I would say go ahead with it for the competitive play but the actual games should stay normal or people would ruin the fun by over levelling and other dumb stuff
Hey! Glad you enjoyed the video! High level comp players will likely have the funds to buy dlc for mons since theyre spneding money on travel etc. But my vid was mainly tackling the barrier of entry for new Player's, like you mentioned. Sick that you pi ked up on that, even though i forgot to outright say it in the script.
power creep has been around as long as pokemon comp has been around I think he was referring to more extreme forms of power creep like with pokemon that are just straight up designed to be stupidly broken like urshifu ultra necrozma mega ray zacian and calyrex horses
I genuinely think a “Pokemon Company Authorized” gen system for mons would be fantastic. Any Pokemon and any stats, but they can’t be shiny and can’t have nicknames. Then put a little symbol by the name to show it’s an official genned mon. That way grinders can grind out their shiny authentically made teams and casuals can get into the game still.
@@MrSonicHedgehogif you care about naming them just catch them then. I only started in gen 8 and have Nat Dex in home lol pretty sure a player since gen 1 can do it too
@@jebalitabb8228 or just let people gen non-shinies. I get genning shinies is scummy but anything else should be free game if you beat the game or catch all of a regional dex or something.
Why is catching and training a prerequisite for tournament play when the tournament has no catching or training part? Is the tournament all about capturing and training pokémon? No. The tournament is about who constructs and pilots the best team(with some rng sprinkled in). I'd say if it's THAT important that the contestants assemble legitimately caught pokémon, that the tournament dedicates the first week of its time on the contestants catching and training the pokémon they're gonna compete with live. I suspect that would be boring and completely ruin the fun of the tournament... so how about we just do the sensible thing and bring back a more complex version of Pokémon Stadium? An even playing field and the curators have complete control over the code that they are so protective of.
I know DLC is more accessible, but the third games introduced QOL improvements and revisions to criticized aspects of the original games. But when games were $40 instead of $60+, it was easier to mentally justify.
@@jmurray1110 That is if you knew that they would make a "third version". As can be seen now, that wasn't lawyas the case, so you could easily miss an entire Gen because you waited for something that didn't happen.
@@jmurray1110that is an option. I think another perspective in the criticism of the upgraded 3rd version is, why not just delay the game and have the 'whole thing' released in one go? Main answer is obviously money which leads to another question: why make 2 versions of the same game at all? Artificially locking arbitrary content like story legendaries, gym leaders and region Pokemon can be limited by in-game selections rather than hard copies of the game. Various questionable marketing practices by the franchise just stack and makes things look worse.
This might be an unpopular opinion but I actually prefer the third version over DLC since there’s then a definite version of that generation to go back too…
Legendary horse fun fact Spectrier’s right eye doesn’t exist. It’s like it’s covered over like a healed scar, but you don’t notice because the hair is in the way. Glastrier’s left eye is covered by its ice mask while its right isn’t, but there’s no official artwork showing the right side of Glastrier’s body besides two Dreamworld renders
People saying making competitive Pokemon are easy have clearly never tried to get 0 IV attack and speed Enamorus in PLA to use on trick room teams or have to change EVs because you realised that you made a mistake or there’s a more optimal spread 😅 Making Genning legal would make competitive so much more accessible because it’s not like for the most part people are making completely illegal Pokemon, they’re just making the Pokémon that they need to make their team’s actually viable
@@neobahumuth6look up the deffinition of bad faith argument, cause using it where it doesn't fit makes you look stupid. Literally everything they said is factually correct. Look at how vivid the servers of Pokemon Showdown are. Free and allows you to change pokemon stats whenever you feel like in no time. Just skill and battles, no unnecessary luck/based grinding that takes hours that could be spent training
@@neobahumuth6 Bad faith argument? It’s a reality for people who want to use a Pokémon who’s IV’s are set when you first start the game so you have to reset the entire game if it has the wrong IV’s. Same goes for Pokémon like cresselia who want the same 0 IV spreads. Competitive is far from accessible and genning would make it far easier to make competitively viable teams. If there are people who keep saying it’s easy to make a competitive team then the argument like the one I made with Enamorus is a viable response. It gets even harder for those who’s job isn’t literally competitive or just general Pokemon, if you’re trying to play competitive while working a day to day job the time sink that is getting the right Pokémon with the right 0 IV’s for the right team archetype (mainly trick room) and then EV training it perfectly while also playtesting it either on the ranked ladder on SV or Showdown becomes even more of a challenge.
@@Sn0wmeadit's in bad faith because in reality it doesn't really matters as much as ppl want to make it look like to be and still doesn't changes the fact that the whole system is miles times easier than how it was in the past, so you are specifically targeting that contriviance to try and debunk it
The funny thing about "The Teambuilding Is So Easy Now" argument is that it completely ignores how there is no current way to lower IVs making it very difficult to obtain optimal special attackers (they want min attack to reduce damage from foul play and confusion) and trick room sweepers. This creates a special kind of hell for people who want a competitively viable enamorous-therian, beacause you would have to play legends arceus like 100 times to get an optimal enamorous
@@ghengiroo4143there was supposedly a leak that there is a way to make someone's IV's 0. Iv's being 0 also isnt super important outside of trick room. Maybe for confusion but outside of that no. Only other thing would be a slower weather settee maybe.
Foul play as well, but that 0 IV grind is tedious for the slightest of advantages, IVs in general are outdated along with multiple versions of the same game. Also for rpgs, there needs to be a grind/barrier for entry as it's not a fighting game.
Funny thing is that Urshifu brought in some massive power creep into the TCG as well, namely Rapid Strike Urshifu. It brought forth a rock-paper-scissors format and it also made single prize decks pretty much unviable since there was no Bench Barrier type ability in the format due to its attack G-Max Rapid Flow hitting for 120 to any two of your opponent bench Pokemon. In regards to the pay-to-win, the TCG at this point is the exact opposite since every single deck is super cheap for the most part. In regards to the genning, I completely agree that it would bring in more players.
