thanks for the tip
I’ve never made one before but your suggestion will help me make a yummy one for sure 👍😬
Def a splash of the dub sauce. Also I do a mix of ketchup, brown sugar and balsamic vinaigrette to coat the top, it’s jumping. Dont knock it until you try it
What a coincidence that I was thinking of making myself meatloaf for tomorrow's dinner, then Weird History Food uploads about it.
Same here. Definitely making meatloaf tomorrow!😀
Mind readers they be. 😁

I remember back when I was a kid half the kids would have cold meatloaf sandwiches for lunch... _sooo_ good!
Yep mom would pack me a cold meatloaf sandwich on white bread in a paper bag. I never liked it. Love meatloaf, just not cold. And this was way before the microwave. Like eating a cold hamburger
I absolutely love a cold meatloaf sandwich.
I make em for my kids as sliders on hawian rolls
BEST way to eat meatloaf, gotta have lots of ketchup on it though.
I could go for some meatloaf and mashed potatoes right about now.
Some good comfort food for sure
I’d love to try it someday
it's great if you cook it a muffin tray. Everyone get's a crispy edge. You can make a volcano of mashed potatoes then stuff it with a meatloaf muffin lol. If you're feeling extra crazy you can pour some brown gravy over it all.
My dad and aunt talk frequently about grandma’s “oat-loaf” because it seemed to have more oats than meat in it. Grandma and grandpa were both teachers in rural Kansas in the 50’s and 60’s. Grandma grew up during the depression. Oats were cheap.

Loved the way you mentioned Meat Loaf the singer throughout the episode....
I never turned down a plate of meatloaf! Fun fact: that was my FAVORITE dish my mother made growing up. Never understood the hate it got. Maybe people just needed to eat good meatloaf. Never had it with gravy though. We always had the bottle of Huntz on the table. Great episode btw
Having grown up in the Mid-Atlantic, I never thought of scrapple as meat loaf. It's a type of sausage. And, yes, in other countries it is common to add grain to a sausage to stretch it. One correction, though: it's traditionally made with two grains. It's a combo of flour, buckwheat and/or corn. Different regions have their preferred combo of grains and spices.
I'm convinced that people who don't like meatloaf haven't had a good one.
Which would be one without breadcrumbs. I've made them with potatoes; I have made them with sweet potatoes and apples instead. Now - those are good.
A+ video!

I am 44 yrs old and still love meatloaf to this day. All I know is that without it we would be a clustered mess that we have to deal with on a regular basis and I hope we can all just enjoy it. I hope we're able to put up with the crazy of it without the chaos of the holiday. I love that we are able to dig the holiday and hope for the best each year before. I dunno, it rocks. ❣️😁
I love meat loaf. But thought it strange you did not mention the use of Lipton dry onion soup mix to season the meat mix, they even still print a meatloaf recipe on the box or on the inside envelopes of the soup mix. Can't make good meatloaf without the dry onion soup!

Scrapple is delicious. Crispy meat hash brown. Also, it's a lot of work, but Cook's Country has the best meatloaf recipe ever.
My mom wasn't much of a cook, but she experimented with the basic meatloaf, with seasonings, filler and Heinz ketchup. Unfortunately, the only ingredients I remember were ground beef, Heinz and barley. By the time I thought to ask her recipe, she had forgotten it. Best meatloaf I've ever had.

Pot Roast and Meatloaf are both of my favorite meat dishes, along with Slow Cooker Beef Stew, yummy!
Pot roast for the win but I do love a good meatloaf too. Mine has Louisiana hot sauce and no ketchup on top because my husband doesn't like it glazed
It was a very interesting history of meatloaf! My mom would use Quaker Oats, eggs, onion soup mix, and tomato soup for her meatloaf.
In Romania, we eat something similar to this on Easter. It is kind of a haggis
My grandma loves making Scrapple, makes sense since she lived her whole life in mostly Amish country Pennsylvania. I used to have it all the time with either ketchup or gravy and when cooked by the right person it’s delicious.
In the Appalachians we call Scrapple, Livermush. My Grandma made her own, and it was so good!!!
Both are good! All depends on what you're in the mood for ♥
I enjoy a good meatloaf dinner once in awhile. Two thick slices served with a thick mushroom gravy on top of a bed of redskin mashed potatoes and some steamed broccoli or green beans as a side vegetable! 😋♥️😎👍

At 10:59 on the video.....
I watched this video with my mother (when watching the second time). That cookbook at 10:59 (365 Ways to Cook Hamburger by Doyne Nickerson) was given to her for a wedding present.
One more comment. I collect cookbooks mostly from the 1920s through the early 1970s though I do have one from 1895 and 1900. You can tell the west years between the haves and have nots. The more “fancy” cookbooks use a tremendous amount of meat while the ones for the “average joes” are all about how to stretch ones dollar. The other thing I find fascinating is how much frying in lard and other types of fats were used. Nothing was really processed and these “bibles of domestic CEOs” had it going on with how to present food properly, how to maximize flavor and so on. It’s such a fascinating look at history and society.
But stuffed mice? Hmmmm. Well I guess there were a lot so why not. 😂
A good meat loaf, mashed potatoes and roasted carrots makes a simple yet amazing meal.
I LOVE meatloaf!! So much so, I perfected my own version of it and everyone loves it. Ketchup, mustard, and brown sugar (with a little Worcestershire & Tabasco) makes the perfect glaze to pour on top
Hmm, I've got some minced beef, a jar of smokey north African cooking sauce in the fridge and 3 long days at work coming up. I'm sure that I could bodge a tasty treat thanks to your inspiration.👍 PS, adding harissa paste and couscous makes it very "Moorish".
A history of Hamburger Helper would be interesting.

I am in my 60s and my mom added Quacker oats. Loved her meatloaf.
I love making a good meatloaf and eating it. A lot of things really but there's always that craving for the loaf comes up... Few ingredients of the hundreds of combos I've tried that work the best for meat loaf are Oats for your starch, a can of Rotel (you need to cook it a while in with some onions and whatever extra peppers, seasoning, other stuff) and always smear a little ketchup on top before you cook it so you get a nice sweet glaze. I put a lot of things in it or make gravy also for it and mash taters but I always do that for the Meatloaf.

I'm with Randy.
I have my own creation that combines meatloaf and pizza. I mix in ground sausage with the regular meatloaf mix along side oregano basil garlic powder and onion powder. From there this has evolved - I started out by gently flattening the meat out on wax paper and then adding sauce cheese and my favorite meaty toppings like pepperoni salami sausage and bacon, then use the paper to roll it up and into a pan where it got covered in more sauce to keep the meat moist then covered and into the oven. once the middle reaches the right temperature top with more cheese and if you like toppings like olives or shrooms (i dont) they are added here and let the cheese brown.
This is a LOT of work even with how delicious it is. I have now started instead layering the meat directly into a loaf pan lasagna style. meat sauce cheese toppings repeat
this is a lot less work and just as delicious as well as i dont end up with a loaf bigger than my baking dish.
CliffNotes came from Nebraska (Lincoln, Nebraska).

The caveat people tend to forget is that ubiquitous meatloaf… is simply a giant hamburger! (Who couldn’t love that?) 🤤🍔
