Good to know that lake has good pike and small mouth. Can’t wait to do some fishing there soon.

im really biased so i dont mean to sound snooty, but i was curious as to the reason you released all those pike? in that lake theres no bag limit and no size restrictions on pike because their a non native nuisance species in that lake. so as best practice it would behoove those who fish pike on martin lake to harvest them, im a fairly new resident so i may be in over my waiters on the topic maybe when this was filmed there was a population concern for the pike? but again im really biased against catch and release fishing so thats on me really for getting urked by the video (aha which is still great btw im learning lots of things from your channel). I realize im generally an outlier on the topic of fishing to eat as i even take pride to fish and harvest carp (bleed em out and get ready for the boniest fillet you can imagine haha).

Fair enough and thanks for your candor. Keep in mind the guy in the boat with me on this video is the second in command for the state fish hatchery system, and that the team we filmed that day sampling the lake was the CPW managing biologist and her team. Furthermore, nothing in that lake, starting from the lake itself is native; every aspect of that system is man-made including all the species in there except white suckers. It would only behoove those that don't enjoy pike fishing to harvest them all, and many anglers enjoy the places they can target pike, to the point pike shows are some of our most watched. Pike generally benefit from some harvest to keep their population dynamics in check, so there is a good argument for harvesting some of the smaller pike, but that lake, at least at the time this was filmed had a good cross section of size and age class indicating reasonable balance. Pike are a Federal issue on the western slope relating back to the endangered species act of 1974 and some further legislation, but on the eastern slope it is up to CPW to decide. Hence, some lakes are even managed intentionally for pike. For the record I love to eat fish and have even eaten carp (and lots of pike), but I still release 95% of the fish I catch.

Have a question to ask. Do the place allows bellyboat to go fishing?

We'd say Spinney, 11 Mile, or Lathrop are the closest. In our experience Spinney pike are very willing to bite mid-sized jerkbaits; focus on the greenest shallow grass flats/bats with good access to deeper water. We do guide but we're not licensed on any pike waters.

Hello there! We are planning a trip Friday the 16th to that Sunday. We are bank fishermen. But I myself just got into bass fishing, would you still recommend the jerkbait? What colors should I use? Also would you recommend like wacky rig? Texas rigging some creature baits?

Yes I would be throwing a jerk bait for several species there. I'd also consider ripping a lipless crankbait or working a topwater, all over weedbeds. A texas or whacky rig would possibly get bites but the weeds may be heavy...you'll need some stout rods and line. As for colors, I'd work bright colors or chrome...lots of "teeth" in that lake.