There was a bench barrier in the form of manaphy, which protected your bench from damage. And TCG is way more pay to win, your average deck costs about $70 and if you even have to buy 3 decks a year that’s already $210 which is a yearly cost as opposed to vgc which is only a one time expense (for the most part)
@@PotatoHunts Manaphy didn't come around for a few sets after Urshifu's release in Brilliant Stars. Also, let's say you want to get into VGC on a serious level and only own a Switch. You need SwSh plus the DLC's, Legend's Arceus, and SVI plus the DLC. Assuming you don't own any of them that is around 200 bucks easy. Now you can build arguably the BDIF in Gardy for around 50-60 bucks and it will mostly be intact come rotation in 5 months. It really comes down to what you value more, money or time.
@@TheForeverRanger there is much more of a continuos cost to the TCG than vgc, you can’t fully get into the game in a couple months, you also need to get lucky with the deck you pick and hope it stays for a while. And if you’re just starting the vgc you don’t need the highest level Pokémon, if the price is too high buy games every couple months, if you’re just starting vgc you don’t need top tier Pokémon because your skill won’t be at a level where they’re useful
I mean Pokémon home technically isn’t even behind a pay wall you can transfer Pokémon between games without buying the subscription. It’s only if you want to access to the storage systems that you have to pay
The true power creep started back in G4 where the physical special split increased the overall damage output as mons get to use their moves from highest attacking side like Waterfall Gyarados, Outrage Salamence, Shadow Ball Gengar & countless other examples to name. G5 was littered w weather wars, overwhelming legendaries & mythicals, powerful dragons fighters & darks thus the reason for bringing Fairy type into the mix. Between G5 & 6, the power of few moves & items were reduced such as the gems, Tbolt, draco meteor, explosion, ice beam, but they clearly weren't enuf to maintain a consistent balance across the games.
He even called me one for using a built-in exploit, ie using The Entity to give myself enough Rare Candies to finish the PokeDex after using the Mew Glitch to get all base forms
@@MrSonicHedgehogI mean using an exploit is cheating, but cheating isn’t a bad thing. There’s nothing wrong with it if it doesn’t directly hurt anyone else lol
It is so much worse when you consider event exclusive Pokemons. You want a Victini with Fusion Bolt/Flare? Well you better have gotten it from that one online event 12 years. Not even talking about regional only events. Some Pokemon are no longer possible to get legally save for either having been lucky decades ago or buying a used copy that had the event all this time ago. Completely agree with your take of a legal genning tool.
They also essentially only nerfed Single Strike to make both unique moves do the same damage in the long run. Single Strike’s attack was doing more damage before. It was essentially 8 power stronger than Rapid Strike.
Will always advocate for a modern Pokemon Stadium / Revolution, that has every Pokemon, every gimmick, and you can create your teams as you see fit. The Pokemon company could run tournaments out of it, with rulesets made to suit. And then I just pray that it includes a Metronome Mode! The chaos!
Ha! Perhaps a little ambitious and over the top on my part. But the point would be for Pokemon to set/ban gimmicks and whatever Pokedex they want when running tournaments. Let people do their free-for-all gimmick matches in their own fun.
You can keep saying “Gamefreak should just make an official free Pokemon Showdown” but like what exactly does that benefit for Gamefreak? Why would they make something that guarantees them losing sales for their main games? I’m not saying what they’re doing now is good, but I don’t see how the suggestion being made to just create a free official gen program solves anything
big big big time agree on an official showdown like the only reason i don't battle is the team building. i watch what y'all do on YT here all the time and play showdown all the time and like thats so much fun. feeding a pokemon berries and ko'ing the same pokemon for EV's for an hour isn't fun lol
Feeding a Pokémon berries and training it is what you are meant to do, it makes any team you make satisfying and give you a connection to them. "Competitive" players don't even play the game properly, using external programs to add Pokémon to a game violates the rules of the games so it hard to see them as "players" with all the cheating and hacking. Anything that makes Wolfie cry in a corner makes me smile, cheaters shouldn't prosper.
@@madpsycho6 eh, different strokes for different folks. I suppose the benefit of requiring all that time investment for competitive play is, only children with a boat load of time and play Pokemon for 80% of their video game playing time are able to participate. Either that or make playing the game some bizarre job that people get paid to do to trade desired mon (which people do). And after playing 3+ generations of the game and counting, the whole 'connection' argument becomes worn and tossed out by everyone, like an old pair of shoes.
@@kristophesiem5336 they aren't trainers, they're hackers, there's a big difference between someone who actually trains Pokémon and someone who can't be arsed to look for a Pokémon and just hack them into the game.

If it's 70%, that's not too bad but if it's 50% at most, that's shows that they don't understand what it is to work for something. Example I can make is that I caught a level 9 Salamence using the SOS encounter function and it took hours and many attempts across many days but I got one and it felt so satisfying to caught, the "best" competitive players would get a similar Salamence that's shiny, hidden ability and/or perfect iv, a nigh impossible encounter.
This is an rpg, all rpg multiplayers have grind. Not saying it isn't annoying, without the grind it just kills most of the content. There should be an easier way to altar pokemon you catch, and ability patches should be purchasable

at 4:57 i would argue that pokemon yellow was while the same game also diffrent because the sprites werent jacked looking and was more based on the anime then red/blue/green. BW2 are sequals to the original and added story elements so not the same games. Platinum was a dlc addon but they didnt have the ability to do dlc patches so that probably why they made '3rd' versions. Final thoughts: We litteraly have rental pokemon being a thing in pokemon why isnt there a ingame competitive team builder for online play? I get they want to sell dlc but it shouldnt be access to pokemon themselves it should be for mini games/ story / and new game modes.
