  • The shortest hiking route to the eruption site is a 20 km return trip, parking at the trail head on P2. The hike takes 6-8 hours in total plus the time you spend at the site
    July 15, 2023 Reykjanes - eruption area closed!
    The Police Commissioner in Reykjanes has announced for security reasons to close the whole area around this eruption and the ones from 2021 and 2022. Situation will be reviewed on July 16. Respect the closure!

    The eruption began on 10.07.2023 Monday afternoon, local time, after thousands of earthquakes in the area, meteorological authorities said.
    Aerial footage showed streams of orange molten lava and clouds of gas spewing from a snaking fissure about 900 metres long.
    The volcano, located in an uninhabited valley near the Litli-Hrútur mountain about 30 kilometres south-west of Reykjavik, last erupted about 11 months ago.
    Iceland's nearby international Keflavik Airport remained open on Tuesday.
    Previous eruptions in 2021 and 2022 occurred without causing damage or disruptions to flights.
    The Icelandic Meteorological Office said the eruption was initially more explosive than the previous two.
    The Litli Hrutur volcano, which lies some 60 km (37 miles) from the country's capital, has attracted interest with some people trying to get closer to the site, a 9-kilometre (5.6 miles) uphill walk from the nearest car park.

    This morning I started my day with the volcano as I usually do. I watch your video of the 2021 spatter cone where people were ridiculously close. It was fascinating and fun to watch... good documentation. This is art. I was really impressed with the way you used aperture to control the movement from light to dark when you move from the long view of the sun and the mountains and rolled the camera down to the flowing lava so that area came up into visibility .... really beautiful... thank you for what you do.. it allows those of us who cannot be there to share in the experience.

    Since the area is now closed - when did you manage to capture those views? The cone is fairly large yet - so it must have been some time after the eruption started.
    Thank you for taking all these efforts to share the event with the outside world!

    It's a lot of lava from a relatively small volcano.

  • @robertslugg8361
    @robertslugg8361 Рік тому

    Superb shots. Time permitting, I am wondering if others, along with myself, would like to see what it happening down at the terminal end of the flow, because in the long run where that lava ends up is the most important part. Really interesting to see how the level of the lava slowing creeps higher and higher up the side of those hills. Almost makes me wonder if in the future that they need to place a bunch of elevation markers there to keep track. Those who followed geldingahoweveryouspellit recall that the first two viewing hills ended up under the shield of lava that was spewed out by Nar. It would not surprise me if that smaller hill where the lava is currently dividing ends up completely under the flows once the western valley fills.

    • @OleOlson
      @OleOlson Рік тому

      @@quietone748 Smoke is toxic, sure. But some people smoke cigarettes their whole life. Others sit by campfires 5 nights a week year round. There's toxic, and there's deadly, and it's important to distinguish between them.
      The only real danger comes from the volcano belching gasses that can kill people on the spot. The rest is just a mild (to moderate) irritant.
