The Fagradalsfjall Volcano Revisited With a Thermal Drone Camera

  • Shot with the thermal drone over the largest crater from the 2021 eruption and it's possible to see how it has cooled down. I have to admit that i had some problems there and failed to get all the shots I wanted due to all this switching back and forth between the cameras, however, it was sunny and therefore not the best conditions for thermal view so it's a good reason for me to go back soon.

@@JustIcelandic Temperature scale is a great idea. I was going to write a comment about it, but well... I was 5 hours late. I don't know how your camera works exactly, but in many models you can chose a point on a screen from where camera will read more precise temperature. In more static shots like in 0:49 it would work. But whether you add this, or temperature scale it still will be amazing.

Dark surfaces heat up a lot more in the sun than lighter ones, so to get a better idea of residual heat from the eruption, filming in early morning, especially under heavy overcast might be your best bet. I realize you don't get much darkness in late May, so your result may be better at other times of the year. But don't stop now! I love all your videos!

    • @MrRheron

As an infrared interpreter, experienced in wildfire detection and mapping, I would add that dark colored rocks with a south or west facing aspect then to receive more solar heating than the surrounding land forms, thus showing a higher relative heat. Scanning at different times of day may result in a different image.

interesting how the lip and side are still showing signs of heat but nothing in the crater , you would have thought it would be the other way about but then again i guess that a lot of the rim and sides have now fallen in as they cool and get brittle and could be possibly hiding any remaining heat.
the lava flows were as hot as i expected and i assume that you had a good scan around the hills looking for any remaining hot spots ? , as wasnt there some fears about vip hill in the first eruption due to the ground feeling warm in areas with the grass dyeing off ?.
i think ill have to watch this again later on the big screen when i have a bit more time , hopefully you will do more vids in the area , and how many batteries did you go through with having to switch back and forth and the fly overs ?.

    Thanks!!!
You are going from strength to greater strength in how you are using the new drone. ♥️♥️♥️
I’d wondered whether the outer part of the cone was hotter than the inner part. 🙂 It’d be interesting to know why - what’s the relationship between this and how a cone grows bigger on the inside by calving off large chunks, which always look like they’re lined with molten lava.
From this short video, it looks like the lava tubes aren’t hotter than the surrounding lava fields, which I guess makes sense if they’re empty or just filled with cooling lava. But it’s interesting that empty lava tubes presumably aren’t cooler than the surrounding field either. It’s fascinating!
I’m sure volcano experts already know all of this (and I could read up on it), but I’m enjoying the process of trying to deduce how they work from what I’m seeing. 😁

At 1:30 - I love the differences in surface texture between the two years. Also, at the beginning, am I seeing, at 0:22, iron deposits on the rim? Is that what is "hotter"? A solar effect? So fascinating!

I actually can't say, I do have a second video in the making from there, partially from the crater but I would like to get closer to it for better closeups , waiting for the right chance :)

The red colour in and on the crater means that there is iron included. But it has no influence on the temperature of the crater rim. At 0.37 the hottest area is shown. I watched the eruption and the growth of this crater almost every day. Eruptions changed and evolved from fountains to a re-filling "bathtub" with huge overflows. Finally at the point of the "hottest area" a crack in the crater rim appeared. The crater didn't fill anymore, because lava poured out at this crack to the outside and the inside at the same time! So we finally realized that the lava source was directly under the rim!
Also, I am surprised, that the opposite side of the rim is still so hot! I come to the conclusion that this is because most of the overflows happened at this side. The thickness of lava must be enormous there and there were several lava tunnels underground. Because cold lava is a very good insulator (bubbles!), there's still a lot of liquid lava/magma underground and the tunnels lead hot gas upwards to the surface and the rim.
Someone please may correct me, if my conclusion is wrong!
Btw great video, I'm very happy to see the thermal situation! Thx!😊

Gyfli - when we visited Iceland in June 2022, the southern-most lava field was smoking in many spots. Is that lava field still smoking? If so, amazing after more than 18 months after the eruption ceased 😮

Impressive both with this video and the normal non-thermal version. Thing is those lava flows will remain hot for years even though both eruptions have stopped as it takes a long time for most lavas to cool as while the surface layers have cooled quite a bit beneath the surface - if you went down like a meter or two - the rock would still be glowing semi-molten.

Great overlay at 1:05 that is perfectly aligned and showing the thermal image's context to the wider area :-) Wasn't the magma always reaching the surface under the back wall / north wall of the crater anyway? Rather than directly under the centre of the crater (0:43). Which is why it was flowing north out from under the back wall at one point as I recall.