@@grydon6422you pretty much were Ash on Yellow, no contest. You could get all 3 Starters, you start with Pikachu and battle Jessie and James. How can you list these as small updates?
4:10 Honestly having a third game is probably the lesser of two evils imo. I don't think its great either, but... I'd rather know thay once I buy the game once, i never have to worry about having less than someone else for the entire games relevancy. Everyone can just play the game as intended, forever. At the end of the day though if DLCs were done a bit more tastefully, i think I'd be more on board with it. Just having all the catchable pokemon of the Generation in the base game, and making DLCs more about new areas and modes to make the casual side fun, as well as maybe a few select additions to items and please for the love of Arceus, more balanced Pokemon. In the last 2 Generations we've seen way too much powercreep, even for Pokemon. P.S They didn't "get away with it" in the other games (until ORAS anyway), they actually put more fucking content in those third games. Platinum had the entire Battle Frontier, as well as some more legendary events and interactions. B&W 2 are some of the best games when it comes to endgame, just barely outclassed by Heartgold and Soulsilver. So no, they didnt "get away with it". They used to make good games pretty consistently once upon a time.
*"Honestly having a third game is probably the lesser of two evils imo."* No, no it isn't. Not only you play basically the same game twice (and you also had to pay twice per game), but also it barely was different from its original counterparts. *"I'd rather know thay once I buy the game once, i never have to worry about having less than someone else for the entire games relevancy. Everyone can just play the game as intended, forever."* Man, this sounds way too self-centered. Also, anybody can play the DLC's content, they just have to buy it. *"Just having all the catchable pokemon of the Generation in the base game,"* Thing is that new Pokemon is what hypes most casual players when it comes to Pokemon DLC. Take those away and suddenly you lose a good amount of hype. *"In the last 2 Generations we've seen way too much powercreep, even for Pokemon."* Because, surpri9se surprise, that is exactly what hypes casual players the most!. Like it or not, casuals don't care about balance, they just want to have fun, so GF must do everything they can to sattisfy them. *"Platinum had the entire Battle Frontier, as well as some more legendary events and interactions."* Yet it was 90% the same game D/P were. And heck, not event the changes stand up to scrutiny: The BF was simply a grindfest. Your story team in no way could get you even one simple Symbol, much less the Golden ones, so you had to grind an entire new team to beat it. As Patz said, nobody likes grinding. Those "legendary events" are simply forgettable. Looker and Charon were badly executed. The former was just there, yet he didn't change the course of the story in any meaningful way, 99% of the plot beats from D/P still happen in Platinum as well, so he didn't make a difference. Charon basically stole the spotlight out of the other 3 Admins and they don't get any to replace the scenes they lost, ergo, their characters get weakened in return. Besides those three things, there's nothing else different between D&P and Platinum, so this game wasn't that good. *"B&W 2 are some of the best games when it comes to endgame,"* Those aren't "third versions", those are sequels. They are different. *"just barely outclassed by Heartgold and Soulsilver."* By this you meant the "post-game" were the only thing of note to do is "Go to city -> Beat Gym -> rinse and repeat" with no semblance of an story happening as well? Because that is just a chore and a boring one at that. Nothing of worth happens in Kanto. There's no story at all. It is boring...
They got away with selling 90% the same game 3 times, yes there were updates in the 3rd versions but the game was pretty much the same otherwise. So yes, they did get away with it for generations.
Games like persona is the only games ill except releaskng an updated version. There is a quite bug difference between persona 5 and 5 royal. Atleast 30+ hours and QOL changes were added.
It’s become play to win, even for casual players. Like, since the Switch was released, Pokemon Let’s Go required you to buy the Pokeball Plus or play the Mew Special Event in Pokemon Go to finish the dex - ie, get Mew - and we all know that PoGo is totally pay to play most of the time or be lucky enough to live in a city with lots of spawns and sights.
Firstly, you can get mew free from bdsp if you have a save file for lets go. Secondly, PoGo isn't controlled by gamefreak or Nintendo. It's under control of Niantic.
You can complete mew research as a f2p player. Yah your town/city gonna need to have pokestops and spwan but you dont need like densely hotspot area like nyc
@stoicauritra7147 You can’t transfer that Mew to Lets Go games, that is what’s absurd about it. They made sure buying the pokeball+ was the only way for you to get mew in that game
First, I agree the sequel games format should have been what they did from the start because it just feels better on a purchasing stand point of more new content, but the third version releases did serve a sort of purpose back in the days they were done and maybe they switched to doing sequel and alt universe releases because they also felt it was better? Anyway, to their credit, with Yellow they were showing off or testing in a way the friendship tracker with your starter Pikachu before revealing that was going to be with all Pokemon in Gold/Silver and onward with the pay off being some evolutions and changing a moves power like Return/Frustration or even setting off special events like people giving you things. With Emerald they changed the Contest Halls to Battle Tents and had all contests in that one hall in Lilvycove and had the whole Battle Frontier and Battle Tower that everyone generally likes and always wants back and it's been sort of redone in some generations because it went over well I guess. Then in Platinum aside from fleshing out the dex with mons that should have been in there in Diamond/Pearl and adding Giratina's whole thing to deepen the story with Galactic they were testing out more Pokemon being able to walk around Amity Park in prep for the entire dex being able to walk in HG/SS. I can't really recall what was so different about Crystal except maybe them testing if people actually wanted to have a female protagonist and maybe testing something with Suicune events but I didn't really have a solid Crystal in my childhood, my brother did, so I didn't spend too much time playing it to find hidden bits. Gotta say again that sequels to R/S and D/P could have been sooooo good to build more into the stories of those regions like they did for B/W, and even X/Y would be a good base for a sequel or an alt universe like US/UM kind of is with just slight changes but US/UM kind of dominated that way of a story being told using Rainbow Rocket and the ultra space with the worm holes.
Okay, hear me out. What about a Pokemon Gen Software that allows you to make a team code, so you would be able to use it on ladders and wouldn't affect your pokedex. They could even have a Tournament specific version that has you register your team in the builder and gives you a single use team code. (You would also be able to just bring your own team for people with shinies or marked pokemon)
Calyrex-Shadow is the most absurd form of power creep I have ever seen and I got to use it in a draft league so I know just how overtuned it feels to use, so the fact that you have to go through this much paying to get one is absolutely cruel. This is why I just play Singles on showdown, being able to actually use everything that exists in the game is so nice.
I dont play anything competitively, let me say that. However, im that weirdo that likes grinding. Examples. In minecraft, i LOVE fishing. You upgrade your rod as you fish, and get great gear, food, potions, anything you need. Mining. I will play some music and lose hours if im not careful, just strip mining. To put things into pokemon, im currently filling in my dex and raising pokemon to lvl 100. Join a terra battle, try to beat it, use the xp candies to level up and work my way down the dex. Take the pokemon i got in the raid and wonder trade it. Ive gotten a good amount of pokemon to fill in the other two dexes. The ad pokemon are anoying, but im getting them for free basicly, so eh. Grinding is a mindset. I love working and progressing, cause when youre done, it feels so sweet and satisfying. Im excited to complete my first dex is scarlet, it will be the first dex i ever conplete.
Lets be real... "Needing to buy the game to win" in a game where you have to buy the game to play at all... isn't pay2win. If we were going back to the older model you would be paying twice that price for the new game. You need the most modern version of the game to play competitive because that is the version being played. Yeah somethings are behind DLC, but you are seemingly forgetting that +DLC is a version of the game that you can buy outright. SwSh+EP is a version, SV+ToAZ is a version... It is just that those of us who bought the base version don't have to rebuy a new copy of the game and those who didn't buy the base version can get the entire thing at once... and both have to payless for that. Gen6 (120 USD) 1. XY 2. ORAS Gen7 (120 USD) 1. SM 2. USUM Gen8 (90 USD) 1. SwSh 2. SwSh+EP Gen9 (90 USD) 1. SV 2. SV+ToAZ Nothing has changed... you have to buy the latest version of the series to play competitive, and you need past version of the game to fully have access to everything competitive. Hell they made you need older versions even less from Gen8 since they cut so many Pokemon moves and made it so that it can't be brought up from a past version. So now you don't even need a past version at all given that they give you all the legendaries in the most recent version of Gen8 and are likely to do the same in Gen9.... so if that turns out to be the case they would have eliminated the requirement to even have a past version of the game yourself to have full access to everything competitive. With the sole exception being IVs being set to 0. You don't need to breed, you don't need to train, you quite literally need to just play the game... and if you don't want to play the game don't... if you don't like the very base point of pokemon... aka toss ball and capture pokemon... why are you even here? Game has been watered down enough as is in an attempt to stop competitive players from genning pokemon (and give new players easier access to competitive)... and nothing that is done is really going to stop that.... because they will always be required to go to some NPC to change stats so genning is just easier.... Like even if they put genning into the game... which would kill pretty much every aspect but the story and competitive... competitive players would still gen outside of the game because it would be faster and they could gen larger batches... there is no winning here. Only making the game worse and worse.
You don't even need a past version? Some pokemon still have exclusive tutor moves that are locked in older games. Other pokemon are outright impossible to get in new games. As the video was explaining (but you probably didn't hear cause your parents are cousins) this makes it much much harder for newer players who may want to enter the competitive scene? Want this legendary? Well you better buy this old game sold at who knows what price on ebay or amazon and this other game where you only want a very specific move tutor in it. Oh, and some of these move tutors are conveniently behind a 30 dollar paywall additional to the 60 bucks the game cost, so now you are paying 160 bucks minimim for one pokemon. ONE. And that's of course not counting the amount of time you'll need to soft reset for a good IV/Nature, or for the opposite, a 0IV attack or speed mon for foul play and trick room. Pokemon tourneys are pay to win, cause it's won by people who have paid ludicrous amounts of money for the best pokemon. Like, maybe the top 24. From here on down you can see the people who didn't have pokemon locked behind countless paywalls, and only beyond top 24 does skill start to matter. That, granted, you didn't offend a non-binary judge and got expelled from the tournament for no reason and all that money you spent goes to waste, cause that's a thing now
@@kristophesiem5336 Is see you didn't even read my post... nor know anything about the current games. Guess you are to busy insulting me because you don't have a point to stand on and your feelings were hurt. Tutor moves? That doesn't happen anymore. A pokemon can only have the moves it can learn in that game. If it doesn't guess what... It is the deleted from the pokemon! You literally cannot bring tutor moves from older games! Bring Pokemon from older games? I believe I said specifically if a person was willing to trade... you know part of the pokemon experience. They could get those Pokemon, but lets go with saying you don't want to trade. Well guess what VGC has this nifty thing called a list of available Pokemon you are allowed to use. It isn't the whole roster. It is quite literally just the Pokemon on the Pokedex. You can catch them all with the soul exception of version exclusives... which guess what gamefreak gave you extras of so that you could trade with the other version to get the other exclusives! "But what about my legendaries!" You mean the thing they let you capture all of in the past games... and are likely going to let you catch all of when the indigo disc comes out? You know Dynamax Adventures, Ultra Wormholes, Hoopa shenanigans, etc... No? You conveniently forgot about those because they don't suit your point? Also get over this 30 dollar paywall crap. It isn't a 30 dollar paywall. It is a 30 dollar discount. Because in the past if you want to play competitive for all of a single generation you needed to buy two titles. Period X or Y and OR or AS, S or M and US or UM. Instead of needing to buy two games. You need to buy one game and a DLC that cost half the price of a second game. You even further prove you didn't read what I wrote and jumped to assanine conclusion because I specifically stated the only thing missing from the game was a way to set IV to 0, and if that were introduced there would be literally nothing left for them to do to make getting into competitive easier. The sad fucking part is that you have such shaking standing ground you have to bring up min/maxing in a topic supposedly about new players coming into competitive who would specifically not be at min/maxing to that degree of worrying about having 0 ATK IV incase they come up against someone using Foul Play or worrying about having 0 Spe IVs when deciding "Hey I want to try a trick room team" because clearing they are also thinking "Man I need 0 Spe IV incase I come up against another trick room player " instead of "What slow Pokemon is good". Pokemon Tourneies are won by the people who put in the most time, effort, and thought into their strategies that they use at that level. They genned those Pokemon as have been pointed out in many scandles. So... what money is being spent outside of having access to the game? None you imbecile. They didn't even need to buy the DLC because it was genned. The only money spent in Pokemon Tournies is for the expenses of the trip there. Not on "pay2win" pokemon. Even Patterz and the video didn't try to make that dumb argument and their argument was based on the DLC of SwSh. Which for the information have now is different to SV. Needing only the base game if you are willing to trade, and the DLC only making that trading requirement (which is part of pokemon) easier. Especially since because of the switch... it is very easy to get multiple of "stand alone" pokemon with a single copy of the game. But no go off on how hard it is to get into competitive, and how you need 200 dollars of older games to get move tutor moves that you can no longer use because gamefreak decided "nah lets not do that". Might want to update your knowledge before you come up someone insulting chief.
as a person who is a very casual fan of pokemon collect a few of the cards watch some poketubers and dont really have the time to play the games i did not know that ice and shadow rider callarex were 2 separate pokemon thought they were just one legendary. anyone else?
That's like complaining you have to buy the game to play it the Pokemon dlc are expansions and technically you could get the mons without buying the expansion. It's a ridiculous idea that the expansions are pay to win. Sure go is obviously pay to win and let's go with the mew pokeball kinda.
Don’t most of the competitive players use generated Pokémon? I thought that’s been known. And I’m all for it, grinding up teams is such a waste of time that’s just there for that reason.
Many don’t, because these tournaments often have the means to check if your Pokémon was generated or obtained naturally in game, and they won’t allow you to use generated pokemon.
I do agree with everything said, my only thought though is that I can't really consider it pay to win in a traditional sense. The reason being is that competitive pokemon is something the community sets up. In recent years pokemon has given more care to it, but it's never been it's priority. Just like Smash Bros, yeah the characters have some balance but it isn't meant to be a competitive fighting game. It's a parry game for children at heart. And at its core, pokemon is a game for children. So I can't consider it pay to win for something it was never intended to be. The pokemon aren't behind a pay wall. There's a DLC with more story for the children's game. They added more pokemon to it. Pay to win would be them making a pokemon game designed for battling and then making players pay for pokemon packs or something like that. That being said it is a gate for new players BUT that's what every competitive player had to go through. Thus coming from someone who is new and wants to be in the mix of league, it's just not viable to serve both purposes.
Ngl your right, if they wanted Pokémon to be focused on competive they would have made you pay for some packs like the Trading Card Game. And we have to remember Pokémon focus for ages was children.
It not being pay to win in the ”traditional sense” does not mean it’s not pay to win in reality. You need to buy multiple games with extra DLCs to get access to the best competitive Pokemon. And competitive Pokemon being set up by the community is the biggest load of bs to try to justify your argument lmao. We are not talking about smogon competitive here. Pokemon has been setting up official tournaments since Gen 5 at least, and they are huge events too. There is nothing community driven in that. Every generation the changes to abilities moves etc. are many times tied to their performance in the official tournaments. Like it or not, Pokemon is officially a competitive game on top of having the casual side to it which ”iS fOr KiDs”.
@@grydon6422 It being competitive doesn't change its target audience in the slightest. Not one time has Nintendo marketed Pokémon to ANYONE but children. You saying that it is competitive now and it isn't "Just for kids" anymore is correct in the sense that Nintendo does somewhat care for both. But that's like saying Cartoons are are just for kids because they put in jokes that only adults would get. It's still Marketed, designed, and plays likes it's for children. It has a competitive side/aspect of the game that Nintendo somewhat caters to, but the DLC has never been made with competitive in mind. The game itself really hasn't been made with competitive in mind. That's why so many people in the community are so agitated at how easy it is to do everything. It's only gotten easier and easier as time has gon on. To the point where nuzlockes are almost the most common way to play the game. Because it makes it and I quote from many a UA-camr "A stupid baby game". Pokemon whether YOU like it or not, isn't a Competitive game with a casual side. It is and has always been a casual game with a competitive side. And until Nintendo starts Catering , Marketing, and designing the game to fit the competitive, it will not be pay to win.
The way Game Freak got around the showdown thing is rental teams. If you want to play but not make your pokemon you can just use a team from online. Of course, i also think genning is fine, but thats their answer to showdown.
I prefer the 3rd game over dlc, because im not the type of person who gets a new game on release, so I would just save money and buy the third game instead of game + dlc
is so easy now ? have they ever try to make a new mon from scratch competitive viable ? the older shit is faster yes...but the fucking terra hat is not. is take like 5 days of just spamming raid for one pkm and that if you are lucky with the drop.
If Pokémon make a showdown esc program they should make it so you can't get shinys from it. As they would be the main complaints, and anyone wanting to grind for competitive can grind out shiny comp mons
yeah using a DLC pokemon on tournament is called pay to win. if the Dlc is free, there no pay to win. you will lose if not paid for Dlc pokemon. the other pokemon with Pay to win is, Pokemon Master.. there a rank system on raid.. or you need get some badge by clearing very super hard team using the only gacha character. also the beating champion league you need a good pokemon, and for 6* also very hard to get, you need beat elite 4 or champion league
I think genned pokemon should be legal. I see the vgc as can you build a team that works and can you out predict your opponent. Just because you have a genned team doesn’t make you a good battler. And when I say genned I mean the pokemon are ones you could obtain legally not ones with random abilities and stats
🤦🏻♀️ People complaining about the third gane in early gens forget the biggest reason to make them besides mak8ng more money - that was the ONLY way to get accessible patches back then. This was the norm throughout the video game industry. You couldn't just hook up an arcade cabinet or a console to dialup internet and download a patch to alter the program on an arcade board/game cartidge/CD. The technology did not exist yet. Look at Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, where they did make an emergency patch to fix a bug - but to be patched you either had to go to specific RL locations or mail affected cartridges in to have the patch applied; or wait for Emerald, which fixed bugs and added new content, the industry standard fot games back then. Gens 1-4 just couldn't be easily patched. By Gen 7, tbe next time a non-sequel game was released, the tech was there for easy patching, so not truly giving reasons to spend money for bug fixes by also adding enough new content to justify a new game understandably led to backlash.

its an terrible argument saying pokemon is pay to win compare it to for example an sport as cycling you need to buy the bike the gear etc if you spent more you can get an actual better bike so the ones who spent most get the biggets advantage. with pokemon the advantages are limited and they cost the same for everyone you cnat pay more to get an bigger advantage so honestly calling pokemon pay to win is bullcrap for almost all sport or competetitions you need to make investments
90 dollars for ONE pokemon??? How is that okay??? Comparing a videogame to a sport has almost nothing to do and the paywall is not comparable between these two, they are almost different worlds
@@juliii1801 its a 1 time thing in every single competetive hobby you have to put money in even something as running because you need running shoes for that. and that paywall as yu call it is only an issue if you wanna play comptetive and hthat cost money just as every single sport and even most games. there are verry few hobbies that dont require any investment at all. and clearly you never heard of E-sports which is what pokemon foils down to

If you're apart of the 1% of the pokemon consumer base (which is still pretty big), then sure i can see why. If you're apart of the 99% that doesn't and doesn't care to play it, then no because you genuinely do not care enough about it
Team building not easy. The reg D meta literally was changing week to week. The only way you could keep up eith the meta was to hack bc.. all the top players hack.
I mean... If you don't want to gen pokemon, but you hate ev training. Just find one of the dozens of twitch streams wehre they gen raids to give ability patches, and then sell them for 125k each lol.
Tbh, I disagree. Ofcourse you stated you need access to "all" pokemon. However, no matter what team you make, even meta teams, have their weaknesses. There is always a pokemon you have access too that either is counter to the p2w pokemon, or is a pokemon that fills the same niche. Ofcourse this will change if ALL the meta pokemon are dlc. But that would almost never be the case. Like i said, every team has it's weakness, even meta teams. You could easliy reach high master rank etc with a semi meta team, or even just a team of pokemon you like. Also, opponents won't be prepared for some unusual pokemon picks. So you can also get a win that way. Competitive is way more than basestats and OP pokemon
yea sure in lower ranks or casual formats you can use less used non dlc pokemon, but you cant lie tournament results shows that these dlc pokemon are used in the higher tier in competitve play. If ur truly willing to play pokemon competitve at a high level you will need to pay these barriers to get the pokemon like the calyrex horses and ogerpon.
2021: Regieleki wins worlds. 2022: Calyrex Shadow Rider wins worlds. 2023: Urshifu water wins worlds. LAIC that happened last week: Urshifu water wins. Its not an opinion. Its a fact. Results speak by themselves, you have way higher odds of winning if you use a dlc pokemon

5:30 please stop being a hypocrite. while B2W2 had taken it to the extreme, third versions made those edits too. crystal changed the story to chasing suicune; emerald added an new gym leader in juan even if he wasn't that different from wallace though made significant changes to wallace when making him champion, AND altered story beats; platinum added the distortion world (that got turned into a hallway after the story), changed up gym order and mons.

Pokémon should be a game about skill, not about how much time you can take from your life without becoming homeless. Players shouldn’t have to spend days if not weeks just to make a tournament competitive team, that time should be spent on them practicing with their teams so that they can perfect their strategies.

Pat, my dude, my guy, the genies were introduced in gen 5. Power creep mons been around for a while in this series.
power creep has been around as long as pokemon comp has been around I think he was referring to more extreme forms of power creep like with pokemon that are just straight up designed to be stupidly broken like urshifu ultra necrozma mega ray zacian and calyrex horses
I mean not being able to name your genned mons when they're ones you've ran since gen 1 seems a bit on the scummy side imho
Or better yet just add a battle simulator which lets you get into competitive play without needing to touch the base game in any capacity.

I know DLC is more accessible, but the third games introduced QOL improvements and revisions to criticized aspects of the original games. But when games were $40 instead of $60+, it was easier to mentally justify.
Not only that, Ultra did add new Pokemon so its definitely not entirely the same game. The closest to that was Platinum adding forms
Plus you could just buy the enhanced version and not bother with the actively inferior one
Yep and depending where you lived it was 30-35 for one game and its now 90 with the dlc

People saying making competitive Pokemon are easy have clearly never tried to get 0 IV attack and speed Enamorus in PLA to use on trick room teams or have to change EVs because you realised that you made a mistake or there’s a more optimal spread 😅 Making Genning legal would make competitive so much more accessible because it’s not like for the most part people are making completely illegal Pokemon, they’re just making the Pokémon that they need to make their team’s actually viable
is it really that necessary to use bad faith argument for pushing for genning to be considered legal?

Cheren and the other trainer grew up in B2W2... It's clearly a sequel.
There's fresh start mochi, pomeg, kelpsy, quality, hondew, great and tomato berries as well as the mints that may lower stats.

P.S
They didn't "get away with it" in the other games (until ORAS anyway), they actually put more fucking content in those third games.
*"Honestly having a third game is probably the lesser of two evils imo."*
No, no it isn't. Not only you play basically the same game twice (and you also had to pay twice per game), but also it barely was different from its original counterparts.
*"I'd rather know thay once I buy the game once, i never have to worry about having less than someone else for the entire games relevancy. Everyone can just play the game as intended, forever."*
Man, this sounds way too self-centered.
Also, anybody can play the DLC's content, they just have to buy it.
*"Just having all the catchable pokemon of the Generation in the base game,"*
Thing is that new Pokemon is what hypes most casual players when it comes to Pokemon DLC. Take those away and suddenly you lose a good amount of hype.
*"In the last 2 Generations we've seen way too much powercreep, even for Pokemon."*
Because, surpri9se surprise, that is exactly what hypes casual players the most!. Like it or not, casuals don't care about balance, they just want to have fun, so GF must do everything they can to sattisfy them.
*"Platinum had the entire Battle Frontier, as well as some more legendary events and interactions."*
Yet it was 90% the same game D/P were. And heck, not event the changes stand up to scrutiny:
The BF was simply a grindfest.
*"B&W 2 are some of the best games when it comes to endgame,"*
Those aren't "third versions", those are sequels. They are different.
*"just barely outclassed by Heartgold and Soulsilver."*
By this you meant the "post-game" were the only thing of note to do is "Go to city -> Beat Gym -> rinse and repeat" with no semblance of an story happening as well? Because that is just a chore and a boring one at that. Nothing of worth happens in Kanto. There's no story at all. It is boring...
They got away with selling 90% the same game 3 times, yes there were updates in the 3rd versions but the game was pretty much the same otherwise. So yes, they did get away with it for generations.
Games like persona is the only games ill except releaskng an updated version. There is a quite bug difference between persona 5 and 5 royal. Atleast 30+ hours and QOL changes were added.
Black and White 2 is 2 years after the first black and white games, and Ultra Sun and Moon are alternate realities
But you don’t need Mew to get the Shiny Charm.
@stoicauritra7147
You can’t transfer that Mew to Lets Go games, that is what’s absurd about it.
As someone who doesn't play competitive...
No, that's it I just don't play
Gen6 (120 USD)
1. XY
2. ORAS
Gen7 (120 USD)
1. SM
2. USUM
Gen8 (90 USD)
1. SwSh
2. SwSh+EP
Gen9 (90 USD)
1. SV
2. SV+ToAZ
Nothing has changed... you have to buy the latest version of the series to play competitive, and you need past version of the game to fully have access to everything competitive.
20:31 I remember Zamazenta by shiny colors. :D
as a person who is a very casual fan of pokemon collect a few of the cards watch some poketubers and dont really have the time to play the games i did not know that ice and shadow rider callarex were 2 separate pokemon thought they were just one legendary. anyone else?
That's like complaining you have to buy the game to play it the Pokemon dlc are expansions and technically you could get the mons without buying the expansion. It's a ridiculous idea that the expansions are pay to win. Sure go is obviously pay to win and let's go with the mew pokeball kinda.
26:25 tera grass heatran isn't invincible anymore
of course it's pay to win daniel you have to pay for the games to even win them 🙄🙄
Overwatch 2 locked nets picks behind the highest tiers of the free battle pass but unlocked immediately with the payed one
Glastrier doesnt have eyes, he has ice 😅I had to
Don’t most of the competitive players use generated Pokémon?
Love your content 😊😊😊
Was there a bundle pass for the two dlc parts in the eShop? The physical card stores sell is $39.99 for one or the other
The way Game Freak got around the showdown thing is rental teams. If you want to play but not make your pokemon you can just use a team from online. Of course, i also think genning is fine, but thats their answer to showdown.
4:00 they got away with it because unlike remasters and the DLC they actually provided changes to the game.
Unseen fist hits through sub too
I prefer the 3rd game over dlc, because im not the type of person who gets a new game on release, so I would just save money and buy the third game instead of game + dlc
is so easy now ? have they ever try to make a new mon from scratch competitive viable ?
the older shit is faster yes...but the fucking terra hat is not. is take like 5 days of just spamming raid for one pkm and that if you are lucky with the drop.
Pokemon is pay to win? Yes, because you have to pay $60 to win the game
I just want to make a quick comment, OverWatch 2. Unlock new characters through just gameplay. You have to buy them.
Dlc pay walls wouldn’t even be bad if the dlc was massive
If Pokémon make a showdown esc program they should make it so you can't get shinys from it. As they would be the main complaints, and anyone wanting to grind for competitive can grind out shiny comp mons
People will cheat to get the perfect mons in high competitive play anyway
Hey patt, can react more to crime documentaries? I love to watch those and do my homework, love all of your videos tho
I prefer 3rd versions over dlc any day because you actualy OWN it while you lose the dlc as soon as they kill the servers and your sd card dies
18:20 Nah, gen 5 was the start of horrendous power creep, with all those min-maxed monstrosities ruining OU, together with weather setters.
yeah using a DLC pokemon on tournament is called pay to win. if the Dlc is free, there no pay to win. you will lose if not paid for Dlc pokemon.
the other pokemon with Pay to win is, Pokemon Master.. there a rank system on raid.. or you need get some badge by clearing very super hard team using the only gacha character. also the beating champion league you need a good pokemon, and for 6* also very hard to get, you need beat elite 4 or champion league
They just want to make more money.
Although, I would prefer team building to be shorter
Yes, next question.
I don’t play competitive cause I’m not a fan of grinding
Its funny that gamefreak just needs a rusty bottle cap and it solves most of the problem they just dont care
personally i think you should have to catch the pokemon but then go to a PC in the game and change it willy nilly
I got Pokémon GO ad on this video

there have never been any micropayments there... except in unite
Nobody cares about 0Spe Enamorus. It’s not good.
Kinda off topic but like why the heck would anyone need to buy a specific brand of razor instead of just a cheap one on your local store?
eh quality ig, i mean its pretty subjective if you want to get a cheap or name brand razor. completely your choice
If you have special needs, fradgile skin etc. My ex had psoriasis and needed very spesific brand products for shaving. :)
its an terrible argument saying pokemon is pay to win compare it to for example an sport as cycling you need to buy the bike the gear etc if you spent more you can get an actual better bike so the ones who spent most get the biggets advantage. with pokemon the advantages are limited and they cost the same for everyone you cnat pay more to get an bigger advantage so honestly calling pokemon pay to win is bullcrap for almost all sport or competetitions you need to make investments
90 dollars for ONE pokemon??? How is that okay??? Comparing a videogame to a sport has almost nothing to do and the paywall is not comparable between these two, they are almost different worlds
@@juliii1801 its a 1 time thing in every single competetive hobby you have to put money in even something as running because you need running shoes for that. and that paywall as yu call it is only an issue if you wanna play comptetive and hthat cost money just as every single sport and even most games. there are verry few hobbies that dont require any investment at all.
and clearly you never heard of E-sports which is what pokemon foils down to
@@wowgek7Pokemon is barely comparable to an esport and the worst thing is that you're defending that only one pokemon can cost you 90 dollars
@@juliii1801 lol sure barely comparible to an e sport while it has en whole competetion world championships etc honestly I cnat even take that serieus but sure why isnt it an e-sport according to you because it ticks of every box on the definition of e sports.
and also I am not defending it at all I am saying it isnt pay to win
pay to win means you get a advantage over people who pay less here the price is the same for everyone. heck even games like cod etc are more pay to win even if everyone had the same acces to everything in the game due to the simple fact that the person with the best pc has an advtantage.
with pokemon everyone has the same money investment everyone has the exact same hardware. internet speed isnt realy an factor either.
so pokemon is pretty much the least pay to win competetive game EVER. because everyone can have an equal playing field for the exact same price
@@wowgek7 you're really stretching it to compare an Urshifu to a PC
If you're apart of the 1% of the pokemon consumer base (which is still pretty big), then sure i can see why. If you're apart of the 99% that doesn't and doesn't care to play it, then no because you genuinely do not care enough about it
I'm debating about making a gacha game myself. Cause well I want money
For the water absorb on ogre tera water mask you could run water-weak tera type(lots of people running fire or ground)
Team building not easy. The reg D meta literally was changing week to week. The only way you could keep up eith the meta was to hack bc.. all the top players hack.
Nah bro emerald platinum and ultra sun and moon were goated cuz the original story sucked except for ruby and sapphire
@@KitsuLovesU sure, however also those pokemon have hard counters and now with tera types you can completely surprise your opponent, the amount variables while teambuilding is endless. I'm not saying the dlc pokemon aren't better, however there are ways around them. Usually even multiple. The only pokemon that was truly overpowered (when i played a lot of comp) was zacian crowned. (I didnt play comp oras/usum so i dont have a mega Ray opinion). And even zacian became kinda useless after a paralyze. If you don't have access to those dlc mons just make sure you have the perfect counter to it. Unless it's the crowned tundra lol. They introduced like 10+ ubers in that dlc xd
@@mrmittenns5728 1. I dont think ur talking about VGC because tournaments are playing in open teamsheats so ur idea on using tera type to suprise a oppoenet is irrational, zacian isnt a problem since its not dlc so why bring it up.
2. There are so many dlc mons that are meta right now heatran, ogerpon, urshifu-rapid/single, cressila, and ursaluna bloodmoon just to name a few. That cannot be obtained with base Scarlet and Violet. If you were to try and build a team right that can counter cressila or urshifu leads your already comminting half your available team to bring in. You need to also build a offensive core for yourself, not even gonna mention that there are other huge threats like fluttermane and iron hands you need to also figure out how your going to deal with.
3. seems to me you dont even play vgc format so idk why your even trying to prove a point
Ultra games were different enough and way better than base sun and moon and I’ll die on this hill😠😠😠
Pokémon IS pay to win. I MEAN THE GAMES COST $60
Nowadays, yes.
No, because even if you're playing competitively, you could still get screwed over by luck.
That has nothing to do with P2W
P2W means that you can get an advantage, not that the advantage dictates who wins.
@@rompevuevitos222 Pokémon vgc suffers from a hacking problem, not a p2w problem, hacking offers a greater advantage and people getting DQed for it was fair.
isnt pay to win games where you have to buy things to even have a chance at winning a game? pokemon games arent really on that level yet.( i would say pokemon go is a pay to win) dont get me wrong they are planning on taking as much money as possible from us but i dont think it checks the important boxes for that label
No matter how you trying to twist it, hacking is not okay the greatest of the greatest players in other franchises aren’t complaining how hard / boring grinding is
Winning a championship with a hacked team for thousands of dollars is literally being a fraud
Pokémon should be a game about skill, not about how much time you can take from your life without becoming homeless. Players shouldn’t have to spend days if not weeks just to make a tournament competitive team, that time should be spent on them practicing with their teams so that they can perfect their strategies.
Yeah
